Why did the chicken cross the road?

Because he was a hellraiser with no regard for authority.

You Americans really should do something with your legal system.

The chicken's fine was given to the owners because they were responsible for allowing the chicken to cross the highway (through carelessness)

It was not a stupid case, but the owners got off because of its class

However i do know a case, when a man drove a brand new recreation van on the highway and used cruise control and then let go of the steering wheel so he could make a coffee in the back

The vehicle crashed and he sued, and won because they didn't tell him the manual that the vehicle would not drive itself

Someone made a typo (typing error), because the US currency is the dollar, not the pound. I think this case is a bit ridiculous, but a good warning to lawmakers that things are getting bad.

The news report is from a British site, and I assume they aproximately translated the amount to Pounds.

It's the same here in Canada, every few weeks someone gets mauled or killed by a vicous dog, pitbulls are even banned in some cities. The animals responsiable are usually destroyed and the owners are fined.
