View Full Version : Galley question, GOTM 43 1.29f
PhoenixRose Jun 05, 2005, 02:17 AM I'm on my first GOTM and have (unsuccessfully!) hunted the forum for reference to the problem I seem to have ....
... since installing the GOTM mods (from the full installer downloaded today) I notice a difference in the galley movement, apparently from 3 to 6 tiles (galley on my screen at the moment is 1.1.6/6). However, the actual movement allowed is only 2 tiles per turn.... ??
I've not installed any other mods besides the upgrade to 1.29f and the GOTM stuff, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what's happening.
Any help appreciated !!
Thanks,
PhoenixRose :)
Megalou Jun 05, 2005, 02:32 AM The three different water tiles - coast, sea and ocean - have different "movement cost." If you travel on the ocean you will be able to move all those 6 tiles. If you travel on sea tiles, you will only move half as far, and on coastal tiles only one third as far!
Tip: if you sail through one of your towns, this counts as going through an ocean tile, so sometimes you can save some moves.
Good luck!
civ_steve Jun 05, 2005, 03:37 AM Hi PhoenixRose! Welcome to CFC and Gotm!
This is called 'Differential Naval Movement'. This is not the norm for GOTM or COTM, but it was activated for this month's game. All ships have their movement rate doubled (Galleys movement of 3 is doubled to 6.) And each type of water tile has the costs that Megalou pointed out.
A link to a thread that contains a full discussion of Differential Naval Movement is contained in the GOTM Reference Thread.
PhoenixRose Jun 05, 2005, 06:10 AM Thanks Megalou & Civ-Steve ...
... and "d'oh!" to me, because I'd meant to go back & check out the Differential Naval Movement when I read the GOTM stuff earlier.
BTW - having only recently promoted myself to Regent level, playing Deity is delightfully daunting !

AlanH Jun 05, 2005, 06:21 AM Hi, welcome to CivFanatics and GOTM :wavey:
You already have the answers to your question, but I'll just emphasise that this is not a result of the GOTM mods you have installed - they only add graphics and sounds for new units and civs, and having installed them once you don't need to change anything to play each month's game.
The unit movement and other game parameters are set by the start file or the scenario file that you run. In this case it's the GOTM 43 start file that has differential naval movement enabled, as well as a number of other changes to game rules. Last month's GOTM 42 didn't use differential naval movement. You need to read the feature list on the GOTM web site for each game in order to know what rule changes, if any, have been made each month.
Enjoy your game :)
PhoenixRose Jun 05, 2005, 07:58 AM Thanks for the welcome & the info/clarification, AlanH ... yes, I'd read the features before I started the game, but was keen to start playing & tucked away a mental note to check the only bit of the features list that I didn't understand - the naval movement bit! It probably should have clicked with me that it was relevant to my galley 'problem' ...
... I blame the coffee - I'm sure this morning's cuppa just wasn't as good as usual & then there goes my whole day ;-)
Back to my 3rd restart of GOTM 43 ... great way to get a handle on Deity level, this getting wiped out early stuff ;-)
Cheers,
PhoenixRose :-)
AlanH Jun 05, 2005, 08:28 AM Having restarted, you won't be able to submit, of course, but please take advantage of the GOTM 43 spoiler info that is posted by other players to see how your attempts compare with the top gamers here. There are also Hunting Tips threads for this game where less experienced players can ask for advice.
