View Full Version : COTM 12 Results & Congratulations
ainwood Jun 10, 2005, 06:51 PM Again, the race was tight, and again there was a little more variety in the top results, with a cultural victory sneaking in to the medals.
It was Dynamic who topped the competition with a fast domination victory, in 230 AD. Hendrickszoon claimed silver with a cultural 100k victory, in an amazing 1180 AD. Again, third place went to an amazingly fast victory, with DaveMcW triggering conquest in only 70 AD!

AlanH Jun 10, 2005, 08:25 PM Well done everyone! Truly awesome date, DaveMcW :goodjob:
Jason Fliegel Jun 10, 2005, 10:49 PM That's the first time I can remember seeing Middle Ages techs (techs -- plural!) in the QSC results. Wow!
Dynamic Jun 10, 2005, 11:22 PM Congrats to all winners an especially for players who break the records!
DaveMcW 70AD Conquest
A'AbarachAmadan 840AD Diplo
bradleyfeanor 1070AD Space
hendrikszoon 1180AD 100K Culture
Dynamic Jun 10, 2005, 11:24 PM And in this game I reached one of my dream - 490 points in GPR.
MeteorPunch Jun 10, 2005, 11:31 PM And in this game I reached one of my dream - 490 points in GPR.That's amazing Dynamic. I assume that is the highest ever.
civ_steve Jun 11, 2005, 02:40 AM MeteorPunch - you are correct! Dynamic's score translates to a 98% result on average over the last 9 xOTM's! :goodjob: This is slightly higher than SirPleb's score of 483.980, noted in this post (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=2598626&postcount=41) in the "Increased Competition in the GPR" thread.
Awesome set of games submitted!
(Edit - reviewing the GPR over the last few Games, SirPleb reached a high score of 487.125 in GOTM41. Dynamic actually topped that with a score of 488.491 in GOTM42, and has slightly extended that score in COTM12 to 490.033. Not much room above that score!)
bed_head7 Jun 11, 2005, 03:58 AM By the way, what happened to SirPleb? He has missed the last few games. Did I miss some announcement of retirement?
And so this isn't deemed completely off topic, congrats to Dynamic and DaveMcW for both putting up dates that make me feel like an idiot for thinking mine would be close to the winning date (I think I could have won by domination in about 570 or maybe 580 as opposed to taking conquest in 630).
Theoden Jun 11, 2005, 04:31 AM Yay, my first COTM award :D Seems like the first milking game in my entire civ career was quite succesful.
And congrats to all those who set amazing records in this COTM.
chunkymonkey Jun 11, 2005, 04:57 AM Congrats to all, some very impressive dates
Re: SirPleb - there has been some rumour concerning some individuals' involvement with Civ4 playtesting - who's to say? :mischief:
solenoozerec Jun 11, 2005, 07:27 AM And in this game I reached one of my dream - 490 points in GPR.
And this is without playing GOTM :crazyeye:
By the way, what happened to SirPleb? He has missed the last few games. Did I miss some announcement of retirement?
He actually did announce that he received an assignment that requires all his time and he will be away for a few months.
Re: SirPleb - there has been some rumour concerning some individuals' involvement with Civ4 playtesting - who's to say? :mischief:
Maybe this is the nature of his assignment?
In any case, I am sure we will see him again :D
azzaman333 Jun 11, 2005, 08:49 AM wow. hendrikszoon won with 100k culture in the same year i couldnt be bothered playing any more. i wish i was good...

AlanH Jun 12, 2005, 03:14 PM BTW, has anyone ever got an over 12000 point victory?

Capt Buttkick Jun 13, 2005, 03:51 AM Often in gotms it would be interesting to see where everyone settled their first city.
Add a column that states first city's placement relative to starting position? Please? ;) [pimp]
In this game, I feel like I did pretty good. Only problem was my scouting sucked, as so often before. So I settled too early. It would be more interesting to compare myself to those who settled on the starting position (or near it) than the wanderers.
I know the data may be available through saves, but I can't be bothered to open all the saves and I never got Dianthus' (sp?) tools working. Besides, I don't know what I'd do with the palace jumpers.
Stilgar08 Jun 13, 2005, 07:08 AM Congratulations to all those great players!!!
And I'm the second best looser! *Woohoo* :D
Nichelle Jun 13, 2005, 07:39 AM Congrats to all the medal and award winners!
It is amazing that there were soooooo many records broken in this game. :goodjob:
Special congrats to Dynamic and Bradleyfeanor, who are now one cow game away from the eptathlon!
I wonder if we shall see them going head to head for the cow in 13? :mischief:
It would be great to watch the spoilers if that is so!
Again, great job to all and thanks to the staff for another great game.
namliaM Jun 13, 2005, 07:55 AM WOW, lots of room to improve that I knew allready.
230 domination victory WOW :crazyeye: Conquest in 70 ??!!! That has to be imposible CHEATORS !!! :joke:
I am just glad I won at all, my first COTM and first time difficulty over Regent. Maybe sometime I will be able to put up some sort of a challenge?!?
Paul#42 Jun 13, 2005, 09:31 AM I wonder if we shall see them going head to head for the cow in 13? :mischief:
It would be great to watch the spoilers if that is so!
What's so great about a cow-spoiler?!? :crazyeye:
Guess I never saw one because going for the cow does not leave any time to take notes...
However it could make a real nice competition and the runner-up could be in serious suicide danger...
Dynamic (14:30), DaveMcW (12:01) and killercane (4:00)
How can these guys be SO fast (and be so good)?!? I spent four hours staring at the starting position
Edit: Spelling
killercane Jun 13, 2005, 12:48 PM I just left the governors on. That helps speed a lot. Once you get your towns optimized you just go get em. I made several mistakes doing so, but I just wanted to see how fast I could go through it.
Megalou Jun 14, 2005, 07:11 AM Dynamic (14:30), DaveMcW (12:01) and killercane (4:00)
How can these guys be SO fast (and be so good)?!? I spent four hours staring at the starting position
I have a feeling that they know what they are doing. Doesn't that answer it for you? The ability to focus on the RIGHT details.
solenoozerec Jun 14, 2005, 08:15 AM How can these guys be SO fast (and be so good)?!?
Playing till 70AD or 50BC (still under impression of that Bradleyfeanor's game) takes less time than playing till 1000AD, so 14 hours is not that fast.
As for Killercane, yest it is indeed an impressive speed.
Paul#42 Jun 15, 2005, 04:21 AM I have a feeling that they know what they are doing. Doesn't that answer it for you? The ability to focus on the RIGHT details.
Yes, I guess that's where I got plenty of room for improvement...
I will have to work on that. Thanks. FOCUS is the name of the game.
bradleyfeanor Jun 15, 2005, 07:29 AM Congratulations all players! I love seeing all those broken records in this game. I don't much care for looking at the RL play times though. Let’s see...if I subtract the hours in which I was actually working while the game was running, that means I played prolly a MERE 60 hours. So it took me over 30 hours to finish a few turns before MiniMe, and killercane finished around the time I was halfway through the QSC. 4 hours?!? 4???? Good lord.
Methinks I must learn to focus on the right details as well, if only to preserve my sanity. I am beginning to think micromanagement has the same addictive qualities of Black-Tar Heroin. Recalling a quote from back in COTM10 by PaperBeetle:
224 hours for me...Until about 1500ad, I micromanaged every tile in every city on every turn...MM is an addiction...
So I shall dub the increasing need to micromanage as PaperBeetleosis. And I am definitely exhibiting symptoms. Must be vaccinated soon. Not ’til after COTM13 though. :)
killercane Jun 15, 2005, 11:34 AM Brad, if i had your tremendous skill at this game I would probably be able to MM a lot more and generally do the things required to win a medal but I think my inattention to detail and poor midgame play will keep me from ever finishing at the very top. Maybe one of these days...
THEMike Jul 27, 2005, 06:22 AM I'm a little confused.
I've been away from Civfanatics for a little while, but I played in COTM12, and even submitted my humiliating defeat, but I'm not on the results page (as far as I can see).
Is it a case of:
1) My failing memory, I played another game or didn't submit or something?
or
2) Disqualified for some reason (what?)
or
3) Something else?
Cheers,
AlanH Jul 27, 2005, 01:02 PM Sorry. The only submission I have in the database from you is GOTM 44.
THEMike Jul 28, 2005, 01:37 AM ah yeah, I thought it was most likely me being stupid. I didn't submit COTM12 as I was reading ahead in the spoilers. I was sure it was that one I had submitted yesterday though, completely forgot GOTM44. Sorry.
