Dont worry about the Hard drives because currently I am going to get another one soon....

It would be a lot easier to just replace most of your stuff. video card, memory, CPU, and HD. Finding a motherboard with all the stuff you want is not gonna happen.

Well infact could you give me a good cheap layout of a computer...dont worry about the drives (HD, CD ROM, And DVD Burners)

I would recommend;-

1) Socket 939 motherboard (preferably Nforce 4 chipset). I've gone right off Asus because their support is crap - Abit's is slightly better. Although Asus do make lovely hardware...

2) Athlon 64 - 3000 Venice or better. Make sure it's a socket 939, and don't forget the heatsink and fan.

3) Enermax or Antec 550W + PSU. You get what you pay for on power supplies.

If you're smart, you'll get a mobo with a PCI-Express graphics slot, rather than AGP. SHould be able to use your current card, but it will be cheaper (and better) to upgrade PCI-Express rather than AGP anyway.

You might have to replace your RAM - so save $100 back for that.

Sound about right or are you going to insist on Intel? Because there's not much available right now that's AS FUTUREPROOF as the above combination.

EDIT: Yes, a San Diego would be nicer than a Venice, but they're currently out of your price range I think.

Yes, but your current RAM should work with it. Your current hard drive CERTAINLY will work with it.

Apart from those very minor points, looks like a very nice spec.

Now give me a few hours to see if I can unearth any horror stories about that mobo, OK?

EDIT: That mobo model number + "problem" returned 118,000 Google hits. Worst culprit appears to be not taking all 4 DIMM sockets with memory at once; clash with Soundblaster Z2s (although this depends on graphics card too); and problems with RAID (not really relevant to you).

If you wanted to go for really cheep, you wouldn't need to buy XP. Use Linux untill you can afford Money$oft. Also if your going to get XP, get Prof. It's slightly more secure. Also if you plan on getting that XP version selected, make sure you know how to install an Operating System, how to Partiton your hard drive, and how to hit a lot of next buttons becasue, the one you picked comes with no manuel what so ever.

Linux can be used for Music, 3d animating, and theres a free Mircosoft Word replacment that usually comes with each Distro. As for Gaming that will require quite a bit of work in order to get it to work right. But in the end you'll end up with $100 more in your pocket and you will have gained valuable knowledge. Also if you ever get stuck the folks at http://www.linuxquestions.org are a great help!

But I am completely oblivious to linux...Plus my dads friend is a computer wiz...he works for the government as a computer programmer and computer maintence out here at the chemical depot (demilitariaztion)

XP Pro isn't any more secure... I switched from Home to Pro a couple of years ago, and the largest difference (other than the dual processor support) is that now it says "Pro" everywhere.

You can use the copy of XP with your current computer on your new one, but whoever gets your computer won't be able to use that copy of XP on it anymore.

You don't need a separate heatsink, the processor will come with one that should be fine if you're not overclocking.

Also if you plan on getting that XP version selected, make sure you know how to install an Operating System, how to Partiton your hard drive, and how to hit a lot of next buttons becasue, the one you picked comes with no manuel what so ever.

I have installed XP in like 3 years so I'm a little vague on the area.

In Home XP, any user can install a program. This is a problem that could more easily allow viruses to take hold or what not.

MarineCorps: That cpu's fine for his price range... myself, I'd even be looking at getting a Sempron and overclocking for that amount of money.

vbraun: Heheh, XP's system does feel archaic when you're used to assigning root access, doesn't it? XP pro doesn't offer any more limitations than XP home against installing programs though, XP pro only offers an extra acount type half way between "limited" and "administrator."

I just noticed you don't have a burner on your system.

None of the data on your hard drive has been backed up onto DVD, right?

First thing I'd buy would be a DVD burner and a stack of blanks. Preferably with Nero 6 or similar burning software (there are free ones out there that do the job).

Just hoping it's going to survive on the hard drive forever is very optimisitc.

Yah don''t need to back up WIndows. Just your data, downloads etc.

How you organise them is up to you.

Do make sure you computer can read the backups before you delete anything from your hard drive.

I bet you've got an awful lot of stuff on it you don't need.

CDs can't read DVDs, but DVD drives can read CDs.

If the memory is compatible, all you would need to get is a mobo, CPU and PSU, everything else is reusable. If you buy less stuff this time, you could spend more time looking for something good. Ah well that's the way I prefer it.

I'd follow Cruddylepers advice and get a socket 939 AMD64 PCI-E mobo and a AMD64 with Venice core (actually I bought just that a few days ago :D ). You'll probably get heatsink + fan with the CPU, at least here I haven't seen any AMD64 CPUs without it.

But I think I am going to buy the Quad Core from AMD when I graduate from highschool...And I will make my PC then.

But right now I just got the idea that I want to build my own PC...but that can wait cuz this one is just for simple games like Civ, Command and Conquer, B-17, and other games that are around that area...

OH I am so sorry Cruddy....my video card is an ATI Radeon Pro 9250...It can take Direct X 9c no problem cuz thats what the CD came with and its what the tech support told me...
