i downloaded the latest vanilla civ 3 patch (i think it's 1.29f) but when i start the game it stills says im running verison 1.07f. any reason why?

Did you run the patch? Simply downloading it doesn't upgrade the program.

Make sure you run the patch, as Xerol said. Also make sure that it's patching to the right place, i.e., that the path in the box is the same path to your Civ3 program.
