View Full Version : RGC3 - To Atlantis...and beyond!

RGC3
For those of you who are not yet familiar with RGC (Rhye's of Civilization Goal-based Challenge (http://rhyesciv.uw.hu/index2.php?nev=MC.html),) it is a GOTM-like contest based on Rhye's phenomenal mod. Every challenge has certain goals, not necessarily related to victory, and players get scores based on how well they complete the goals and bonuses for the challenge. So far we've had one wide-open military expansionist game as the Arabs, and one, more restricted colonial game, as the Dutch.

To Atlantis
The past two games were based on more-or-less unaltered versions of the basic mod... This time, however, there is a large island in the Atlantic - the legendary island of Atlantis. Players will take the helm in the most elusive super-advanced utopia in history (or perhaps in fantasy...) At first they will have to build their island paradise, become scientifically advanced, and generally outdo all of their neighbors.

...And Beyond!
Regrettably, just a few centuries BC, tragedy will strike as Atlantis begins to sink into the ocean later named in its memory. Two legendary Greek heroes will take a select group of Atlanteans into the island's volcano, right into Tartarus - the underworld of Greek myth. There the survivors will find their fate... They will have to literally fight their way through hell to survive, in what may remind you of Age of Mythology or even an action game! This unique game experience will only be available once the more "normal" game is completed.
But I do assure you, the entire challenge is well beyond normal! ;)

The Challenge will begin on Monday, July 11. It is currently in intensive playtesting and you have my personal guarantee that it will deliver.
Rhye's of Civilization Expanded, updated to version 1.23, is required in order to participate in this challenge.

Rhye, I don't know how to say this, but...

I LOVE YOUR MOD, MAN!!!

;)

Ok, it'd be better if I could ever finish a game (still haven't made it past Industrial Age more than once), but that's my fault, not yours. Thanks a lot, Rhye and Blasphemous, I'm clearing my schedule for this bad boy! :goodjob:

But you can subscribe right now.
In fact, from now on, you'll need to send us a mail to notify that you're joining the competition.

Yes, I was very bad. I felt awful having to take over the Chinese, Korean, and Japanese homelands (even razing their inland cities) - it's not my style. But there was no use having some of the spices and silks; I had to have them all.

After the earthquake Atlantis send troops with Greel heroes in the underworld. But how is it possible since I didn't even build a warrior?

Blasphemous
Jul 12, 2005, 05:55 AM
Well part 1's Warrior represents a huge bunch of warriors really, and in part 2 every unit represents one single person... There's only a handfull of them, probably not enough to be represented by one whole unit in part 1.

SK, I'm impressed, in part 1 it took me at first many tries to get the micromanaging right, and then it turned out I was just being stupid and I needed a completely different strategy in my micromanaging.
Anyway, if you start a mod like that I'd love to help with ideas and stuff, let me know when you start working on it.

I tried to send them right after I posted that, but got a MAILER DAEMON. Tried again this morning before work (BTW, 2.5 hours of sleep because I stayed up late playing RoCX: priceless :p ), got another MAILER DAEMON. I'm sending again... it's still rgc.sub@gmail.com, right?

I'm not sure how well I did... got a bunch of goals, but totally ignored some others, lol... Also, about the mod, I don't even have a solid concept yet. I was thinking of something based loosely on AD&D. A small set of weak, upgradeable adventurers to augment a village's militia, maybe against some evil empire, I don't know. There's some fundamental problems about such a mod, but I'll try some things out.

Hope these saves get sent!

SilverKnight

EDIT: Got another MAILER DAEMON... :(

Blasphemous
Jul 13, 2005, 03:52 AM
SK, the mod could work if you simply make it an OCC with no improvements, wonders, or techs. You simply get a base and it produces units. You could also start every player with say, three settlers, and make it an elimination game.
One fun setting for the game can be a simple random mix of fantasy stuff based on the graphics available. No plot, no background material, just a shissload of cool units.

SilverKnight
Jul 14, 2005, 12:40 AM
Rhye, I don't have your email, only the RGC one I've posted before. Could you email me with it, since I can't send attachments through the site. :( And I wanted to be the first one to submit, lol.

After working out some ideas of what I wanted to do, I found myself describing something VERY similiar to the DragonLance mod I've been wanting to do, so I'll just crack down on that. The old thread is here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=92421), but it's not 100% up to date on my progress. I'm actually watching "The Matrix" wth my friends right now, and am resisting the urge to try to mod it, lol! I'll post a new thread about the map and mod whenever I get around to it.

BTW, I only played each part of RGC3 once, since I didn't want ANY reload penalties.

I've started part 1, and I've got two scientific leaders so far - one with literature and one with philosophy.

With the first one, I thought I had an unbalancing advantage but kept going because others may have also had lucky breaks.

But now with two of them, I'm not sure. I'm going to keep going just to see how far I can go. But if you think this is unfair, I'll play again from this point, disbanding the second scientific leader.

Rhye
Jul 16, 2005, 07:18 AM

Danger Bird
Jul 16, 2005, 01:24 PM
Ok, I've finished part 1 now and even with the scientific leaders/fast wonders I couldn't meet all of the victory conditions. It will be interesting to find out when this is over if anyone did, and if so, how they did it.

Now on to the mysterious part 2!

Blasphemous

Just submitted my RGC3 savegames.

First part was really great, I didn't quite like the second part though...nice idea, but it just isn't working well with civ3 imo. Most annoyingly, at first I lost all my 3 galleys to the first 3 turtles (which I consindered rather idiotic :crazyeye: so I restarted part 2 after some 10-20 turns).

Nonetheless I enjoyed the challenge, especially part one. Time was crucial - it soon became clear that it just isn't possible to achieve all goals, and that maybe the most important decisions are what to research first... I won't go into details until submissions are closed, but it's probably no spoiler to say that we entered the Golden Age 4 turns before the end
Oh, and the Greeks respawned in South Africa, hope that still counts as elimination...

Rhye
Jul 23, 2005, 01:03 PM
10 submitters so far, and tomorrow is the last day of the 50pts bonus.

Judging from the results, this is a really amazing challenge.
Amost everytime I receive a new submission, the potential winner changes.
It has moved through Blackbeard, Soma, DangerBird, Riker and a couple of others: this is due to the fact that even a low score can affect the top 5-6 ranks through the bonuses among contestants.

Blasphemous
Jul 24, 2005, 01:28 PM
I found that in both parts it's easy to find everything stupid and unfairly hard, but after a few tries you learn how to avoid major problems like losing your ships in part 2.
There's no rule against trying the whole thing again, you only lose points for reloading in the span of saves between the starting save and the submission.

Jeff1787

Rhye, I guess it wouldn't have been possible to modify a multiplayer game for part 2 so that the turns were timed? I've no clue, but it seems plausible. It would have been even more like an action game. I was a little nervous loading it up that you may have found a way. (nervous because where I play I usually require a pause in the action, not because I am scared of a challenge)

Rhye

EDIT:
Now then, about the RGC goals.

They won't be changed.
Not enough people agrees, and the competition credibility is far more important than a balancement issue.

When the results will be posted, I'll post here the alternative rating that would have been in that case.

I've decided to follow UWS's suggestion and I'm sending a proposal of change to every submitter.

This is the text:

we (the RGC Team) would like to know your opinion about our proposal of a slight change of the RGC3 goals.
Since the earliest submissions, we've noticed that some of the goals were impossible (such as "Control the Pyramids") and that Part2 was counting too much compated to Part1 in terms of points.

So, we would like to tune the scores a bit with your approval, as this would be retroactive. It will apply to both who has already submitted and who hasn't yet. The files would be updated accordingly.

THESE WOULD BE REMOVED
-Control all the 7 Ancient Wonders of the World at the end of the game = 40pts
-Build the Great Library = 30pts
-Control the Mausoleum of Mausollos = 30pts
-Control the Pyramids = 30pts

THESE WOULD BE CHANGED

-Greeks eliminated by 1300BC = 120pts INSTEAD OF 80
-Control cities in top 5 list at the end of the game = 10pts per city INSTEAD OF 5
-Game score bonus = 1pt per 5 game score points INSTEAD OF 1pt per 10
-Build a mine on a source of Orichalcum = 15pts each INSTEAD OF 30
-Settler safe in the victory location = 80pts each INSTEAD OF 100
-MALUS: -10pts per each time the final savegame has been reloaded INSTEAD OF -5

Please keep in mind that the potential winner isn't changing with these tunings.

If it is OK for you, please reply with "I agree" either by mail or here in the forum.
The proposal wll pass if I have 50%+1 of the sumbitters (so, 8)

Congrautulations, Barak! :king:

That was a great challenge, Rhye. I only played the one time (my submission), but I think I'll give it another go- just for fun- now that I've forgotten most of it! :)

I liked the 2 part nature. My part 2 score was hindered by losing one of my great heros to a Hydra

Looking forward to playing RGC4!

hahaha that isn't true.

In fact, before Barak sumbmission, Blackbeard, Danger Bird, you, Soma and another one I don't remember have been the 1st.
Then, due to the modifiers (+100,50,25 to the highest score, +100,50,25 to the earliest score, etc.), the following submissions altered the order again and again).

Did you play a peaceful Part 1?

Yes, in part 1, I played a peaceful game trying my best to build the wonders. I did not make a beeline for sailing, so couldn't get troops onto the continent soon enough to conquor land.

Part 2 for me was all about survival. Early on I tried to kill as many Hydra and centaurs as I could, but after losing a hero, tried my best to survive, build my mines and get my settlers home.

Now this is just odd. On rhye's website with a window in the news of the civfanatics thread. Interesting feature Rhye.

Anyway, is it possible to grant access to both parts so we can play it recreationally now? I joined in the challenge but never had the chance to actually play. I still want to (at least for fun) but was curious if part 2 would still be available.

So how's the RGC4 coming along? Just thought I'd ask, morbid curiosity only. I LOVED RGC3 for the short, time-driven challenge, just so ya know... ;)

SilverKnight

there are two ideas for rgc4. One is very similar to rgc2, the other is more similar to rgc3. The latter is more likely to be chosen.

In any case, I'll begin preparing it hopefully after mid-september, because the civ4 stuff has the priority and it's taking all of my time.

With the approach of my 200th post and the release of Civ IV, I've decided to quit deluding myself and just drop out of college. Astrophysics is fun, and gives me something to do at 3 and 8 AM, but Civ is life. No joke, I'm going to study at a Buddhist monestary, become one with my inner Civ, and hone my modding skills for Civ IV. I await it with great anticipation. Om, mani padme hum... :worship:

Grr... can't... hold out... much... longer...

:bump:

I hate double-posting, but just so no one keeps freaking out about RGC4, we have at least one confirmed tester (yours truly), and V. Soma mentioned he wouldn't mind testing, as well. The more people that help, the quicker we can get RGC4 rolling before Civ 4 gets here, if anyone's still interested in helping a good cause. :)
