Hopefully this will be a little more acceptable. It can help us all appreciate better the images we see in this thread.

AN ANALYSIS OF PHOTOGRAPHING MODELS WITH 3 DIFFERENT KINDS OF LIGHT

You can tell that they are using a 'golden uplighter' here. This is often called a 'Lastolite'. It is that circular reflective material you often see someone holding beneath the face of a presenter. These come in silver, white, gold and also black (to block the light). Often with different tones on either side.

Now the reflective surfaces come in two types really. You get the matt finish reflector boards, which produce a soft 'diffused' light, which is gentle on a face.

In the example below, the photographer is clearly using a 'metallic' finish lastolite, producing a more direct and intense light source. This is risky. If your model has imperfections in her skin, such direct light will enchance that. Direct light is a very unforgiving light to use. It usually creates unnaturally strong shadows across your models face, distorting the proportions of their features. You can work round this though (see below). It is often wise not to use direct light sources when shooting models, when you don't have good make up artists to hand. In this case the model has both good skin and a good make up job.

Moreover, they have used the lastolight to rechannel the strong golden light of the sun from over her shoulder and - my favourite - to catch the gloss on her lips, from completely the opposite direction. :goodjob:

Above, you can see that the sunlight on her right shoulder is very intense. It has burnt up the image and is quite overexposed. That's a :nono:. But it has allowed for said light redirecting to take place. Such intense sunlight provides for excellent - especially golden - light to be rechanneled onto your model. (Although you can of course recast the colour of that light with any chosen filter on your lens).

Below you can see that the photographer has opted for a more diffused light. This may have been achieved one of two ways in this shot. Either they:

a) used a 'polyboard' (literally a polystyrene board painted white or black) and used this to block the direct fall of sunlight (the asisstant is probably holding it to the photographer's left) or

b) That it was a cloudy day and the photographer is relying on the sun for his light source. Either way, it is a much safer light to use, if a little dull and unpredicatable. NOTE: That clouds in the sky may be exploited in exactly the same way as a reflector board can.

DOUBLE NOTE: Although this may sound ok for still photography, trying to shoot motion picture at the behest of cloud cover is asking for trouble. You get an impatient and irritable crew, mounting expenses as you pay for them to 'wait for the light', a general lose of momentum and it makes it very difficult to shedule those days' filming. If you have trouble scheduling, then you can bet your bottom dollar you will have trouble budgeting. Hence my rule of guidance: it's generally a dicey game relying on sunlight.

Now this third exhibit is of flash photography in action within a controlled envirnoment ie. studio. You will notice that the photographer seems to have complete control over his/her light sources. The image is well balanced between highly exposed and less well exposed areas. However, the model is neither over, nor under, exposed anywhere. The joys of studio photography!!

Now this photography has quite obviously used "bounced flash light". These are the umbrellas you see in professional photography studios. The flash lights are typically directed away from the model, but rather into the 'umbrella', with then bounces a pwerful but nonetheless diffused light directly at the model. These lights are VERY intense, consume a great deal of power and the elements in the 'lighting head' has a very short lifespan. You do of course gain complete control over your lighting with such equipment.

My guess would be that this photographers set up was as follows:

KEY LIGHT 1: Provided by a bank of flashes (as described above), about 1 meter from the model's head. They would probably be working from just over her right shoulder, hard onto the right side of her head.

KEY LIGHT 2: Much like the first key, but this would come from slightly over the model's cheekbone, more face on. This is important because it provides a certain 'fill light'. As well as a key light. ie. It fills the shadow created by the first Key Light and vice versa.

FILL LIGHT 1: Notice that the model's left buttock has a halo around it. The line of her buttock is actually lighter than the rest of it. This tells us that a soft 'fill light' has been employed. And that is standard. If this was not done, then there would be a gross imbalance in the image and her legs would be in too much shadow. I would say that this first fill has come from directly behind the model, far back in the studio. Very gentle and well diffused.

FILL LIGHT 2: You will also notice that the model's left arm has a similar halo or highlight. This again tells us about the first fill light. But there is another detectable source, much more gentle. Notice that the halo on the arm is brighter than the one on the buttock. Well how can that be if the light is far behind her? Well obvious really. The photographer has employed a second fill light, closer in to the model and probably placed at 90 degree angle to the photographer. This would be used specifically to 'fill' her arm and flank.

@ Rambuchan, are you now a photographer critic?Well I trained as a photographer initially. Since the age of about 15 I've spent hours in dark rooms and studios, messing about with all kinds of lights, film stocks, lenses, chemicals etc. Part of my degree specialised in fine art photography, so I got to indulge myself even more. As a result, I've been given a pretty good understanding of lots of different photographic techniques. Remember I also used to run film shoots, which always involve an element of fashion photography, or creating a look. So there's plenty to share about what goes into creating these images we are seeing. With all this stuff from my degree and college in my head I don't just see the babe but imagine how they went about achieving the whole look. It's pretty good fun if your so inclined. Estella Warren - the majority of these are shot with just natural light, the odd diffuser / reflector here and there. But you get an nice simple, earthy quality for your model as a result. The excellent, understated make-up job adds to the overall effect too.

Blatant flash photography in action below this text. But the point is that this is the kind of image you get from LOW SPEED FILM STOCK (ie. 100 ASA rather than 400 ASA).

Low speed film stock typically gives you more detail than higher speed. This is because there are more silver nitrate crystals/pixels/celluloid grains on the stock to hold light information. This does however mean that you need MORE LIGHT to properly expose these. This is why the photographer has chosen to use flash photography. You can see the flash is bouncing off the cupboards and skin and everything. Obviously harsh direct light, only lightly diffused.

You can get round excessive light by lenghtening the exposure ie. the time that the shutter is open for. This gets blurs when your subjects are moving. The model is in a dynamic state here and therefore he/she went for flash.

You can tell all this about the stock by the amount of MID TONES (ie. the grey's between black and white) in this case it is beiges and creams. Compare this level of mid tone detail with the two below and you can see this is low speed stock.

Here we have two examples of HIGH SPEED FILM STOCK (ie. 400ASA - 800 ASA). These kind of stocks give you higher contrast, because there are fewer mid tones. You get LESS DETAIL, but require less light to expose them properly. Just look at the left side of her face, there is hardly any detail on it. But there is contrast.

Incidentally, sports photographers have particular sensitivity to film speeds. Because their subject is moving fast, they need a very fast shutter speed/exposure. This used to mean that they used high speed stocks which were very grainy, but that is no longer the case. Here is a very FAST STOCK. If you look into the leaves behind her, you can see the grains of greens and yellows. If this were slow stock, it would be smooth and the grains would be undetectable. Again, the right side of Estella's face here has fallen into shadow. With a lack of midtones this comes out as a deep dark well, giving contrast but depriving her face of detail.

@Rambuchan. Now i know why you got so technical about the photographs. I prefer the actual photograph and what is inside of them. Since you can explain the technical side much better that me, why don't you critique this picture of Scarlett Johansson. I have posted this one before, but it my favourite picture of hers. This one is quite large, so it will be in greater detail.

@ Hero: I don't make much of that photo mate. Rather I don't make much of what they did to it. Some dude go drunk and went crazy with the airbrush on an otherwise good quality shot IMO.

Actually the base image is quite to my liking. It has rich deep tones, which all balance well together. The orange of the sofa gives the image some fire but the tones closer to biege and cream rest near her face and give her a serene but complimentary 'palette'. These cooler tones work better for Scarlet's blonde look.

LIGHTING SET-UP: The photographer has done an excellent job on this IMO. Here's my guess of what he did:

Key Light 1 > This is coming from directly behind the model's head. If you drew a line along her right bicep area you would get the same line of light. You can see it is super bright and not diffused at all. How? Her hair is burning up to white, nearing over exposure. Also look at the super bright light which crept through onto the front of her blouse. Super bright again.

Key Light 2 > This could either be a) A much softer diffused light from directly about her or b) A reflector board with an eggshell finish, giving the same soft diffused light, to fill out the shadows created by such harsh direct light.

Fill Lights > These are off where her legs are pointing. There could be one brighter one (most likely) or two little ones close together. You can tell their positioning by the way her left hand, peak of her nose, blouse and inside of the right arm is lit. The photographer could have dimmed these 'fills' a bit to produce a higher contrast image.

THE JUICEY BIT: I think the photographer has 'pushed the film' here. I used to do this a lot because it gives you much deeper, richer colours. This is done by both a) exposing the film at a higher film speed than it actually is. This means setting your camera to 400ASA when the film is actually 100ASA. b) You have the film pushed in processing. This means you develop it for longer than usual for the speed of film. Again this enhances the vitality of the colours. It's a great trick.

Notice: If you do the reverse and 'pull' the stock, this means you end up with a thinner density of colour. This makes it difficult to manipulate the image later as it does not contain so much detail and colour.

HOWEVER!!!! Despite all this niceness, you can see that someone has recked the image with the air brush tool. IT'S ALL TOO SOFT AND SMOOTH! :gripe:

Her breasts, right arm and particularly forerhead contain hardly any detail at all! Those areas, and others, have been smudged so to speak. The detail has been lost and if I were the photographer I'd be shaving that artist's dog and frying his goldfish by now. :mad:

Of course they probably did this to hide imperfections in Scarlet's skin. But as we know, she is of flawless beauty and neither she, nor the photographer, need this kind of digital artistery abuse.

Yes I am. I do find that airbrushing the picture actualy ruins the picture. We know that noone wil have perfectly flawless features. In fact, I believe that imperfections is actually perfect. There is way too much airbrushing going on, and it seems that there are no pictures available without this feature. Very Good analysis.

Thanks mate. Glad you found it useful. I too like to see those imperfections but there is a real art to getting the balance right without any airbrush nonsense.
