The second post of this thread includes a part of the History log of this game. Unfortunately, the post hit the character limit, and I got back to college, so I won't be able to update it anymore.

5th round on - up to 20 turns
*** (accepting no more players) ***

Configurations:
- Level: Regent
- Civilization: German
- World size: Large (70%)
- World: Temperate, Normal, 4 billion.

This succession game will have a set of edited rules. To play it you have to download the scenario file (attached in the third page (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12355&pagenumber=3) of this thread). I've recently noticed that the download doesn't really seem necessary. Anyway, you should use the scenario just to be sure.

Changed Gameplay Rules:
- All hit points have been doubled.
- All naval units, except from galleys had their movement increased.
- Another cultural level was created, "in love with".
- Raised the forest value in shields to 20.
- Corrected upgrade problem.

Succession Rules:
- 1st/2nd rounds: 20 turns.
- 3rd/4th round: 15 turns.
- 10-20 turns from 5th round on.
- After a saved game is uploaded, the person on deck has 24 h to state that he's ready to play. Otherwise, he'll be skipped. The player has a total of 48 h to play the game.
- If you won't have time to play or if you want to drop the game, please let us know in advance.
- 5 players

And so it begins!!!

1625bc - As diplomatic relations with Japan started to falter, warriors were sent to the Japanese territory as a demonstration of power. "Apfelsprechel (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=151960#post151960)" - Hans Günther Apfelsprechel a.k.a. Morten
From archeological evidences much information was gathered from this period. Bones remnants found in the ruins of the ancient Japanese cities of Osaka, Kyoto and another site, not yet identified, seem to indicate that large armies of German knights, during Apfelsprechel’s reign 1480-1550, invaded its neighbor Japan and burned their cities to the ground, in an attempt to control the entire continent of Alenes. Large numbers of the Japanese population was enslaved and sent to work camps in Germany. A large battle seems to have taken place in the area known in records as "The Strip", where a superior Japanese army was singlehandedly defeated by two German knight divisions. In the last years of Apfelsprechel’s reign, German immigrants settled in a city they called Apfelsprechel, in honor of their leader. Apfelsprechel is also known for initiating, though not finishing, the great Smith Company in Belindaville, angering the Greeks for not sharing his wisdom in economic matters and appeasing the Aztecs. It seems, his people were much dissatisfied with the war, and historians today consider his reign a most turbulent period in the German History.
"Japan Is No More (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=152842#post152842)" - Smiley IV
In the period of 1550 to 1625, the cities of KANGsville and New Katzenstein were founded. The GDA performed several trades deals of advances and luxuries. The Babylon empire and Germany signed a Military Alliance Pact against Greece, which was suddenly broken, enraging the Babylonian diplomatic envoys. Not satisfied with the Republic, the German people revolted once more. All of the Japanese cities were razed, wiping the Japanese empire out once and for all.
"Democracy, Trade And War (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=154011#post154011)" - Chancellor Rymisster
(1625-1695) - Rymisster rose to power by popular demand. During his government, Anarchy ended and the German Democracy was formed. The approval rating of the new government was extremely high. The German diplomats were pretty active in this period. Several agreements were renegotiated and Germany opened embassies in the Aztec Empire, Greece, India and Russia. In 1670, Rymmyland was founded. After settling for peace with Babylon, the Aztecs created a diplomatic incident and declared war on Germany. The Aztec cities of Zitlaltepec, Umma and the formerly German city of Fukushima were captured as the last act of Rymisster. Nevertheless, the war was not finished when he died (unknown cause) leaving the Aztec counter attack to be dealt by the next ruler.
"Power Transition (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=155607#post155607)" - President Pggertzrel
(1695- 1768) - Following the mystery of Rymisster death, President Pggertzrel assumed the German Democracy. His first act and the main priority of his whole ruling was the improvement of Germany's economy. The great project of Smitzer's Trading Company was finished during Pggertzrel government and proved that Germany was the financial center of the world. Umma joined the Babylonian Empire. The Aztecs were thrown out of Alenes after the capturing of New Ashur in 1700. However, when a huge Aztec fleet appeared next to Alenes seashore, Pggertzrel decided to seal a Peace Treaty, as long as Germany received a war tribute for the Aztecs wrongdoings. In 1760, The Forbidden Palace was built in Edo decentralizing the power and diminishing corruption throughout the German Empire. Eight years later President Pggertzrel died leaving Germany as the most scientifically and economically prosperous civilization in the world.

With timetable I meant a table for how long our reign lasts in game years, because the years change. But we'll get along without it, if we just count each turn carefully. :)

Question : How do we play with the modified bic + the save game? -Won't the save keep the changes? Probably not...
So do we have to exchange the original bic, or can we use load scenario, then load game?

Also, I take it, that everybody has installed the patch?

Rymiss and Gumby, I'm adding both of you to the game. Even though I was planning a 5 players game, 6 is still a good number. If we're lucky, and nobody drops the game, we must play at least 7-8 rounds each. Pay attention to the 24h rule, so you're not skipped.

Smiley is next, right after 6chan posts his turn, which will probably happen soon. I suggest that everybady subscribe to this thread, so you don't miss any move of the game. Finally, have a nice game. :D

2900 ---Berlin builds settler --ordered to build granary to ensure speedy growth. Pggarpolis builds warrior. Ordered to build settler, sinze the city just got size 2. Warrior ordered to patrol settled area to prevent barbarian raids; sent north to protect worker building road. Vandals SE of pggarpolis teaches our archer Ceremonial Burial. Great! we can now build temples! :) LOTS of gems to the south; lots of good trading later. Settler is ordered to the far east plains to try and secure an eastern boundary; gap can be filled up later. Warrior reaches southern coast of our continent. Warrior got some gold to the east

2850---warriors sent east along the coast and mountain ranges to the south. The southern mountain range is hereby baptized the Mortenius Mountains; famed for their rich and precious gems. pggarpolis warrior sent north to explore northern frontier and clear possible barb camps

2630---The leader of the socalled Japanese seeks our attention. He wishes to trade. Our first diplomatic arrangement! We trade bronze working for the wheel! the japanese doesn't seem too advanced. We have two techs more than they. Hmm. seems they have just settled south of their former border. Gotta get some settlers over there, to all that fertile grassland across the desert. Lots of wheat over there. Discovered another barb camp to the SE. Northern coastline established. Nothing but mountains and ice to the north.

2590---our archer engages a barb warrior protecting the goody hut. could be bloody. He gains veteran status! And a warrior joins him. The warrior engages the camp next to the goody hut. He is victorious! and plunders 25 gold.

2550---the japanese city is called Osaka. Seems we can get a big piece of land over here, if we contain the japanese a bit.
2510
2470--Pggarpolis produces settler! New orders : another granary! Belindaville production orders is changed to worker, we need more workers to build roads. We've got horses NE of Belindaville!
2430
2390--barb hut discovered NW of Japanese lands--settler heading east to wheat territory
2350--phoenician village unfortunately deserted -bad luck!
2310--our warrior engages barbs in the barbaric hills SW of Japan -and wins an easy victory!
2270--our troops continue to explore the continent west of Japan, and protect our settler headed for the green lands-they discover a barb camp in the middle of the plains.
2230--settler within reach of green country--Belindaville worker ordered to build road to Pggarpolis.
2190--barb camp destroyed and plundered for 25 gold.
GAME SAVED.

Economically we're doing well. In the reign of the Mortenius dynasty our income has doubled from +2 gold, to +4. Research project has been changed from mysticism to Alphabet, in the hope that we someday can obtain the wisdom and literature and build the greatest library in the world. Lots of fertile lands to the east we can settle once our cities have grown a bit.

Pggar, I think you should keep the first screenshot somewhere in the thread. Its fun to think back to where it all began, once we get a large empire. You can exchange the attachment in the first post once everyone has dl'ed the bic-file. Also, the founding and conquering of cities should definitely be on the list of important events. :D

I added our cities to the log. :goodjob: I'm a bit worried, however, imagine when we have 50 cities or more. The log will be gigantic. Let's see if that is feasible.

Dec 20, 2001, 05:44 AM
OK, I guess later on we can summarize things like "1210-1480 --great chinese war. Beijing, Singapore and Hongkong conquered and burned to the ground" -it'll be a bit tedious if the same city gets taken time after time. But the game looks very promising, so far. That free settler was very lucky; it has given us a head start.

Yeah, and if we colonize the east as quickly as possible and get a good military then we can crush the japanease quite early and easyily.

Dec 20, 2001, 06:55 PM
2150 BC: Smiley, a shrewd member of court, performs a coup, killing all the members of the Mortenius dynasty except a distant cousin. He seizes control of the kingdom.

Granary constructed in Berlin. A settler unit begins construction.

2070 BC: Peace Valley founded in grasslands west of Osaka. With planned border expansion, it will contain two wheat and one cattle. Production is begun on Barracks.

2030 BC: Fighting on borders of Osaka. Barbarian forces presumed.

1990 BC: Barbarians raze road north of Berlin. Later attack; Warrior stationed in Berlin attains Veteran status.

Lawn added to palace.

1950 BC: Our forces begin buildup near Osaka.

1910 BC: Japanese settlers spotted heading west.

Berlin finishes construction of Settler; construction of Colossus begins.

1870 BC: Berlin settler begins journey to diamond fields of south.

1790 BC: Japanese construct Tokyo north of Peace Valley.

1750 BC: Seijuk tribe gives map of region.
Turning point:
The Seijuk map teaches us two important things. One, the location of the Japanese capital of Kyoto. Two, our landmass is an island except for a narrow land bridge east of Japanese territory. A nearby Warrior moves to blockade the land bridge.

1700 BC: Road from Belindaville to Pggarpolis completed. Worker planned to make horse colony.

Pggarpolis riots; Entertainer recruited.

1650 BC: Land bridge successfully blockaded.

Peace Valley finishes Barracks; work on Spearman begun.

1625 BC: Osaka territory breached by our troops. Tokyo territory breached by our troops.

Smiley Falls established in diamond fields; Temple begins construction.

Japan demands removal of troops. War is declared.

Pggarpolis completes Granary; work begun on Warrior.

1600 BC: Tokyo attacked; Warrior falls in attack. Tokyo remains in Japanese hands.

Osaka attacked.
Losses:
2 Warriors, 1 Vet Archer (German)
1 Spearman (Japanese)

Osaka remains in Japanese hands.

Peace Valley Riots; Entertainer recruited.

1575 BC: Berlin riots; entertainer recruited.

Belindaville riots; entertainer recruited.

1525 BC: Smiley turns reign of empire over to successor after spectacular military failures.

I thought I could seize Osaka, and maybe Tokyo. Que sera, sera. Anyway, I recommend that the Warrior at the western edge of the continent not be moved-very much. One Japanese settler past him, and the Japanese will stay around like a bad fungus for years to come. I heartily believe in breaking the kneecaps of a foe as soon as possible.

I'd let Peace Valley complete the Spearman, and then use its large population base to rush buy a large army of veteran archers. I strongly believe we could conquer Japan in this method.

Pggarpolis' warrior should be used to fortify Belindaville, and then have it build another for itself. Smiley Falls is far enough away to not worry about protection, but I suppose that's up for my successor to decide.

If Japan decides to call peace, I suggest establishing a city on the blockade.

Good luck.

Morten Blaabjerg
Dec 20, 2001, 07:58 PM
You attacked the Japanese!!!! Argh! We're toast.

I predict Peace Valley to fall shortly to the Japanese, I bet we'll be facing stiff opposition. Or do you feel we have the upper hand? hmmmm.... We lost a lot of military there. I feel we now have to build a lot of military soon, which will hamper our growth. :(

We need to build a lot of temples soon. Can't wait to see the map.

Here's our sticky situation. We are at war with the Japanese, we have two warriors (the mighty German army), and the Japanese don't want to talk.

Since war was started, we'll have to end it probably by destroying the Japanese. The drawback of this scenario is that we'll be hold back in science and expansion.

The best Japanese unit is most likely the archer. Defensively, we can live with one spearman and an archer in Peace Valley. To attack a Japanese city we'll need at least 4 archers and one spearman. I'm updating Germany's History with its first war.

There's no need to panic, yet. Here's a take on our current position. Rymiss, your first task is to hush the spearman in Peace Valley. If you ask me, I think you should keep building the Colossus in Berlin. Also, I think Peace Valley, Belindaville and Pggarpolis should be changed to unit building only.

Good luck Rymiss, you have 48h to play. I hope you can get us back on track.

Sorry if my message is a bit confusing. It's late, and I need some sleeping.

Dec 20, 2001, 11:10 PM
Lucky I had nothing to do today, I got to play it so early.
Anyway, my round was... interesting, so here goes.

1525BC- Smiley is overthrown and his distant cousin Rymiss takes over the German Empire!

Road to Gems completed, Citizens of Berlin are happy of this. Warrior in Pggarpolis completed, production switched to Barracks for vet units.
Cracked my whip in Peace Valley and produced Spearman, Production switched to Warrior.

1500BC- Spearman fortifyed in Peace Valley. Switched to Barracks in Belindaville as well. Pggarpolis Warrior starts his journey towards the Warrior defending the strip of land into the next island just incase of need of extra protection from Japanease.

1475BC- Barracks in Belindaville completed, Production now on Archer.

1450BC- 3 Japanease units at Peace Valley border. 1 Regular Warrior, 1 Vet Warrior and 1 Elite Archer :( . Rushed another Spearman in Peace Valley for extra protection.

1425BC- Spearman fortified in Peace Valley, Japanease ready to attack next turn. Cutural Advisor tells me the Japanease are also building the Oracle.

1400BC- The German Empire in a state of worry! Peace Valley burned to the ground by Japanease troops!! The Jap Archer and Warrior that attacked only sustained 1/3 damage to them both as well  . Barbarian Horseman at northern Berlin borders, Warrior heading to former Peave Valley changes course to eradicate the Barbarian camp in far north. Rush producton of Spearman in Belindaville for defence.

1375BC- Barbarian kills northern worker. Spearman fortified in Belindaville.

1350BC- Barbarian now heading for Berlin.

1325BC- Barbarian attacks Berlin and dies horribly. Pggarpolis Barracks completed, Production switched to Archer.

1300BC- Japanease warrior appeared in front of worker building road to horses, worker moved south.

1275BC- Whip on rampage, rushed Archer in Pggarpolis and Spearman in Belindaville. Japanease Warrior goes for Belindaville

1250BC- Archer heading to attack Japanease warrior heading for Belindaville. Spearman heading to defend Pggarpolis. Japanease want Peace Treaty and 160g, I accept....FOR NOW! ;)

1225BC- Belindaville production switched to Settler and same with Pggarpolis. Archer is going to secure former Peace Valley spot for new cities. Worker going to resume road to horses.

1200BC- Nothing of interest.

1175BC- Warrior finds the Barbarian camp in the north and will eradicate it next turn.

1150BC- Barbarian Horseman spotted near our Warrior protecting the strip. Warrior in north kills 1 Barbarian Warrior defending the camp, 1 Horseman left defending it.

1125BC- Warrior protecting the strip defeats attacking Barbarian Horseman. Warrior in north defeats the last standing Barbarian defending the camp and gets 25 Gold for us for destroying it.

1100BC- 3 Barbarian ships spotted off northern coast. Another Barbarian Horseman approaches our Warrior defending the strip. Warrior that defeated Barbarian camp in the north is heading towards the island beyond the strip to explore it and kill any Barbarians and hopefully make contact with a friendly civ.

1075BC- Warrior at the strip defeats attacking Barbarian. Archer ambushed by Barbarian Horseman at former Peace Valley spot.

1050BC- Fortified Archer at former Peace Valley Spot. After giving into the Japanease Lord Rymiss feels heartbroken and decides to jump on a cliff onto jagged rocks.

Goals- Need to Colonize the east again and keep that strip protected as always! Build up a fairly big army and good defense. Hopefully we can make contact with someone friendly and powerful on the island beyond the strip, could persude them to take care of our Japanease problem

I hope I do better on my next round and Good Luck to the next player!

I think it was a bit premature declaring the japanese war without a decent military to back it up. Instead we could have feasted on the wheat and built up culture. We were pretty much ahead, now they've caught up on us. :(

But good thing we have peace now. Lets just grow ourselves out of the misfortune the Smiley dynasty has so ill-advisedly brought us. ;)

Well, you were right bout predicting the fall of Peace Valley hehe.
But at least we got Peace and we have still got the strip blocked off. If we expand quick enough and take as much territory as possible the Japanease could still be stuck with those same 3 cities by the time we are ready for war :D

I think it was a bit premature declaring the japanese war without a decent military to back it up.The temptation to get some cities early is too strong. I find myself doing that same not-so-advised move in several of my games.

Here's an update of our situation. We have to secure the horse. Our next tech should be Horseback Riding because it's much easier to fight with a mobile unit. My suggestion for our next cities are attached below.

You're up Gumby (24h conf). We need to expand.

Here's our current situation.

Rymiss, I think that if you had built an archer instead of a second spearman and had attacked the Japanese archer, Peace Valley wouldn't have felt (possibly). As the military advisor say offense is the best offense. Anyway, this will stay as a what if thing.

Let's complete my twenty turns. My primary mission will be expansion

Let the glorious empire of the Germans expand!

1025 BC - The wisemen of our Empire master the skill of Alphabet. They're now after horsebackriding. We need those mounted units if we want to battle against Japan. The worker building the road to a place where I will build a town later has finished. The warrior on the east defeated a babarian horse.
Alright, next turn

1000 BC - Pggarpolis finished a settler. Building antoher archer, because we might have to go to war with the Japanese again if they rune our expansion plans. I don't hope so. The settler is heading for the destination Pggar told us. The eastern warrior goes back to his old position after his battle with a barbarian. Next turn

975 BC - Well, nothing intresting happens. The archer is still watching for Japanese settlers, but so far nothing spotted.

950 BC - Another barbarian horse on the east. No problem for the warrior becoming elite status. River Encampent founded and is now our most eastern city. Starting the production of a barracks.

925 BC - Unexpected attack of barbarian on the east. Warrior almost died, but he still got 2 HP. I'm putting him back to its original position. A worker is building a road to the place where our next city will be

900 BC - Well, bad news, a japanese settler is approaching. I cannot declare war on Japan. It's going to be a problem, because we're greatly outnumbered, so I just hope he isn't taking my spot. Our eastern warrior is back in position and it's end of turn.

875 BC - Japanese build the city of Edo next to our spot. I'm afraid I couldn't help it. A war would have been greater problems. I'm sending our settler to another spot, but that one is not as good as the other one.

850 BC - Changing the production of pggarpolis back to settler, because we need those cities.

825 BC - A lot of barabrians coming from the north. I use the warrior there to defeat one, but I think our warrior will not last one turn with all those barbarian activity.

800 BC - Barbarians near the city of Berlin. I can't do much about it. Hope they don't destroy the defense.

775 BC - Civil Disorder in Pggarpolis, but that's no major problem. Barbarians are pillaging the roads near Berlin. I could attack the horse with the defense unit in Berlin, but the horse get 100% defense bonus. I decide to do it anyway and with succes. I'm getting the north-warrior to a mountain, so his defense bonus will be a little higher. Moved science up to 50%. We really need this.

750 BC - Japanese warrior from the west. Defense-warrior returning back to Berlin.

730 BC - Settler in place and Peace Valley recreated. Not exactly on the same spot, but I couldn't do better. More barabrians heading from the north. Next turn I'll investigate when my warrior is fluly recharged.

710 BC - Pggarpolis completed another settler. I'll build another city near Edo. Barbarians attacked northern warriro, but no problem with 100% defense bonus. I'll send our northern warrior to find their camp.

690 BC - Nothing happens. Warrior is still searching for camp.

670 BC - Again nothing important. Our warrior located barbarian encampment.

650 BC - Berlin completed the oracle! Warrior destroys the encampment and we get a nice 25 gold. I'm getting him back to his old position on the mountain top.

630 BC - Switched production of Berlin to another Settler, so we can get one or two cities in the East before those Japanese do.

610 BC - River Encampent completed barracks. Now switched to worker. I suggest a granary after the worker.

590 BC - Smiley falls completes temple and is now switched to worker. Settler arriving on spot. Next turn: new city.

GAME SAVED!

My mission for expansion was not bad. One new city, one new city in next turn and two settlers are being produced. We need city's on the east so that should be our top priority. I recommend we avoid war with the Japanese at all costs, at leat for now. However I would like to see Edo to be ours. I also think we should get some more science, because if we ran too much behind than we have a problem.

Good luck for the next one!

Here's a screenshot of our achievements so far.

Well if we stick the new city next to the river so we can irrigate that would be good and then we could build a barracks in it and just pump out military units from peace valley and the new city until we can invade the japanease maybe? Just an idea. Good luck Sixchan! Make the German Empire proud :D

I vote for that grassland spot between the incense hills. We need lots of production, and need to make sure the japanese don't expand too much. The settlers being produced can then fill out the rest of the spots.

Expansion!!!!

570bc - We gave alphabet and 208 gold to the Japanese in exchange of Iron Workings and Mysticism. Good news, we have iron. The bad news is so does the Japanese.

550bc - We now master the technics of riding horses.

510bc - Berlin built a settler.

490bc - Incense Hill founded.

470bc - Our workers built a road to bring horses to berlin. Barracks were finishe in Peace Valley. A settler left Pggarpolis.

450bc - Worker finished in Smiley Fall.

390bc - Granary built in Belindaville.

370bc - Settler left Berlin.

310bc - Moo Point founded.

290bc - Gave the Japanese the 23 gold they demanded. We have lots of unprotected cities, and we would lost at least two of them if a war were started. Pggarpolis riots. Brought a spearman back there to solve the problem.

250bc - Berlin finished barracks.

230bc - Bright River fouded.

210bc - Semideia founded.

190bc - Ironspot founded.

Ideas & Suggestions:
- There's a barbarian camp to the north of Berlin, we should go there to get those 25 gold. We're really short in money.
- There's a settler heading to Peace Valley. We should try to get him to the other side of the Japanese territory, and explore where no man has gone before.
- Without Map Making the Japanese can't cross our warrior barrier unless they declare war. So by no means you should give them Writing when we finish researching it as it would put them closer to Map Making. Also, the Japanese have two settlers close to our northeast borderline, and no place to send them. Because of the aforementioned facts, expect hostility from them in the near future.
- River Emcampment should be switched to temple as soon as it finishes its spearman. A cultural border expansion there will close the core of our territory border.
- Berlin is starting to rebuild our army producing horsemen. Pggarpolis, Belindaville and Peace Valley should help on military building as well (those are the cities with barracks).

I'm here changing the length of the 2nd round to 20 turns. If I don't do that, turns will end too fast, and there's no need for that as we're still expanding in this large map.

Pggar

190 BC -PEACE AND PROSPERITY TO THE PEOPLE -MORTENIUS IX INHERITS VAST GERMAN EMPIRE

130 BC -Civil unrest in New Peace Valley. Entertainer hired. Temple ordered constructed in remembrance of the fallen heroes of the First Incense War. After japanese bit for the same territory, warrior charges on barb camp and obtains Elite status. Our settler is going east. He spots two japanese settlers looking for a place to settle down.... Hmmm.

110 BC -Barb camp raided and gold taken. We need more workers. Cities unable to build spearmen fast switched to warriors and then workers.

90 BC -We discover a new form of communications called writing. It is very complex, and one can fabricate very detailed messages and documents using it. It is not so widespread yet, so only our wisemen can actually read the strange signs. They suggest we open en embassy in the japanese capital, and we follow their advice, so that we might later benefit in trade and in war. Incense Hill orderedd to build worker. All frontier cities should have temples, and let the core cities produce our military. Military buildup starts in Peace Valley. Research project now literature, which means we can compile whole volumes of socalled books, full of signs. This will be a great benefit to our nation, so say our elders. And we can be allowed to build the greatest library. Even now we should begin to contemplate the architecture and site for this huge project. This can only be brought to success via the combined efforts of several generations of our people.

10 BC -We agree to a rights of passage treaty with the japanese. There are only bad territory left in our empire, so they should be allowed to go look for settler spots (in vain, but they don't know that), and we can go explore to the far east. And later on, our rights of passage treaty will make devious designs such as backstabbing much more feasable.

70 AD -Seems the japanese wants to settle in two spots, north of River Encampment in the city of Nagoya, and south of Pggarpolis. Mortenius IX grants them their rights in recognition of our rights of passage agreement and our inability to wage war effectively at this moment. Before war, we need temples. And new japanese cities will soon fall for our culture.

90 AD -Japanese city of Izumo spotted to the south of Pggarpolis. Those cities will fall easily later. Mortenius IX issues a new policy of combined culture and military. We need more mines to compete in the wonders race.

110 AD -Barbarian hordes defeated in the Battle of Katzenstein, our great general who will lead our immigrants to new and finer lands in the far far east.

150 AD -Military build up on japan border continues. Archer has fortified on their iron spot in order to pillage their road if necessary.
170 AD -General Katzenstein spots hordes of barbarians in the rich fields of the new far east. Prepares for battle against several larger armies assembling near their camp.

Morten Blaabjerg
Dec 23, 2001, 01:53 AM
190 AD -O Glory! O Honour! The battle is won! Our settler can now settle in the grasslands east of Japan.
210 AD -Katzenstein is founded in honour of our great general who lead us safely into areas unknown to man.

NOTE : Watch out for japanese expansion into this new region. Our warrior is not guarding the strip no longer, so he needs to be replaced soon. The japanese are all over our lands, and they seem much stronger militarily than we. We can't fight them unless we have a larger military. And a much stronger cultural basis.

Smiley, you're next. GOOD LUCK! :)

I had a big summary typed up, but Mr. Computer decided to be a poop, so I say forget it, and summarize the summary.

I meet England and get Masonry for contact w/ Japan, and Philosophy for our entire treasury.

I complete a road to Kyoto, and trade gems and our only horses for contact with the Babylonians, Polytheism, Mathematics, their territory map, and 6 Gold. I immediately pillage our own square of horses, and laugh at Japan's stupidity. I then offer them the gems again for 6 gold/ turn.

(This presents an interesting idea. Keep rebuilding that road to horses, selling them to Japan for something, and pillaging it. Hah, take that, loser Japan).

We discovered Literature. I think the Great Library is the only way we can hope to keep our head above water in this game, so it is an essential. The horse strategy above may be just as effective, but it requires years of long, peaceful, happy relations with Japan.

Oh, and we found Map Making, care of the Bulgars.

Thats an unusual idea! :) Does it really work that way?

It seems we can begin to work together in peaceful co-existance with Japan. I'm just worried they'll get too many swordsmen before us. But I think you're right. Go for the GL ASAP. And with the contacts we have now, we can sell our discoveries and earn a steady income.

I don't know if pulling shenanigans on the Japanese would work effectively. It may, it may not.

However, I doubt we'd ever be able to sell our advances. The civs we have contacted so far have at least four more techs than we do, and I think Babylon is already into the Middle Ages. It was a good thought, though.

I'm finally back, and I'm updating the thread. So you guys found another exploit? Did it work? I think once you break your part of the deal, the treaty is broken for good. I'm not sure though.

Besides, there's one problem with pulling shenanigans on the Japanese. Once you start the production of an unit, you're able to finish it either you have the resource or not. So, selling horses to the Japs will probably give them some horseman.

Sorry I took a bit long, family stuffs. But here goes.

430AD- Rymiss II rises to power to make up for his ancestors faults. Got contact with the Romans for 10g off the Japanese.

440AD- Gave Polythesim to Romans for Contact with the Aztecs.
Fortified Spearman on Gems North of Berlin and Horseman on the Horses next to River Encampment. Peace Valley production changed to Libary. Fortified some troops near the Japanese cities Tokyo, Kyoto, Edo and Izumo. Aztecs offer Code Of Laws for 100g but I reason with them to get Code Of Laws for World Map and 20g.

450AD- Pggarpolis produced Worker and started on Habor. Swordsman completed in Smiley Falls & Archer in River Encampment, production switched to Spearman.

460AD- Temple completed in Bright River and production changed to Swordsman. Road to Horses started on.

470AD- Libary in Peace Valley completed and production changed to Walls. Roads to Gems in the South and North being started.

480AD- Indians complete The Great Lighthouse and Aztecs are building the Great Libary. Horseman being sent to scout South of Katzenstein and look for good city spots as well as eradicating Barbarians.

490AD- Babylonians building Great Libary, English complete Great Wall and then they start building the Great Libary. Road to Horses completed. Try to offer Horses to Japanese to try that trick but they refuse to even let me GIVE the Horses to them? They may be getting some from somwhere else.

500AD- Spearman completed in River Encampment and production changed to Temple. Spearman sent to defend Berlin. The Cultural Influence for Bright River expands. Road to Gems in the North completed.

510AD- Libary completed in Moo Point and production changed to Barracks.

520AD- Japanese and Babylonians sign a Military Alliance against Rome. Walls in Peace Valley completed and production changed to Swordsman in hopes to build a great Swordsman militia to defeat the Japanese. Road to Incense from Incense Hill started.

530AD- Babylonians totally wipe the Romans off the face of the Earth! Belindaville produced Libary and started on Temple. Traded World Map, Polythesim and Code Of Laws for Egypts World Map. Can now see the islands of Egypt, Babylon, England and Aztecs.

540AD- Rushed Settler in Peace Valley with a plan to colonize south of Katzenstein before the Japanese do.

550AD- Settler from Peace Valley sets off and production stays on Settler.

560AD- Rights Of Passage between us and the Japanese expires but I managed to start it up again by giving them the World Map and 50g. Belindaville's Influence expands. Japanese settle area right next to Yokohama south of Katzenstein.

570AD- Road to Gems in South done. Rushed Harbor in Pggarpolis.

580AD- England wants our Gems for nothing so I tell them to stick it up themselves and they went nuts and declared war:mad: . Harbor in Pggarpolis done & production started on Swordsman. Influence expands for Peace Valley. Barracks in Moo Point done and now building a Granary. Swordsman done in Bright River. Egyptians building Great Libary. Embassies established in Egypt and Babylon. Tried to get Military Alliances against the English but noone will accept.

590AD- Aztecs complete Great Libary so Berlin production is changed to a Libary with a loss of 102 sheilds :( . Horses found deep south of Katzenstein in a big plains area.

600AD- JAPAN AND ENGLAND SIGN MILITARY ALLIANCE AGAINST US:eek: ! Japan Archer is killed by our defending Spearman and a Japanese Warrior is killed attacking our Swordsman in North. Our Archer killed by Swordsman near Kyoto and another of our Archers defeated an attacking Swordsman. Settler captured. Peace Valley production switched to Swordsman. Our Horseman gets knocked down to 1 HP by defending Japanese Swordsman and retreats into friendly grounds near Tokyo. Swordsman kills Spearman defending Izumo, Archer perhishes attacking the second. Horseman kills defending Spearman in Nagoya. Swordsman kills second Spearman defending Nagoya. Warrior dies when he bravely attacked Sapporo. 1 Archer dies attacking Edo and the other kills the defending Spearman. Archer kills Japanese Spearman defending Kyoto.

610AD- Near Kyoto and Tokyo Japanese troops kill 1 Horseman, 1 Warrior and 1 Archer. Near Edo 1 Archer dies and near Izumo our Swordsman kills attacking Archer. Swordsman dies attacking Nagoya. Swordsman dies attacking Izumo.

620AD- Ironspot completed Libary and production changed to Swordsman. Swordsman dies attacking Edo. Another Spearman sent to defend Berlin. Archer attacks Shimonoseki and dies. Horseman attacks Nagoya and perishes. Swordsman attacks Izumo in a desperate snatch for the city and kills the last Spearman defending the city! Production in Izumo instantly started on Temple.

Well thats my round. Our Army is now VERY small, we need peace ASAP. Also secure a city near those Horses south of Katzenstein. When the other civs get Harbors trade our big supply of gems with them for a very nice income. I would advise everyone to download my save and just take a look at our position, use the save for viewing purposes because i cant take screenies. Good Luck Gumby :goodjob:

Gumby, you're up!
The picture shows our current position. Your main goals are the reconstruction of our of army and the signing of a Peace treaty with Japan (if advantageous).

Remark: I really think swordsmen are good only for the final strike. To weaken the defenses of a city, we should use horsemen since they damage the defense unit and then retreat without being killed.

Good Luck!

This is my 200th post. This footnote celebrates that important event. :D

Blast it, we lost the Great Library. If we want any hope of winning now, we must become extremely militaristic. Forget culture. Monarchy (which we are currently researching) should be the ideal wartime government, as it has paid labor and no discontent. After Monarchy, the only techs we should get should be through huts and peace treaties. Translation: Once we get Monarchy, drop Science to 0%, and put Luxuries at 20% or so. Then, pump out unit after unit.

Crush the Japanese like their beetle namesakes. Pump out dozens of Warriors if you have to.

Let the German Empire rule! (I hope)! Well, the sage continues:

630 AD - My time as emperor starts bad. England and egypt have signed an alliance with each other and now declared war on us. That's bad. Horseman attacking Jap. warrior. Wins. Getting some military up to get those northern cities.

640 AD - Incense hill completing swordman. Switching to horseman. Uzomo needs entertainment. Getting attackers back to town for regeneration.

650 AD - Berlin completes swordsman. River Encampment temple. Katzenstein must hold worker in city, because Japanese warriors.

660 AD - Katzenstein fell to Germans because of an attack wave around 6 archers.

670 AD - Babyloniërs are building Hanging Gardens. I was able to
capture the city of Nagoya . Captured one worker. Sending him to East. Attacker remains in city because of ressistance. Switching production in Smiley Falls to horseman. Attacked the city of Shimonoseki and weakened their defenses.

680 AD - Pggarpolis created swordman. Belindaville created temple. Resistence in Nigoya ended. Aztecs are building Hanging Gardens. Another attack on Shimonoseki and razed!!! + 14 gold. Switching production in Berlin to settler and switched production in Pggarpolis to Library. A worker near Smiley Falls is improving the terrain.

690 AD - Attacked by raiding parties. No problem. Getting military near Nagasaki. Getting some workers to work.

700 AD - Massive troops are coming from Japan. Berlin completed Settler. Switching to Spearman. Peacevalley completes swordman. Kills archers next to the city. New settler heading towards location of old Jap. city.

710 AD - Bright River completes swordman. Sending more military to Nagasaki and might have an idea to crush Edo.

720 AD - Babylon threatens us to give gold and a map. I'll give them what they want. We don't want another war at our hands. Semideia completed temple. Some soldiers are resting in town.

730 AD - Attack on River Encampment. No problem for the defense. River Encampment produced Swordman. Scouts report that Edo is well defended.
Starting Attacks on Nagasaki ... One spearman destroyed... The other one too. Nagasaki captured + 14 gold + worker. Only one Jap. city left in the far North. River Encampment switched to Spearman. Far North is founded on the place where once a Jap. city was.

740 AD - Berlin completed spearman. Smiley Falls completes horseman. Switching to Library. Change production of Ironspot to Spearman. Rushing a spearman in Peace Valley. We might need it fast, because there are many Japs near the city. Destroying archer near Edo creating a veteran swordman. Moving spearmen to our less defended cities because Japanese threat is coming too close. Preparing an attack on Sapporo.

750 AD - Bad news. They got peace valley. My spearman was too late. I'm trying too strengthe our borders, but it won't be easy. I don't know if we lose more cities. Currently River Encampment is the next problem. Next turn. (I'm a little afraid to hit Enter now)

760 AD - YES!! They didn't attack River Encampment, but are going for another town. I'll get them there. Belindaville produced spearman. Bright River too. Switching to Library. Wisemen discover Monarchy. Switching to Construction. I'm not going to start a revolution right away. First defenses up!

770 AD - Berlin completed Spearman, switching to Harbor. Nagoya completed Spearman, switching to Library. Captured the city of Capporo from the Japs Berlin switches production to Settler to found a new town there. Setting science from 40% to 50%. We have a shrink of -7, but we can handle it for a while. Besides it cuts down construction from 22 to 12 turns. I hurry production the Settler in Berlin and we start a REVOLUTION It means anarchy for a while.

780 AD - Nagoya is under attack, but is defended well. Japs are building Hanging Gardens.

790 AD - The Japs are offering a peace treaty. First they ask 80 gold for it. But now I we both got a peace treaty and right of passage. So my plans are to build military in Japan for a surprise attack. Our defense is strong enough for surprise attacks.

800 AD - Aztecs are threatening us. I give the gold they want. Still Anarchy and Japs are founding new city. With right of passage, we might be able to found a new city near Umma after the revolution, so I keep our horse there. River Encampment switches to Library.

810 AD - So far for the city idea. Japs are coming with Settlers.

820 AD - NEW GOVERNMENT MONARCHY . About time. English building hanging gardens. Egypte building hanging gardens.

830 AD - Moo Point produced granary. Switching to swordman.

That's it. Ofcourse a summary and a screenshot.

------------------------------------
Peace with Japs.
War with English and Egyptians
Gained 4 cities. Lost 1
Defense stronger
----------------------------------

What should the next person do:

----------------------------------------
Build offensive units for surprise attacks on Japan (Peace Valley, Edo)
Get our science up. (Building libraries right now)
Get a city in the North (Berlin is building Settler.
----------------------------------------

The save is located in my next post. Good luck to the next one!!

General Pggar V assumes the German monarchy with prospects of war against Japan in the near future.

840ad - Settler left Berlin.
900ad - Nextrem was founded.
910ad – Since Japan didn’t want to give Germany what it demanded, war was declared. Our Horseman army defeated two spearmen in Edo without any fatal casualty, and now the city is ours.
920ad - The Japanese city of Eso was destroyed. We made peace with Egypt and signed a rights of passage deal with them.
930ad - Resistance in Edo has ended.
940ad - Established trade route with the Aztecs. (Dyes - Gems)
950ad - Edo lost a swordsman in a fight with a Japanese Horseman. The Japanese sent reinforcements to Edo (2 spears, 1 sword, 1 archer, 1 warrior). One spearman and the swordsman were damaged.
960ad - The warrior and the archer died attacking Edo (making our spearman elite). The damaged units retreated. The remaining spearman was killed by two of our horsemen.
970ad - Japan send 5 veteran swordsmen to Edo. 2 were destroyed and the other 3 were damaged. No casualties.
980ad - Japanese swordsmen retreat to recover. General Pggar V finishes his reign sealing peace with Japan (only one swordsman lost in battle) in exchange of currency and contacts with Greeks, Indians and Russians. Our historians state that the discovery of Engineering marked the passage of the German empire to the Middle Ages. As we are the only civilization with the knowledge of Engineering, this advance proves itself as a great commodity. Pggar V decided to trade it with the Aztecs first (since they have the Great Library), and in exchange they gave Germany Republic, Feudalism, Monotheism, World Map, 5gold/turn and their whole treasure (23gold). The German empire is now researching Chivalry. Got Greek fur in exchange of gems and 7gold.

Summary
We should have at least a few catapults to defend our border cities.

The Japanese have horsemen now, and that's not good. After we retake Peace Valley (and rename it to War Valley), we should try to destroy the Japanese road connections to horses and iron. It's quite important that we take their iron before they research Chivalry (Samurais).

Don't make world map exchanges in the near future. The other civs maps are worthless because our world map is up-to-date. There must be an uninhabited continent (or at least islands) to the southwest of Alenes (our continent). The civilization that expands there first will have a huge advantage in the future. We should look for something there.

All civilizations but Japan (furious) and Egypt (polite) are annoyed with us. We're the sixth civilization in the histograph, but our score will start to grow a lot from now on. The Japanese are the only civilization impressed with our culture. Our demographic rankings are pitiful. All civs have money problems since all treasures are close to 0, and Greece has the greatest amount of gold (7), which was given by me in the last turn. India, Greece and England don't have Feudalism yet.

We're back to the game, but we need to conquest all of Alenes territory and make our cities reach size 12 fast.

Here's our current situation:

980 AD Call for reforms make way the Reformist king Arthur Schneider, crowned Mortenstein IV. Barracks! Science! Trade! We must develop our nation into a worthy empire, superior to our neighbours

990 AD Mortenstein investigates the trade opportunities, which seem thin, since almost everybody seems to be bankrupt. Rights of passage is negotiated with Japan, who seem most eager to invade our lands once again. This treaty will allow us to position our forces for a deadly strike against Japan. Mortenstein is quite surprised, when he discovers the poor financial state of his kingdom, and that even border cities doesn't have barracks, and therefore old-fashioned troops fighting with spears cannot be upgraded to modern day pikemen. But he sets out to change these things. Reforms shall come!

1000 AD We have no cities prepared for wonder building. All workers are ordered to mine areas which will add to our chances of building Sun Tzus Academy. Our armies are sent north into japanese territory to prepare for a surprise attack.

1030 Our forces are in position. Bad news. The spearman in Peace Valley has been upgraded to a pikeman. We decide to attack before further japanese reinforcements can arrive. Their iron source is pillaged, and we strike. Great news! Peace Valley is ours once again. And Tokyo falls to our superior forces.

1040 Our forces recuperate, and we prepare for moving forward, once our backup infantry arrive.

1050 Bad news. The babylonians demands engineering and when refused, they declare war. They are not on this continent, so it won't mean much, I figure. They weren't good trade partners anyway.

1070 Japanese swordsmen crosses the border near Edo. We prepare our defences. We attack their capital Kyoto, and after prolonged battles conquers the city. We decide to keep this city and rename it Mortenstein. It was a bit tempting to burn it to the ground, our forces are somewhat depleted at this state, and I wonder if we can hold out until the japanese decides for peace again.

1080 Japanese swordsmen taken down one by one. We try to starve Kyoto to prevent popular unrest and switchover to japanese.

1090 It turned out to be a mistake to keep Kyoto. They have deposed our governor and declared their allegance to the japanese. Here we go again. This time it will BURN!

1130 "C'mon! Three steps ahead and one step back, is still two steps ahead!?" The people don't seem to think so. They depose of Mortenstein after the Kyoto failure, and demand a new ruler.

NOTES

Good for us : the japanese are beginning to produce archers instead of swordsmen, since they've been deprived of their iron. It is imperative, however, to crush them and burn Kyoto down soon, before they rebuild it too much, and continue the steady production of our military. Do not forget, however, to mine and grow our cities. They are pitifully small and unproductive, at least when it comes to wonders. We might actually lose out on SunTzu's. It is not really realistic to get it.

I say we wait with the republic until the japanese war is over.

I think I had a pretty good reign. I jacked up the treasury, ended all the wars, got Fukushima...blasted Osaka, though, will have to be razed next time we go to war. There's a considerable force of Knights on the Japanese border for the next person to use. About a half dozen or so. I say crush Japan.

There is also the matter of the Republic. Should we, or shouldn't we? Then again, these are all questions for my successor. Good luck.

We're now a distant fourth on the score ranking. Our main problems are the lack of infrastructure, our cultural level and the population size (7th). Anyway, we're in a good position. We just have to stop losing our captured cities.

Alright, heres my report

1265AD- A relation of the late Rymiss II was a Knight named Vykran and due to popular demand he obtained power of the German Empire!

1270AD- River Encampment built Cathedral and production now on Marketplace. Fukushima built Harbor and production now on Worker. Knights moving into position to strike and capture Nara.

1275AD- Japan tells us to move our Knights and I declare war. Rioting in Tokyo and Entertainer assigned. Knight blocks and kills a Japanese Horseman trying to sneak into our territory. Horseman stationed in Fukushima assaults Toyama and kills 1 defending Spearman.

1280AD- Finished research of Invention, research now on Gunpowder. Greece wanted to trade Territory Maps and I accepted to keep them happy. An attacking Japanese Horseman defeats our Knight in Japan borders. Our Knights lay waste to the 2 defending Spearman in Nara and capture it. Nara renamed to Liberty Capital to celebrate the peoples release from the evil Japanese oppression. Knights now closing in on Kyoto. Production in Tokyo changed to Pikeman to help against possible attack from an incoming Horseman. Our Horseman kills last defending Spearman in Toyama and razes the city to the ground!

1285AD- Pikeman in Tokyo recruited and production now on Libary. Our Knights converging on Kyoto decide to divert to Liberty Capital to defend against oncoming Japanese wave of troops.

1290AD- Belindaville built Marketplace and has began recruiting Knights. Unrest in Moo Point so some entertainment was assigned. Aztecs completed Sistine Chapel. Our 2 Knights racing towards Liberty Capital ambush 2 Japanese Horseman that were about to attack Liberty Capital and defeat them. Horseman that razed Toyama resting in Fukushima.

1295AD- Indians offered an exchange of Territory Maps and I accepted to keep them happy. Knight defending Liberty Capital killed attacking Horseman and Archer but finally fell to the last Japanese Horseman. Dome added to top of German Palace. 1 Knight died attacking the last Japanese Horseman but the second (and last) Knight killed the Japanese Horseman in a fit of rage. Traded Gems for Ivory with Babylon. I finally manage to get England to sign a Military Alliance against the Japanese by adding some Gems and Incense into the deal.

1300AD- Pillars added to Palace. Aztecs completed Sun Tzu's Art Of War! Berlin production switched to Leonardo's Workshop.

1305AD- Evil Japan capture Liberty Capital!! Edo production switched to Knight.

1310AD- Our Swordsman sneaking up on Liberty Capital ambushed by Japanese Elite Swordsman and murdered. Assigned entertainment to Pggarpolis due to rioting. Knight trained in Nagoya and production changed to Barracks. Traded Gems to Eygpt for 6 Gold(Per Turn).

1315AD- War Weariness is beginning to show. Entertainment issued in Edo due to more rioting. Granary built in Belindaville and production now on Libary. Aqueduct completed in Iron Spot and production now on Marketplace.

1320AD- Japan and Babylon sign Military Alliance against the Aztecs. Babylon demands some Gems. I accept for the time being. Granary built in Semideia and production changed to Aqueduct. Worker issued in Fukushima and production now on Barracks.

1325AD- Knight trained in Belindaville. Sending Knight from Belindaville and Knight from Nagoya to recapture Liberty Capital.

1330AD- Japanese Horseman tries to assaults the Nagoya Knight waiting for Belindaville Knight but dies and our Knight went Vet.

1335AD- Marketplace built in Moo Point and production changed to Knight. Horseman defeats 1 Japanese Spearman defending Sapporo. Lord Vykran is assasinated by a Japanese Ninja while working on Invasion plans.

After Liberty Capital got captured I tried contacting the Japanese but they wouldnt answer. We defiantly need to build up our Army more but i reckon we should be able to defend ourselves against any Japanese attacks for now. Especially when we get Gunpowder so I advise to keep at war and keep battling till the end.

Gumby3000
Jan 01, 2002, 11:24 AM
Let us BEGIN::

1340 AD - Izumo produces barracks, switching to Library. England completes Leonardo's workshop. Sending attacker from Sapporo back to rest in town.

1345 AD - Switching Berlin to marketplace. Nextrem completes Marketplace. Switching to knight. Sending forces to Libarty capital

1350 AD - Berlin completes marketplace, switching to knight. Hurrying barracks in Fukushima so that our horse can rest there faster.

1355 AD - Tokyo produces Library, switching to Marketplace. Attacking Libaerty Capital, one knight lost

1360 AD - Tokyo under attack. I don't we're in trouble. Belindaville produces knight, switching to Forbidden Palace. Highest corruption there. Nagoya barrcks, switching to Marketplace. A new attack on Liberty Capitol and with success. We have it!! However the defense there is now very weak. If Jap. destroy the city I will build a new one there. Sending attacker back to Sapporo after rest period.

1365 AD - AS I expected Liberty Capital captured by Japs. Need stronger military.

1370 AD - Tokyo attacked. No Problem. River Encampment produced Marketplace, switching to knight. Incense hill produced knight, switching to galley so we can create a trading route to Fukushima. Babylon completed J. Bach's cathedral. Attack on Sapporo failed. Lost by 1 hitpoint. Not good.

1375 AD - Tokyo attacked again. No problems. Berlin completed knight. Pggarpolis completed marketplace. Switching to knight. Edo produced knight. Switching to Library. Wisemen discovered Gunpowder. Researching Education. Troops are almost ready for an attack on Libert Capital.

1380 AD - Tokyo still under attack, but defensive units are doing their jobs. Ironspot completed Marketplace. Switching to knight. Loaceted salpeter. I will build a road to the spot as soon as possible. Captured Libarty capital. Producing barracks. Next town will be Kyoto! JEEZ!!! They got an army there. I think I choose another city to attack.

1385 AD - Japs are trying to get libarty capital back. They will not succeed!

1390 AD - Nothing special.

1395 AD - Japan and England sign peace treaty. Tokyo needs entertainment. Moo Point produces knight.

I'll play the rest of my turns tomorrow. Any tips are welcome.

Rymiss,

You are too consessionary to foreign powers. When they say 'Jump!' you say 'How high?' In future diplomatic relations, always try to take as much as you give, if not more so. If they ask for a trade of maps, make them a counter offer. Take off their map offer and ask what they want for their map. They usually give a small sum of gold. And you could have probably denied Babylon's gem request without fear of war. Besides, they are an off-continent power. The worst they can do is hurl insults from across the sea.
Oh, and I think that restarting the war on Japan so soon after the last one was a mistake. Just my opinion, of course.

Gumby (and all others),

Due to Japanese ability to recapture cities, I think we should stick with a policy of razing all Japanese cities, and later replacing them with our own. In this way, we gain a large force of free workers, and don't have to worry about Japan gaining new ground.

Gumby,
Have you finished Leo's Workshop?
Have you started any other trade deals? There were some opportunities in Rymiss savegame.
I don't think we need to haze every Japanese city.
What are the units in that army? Spearmen or Pickmen?
A defensive army is quite strong.

After you finish, I'll play and update the History log.

Sixchan dropped the game and now we're back to 5 players. Actually, we're 5 since the beggining and that's the optimal number of players I was looking for.

Do you guys think 15 turns is good? When the game gets too slow we should play 10. Any feedback on that?

I now have time to finish my rounds. I don't think starting a war with Japan was a bad idea. I think we can conquer whole Japa if we want to. But my turns:

1395 AD - Attacking Kagoshima. One spearman destroyed.

1400 AD - Liberty Capital attacked. Attacking units destroyed. Berlin completed knight. Nextrem completed knight. Switching to Library. Succesfully captured KAGOSHIMA!! . Knights in the far north of our territory are sent to the frontlines.

-----------------------------------------
THE END (FOR NOW)

My successor should capture all of Japan. I don't think that's too difficult. There are some knights coming up. Get a oversea traderoute open so we can get horses to fukushima to get knights. Be sure to build a library in all our cities so we are the first one with brand new units. I think we're gonna make a chance!!

1405ad - Captured Kagoshima. Too many horsemen attacking, so I seal a Peace deal. I got Sapporo, 3gold/turn and 17gold in return. The trading branch of the GDA started to work. The English gave us 24gold/ turn for incense and spice for gems. The Babylonian ivory - incense deal was renewed. Gems was traded with the Aztecs in exchange of world map, 3gold/turn, 12gold and Astronomy. Incense sold for 17gold/turn and 72 gold. Sold incense to the Egyptians for 8gold/turn. Our people revolt. They want a new government.
1410ad - Egyptians: 7gold/turn for gems.
Greece: furs for gems, wmap and 84gold.
Printing Press negotiations:
Bought from
Aztec - 19gold/turn wmap 113gold
Sold to
England - 9gold/turn wmap 8gold
Greece - 6gold/turn wmap 7gold
Egypt - 1gold/turn wmap 20gold
Russia - 0gold/turn wmap 20gold
Spent - 3gold/turn 58gold
That's a good action because it breaks the treasure of England and Greece, and it increases the global science rate.
1415ad - Aztec demand tribute. I refuse because they're not mad to the point of giving up the money and the luxuries.
1420ad - Zzzz.
1425ad - The Japanese army appears to light. It has a horseman, a swordsman and a spearman. It's destroyable.
1430ad - Cleopatra demands tribute and is refused. Nothing happens.
1435ad - The German Republic is established.
1440ad - Sold Gunpowder to Russia for 14gold/turn and 30gold and gems for 7gold/turn. Gave gems, wmap and 30gold to Greece in exchange of furs.
Music Theory negotiations:
Bought from
25gold/turn from the Aztec
Sold to
Egypt - 16gold/turn + 50 gold.
Greece - 30gold
Since we were losing too much in trade negotiations with the Aztecs, I decided to renegotiate peace with them. So, now we're at war with them. This trick is risky. Let's hope they can't get to our continent. Don't expect that any nation accept a per turn deal with us from now on. At least Babylon is polite to us now (they were at war with the Aztec before). Give gems as a gift to the Babs as they can't pay for it and are the only ones who can help us if the Aztecs decide to attack.
1445ad - Sold Incense and Music Theory to Russia in exchange of Wine and 2gold/turn. It's official, every civilization in the globe is broke.
(10)1450ad - Lots of cities love the chancellor. The German people offered to expand the palace (2 times in the same turn, they're really happy).
1455ad - Upgraded our defenses.
1460ad The Aztec have Navigation. They're able to get to our continent now. Lets hope peace comes first.
1465ad - Oops! An Aztec knight and a swordsman arrive to Sapporo. They don't want to talk. Nobody wants to buy Sapporo. I gave it to the Babs since it'll be conquered.
1470ad - The Aztecs got Sapporo. We discovered Banking. Going for Economics.
1475ad - The Aztecs don't want to talk yet. Sold Music Theory to the Indian for wmap, 4gold/turn and 12gold.

To Do
- We have to build Smith's trading company, change the production of Berlin as soon as we get Economics (9 turns). The only way we can grow in this game is by economy. It helps that we have the gems monopoly, and that we'll have the incense monopoly as soon as we finish with Japan.
- Make peace with the Aztecs. Our military is pitiful.
- Connect the saltpeter source to our road net.
- Use the workers in the better cities. Those bad (tundra, mountain) cities should be left for later.
- Continue building palace in Belindaville. A future wonder should be built there.
- When Edo finishes the marketplace, it might be a good idea to build the Forbidden Palace there. It's a pretty good location for that.
-Be careful with the caravel. We don't have Navigation yet, so it might sink in ocean tiles.

This will be a hard game to finish because we're taking too long to destroy the Japanese. Everybody has Navigation but us. Besides us, only Russia holds the Knowledge of Banking. I don't know if it would be smart to trade banking for anything because, doing so, would make us more likely to lose the race to Smith's company.

Here's the current situation in the East of Alenes.

2. After we finish off the Japanese, we should switch to Democracy. Unless we somehow find we have the opportunity to conquer the world

On the last turn of his reign, all records were lost, when the machine storing these records backfired and went cold. Only a note containing the mysterious message "The program has perfomed an illegal action and will be closed" remains.

But from the archeological evidence, we can gather more information about this leader of the german people. Teeth remnants found in the ruins of the ancient japanese cities of Osaka and Kyoto and at another site, not yet identified, seem to indicate that large armies of german knights during Apfelsprechels reign 1480-1550, invaded its neighbour Japan and burned their cities to the ground, in an attempt to control the entire continent. Large numbers of the japanese population was enslaved and sent to work camps in Germany, largely building the foundation for the many german wonders, which were yet to come. A large battle seems to have taken place in the area known in records as "The Strip", where a superior japanese army was singlehandedly defeated by two german knight divisions. In the last years of Apfelsprechels reign, german immigrants settled in a city they called Apfelsprechel, in honour of their leader in these hard times. Apfelsprechel is also known for initiating, though not finishing, the great Smith Company in Belindaville, and angering the greeks for not sharing his wisdom in economic matters. He did not live himself to see the results of these economic reforms, and secretly admired the warmongers before him, who did not have to limit their government within the tight boundaries of the republic. It seems, his people were much dissatisfied with the war, and historians today now considers his reign a most turbulent period in the german history.

Notes:
Japan is toast. We can now settle japan nice and quietly, while guarding the strip effectively against their attacks. Remember to check the economy, since the wartime required to put science down and luxuries up quite a bit to prevent unrest.

The game seemed to crash every time I got to 1555, so here's the savegame. Hopefully the next player can work a way around this crash...

Very well done, now the Japanese arent even a threat to us. We can either choose to wipe them out completely or just keep them contained. Up to the next player tho.

Sounds very good, Morten. I've got the game, and will get it done tonight.

The computer bonked out on me too (the records, not the game itself). So here is a short summary.

I built KANGsville and New Katzenstein. I made several trades of techs, incense, and gems to various nations. I got Babylon to declare war against Greece. I started a revolution (Next guy, switch to Democracy). I razed all of the Japanese cities, wiping them out once and for all.

Now we have to fill out the remaining areas on our continent and focus on winning the space race.

One more suggestion for the far future: When we get nukes, we should target Egypt. They look very vulnerable.

You have your 15 turns Rymiss. It's amazing how no one got skipped in this game. Nice work.

Take your time Ry. I'm doing a massive History update.

BTW, have you sent a pm to CornMaster. I didn't see you in the Democracy Game. Weren't you joining it?

Rymiss, you have a lot of trade to do. First, since the Babs don’t have money to buy anything, we should give our 2 luxuries in exchange of their 2. To do that you’ll have to brake our lux-lux agreement with the English (Spices - Gems). After you’ve dealt with the Babylonians (made a lux-lux deal and renewed the other ), all you have to do is go to the English, Russian and Egyptians and increased the price of all the luxuries we’re trading with them. The Indians treaties are about to expire in a few turns as well (IIRC), so take a good look at them.

I'm just finishing the History log update, and I have to say this. Morten, your Apfelsprechel tale is very interesting. You and everybody can keep doing logs like this if you want. I had a great time reading it. I made some minor adjustments, but if you think I ruined something please let me know, and I'll chage things.

Here’s where we stand after Smiley’s turn:

Just a note : It would be great if someone founded a city on the strip sometime, to allow our navy to pass (which will be beneficial later on I gather).

btw, the log just came out that way, since I lost all my notepad records, when the game crashed on the last turn. I thought I might as well turn it into a short tale, since I couldn't remember exactly where and when things happened... :D

It's been 29h now, and we have no responses from Rymiss, so Gumby you may take your 15 turns.

Rymiss, if you get here before Gumby posts, and if you're willing to play it quick (within 4h), I think you can do it. However, if Gumby gets here first you'll be skipped.

A good turn for me pretty much.

1625AD- Rymisster rose to power by popular demand. Gems traded to Babylon for Spices. Incense traded to Russia for 20g (Per Turn).

1630AD- Indian Warrior & Settlar land near New Katzenstein. Not really a problem.

1635AD- Anarchy ended and the German Democracy is formed! Gems traded to England for 26g (Per Turn).

1640AD- Greece and Babylon sign Peace Treaty. 'We love the Chancellor day' celebrated in various cities.

1645AD- Bank built in Iron Spot and production now on University. Granary completed in Far North, production now on Aqueduct.

1650AD- Cathedral completed in Pggarpolis and production changed to Bank.

1655AD- Tokyo trained Musketman. Edo built Settler and is now building a Forbidden Palace. Production in Izumo switched to Aqueduct. Settler being sent to fill in gap between the cities Liberty Capital, Kagoshima and KANGsville.

1660AD- Colosseum completed in Berlin, production now on Shakespeare's Theater. English landed Spearman and Settler near the gap I plan to settle!

1665AD- Russia demands Territory Map and 87g. I refuse and they just insult me but didnt declare war. English settle right where they landed thanks to a blockade of workers stopping them from moving to where our Settler was heading. Metallurgy reasearched and we are now researching Military Tradition.

1670AD- I establish Embassies in Greece, India, Russia and with the Aztecs. Cathedral built in Moo Point, production changed to Bank. Rymmyland built in the gap. Production quickly set on Temple. Gems traded to Greece for 12g (Per Turn). Metallurgy traded to the Aztecs for World Map, 5g (Per Turn) and 15g.

1675AD- Babylons and the Aztecs sign Peace Treaty. Aztecs demand Territory Map and 64g. Refused and they declare war on us. Aztec Swordsman slaughtered by defending Knight. Marketplace built in Nagoya and production now on Granary. Our Knight kills Pikeman defending Zitlaltepec and captures it. Temple being produced in captured city. Knight attacks Umma, kills defending Spearman and captures the city! As usual production set on Temple.

1680AD- 2 Aztec Knights assault Fukushima and capture it  . Libary done in Incense Hill production now on Aqueduct.

1685AD- Babylon declare war on English. University in Nagasaki done, production now on Bank. Our Knight kills Aztec Knight creeping up on Umma. Another Knight kills Aztec Longbowman near Umma.

1690AD- Knights heading to recapture Fukushima.

1695AD- University built in Iron Spot, production now on Harbor. Marketplace in Nextrem completed and production changed to Aqueduct. Addition added to palace. Knight attacks Fukushima and died in combat. Second Knight attacks and wins against defending Aztec Knight capturing Fukushima! Production set to Temple.

Goals for next player: After taking the last Aztec city on Alenes (sp?) they wont really be a problem and they will sign a Peace Treaty easily. I also think we are too far behind in tech to win the game with a Space or Diplo victory, playing the game out to 2050AD may be the only way to go. Focus alot on Trade & Science.

When we get into relations for ending the German-Aztec war, we should press for as much as we can. I do think we have potential, albeit a small one, for a space victory. Hoping for a score victory would be senseless, unfortunately.

Before starting my turn I
Increased the price of luxuries to the English, Egyptians, Russian and Indians. Our cash flow jumped from 27/turn to 90/turn. Also, Military Tradition will take a turn instead of 2.

1700ad - Military Tradition researched. Physics next. Good news, we're technologically updated. The city of New Ashur was captured from the evil Aztecs.
1705ad - Belindaville completed the great project of Smitzer's Trading Company. The upgrading of the German defensive line started.
1710ad - Umma deposed our governor and flipped to the Babylonians.
1715ad - 4 Aztec caravels and 2 galley approach Alenes. Our cities are completly umprotected. Fortunately the Aztecs signed a Peace Treaty and paid 6gold/turn plus 12 gold in tribute. The Aztec also paid 22gold/turn for our fine gems. The Babs finished the Shakespere Theater. All production in Berlin lost.
1720ad - Aztec fleet retreats. Thanks God!!!
1735ad - Palace expansion.
1745ad - England ends Gems trade as they don't have money. Renewed Babilonians trade routes. Now we give 2 luxuries and receive 2 luxuries and 13gold/turn.
1750ad - Most of our defense is upgraded.
1760ad - Edo completed the Forbidden Palace.
1762ad - Finished the research of Theory of Gravity. After we research Magnetism, we'll switch ages and gain tech lead.
1768ad - Greek and Egyptians started Newton's College, but they won't beat us in this race. Magnetism will come in 2 turns.

We're crossing the transition phase every regent game has. When we pass the AI in technology and get the lead of the game (a bit late I would say). It took a long time to happen in this game, but I believe we can still win. The Histograph victory is only an option if we decide to destroy theBabylonians and Aztec fast. The victory path we're most likely to have is diplomatic, but we'll have to increase our research rate a lot and improve our reputation before we can think of it.

I've played 20 turns. From now on feel free to play between 10-20 turns. We have a lot of game ahead and you should play the amount of turns you feel comfortable with.

Here's our stabilished border and the Histografh.

My log is a bit confuse. It's 3am, and I'm still awake, so that's why.

1768 The lazy Ludwig von Bayern obtains power by a majority of vote from the german nobles, and sets out to bring Germany even further than his predecessors. Science and culture must prosper he proclaims. And another priority will most certainly be to contain those english villages on the german continent before they start demanding privileges at court.

1770 Germany enters a new advanced age, obtaining nationalism, and now researching medicine.

1774 Babylonians take Bath, on our continent, and they raze it! Babylon will be our enemy no.1 from now on. Longterm war preparations must start sometime, but somehow there's always a new exciting building project going on, so Ludwig decides to go cultural for some time yet.

1782 Starts settler in Edo to build city on the strip. Consider to build a couple of ships, but need more gold. Everything is going well. All cities are building libraries or universities or banks. We'll have medicine within 4 years.

1786 Medicine researched, starts sanitation project.
1788 Sold nationalism to the indians for good profits.

1792 Strip founded on the strip. ;)

1798 Ludwig lives to see the completion of Newtons University in Berlin, before he dies from an infection caused by the stinging of a winged insect...

1. Exactly when did we go to war with Babylon? No matter, we should now pit all the other nations against Babylon, with trades and such. I also suggest that, now that we have Nationality, we begin 'picking' on nations, by convincing all the nations to embargo one other nation, like Aztecland. Then we sign MPPs with everyone, and keep provoking Aztecland until they declare war...thus gaining the wrath of all other nations on the planet.

2. I'm giving Gumby until 9 PM EST to play the game before I do. After that, I'll grab it up.

Morten Blaabjerg
Jan 09, 2002, 04:04 PM

One of the lesser-known Presidents was President Smiley. He was a descendant of the long line of monarchs dating back to the founding of Smiley Falls. The family had a long history of shrewd negotiators, but none so shrewd as President Smiley during his reign (1800-1820). During this period of time, he managed to raise the national surplus from around 25 or so to a whopping 384! The nation's economy was booming like it never had before. Sadly, before he could invest the money into a powerful army or an enduring infrastructure, President Smiley died quietly in his sleep. He is survived by a nephew.

During my turn, the war between England and Babylon ended. I think we should take the time now to crush England, as they only have four cities, all easily within our reach. Remember, if we flatten England, we can use them as a stepping-stone to a higher score.

(I accidentally ended my last turn, so I had to save it at the next player's first turn. Sorry.)

OK, Let's see what King Gumby can achieve:

1820 AD - Getting some workers to work

1822 AD - Automating some settlers so they can build our railroadnetwork.

1824 AD - Industralization has been discovered! Researching Electricity. Getting all trained calavary to the border. We may need them for a future war.

1826 AD - Traded world maps with the aztecs to keep them friends.

1830 AD - Nothing special
