:crazyeyes DECEMBER 18th, 2001 -- Version 1.0

Here is my remake of Civ III's terrain graphics. So far I only have grassland irrigation done, but I'll keep posting future versions as I complete other terrains.

Beside's a case of insomnia, I thought Snoopy could use a little competition!

Here's a screenshot to see the irrigation:

Please give your comments...

Enjoy!

Ok, here is the file!!!

Okay, well if you're competing with Snoopy, how about doing something a lot of people asked for, but Snoopy never gave us.

How about some improved mountains (ie: grey not red) with just regular everday Civ3 grass...

Snoopy gave us grey and red mountains with his neon green grass.....

I (and a lot of others) would really just like grey mountains with the default grass!!!!

I wouldn't mind seeing mountains with snow at the base. My cool ice planet doesn't look quite right.

Has this already been done?

Hard to improve on Snoopy, but you may have done it for this tile. I'll try it out tonight. Thanks!

I must say, those irrigation looks great!! :D

Would road and rail ruin the look??

Excellent irrigation! I'm completely impressed (for what THAT'S worth :) ):goodjob:

Thanks!

I tried to set the buildings out of the way of roads, but it's not completely possible. So roads and rail will go through the buildings ... blah.

Anyways ... I'll do plains irrigation and desert irrigation next. My idea for plains is less green crops and more wheat/barley crops. Desert ... sparse green and wheat crops.

Wolfshanze...snoopy did give a grey mountains ONLY option...it is downloadable from www.apolyton.com in the civ3 files section...I'm sending you a PM to make sre you know about this.

Wow, that's great to hear... I did love Snoopys Grey mountains, but was disheartened when he reverted back to half-and-half red mountains and that neon grass of his.

Is the "all-grey" mountains using the "default" grass, or is it his neon-green grass?

I'm not surprised it being on Apolyton... I usually hang out there more than here, but since I'm defending our country in Saudi Arabia right now, 95% of the internet is blocked to me... about the only thing I can get is a news site or two, and, oddly-enough, Civ Fanatics... any tech, game, entertainment site is blocked out, including Apolyton... oddly enough, Civ Fanatics, isn't... weird, but I'll live with it until I return stateside.

I was thinking of doing multiple colors in the mountain tiles... some grey, some red ... for example: in a single mountain tile you'll see multiple rock types forming the mountain ... is all grey prefered?

About the grass. Here is the thing. I can change the color of the grass to be more green with photoshop. The easiest way to do that is to change the color balance by adding more blue, green, and cyan ... but!!! by doing that I effectively alter the entire color table for the file and will have to change the color balance in every other single terrain graphic file because they are all linked in one way or another. Example: change the grassland you have to change the grassland/plains border tiles ... change those you have to change the plains ... change those you have to change the plains coast lines .. change the coast lines you have to change the coastal water...etc...

Now the other way to change the grassland to green is much more tedious ... and that is to go into the color table and change each individual 100 or so yellow-green color to blueish green colors. Blah...

So... I'm not planning on doing much to grassland colors quite yet.

I will be doing the other irrigations, forest and jungle, and mountains. Then I want to get back to work on a mod...

By the way, if anyone wants to collaborate with me on developing some MODs or maps etc.. let me know...

Zeb

Best wishes to you in Saudi Arabia

Zeb,

if you want to change a part of the graphics without redoing the whole palette, it may be that you will find this trick useful. I do not know what format the civ graphics are in, but it may be that they have an ordered palette that will make this save time.

Let's see... if the image mode is indexed (image --> mode --> indexed), then you can access the colours palette using image --> mode --> color table. There, you will be presented with all colours used by the image - and it may be that colour ranges are next to each other (ie all greens together, starting from the darkest downto the brightest hues). If you hold down shift, click on the first colour of the range, and then on the last, you can then select these two base values and have photoshop extrapolate all values in between. Thus, you would only need about 5 - 15 colour selections to modify the entire set.

I do not know if you will find this useful, but i have been surpirsed at how few people use the indexed color table to produce results. This can also be applied to any grayscale image to make it catch fire, but I guess that goes off to a totally different forum...

Good work! Keep it up!

Ahh thanks ... the table has the colors semi mixed up ... I believe sorted by usage ... I couldn't find a way to resort the colors based on hue... the help file says you can, but it shows a completely different view of the color table panel. But, I think I can use this to change the greens... at least better than changing one color at a time!

I learned about indexed color, believe it or not, by fiddling with sprites in Bungie's Marathon game. They used indexed color to change the color of the clothing of a sprite... this was done by the game exchanging color table files with a single graphic... I thought that was cool!

Thanks,

Zeb

Keep up the good work!! :goodjob: Its a huge improvement.

They actually look ok on other terrains too, and they make your lands look rich and cultivated, like they should. Look good with the other graphics too.

Now, I'd like to see someone have a go at the roads... ;)

RogueNine
Dec 21, 2001, 08:45 AM
Yah, it would be great to see roads that evolve over time. Seems kind of wierd to have dirt roads when your civ is using cars. Perhaps railroads can be made to look like highways instead? Just like in SimCity, its wierd to have all railroads and no roads anywhere.

Sorry I haven't been able to update my files lately. I'm in search of a job at the moment and it has almost all of my attention.

Anyone here from the San Francisco Bay Area and need a highly skilled Visual Basic/SQL Server programmer with a dab of C++ skills?

As soon as I get some free time here ... I'll get back to these graphics.

Zeb, are you looking for a C++ games programming job over the internet? I am currently looking for c++ programmers with some experience in games design to build a strategy game for a spain-based company. Could be good money, depending on your experience. Send me a CV at stelios.kourakis@iua.upf.es if you're interested. You, and any other strategy fan & programmer who reads this.

I know this forum is a rather strange place to do some recruiting, but I am working on this game that has several similarities with the civ ideas, and I am always interested in people who do quality work (like Zeb's mod). Sometimes the best opportunities crop up in the unlikeliest places:D

He really doesn't have to do additional work unless he wants to make irrigation tiles for each terrain (makes sense). Otherwise, to have the irrigation tiles on your other terrain just make copies of the original irrigation, backup the other irrigation files, and rename the copies the names of the old irrigation files. I would slap an image but I don't know how to print screen.

Someone at Apolyton by the name of Willem has made some irrigation tile for Plains and Desert base on Zeb's graphic by changing the color and tone of the tiles.

And yesterday someone has requested for them to be posted here so here it is. ;)

Corrupted zip file removed. Get the working zip file from below.

Looks like you are right. Apolyton's attachment is acting up again. I tried downloading it for almost 10 times and the file still can't be opened.

No matter. I have a working copy of the zip on my office computer and I will post it in about 6 hours time when I get back to office tomorrow morning. :D

Wow!!

You folks have given some really great positive feedback. I'm still in search of a job here. It is really unbelievable how fast the economy changed in California.

I may get back to modifying some of these tiles soon. My planned modifications was to alter the plains and desert files followed by redoing the forest and jungle tiles. I really can't stand the forest and jungle files. In my opinion they look nearly identical and are hard to distinguish.

Just wanted to compliment Zeb on the art.

I've tried to download the file about ten different times, but to no avail -- my system always just pops up the .php file, not any actual .zip file. Any help?

The reason I'm asking, by the way, is that I'd really like to get Zeb's terrain mods. They look beautiful.

Why thank you! Although I didn't do very much, just played with the hue and saturation levels. Zeb deserves all the credit here. I didn't have much luck with the Desert I'm afraid, the Magenta background kept coming through. So anytime you get insomnia Zeb, I'm eagerly awaiting some Desert irrigation.

BTW, the Apolyton server was maxed again, so I figured I'd drop in here. Nice to meet you folks:) Oh yeah, if anyone is having a problem with the file just let me know and I'll zip it and upload it for you.

Will putting this file into the Terrain folder overwrite ALL existing files in that folder? I'm going to install Sn00py's terrain mod and I'm wondering if I can use both of these together.

If you are going to use both of them together, you are going to have to look at each file from both people and see which one's you want to use because whichever one you install second will overwrite the first.

I like this grafic very much, but I don't like the desert irrigation. So I've modified the grassland irrígation a little bit and make so my own desert irrigation.

Here is an example:
http://www.ccj39.de/irri.jpg

Download:
irri_des.zip (http://www.ccj39.de/irri_des.zip)
(I don't know why, but if you want to download this file, then you should download the irri_des.htm which came instead of the zip-file and open it. Then this htm-file will allow you to download the correct zip-archiv)

DO NOT BUMP!
This is one of the worst bumps I have ever seen. Please do not bump. If you don't know what it is -
Bumping, v. - To revive an old thread with no useful information or good reason. i.e. - Saying "Great job!" on a thread that is over two years old.

Please don't bump unless you have a question or something helpful to add.

Sorry to be rude, but it gets annoying.

BTW, Welcome to Civfanatics! I hope you like it here, you'll be fine as long as you don't break the rules or annoy certain people.
