Thus far, we have received multiple selections for our list of civs to be submitted to the admins. Here they are so far:

1. Iroquois
2. Sumeria
3. Carthage

and

1. Iroquois
2. Celts
3. Persia
4. Vikings
5. Sumeria

Also, Maya have been mentioned as a possible first choice. I think we should carry on the discussion here and decide which it should be.

The map will probably be continental, this seems to be the most popular one.
I think naval power will be important, so my vote goes to a seafaring civ.
Dutch would be agri, but they aren`t on the list.
Of those listed, I`d like
Vikings and Cartaginians, in that order.

As a non seafaring civ, I`d like Maya.

The second list represents my prefs. Iroquois and Persia are probably the most versatile civs of all, with good traits and cheap and strong UU's. Vikings are great if you can survive long enough to get to invention.

Maya have nice traits but a terrible UU. Not my first choice.

We had terrible results with the Maya in the ISDG -- but that might also have been due to the terrible starting position. If the game were certain to last long enough for the UU to matter, I'd take the Vikings with the amphibious 'zerks.

I think it is wrong to choose civs without knowing landform, so unless there are votes for random in the UN vote I'll go suggest this to the admins.

Agriculture is a necessary trait no matter what. Bonus food and cheap granaries - what more could a civver want in a PBEM? With a well-placed city early on in the game, we can start up a settler/worker factory that can rapidly provide us with necessary extra cities and workers for infrastruture.

A strong UU isn't so important to me. We probably should avoid an early UU, as I sincerely doubt that we'll be doing any early attacking, nor that we will be attacked early on (if prior evidence is any clue, as we've certainly had the option to make crippling early attacks - remember that Indian worker we could have captured at the beginning of the DG6 game, and we've never even considered something like that in the course of the SP game).

For these reasons, I like the Iroquois (mounted archer is decent, but not extremely early), as well as the Dutch (swiss mercenary, need I say more?). I don't particularly like the Maya, as it's a weak UU, and we probably can't farm for workers with them too easily.

I believe they took out half-priced granaries for agricultural during the beta test.

Cheap granaries, are you sure? I thought it was aqueducts...

You're right, sorry about that. Mistake aside, the extra food that comes with Agriculture (one in the city center, and an extra for irrigated desert) is still pretty potent.

We could go Maya and just never choose to build the UU. At least not till its time for a GA.

Let me amend that a bit. If goody huts are IN I wouldnt mind using the Inca for a chance to score early techs.

So: do we somehow vote on this?

Can we agree on Iroquois as a first choice? It seems to be what the majority of people are leaning towards.

As for the others, I'm really not sure. Just as an idea, maybe we could have Dutch second, Vikings third, and Maya fourth (we won't need a fifth choice as there are only 4 civs in the game).

I would put vikings second and dutch third on the principle of taking the improved unit on offense instead of defense -- but only if we're not on pangaea. Seafaring is worse than useless when you don't have water barriers, at least as far as I can tell. Others might have more information of course.

Seafaring is pretty useless in Pangea, awesome in Arpegio, and 'balanced' in continents. I guess it all depends on what landform we are gonna use whether the Dutch are worthwhile or not.

It looks like we're going to be on a continents map (2 of 4 teams have voted continents already, and our poll is leaning that way). Given that, should we choose Iroquois, Vikings, Dutch, Maya or some other list? We only have a matter of hours to make this decision. I plan to cast a civ list at midnight my time (5:00 GMT, 1:59 before the deadline).

I thought it would be continents.
So my vote remains unchanged: Dutch > vikings > maya > all the rest

It has been decided to be a continents map.

It seems that SGL is on. For that reason we need scientific civ. My list stands
1. Sumeria. 2. Persia 3. Iroquois 4. Celts 5. Dutch

I have no idea how to score these results, but I think it's something along the lines of:

1. Iroquois
2. Dutch
3. Vikings
4. Persia

with Celts and Maya coming close to making it on the list. Does this sound accurate? The list will be sent in about an hour.

edit: list sent

And we were given the Iroquois!
