View Full Version : team chat room? other chat method?
DaveShack Jul 25, 2005, 08:08 PM Do we want to use some kind of chat, in particular during game play? I heard the ISDG team used MSN but don't know if that was individual to individual windows or something where everyone who wanted to be there was on the same window.
I would prefer an open chat format vs. having individual windows, but am not particular about what kind of connection to use. Not that we would want the chat itself to be open of course. If we use IRC then we'd want a password protected secret room, not sure how that is done on other services.
Bootstoots Jul 25, 2005, 08:20 PM I think an IRC channel (secret and password-protected) would make the most sense for us to use.
RegentMan Jul 26, 2005, 12:38 AM I've had three-way chats on MSN, but I'm not sure if anything higher's allowed.
gert-janl Jul 26, 2005, 02:28 AM At the ISDG we didnīt use MSN that much. Only some diplomatic talks were via MSN. IRC would do the trick for us, I agree.
Nobody Jul 26, 2005, 05:13 PM I like MSN as i dont really know how to use IRC. Maybe if ambassordor and foreign leaders exchanged MSN (email addys) so they could chat

I think the suggestion was to use IRC for internal chats about playing the save, and whatever other method is mutually agreeable with the other team for diplomacy.
As for how to use IRC, we can have a how-to posted. One of us who is experienced can create the room, and from your point of view all you really need to do is connect to it via a client. I'm not sure if the java client at the bottom of the forum pages can handle password protected rooms, but there are lots of clients out there. I use mIRC for example.
Kiech Jul 26, 2005, 10:10 PM IRC is easy, its just a chat room. You use MIRC or Trillian or some other program to get to the chat room, and talk. The Admin of the room will be whoever is online 24/7 and can keep the room going.
Octavian X Jul 26, 2005, 11:44 PM An IRC room is no problem. I can easily set one up and write a quick how-to on joining. We just need to decide on a name and password, and I can do the rest.
For what it's worth, using MSN one can have a conversation with multiple people in one window.
Nobody Jul 27, 2005, 01:16 AM yes and msn makes a copy of the chat in your received files area, and we can send those shake things create agreements (shake on it)

mIRC also lets you save the chat in a log directory. :p
There is no reason some people can't use MSN where others use IRC and still others just use the forum, as long as we're all talking. :D
Kiech Jul 27, 2005, 12:57 PM mIRC is better, it doesn't hog up your memory. Octavian, if you have the means, please just go ahead and set up a room for us. Set up whoever our elected officals are as admins, and yourself.
