View Full Version : Strange info on Civ 4 being 2D!
V. Soma Jul 28, 2005, 03:12 AM On a Hungarian site I read a preview on Civ 4:
http://www.hcgamer.hu/gamer/index.php?p=5&c=12331
it says:
"Marad a két dimenzió, a Firaxis nem engedett a csábításnak, s jól tudták, hogy a harmadik tengely bevezetése itt csak sima parasztvakítás (és gepigénynövelés) lenne."
Er... you don't speak this most beautiful language? :)
Ok, in English it goes like this:
"Two dimensions reamian, Firaxis did not yield to temptation, they knew it well that the introduction of the third axis here would be no more than "blinding eye-candy" and an increase in system requirement."
Whaaaat???
I wrote a mail to the author so to clarify on the source of this 2D-info...
We'll see...
Ranbir Jul 28, 2005, 06:30 AM You know, I've seen the world map rotate, but I haven't seen it change angle...for us to see something from a different angle.
Regardless, the way the earth now spins and stuff, it's clearly 3D. I think I understand what he's trying to say though.
V. Soma Jul 28, 2005, 06:33 AM in the first video, that with Soren Johnson atE3, we could see the view not only rotated but also tilted, from birs's view to top-view and back, if I am correct...

Hence, Civ IV is 3D.
V. Soma Jul 28, 2005, 07:40 AM I also got to this conlusion - I sent the URl of the video to the author of the article - now waiting for response... :)

josephstalin Jul 28, 2005, 08:57 AM Civ 4 is going to be 3D. Not english language sites ussually screws up. For example russian civru.com says, that each civilization is going to have 2 leaders (which is obviously not true for beggining), there is no information about tech tree, unit promotions, and religion. Sad...
ew0054 Jul 30, 2005, 12:42 PM I think what he means is that the gameplay will still be 2D, on a flat tile-based map. There won't be a "sky layer" or an "undersea layer", like in CivII. It would be awesome if they could implement something like that though.
henry k c Jul 30, 2005, 05:31 PM Ok, I think you:
1. mistranslated the hungarian site
2. misinterperated the hungarian site
rhialto Jul 30, 2005, 05:43 PM Until they make holographic projector monitors, the game will remain 2D.

I don't remember an undersea layer in Civ II. Maybe you're thinking of Civilization:Call to Power or Alpha Centauri?
Meleager Jul 30, 2005, 11:36 PM *Review reveals that fraxis will sell civ3 in europe under the civ4 banner with some religions included*
Probobly just a stuff up. I wonder if the report is based on an intervew or just what the author has heard around the place. But it is DEFINITALY 3d.
Jaybe Jul 31, 2005, 12:13 PM I don't remember an undersea layer in Civ II. Maybe you're thinking of Civilization:Call to Power or Alpha Centauri?
In this context, "undersea layer" refers to submarines capable of being at the same location as surface ships of another civ, NOT undersea cities. Civ3 developed problems with this, creating unintended wars.
Now, it is appreciated that such bugs were not fixed because Firaxis had diverted resources to civ4.
Blade Runner Jul 31, 2005, 04:57 PM I followed the link, read the article (beeing Hungarian is an advantage :D ) and V. Soma was right, the author of the article either didnt do his homework or seriously misunderstand some graphics related information about CIV IV. He very clearly stated: the game will be 2D, which is comlettely against all previous information (i.e. Firaxis using gamebryo 3D engine, Sorensen clearly stated CIV IV will be 3D, etc.) Hopefully the author will correct sooner than later his mistake, so this false information will be changed.

Are you a Hungarian, too? :)
(de ezt akár magyarul is kérdezhettem volna... :))

Blade Runner Aug 01, 2005, 08:21 AM Are you a Hungarian, too? :)
Igen. :)
(de ezt akár magyarul is kérdezhettem volna... :))
Yes, but it is better to keep the conversation in English. So anyone will understand it. :D

My name is originally Hungarian, does that count?

It is also the forum rule. ;)
We don't mind the occasional bit in non-English, but they should always be translated.
777 Aug 01, 2005, 11:21 AM I hope this is:
A: Bullcrap
B: Blabbertalk
C: Very un-reliable source of info
I want that God damned 3D civ! It's too interesting Civ to miss it.
CornMaster Aug 01, 2005, 02:23 PM Until they make holographic projector monitors, the game will remain 2D.
Perfectly put. :)
CyberChrist Aug 01, 2005, 09:24 PM I don't remember an undersea layer in Civ II. Maybe you're thinking of Civilization:Call to Power or Alpha Centauri?Civilization 2: Test of Time allowed scenarios to have 4 linked maps each with it's own distinctive terrain graphics and units flagged to do so could travel between maps and there was even a terrain improvement that would allow units flagged to use it to travel to other maps once build on map. This allowed for many interesting possiblities, such have 1 for normal earth, 1 undersea/-ground, 1 air/high mountains and one for orbital space (just examples - could include a layer for solar system or even 1-3 for other planets).
I personally was very dispappointed to see they abandoned this idea totally in Civ3 and apparently haven't reintroduced it in Civ4 either, but at least in Civ3 it was possibly due to the engine being slow enough as it was with handling the contents of just 1 map :mischief: (it has to be said that Civ2:ToT could become very slow on multi map scenarios).
Reintroducing and improving this concept/idea would IMHO have added a lot more to the game than any eyecandy in 3D will ever do, but oh well - things are as they are :p .
V. Soma Aug 02, 2005, 01:17 AM Hi, to all!
The author of the article I quoted from in the opening post wrote me a mail in which he apologizes for the mistake - now he admits that Civ IV will be 3D and will correct the article accordingly...
