Imagine you have Civilization IV installed in your PC and you're eager to play your first ever Civ IV game:

1. Supposing the difficulty levels remain the same as in C3C (eight), what level would you play at ? Would you play at the same difficulty level you normally play on C3C or slightly lower ? Or higher :crazyeye: ?
2. What Civ will you choose to play with for the first time ?
3. What type of game would you pursue: builder or warmonger ?
4. What type of map setting will you choose ?
5. How many AI rivals ?
6. How long do you think it'll take you to post at CFC your first impressions/critics/strategies on the game ?

Salutations Drakan,

1. A low level--Chieftain perhaps.

2. I would either be English or a custom Civilization.

3. A builder perhaps.

4. Temperate map however varied with some mountains and deserts, it would have to be large!

5. Maximum AI rivals, I wanna meet as many Civilizations as possible.

6. Quite soon I'd say but I wouldn't be on the internet most of the time I would be playing the game!

Peace be upon you~

1 - easiest level first, to get to grips with how the new game works. I wouldn't want to spend my first game getting trashed by the AI!

2 - Not a clue, I mgiht just put random on!

3 - See how it plays out

4 - Biggest!

5 - As many as possiable!

6 - about 3 seconds

1. Supposing the difficulty levels remain the same as in C3C (eight), what level would you play at ? Would you play at the same difficulty level you normally play on C3C or slightly lower ? Or higher ? Probably an easy level - just to get to grips with the game.

2. What Civ will you choose to play with for the first time ? Arabs.

3. What type of game would you pursue: builder or warmonger ? Builder probably, as i figure out how to play.

4. What type of map setting will you choose ? Standard i guess.

5. How many AI rivals ? A good 4 or 5

6. How long do you think it'll take you to post at CFC your first impressions/critics/strategies on the game ? A couple of days of casual playing perhaps.

Interesting thread!

1. Chieftain, so i can get a chance to understand the changes without too much hassle from the ai

2. Not sure, maybe the greeks

3. A bit of both, i'd want to see how the dynamics worked for both

4. Large with the standard climate, land mass ect.

5. Maximum, again to get a feel of the dynamics of diplomacy ect.

6. When i felt i knew enough about the game to say something informed and worthwhile

1. One of the low levels to begin with -- Chieftan or Warlord. The game may be familiar, but the new system can still bite you in the rear.
2. Either the Aztecs or the Romans, most likely.
3. Good question. Depends on the set up. In Civ 3, I consistantly played builder games, attempting to monopolize strategic resources. Civ 1 and Civ 2 were more geared for Warmonger, and that's the way I played them (I loved nuking the Indian Mongol alliances in Civ 1). I'd like to see Civ 4 shift a bit towards the old warmonger style (without losing the value of strategic resources).
4. The largest map available. 5 Billion Years as either Archipelago (sp?) or Continents. A cold or temperate world. Wish there was a setting for the violence of the weather and the tectonics.
5. If possible, all 18.
6. Days, unless something's really off in gameplay -- though I might lurk in between sessions to see others' opinions.

1. Probably a bit lower, say at warlod (or whatever the second to bottom one is) to start at, until I get a feel for it...

2. I've been eyeing the mongols under Kublai Kahn. Military might and culture advantages seem like a recipe for getting the biggest chunck of the map, along with a fast moving unit like the keshik (at least I assume it'll be...)

3. Half and Half! Fight early on, eliminate your neighbors, then make sure you stay ahead in science and $ by building up your infrastructure!

4. Huge! I need room!

5. As many as I can...I like the compexity of many rivals...

6. about an hour...after I lose horribly and need a place to vent....

1. Supposing the difficulty levels remain the same as in C3C (eight), what level would you play at ? Would you play at the same difficulty level you normally play on C3C or slightly lower ? Or higher ?
Regent. I like a fair game.

2. What Civ will you choose to play with for the first time ?
Rome. (Civilization attributes: Off)

3. What type of game would you pursue: builder or warmonger ?
I would most likely play rather discrete, though it comes natural for me to be very expansive.

4. What type of map setting will you choose ?
Game speed: Norma
Map size: Large
Not sure what other settings that I can alter, but landscape and such will just be the average.

5. How many AI rivals ?
7.

6. How long do you think it'll take you to post at CFC your first impressions/critics/strategies on the game ?
A few days. Though only if my rants/praise/strategies seem appropriate to post... I am sure some guys will be pretty damn quick to post

1. Probably Regent.
2. France
3. I'll do an agressive builder game, launching wars of opportunity where it looks like I can fight a short war (and win).
4. Continents
5. 8 AIs.
6. I'll be posting reviews within a couple days of the game's release.

1. The easiest level 1st, and then jump onto multiplayer since they say thats where they started
Also I guess there is some type of tutorial. I will do that.
2. random
3. I like to play builder, but build on 66% of the land
4. Random
5. All of them
6. Halfway through the game

Also probably i will wish i hadnt read most of the threads here so that I'm not analyzing the AI's every move and thinking about capacity points.

religion will be weird and fun

3. I'll be building
4. Archapelago HUGE size

1) Lowest Possible.
2) Probably China. I'm undecided here; I'll look through their civilopedia first.
3) Builder. Just to see how things are done and to get the basic feel.
4) The defaults.
5) The defaults.
6) Maybe a day or two?

6. I'm going to post a story about it at GCF.

YAY!

1. Chieftain.
2. Probably Rome, as they're generally a solid choice. This is not definite though.
3. I'm not sure. Depends on the map, and how the game ends up playing out. Probably builder though.
4. The standard default ones.
5. The default number.
6. I'm going to post about it at GCF as soon as I start playing.

1. Second lowest, Maybe the lowest would be too easy, and I don't want to open all the christmas presents at once.
2. Probably greeks.
3. Builder, rather than Warmonger, I'll probably focus on building highly speciallized cities and aim for those great people and see how cool their features are.
4. Large map, but no the largest.
5. Default rivals, i suppose 7?
6. That's the trickiest one, I remember I played my first CIV III games without reading the manual and I was quite dissapointed. I have never played Civ II, my previous experience was only SMAC, so for a while I stopped playing Civ III and I went on playing SMAC, because I thought SMAC was much better, but then, one day, I switch back to Civ III and I hardly ever played SMAC again. So, I won't take anybody's first impressions into account. A game of this complexity needs to be played for a while before judging it.

Edit: and I suppose that the quickest ones to submitt reports and strategies will be the beta testers, It seems some habituals are missing from this site lately, Sir Perlb, Moonsinger, and the other top guys are going to be very quick and probably accurate in their reports. (Maybe some reports are already written)

1. Monarch or Emperor. Just a bit below what I play at normally.
2. I'd have to see, but either Mali or one of the civs with 2 leaders.
3. I'll probably build a lot of culture in 1 city (20K), and conquer the world with the rest. I'd win one of those.
4. Depends on the map sizes, but since I think they are smaller, either the largest or second largest. Pretty much normal settings (4 billion, 70% continents, temperate, etc).
5. The default for the map size.
6. Probably when I finish the game (2 AM on November 16th, after doing nothing but Civ IV for several hours ;) )

Probably regent.

What Civ will you choose to play with for the first time ?
I don't know. I'll probably look at traits and such.

What type of game would you pursue: builder or warmonger ?
Most likely builder with a war or two. I'm sure the penalty for too big of an empire will hit me often as my Civ III settling mode kicks in!

What type of map setting will you choose ?
Continents with 80% water.

How many AI rivals ?
The maximum I can.

How long do you think it'll take you to post at CFC your first impressions/critics/strategies on the game ?
I probably will read threads and reply when I can. I'm not looking forward to reading hundreds of "My Civ IV Impressions" threads, though!

1. Chieftain or Monarch
2. Incas maybe (If they don't have the creepy chasqui scout) Rome or Louis XIV France.
3. Builder... of units. I want to test the new cultural system and the new war style.
4. As bigger as posible. Averege Settings.
5. 7 or 9. I wanna see how "big" is Huge map size.
6. As soon I finish my first game, or read the whole civlopedia. Whatever cames first.

Imagine you have Civilization IV installed in your PC and you're eager to play your first ever Civ IV game

First, I dim the lighting. Naturally, I sprinkle some rose petals around the floor, on my chair, and on the desk. I light some faintly scented candles, perhaps lavender, placing them artfully in various places around the room. I put on some soft music, perhaps some early Coltrane, maybe a little Marvin Gaye. I do a short yoga workout to warm up and loosen my muscles. Then I take a brief, hot shower, shave with a new razor, and put on my crisply ironed clothes. Finally, as the moment draws near, I sit on the floor in a lotus position and meditate. With a calm spirit and an open mind, I am finally ready.

1. After reading the manual (yes, I am such a weirdo :crazyeye: ), I'll probablly start a game at level 6 (demigod in Conquests). I like a challenge.
2. Hmm, difficult one. I'll probably look at the advantages of each and make an educated guess what suits my playing style best. Second game will be random.
3. Somewhere in between. I'm not a rusher and like to build a strong economy, but if I think I can crush my neighbour then I will (if it offers an advantage).
4. Everything normal. Normal warmth, normal humidity, not too many barbarians, etc. My second game will be random, but in my first game, I want to experience what is 'normal' in this new game. Large but not huge map.
5. Maximum advised number for that map size.
6. If I have something interesting to say (according to myself ;) ) that could be after my first session of Civ IV.

I'll be drinking a glass of beer and eating salty sunflower seeds. I will have bought my wife a months' worth of gossip mags so she leaves me alone for 3-4 hours that first day.

1. Supposing the difficulty levels remain the same as in C3C (eight), what level would you play at ? Would you play at the same difficulty level you normally play on C3C or slightly lower ? Or higher ?

Emperor, a few levels below. Don't feel like getting trashed -too badly- in my first game. :p

2. What Civ will you choose to play with for the first time ?

Mali cause they are new.

3. What type of game would you pursue: builder or warmonger ?

Builder, to get to know how things work.

4. What type of map setting will you choose ?

Huge pangaea to allow max AIs

5. How many AI rivals ?

The max allowed so I can see the changes, UUs and flavour units.

6. How long do you think it'll take you to post at CFC your first impressions/critics/strategies on the game ?

I'd say a day. I'm such a civ junkie. :D

I would buy movie tickets for everyone in the house to leave. I would turn the lights off. Turn the sound to max and let Civ IV take center stage.

1. Supposing the difficulty levels remain the same as in C3C (eight), what level would you play at ? Would you play at the same difficulty level you normally play on C3C or slightly lower ? Or higher ?

I would go easy, just to feel good about starting and not being all stressed about getting pushed around.

2. What Civ will you choose to play with for the first time ?
If my name does not hint... The Persians, i am fanicanted and deeply intrigued by Persian history so my first intent would be to play out the Persians and check historical acurecies.

3. What type of game would you pursue: builder or warmonger ?
Builder, i want to see all the new functions of the game, the civics, religons, cities. THe fighting part never changes, so i am guessing that will take minimum time to adjust.

4. What type of map setting will you choose ?
Smallest with largest number of poeple possible so i can get to the dynamics of the deplomacy and so on. Pangea, wet and warm tropical style.

5. How many AI rivals ?
max for the smallest map

6. How long do you think it'll take you to post at CFC your first impressions/critics/strategies on the game ?

1.) Cheiftain (It's the only level I can win at!)
2.) American
3.) Builder
4.) I make my map depending on the weather and time of day:

Time of day determines age: Morning: 3 billion, Afternoon: 4 billion, Evening: 5 billion
Outside Temperature determines temperature: Cool (winter), Temperate (spring, autumn), Warm (late spring, summer)
Outside Humidity determines Climate: Arid (dry heat), Normal (normal days), Wet (very humid or raining)

I know it's weird but it just feels right

Smaller sized map to start (don't know how large maps will hold up my my machine)

5.) As many AI's I can get stuffed in there!
6.) The following weekend after I play!

My first game will be Epic 1 from Realms Beyond Civilization. That way I can compare my play with others. I probably will stay away from CFC for awhile so I can enjoy the game without being tempted to copy the killer strategy someone will come up with after 1 week.

Ooh, good question. Probably India as Ashoka.

3. What type of game would you pursue: builder or warmonger ?

Builder with a few wars thrown in for experience.

4. What type of map setting will you choose ?

Continents, maximum water level.

5. How many AI rivals ?

Maximum.
