Can anyone recommend for me some Unique Units from around the 1300-1400s? The nations are Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, and it can't be a Corsair or Chebec, they all get access to those.

R8XFT Aug 07, 2005, 12:16 AM Here's some Arabian Riders from Tunisia: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/ArabianRiders.jpg Left Aug 07, 2005, 12:43 AM Thanks for the pic. Also does anyone know about Granada from that period? What would be a good UU for them? ArneoKerdarun Aug 07, 2005, 12:06 PM During the XIVth century, al-Andalus is no more a military powerful state: the Almoravid and Almohad period have made it rely on Berber armies from Maghreb to fight the christians. From 1228 to 1237, a huge Andalusi revolt against Almohad domination of the muslim part of the peninsula has ended by the division of Andalusis in small and independant Taïfas, which made it easier for Castillans to advance the "reconquest". The most powerful andalusi state is now Granada (and until 1492) where Nasrid Amira can at least defend a small part of Peninsula : the defense is simplified by the relief and the control of Granada, Malaga and Almeria "lock" the land. How Granada survives to its powerful christian neighboors ? Difficult lands to invade, through diplomacy : Castilla prefers taking tribute from Granada than paying big amount to prepare its invasion, plus, now that al-Andalus is little threat, christians are not united anymore ; there are rivalties between Castillans and Aragonese ; and at last, the threat of a massive Berber help sent to Granada. Granada UU ? There are two possibilities: _The excellent Berber light cavalry has played a great role during the XIVth century, sometimes helping Nasrids. They were very fast, equipped with light and very handy weaponry (especially the "daraqa", a small leather shield). Their style of horse-riding "a la gineta", with high stirrups and legs slighty bent. The Castillans will hire some of them ("zenetes" regiments [not sure of how to spell it in english]), and later copy the shield for their own cavalry. _After Almohad period, there are no real "muslim UU" possible in al-Andalus. The old Djund (muslim footmen army) has quite disappeared, and the Taïfas' period chased most of the Berber (who can only be seen as "special help"). The elite units of the army were foreigners. The saqâliba (slaves) were europeans bought when they were young and trained as servitor of the state, in administration and army. They were also hiring european mercenaries. Left Aug 07, 2005, 08:58 PM Wow, thanks Arneo. I think I'll go with the Saqaliba for Granada. I found a good unit for Algeria and Morocco. Now Tunisia is going to be difficult  R8XFT Aug 07, 2005, 10:18 PM Tunisia is going to be difficult  Perhaps you could rename the Ansar Warrior, using that as the Tunisian Rider? Left Aug 08, 2005, 02:11 AM I may have to do that, It was going to be available to all the Civs, but It wouldn't be a huge loss to make it a UU. ArneoKerdarun Aug 08, 2005, 10:25 AM You're welcome Left. If your scen ends near 1400, I understand it's hard to find good UUs... all the states of Maghreb were Berber in this period, with more or less arabic populations (the most "arabised" places were Tunisia and Granada). So Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia had all a good light cavalry. I saw you don't want to use a corsair/chebec as UU, well perhaps it would be a good UU for Algeria though, they were the most turned upon piracy. I'm not sure Tunisia had mediterranean pirates, they were really rich merchants, and preferred real armies because they were threatened by Norman Sicily. Left Aug 08, 2005, 11:26 AM I have a land unit pirate as the Algerian UU, thanks though. |
