The Name of Things

Greeting Citizens of Fanatikos! It is only minutes after our founding and something has already come up! Our goal is not only to provide you with information of in-game activities but also to inform you of the behind-the-scenes work. As Manager and Editor of The Informant I give you, The Name of Things

Already before the game has started our officals are at work: Choosing what to name things. Naming things? Yes naming things is the heated debate right now. With the elections coming to a close yesterday a second layer of decisions has begun. We have chosen our civilization name, Fanatikos, we have chosen what to name our officals, the almighty President and his\her Ministers so what's there to name?

Naming the Cities

Daveshack, the governer of our future capital is hosting open suggestions for the title of his city. Some suggestions were:

Athens (Stuck_As_A_Mac)
Alpha (Stuck_As_A_Mac)
Kepsalaio (Chieftess)
Priapos (Provolution)
Alphabeta (RegentMan)
Olympus (Furiey, DaveShack)
Usura (Giio)
Limpopororisstolisbenasti (Civlord)

The Governers Greekguy and Stuck_as_a_Mac have also posted thread of the same nature. The Governers DaveShack and greekguy have not chosen a city name. Stuck_as_a_Mac have support the name "Styx" for a riverside city but has not decided on a landlocked city. These are the threads:

DaveShacks Thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=125727)

Stuck_As_A_Macs thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=125604)

Greekguys thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=125670)

Ministers or Consuls?

Greekguy, Governer of city 3 (undecided city name, Citizens posting suggestions), has posted a thread requesting the changes of the names of the government officials to Consuls instead of Ministers, President to High Consul and Governers to City Senators. The thread is below:

Demo Game VII has begun! Our officials are still at work but it has BEGUN! More heated debates can now begin with new possibilities. There are a series of threads and operations that the reader might find useful in helping the betterment of Fanatikos:

The Screenshot Thread: This thread will provide maps which can be usefull for everybody. The Screenshot thread is located Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=124085)

Operation One: The Warrior Endeavor: With the creation of Demo Game VII there is already a few discussions. This is one of them. Fanatikos Defense Minister vikingruler has posted this thread for some public opinion: Where do we move our first unit? It has been decided it will be a warrior and used for scouting. Where would you move it? Post your suggestions Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=125994)

Where to found Olympus?: Governer of absolutely-nothing-as-of-yet DaveShack is asking for public opinion on where to found Olympus. Olympus will be the seat of power for the elected president Octavian X and Civver Zeus, our savior. But where to put it? We are situated on wheat and beside a river. Post your thoughts Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=125997)
Gauge of Interest - A Feudal Mini-Game: Preasident Octavian X is in support of a Fuedal Mini-Game. The game will follow a land owning type of system where there wil be land owners working specific tiles, trying to get them improved. More Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=126038)
Research 1st?: Being a small nation we have to play our cards right. What do we research first? Give us suggestions Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=125891)

Government Officials: Asking too much?

There are a few of discussions going around: Where to move our first arrior, where to place our first city and what we're going to be researching as our first technology. There are only a few discussions now, but as we progress, meet new neighbours and other sorts of things, these discussions will expand and expand in numbers. Soon they will become polls. Where am I going with this? There are to many and aren't that important. The Informant isn't just a thread to keep people updated: You can post your thoughts on what's going on. So do it; I am.

The Warrior Endeavor: Is it really that important?

Defense Minister vikingruler has posted a discussion on where to move the first warrior after its creation. Should we move it North, South-East or along the river? Citizens are going to the thread to post their suggestions on where to move it. Pourquoi? Perchè? Por que? Warum? Γιατί; Why?

Moving a warrior is not as big a deal as if we were transporting Nuclear Weapons. Of course this is the first term expansion and exploration taking effect but why do the citizens has to worry about where our Axe wielding looneies go to? So enough this will become a poll and it will only end after vikingrulers last term in office. Or the Ministies can become so attached to the citizens requests that the government will be a puppet for the citizens to work. We don't want that do we?

The warriors movement should be kept to the Defense Minister and not to the citizens. Soon we'll have citizens controlling every unit in our armed forces like land owners and Serfs. And once those units ggo down they'll want more. The warrior movement discussion has little point: End of discussion.

But the Trade and Technology Minister truckingpete has made a thread on what to research first and DaveShack has a thread on where to put Olympus. These discussions have a purpose. It is crucial that the citizens and the government work together in order to make the right decisions: Such as the right city locations and what to research. We can live if we can't uncover some possible warrior barbarians but we can't live if we make a mistake in what technologies to research first and where to put our capital.

Thats my thoughts,

Ic

IMHO, I think that you're overstating and understating the point of the poll at the same time.

You're understating by saying we're just moving a warrior for military purposes, and the citizens should not be involved in such a military task. If this were a navy armada that we wanted to use to get to another land to land an invasion fleet, I would say the Defense Ministry has a very good hold on that and no citizen intervention is needed. However, this is not just a military unit, it is working as a scout for the entire civilization, and where it goes is a big issue to people who want to make sure that we get off to a strong start. (Should we search for another civ, search for the ocean, search for a city site, search for lux's, etc.)

You're overstating that the poll (and also future polls) will give the citizins so much control over issues that the Defense Ministry is in charge of. Note that Vikingruler didn't ask the exact tracts of land to move the warrior each turn, just a general direction. The defense ministry still has control over the exact movements of the unit.

Icmancin
Aug 12, 2005, 01:30 PM
Yes alright, but is it really necessary to have the citizens posting where the scout goes? I do not think so. But what you're saying is that the citiznes should post suggestion for search for luxeries, civs etc. buty we haven o clue where any of these are. If simply saying which direction it goes does it really help to finding civs and luxeries? No, it just reveals territory with minmal possiblilties of actual success. And should this wait untill after the capital is founded? The borders will show land and the culture will too. That way we can make more precise decisions.

vikingruler
Aug 12, 2005, 06:06 PM
Look Icmancin, I felt that the people had a right to decide where our first scout unit moves. NOT it's turn by turn movement but general direction. This action can have a severe impact on the game, it can reveal 3 other civs, or meaningless tracts of land. Fertile grassland or barren tundra and desert. Either way, the people have a right to put in their opinion for this. The people will not be able to discuss this if we wait for Olympus to be founded, because the warrior WILL be built in that same turnchat.

Civlord
Aug 12, 2005, 06:23 PM
Sorry, vikingruler, but we seem to have understood that in the wrong way. Now I agree that the citizens should have influence over our scouting moves.

The way I see it, you can search West and probably hit a body of water soon. How do I know? I don't, but even though the map "wraps" doesn't mean that experience tells me that the landmass probably ends somewhere near the edge of the map. Or we can follow the due North knowing that we will at least have at least a river to build a city site on. Lastly, we can travel East (or NE) and try to go towards the center of the map, which would probably give us more land to explore but run us the risk of not being able to find a suitable spot for a second city. I give Vikingruler credit for giving the Citizens input, knowing that this units whereabouts are not purely militaristic in nature, but also scouting for civilian purposes. (Besides, who knows, maybe this round of citizens are Inuits and we all vote South :P)

News article draws heated Letters to Editor

In an unexpected development, publisher and editor of The Informant Icmancin drew harsh criticizm of his story on the recent polls by several leaders regarding our fledgling nation's first steps. Letters to the editor reflected concerns that it is too early to tell whether our leaders are puppets to the whim of public opinion, and pointed out possible journalistic license with the actual facts of the military leader's poll.

At this point it is too early to tell whether the letter writing campaign is motivated by genuine concern in responsible journalism or a poorly hidden attempt by special interests to protect their own turf. Time will tell, but it is good to see the other segments of the report, on Olympus placement and what to research, seem to have been well received by the subscribers.

I actually would like to commend IC on the article. While I may not have agreed with the opinion stated, the story no doubt drew attention to the way government offices were being run and drew some debate to ensure that all was running smoothly. While this time there wasn't an uproar of agreement, next time we could agree that something wrong is being done and start a change of protocol. IC, IMO, has shown willingness to cover government in a way to keep them on their toes about obeying the "Will of the Assembly".

Violating Territory

Expatriate Governer RegentMan has opened a discussion on wether or not we should violate Frances border for exploration purposes. Being Empress Arc, we will annoy the French leader into threatening us. Remember, our military is equal to one Brigade (some 3000 soldiers) compared to a much larger French army of well over 10 000 soldiers. This exploration task concerns the Expatriate Governner because he will not have a city unless one is captured. What do you think we should do?

"C'est pas possible. Fanatikos est merde!"

Clearly Civver Zues is not getting along well with the french Empress. The language difference will also cause many problems. truckingpete announced that he may not make it to the turnchat. He is asking US to tell him what we think he should do.

The Barbarian Menace

Defense Minister vikingruler has announced that Ares, the second warrior battalion, has been defeated by the Phoenician militia outside of our borders. the marauders were attacked in hopes of increasing national security but infact decreased it. vikingruler gave the following suggestion on what we should do next:

I suggest allowing Athena to continue her exploration with her new path of a circular direction and let the 3rd warrior built to the remaining half circle. Therefore, I suggest waiting for our 5th warrior, the 4th should be used for garrisioning duties, to dispatch of the barbarians. Since a casulty has already been sustained, and the Romans and French are both poised to attack the barbs instead of us I felt the people should give their opinion on this.

Using five warriors did not go over will with the Assembly. The Assembly members which gave their thoughts are proposing that our next warrior battalion should be used to destroy the Phoenician militia. Please post your thoughts Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=126580)

First Contact

In response to meeting the French, we had found another advanced race: The Romans. Roman cultureis quite similar to ours. The Roman military is also quite large. they too are a city state; their capital currently resides in Rome. It is unknown where Rome is actually located but Athena, our first battalion has found French border markers. Rome is ahead in technology of us by three, and ahead of France by one. It is undoubted that Fanatikos is considered a backward, barbarian state, which is not worth anything more than the Phoenicians. We will prove them wrong.

A Backwards Nation

A downcast Minister of Trade and Technology has reported that we are officially dumb. truckingpete has reprted that both the french and Romans have more technologies than us, including all the technologies we know. Trades are open!

Minister of Trade and technology truckingpete has annuonced that rades with foeign powers can now be made. Fanatikos, Episode I: The Foreign Menace

Unfortunately we are in a "Dilly of a pickle." Barbarian soldiers ravage the land and the Imperial Powers are in search of war. We are behind them in technology, wealth and military might. There are many disscussions about what to do. The only thing we can do is wait. Wait and progress. But we do have one thing other them: The intelligent minds and organization of the Fanatikos government. We are more numerous that they and we can make decisions as a group instead of being lead by a single despot. That is the only thing we have on them. And we will use it.

The End of Term One: Chances for new leaders and new hopes

The End of Term One

Term one is drawing to a close. Every position is accepting nominees. Term two is a chance for new opportunity for evryone. Defeated nominees in last terms elections return for another shot. They may not come back for the same shot but they're back for another shot. Like when you have too much whiskey and then you want some tequila. Something like that.

Positions are being changed around. CivGeneral, previous nominee for the position of Defense Minister, is now campaigning for the title of mayor of our next city, the third. truckingpete and vikingruler have accepted nominations for thier origninal position. I am going to campaign for Minister of Foreign Affairs position again. Nobody, our current Minister of Foreign Affairs, has not accepted his nomination.

The nomination tracker thread is located Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=126985)

I will be keeping you updated on the Elections in small news burst as well as the sencond day editions.

Update

DaveShack has added a new twist to the DG VII elections. He is a nominee for two positions, the Public defender and the Exptriate Governer. He has said:

I'm self-nominating and accepting here and for Public Defender, because both offices have no nominees. My intent is to withdraw from this race if someone else accepts, not because I don't want it to be contested, but because I don't want PD to remain open. I accepted PD first so if there are no other accepts in either one, PD takes precedence.

A very interesting move. Last term there were very few elections occured (of 13 positions only 4 were actually voted upon. This does not count the DP Pool).

Nobody was asked to run for Minister of Foreign Affairs but declined in favor of being the Governer of City 3.

mhcarver has declined the role of Public Defender, the office which he held last term.

RegentMan, our current Expatriate Governer, has marked himself undecided after a self nomination. :hmm:

Octavian X is going for unother shot (not of alcohol) for President. The race remains uncontested; Ravensfire has declined a nomination and Chieftess and Furiey have not replied.

Thats all on the election update,

Shocking News!

Writing Lost!

The Foreign powers have obtained the secrets of Writing which our scholars were researching.... slowly. Every nation but the German Reich has obtained the knowledge. Should we continue to Philosophy? Or go to Literature? We would not be in this position if the government had put more funding in the science department, thats what I think. The disscussion on what to do next is located Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=127206)

War in the World!

War has been declared between the French Empire and the German Reich. The Reich is located to the far east of Fanatikos while the French Empire is in the North. We have very little knowledge of ethier nations city locations or military power. Fanatikos, Rome and the newly found Persian Empire under the control of Shah Xerxes, have declared their neutrality for the time being. We do not know where the front lines are located. All we know is that war is between the Reich and Empire has begun. We cannot report loss of cities because we don't know where they are. We do not even know the cause of the war.

The Stables

The Augean Stables has been founded on the famous "Pink Dot." The current Governer is greekguy, but that may change next term. The surrounding lands may also become a battleground for the marauding german and French forces.

A Term in Review

Hello everyone. Today is Saturday. I missed out on last Saturdays edition but I won't today. being the last Saturday before the end of the term, I will use today as a time to post thoughts about the entire term that has just gone by so quickly.

First I'd like to commend our elected officials. They have done a great job in leading Fanatikos into the World. Some of them are staying for this next term, some are swiching positions and some are leaving. But those that are leaving, their places will be filled with new faces. New faces that could help in the betterment of Fanatikos or they could lead us to utter destruction. :joke:

There are three cities in Fanatikos already. Our wonderful capital Olympus, her sister city, Civatonia and the great northern Augean Stables. Their locations have been chosen by the will of the Assembly and they have gone into great locations. Sadly there is trouble in the air. Three great events have already shaken the Fanatik nation.

First was the Phoenicians. The backwards people had declared was on our great nation in an effort to destroy it. We would not yield however and launched the Western Campaign. 2nd Infantry Battalion "Ares" was sent to rid the world of the Phoenician scum. The campaign was a failure however, and of the one thousand soldiers sent in the Ares Battalion only fifty-three returned. They were shattered people and of those fifty-three, six more died later of trauma, diesease or wounds. It is a horrible thing to happen to Fanatikos. It could not have been prevented.

Secondly Civatonia has recently been ransacked by barbarians. The Chieftess Barracks which was under construction has burned to the ground and they stole some of our gold. This artocity could have been stopped! Our great Hoplites, our elite spear defenders, should have been trained instead of the building the Barracks. The Hoplite Battalion would have not been as trained but it would have stemmed the Barbarian advance into Civatonia. This was a blunder by the government which has left Civatonia, now with no defenders or Barracks and the Barbarians have now gold to fund their terror organization. It was a horrible thing that happened to Civatonia, one that could have been prevented.

Thirdly the secrets of Writing, which our scholars had thought would bring us fame and fortune, has been discovered by every foreign nation save the German Reich. This was a massive shock to Fanatiks all around. Our chances for intelligence has been, almost, ultimately crushed. If our government officials had been more willing to put more funding into science we would be at the top of the intelligence train. But we went at the most minimum possible. It has been a near fatal decision. But hope is still here. The newly found Persian Empire has not obtained the secrets of Iron Working. The Germans have but they have not found Writing. Our cunning leaders have proposed a massive technology exchange. Writing to Germany for Iron Working, Iron Working to Persia for the Wheel + Gold and finally Gold to France for Warrior Code. The strategy may pay off. But we wouldn't be reduced to this should more money had been poured into Science.

The warring nations of Germany and France are now in a duel for power. Fanatikos, Rome and Persia are neutral. Next term we must act. France is a Commercial and Industrial power while the Reich is a Military power. Our heirarchy must side (diplomaticly) with the French. I propose that after the technology trade we sever relations with Germany. We should allow the French to pass troops through Fanatik territory. We should (if possible) ask any German soldiers to leave. We are not prepared to go to war with the Germans so we cannot order them to leave. I propose a pro-French attitude. The Germans are in an expansionist mood and we cannot allow them to achieve thier goals. We should give Diplomatic aid to the French. We do not want a powerful expansionist Germany streching from the East to the West, but a weak Germany huddled in the East.

This term has been a good start but there have been blunders. They are not fatal. But they can be if we do not agree as a whole. The only hting we have on the enemies is Organization and Co-Operation. We have to implement it.

Yes, they are very aggressive, Ic. But now we are very weak, and we need to be in good relations with them until everyone of our cities has a hoplite defending it. A war with them won't be easy, but it will be necessary. The pro-french atitude, in the future, can be a great strategy, but for now it is a bit premature.

I don't mean to annoy Germany, but we should just give the French a covert advantage thats all. No declarations of war or anyhting, just letting the French use Fanatikos as a base. If Germany wants to talk lets just deny some of them, thats all.

Starting with a BANG!

Minister of Trade and Technology truckingpete wants to maximize science trade. We are a nation that is searching for "Philosophy" and our Scholars believe that by obtaining such technology it would allow us to be taught another secret immediately. Should we trade it around? For what secrets? What secret should we unlock upon obtaining this secret? Post your thoughts Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=127621)

Lightning Strikes Twice

Artemis, another ill-equipped battalion of soldiers, has been destroyed. There were no survivors. The information is sketchy. Give your thoughts Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=127624)

Is it worth our time?

Our leaders are having doubts about the "Great Library." A structure so large, that it would house scholars from Fanatikos to Persia, France to Germany. The scholars would share their secrets to ours and we would (coverly) obtain the knowledge! Espionage at its best! But the endeavor would be very costly, 400 megatons of production. It would take years to contruct. But first we must obtain "Literature," what our scholars say is the use of Writing into large documents which would give us information. Using our Alphabet, we turned the letters into words. We know think that the words will be a success in large quantities for information storage. What do you think? Look Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=127688)

Modifications to Fanatikos Citizen structure

Judge Advocate Strider has is proposing a concept to change the Citizen structure of Fanatikos. MORE INFORMATION! Is the main goal. Reorganization of our Forums, extension of the Information Office and summaries are some of the important goals our Judge Advocate wishes to accomplish. What do you think? Proposal Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=127473)

Priapos

Provolution, Governer and Senator of the new Priapos city is hosting two disscussions: Where to place Priapos and Citizen passes. The placement is for Priapos to be founded by the coast, and making it an economical superpower, sadly at the expense of some Olympus lands. The overlap is the only minor negative effect. The opposition is headed by Timbently. He proposes a Priapos "In the Steppe" a buffer between foreign powers and The Augean Stables. The disscussion is Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=127557) and the Poll Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=127697)

Provolution is handing out Citizen Passes which will provide ten special rights to owners of these passes. They allow citizens of Priapos the will to vote in Priapos matters and other specific privleges. The option to take a pass is up to the citizen; why you can be a Citizen of Olympus, Styx, The Augean Stables instead. The thread is Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=127652)

The Styx Myth

Stuck_as_a_Mac, Governer and Senator of Styx has requested the knowledge of the citizens: What is the Myth behind Styx. He does not know. He has a contest going on for the most creative myth. The Augean Stables

The Augean Stables. The land around it is full of mysteries. The is an exciting place, naturally. It itself is a landmark, the Stables being founded before the discovery of Horses by Fanatikos. We had no clue what these monsters were, they were Fell Beasts of Hades! Until today. What would you name the surroundings? Dear readers of the Informant,

This is an OOC letter.

There is an extreme lack of participation in all role-play attempts in this game. I have played on role-play forums before and found them very fun but here itv is a dead seriousness. The Styx Myth has only one response, thank you greekguy. The Informant strongly supports the use of role-play. DaveShacks old role-play contest in term I was an utter failure because no one participated. vikingruler, in his comments to The Informant, has use role-play and I thank him for that. I use role-play as much as I can in my Articles. I wish that the citizens of Fanatikos could act like citizens of Fanatikos. I find role-playing fun and and I find the political side fun as well. Is there a way we can merge them? Yes we can! Disscussions should be conducted in a role-play fashions as should responses to The Informant and EVERYTHING! The turnchats and their threads, and polls, and Government threads should be excluded. But we should at least try to get role-play involved.

This is a special letter to the readers,

Minister of Trade and Technology truckingpete has requested that I post a complete article written by him:

Term 2 - T n'T (Trade and Tech.) - Were Dynamite!!

Yes, that's right, I think this term should be a, well, a BANG!!..Or a big dud...who knows, but I think it's going to be great!! With the last term, we succesfully researched or traded for these techs:

Bronze Working
Alphabet
The Wheel
Warrior Code
Ceremonial Burial
Iron Working
Writing

But we are still on our way to the biggest and best building every in Scientific History..as of now...

THE GREAT LIBRARY!!

With last term, we did a 3 way trade that caught us up in the Tech. Race a little bit. Once we get the Great Library, we are going to get techs like crazy..so we can relax a little bit on techs...

BUT...

We have to get the Great Library 1st. I and every citizens that I know of hopes and crosses our fingers and toes to get the Great Library...but we have to get Philo 1st, if not...we are going to play catch up..I just hope, HOPE, it does not come to that.

So I would like to thank you for my support and hope this term is going to be a BANG!!

Thanks truckingpete! Although I did post it late..
