vingrjoe Aug 09, 2005, 07:13 PM Since I've been dabbling in armor lately, I thought I'd do another armored unit. This is the BTR-152 APC. I just finished painting it in DeepPaint 3D. I still have to add a human model behind the machine gun.
Removed image for space. A full preview can be seen in the "Finished Units" forum.

W.i.n.t.e.r Aug 09, 2005, 07:53 PM Hey :) you really seem to dig wheeled/tracked units now that you completed your masterpiece glad to see you are carrying on with them by perfecting perfection! I think the civ-scale preview colour is fitting.

Note both painted-over patterns... the one serving as background for the white numberings is about the same colour you are using as texture.

vingrjoe Aug 10, 2005, 08:18 AM The original bumper I made was the correct U shaped (a U shaped piece on it's side). When I transfer Nurbs to mesh in Rhino3D, it always puts more polys than needed in the mesh, even at it's lowest setting. So when I imported it into 3DMax, I just quickly whipped up a blocky bumper, this helped cut down on polygons, of course, at this stage high polys aren't really an issue.
Hmm, now that I looked back at my referrence photos, it wouldn't hurt to
scale the whole bumper down entirely.
Okay, here's a new Civ scale preview with a resized bumper, I think it does actually look better.

vingrjoe Aug 10, 2005, 11:37 AM Here is an ingame screenshot. The Civ color may be hard to see on some civs, if they use a darker color, like China in El Justo's TCW. I am not adding any more Civ color though, since I have all but the death animation done.

I know this is gonna be contradictory... But have you experimented with an over sized gunner?
Make the bumper the right size, make the gunner the wrong size. hehehe.
I don't know what sort of mesh you're using for the gunner, I'm guessing it is just a a textured version of one of the little humans figures, which should be just a few seconds of work to fiddle with in scale (if you are so inclinded).
Looking fwd to seeing the final unit.
