As I don't think it would be fitting to start a new topic just for this, I decided I'd post this query here (and in the RAR thread).

Namely, which mod do you prefer between the two? Both are designed amazingly well, and in the end, I think it comes down to personal preference. RAR is all about expanding on all aspects of the game to create the ultimate epic Civ experience. RoC on the other hand adheres much more closely to the original game, tweaking the rules significantly however in an attempt to create a much more realistic empire building simulation then Firaxis gave us.

I'd be curious to hear where your preferences lie, and the reasons why.

RAR ends up spending way too much time with loading. RoCX lets you spend your time playing.

Despite the fact that RAR has tons more eye candy (units galore, techs and widgets and wonders), many, if not all, are redundant or never used. RoCX's units, on the other hand, were all intended to fulfill a specific purpose. Their graphics are quality, and you will see them all in a game... well... except maybe chariots ;p

RoCX is also on a world map, which allows the inclusion of landmark terrain and minor resource tweaks that encourage realism in development from the various civilizations, AI and Human.

If you want to spend a lot of time waiting for loads and choosing between a horde of units, RAR. Its pretty, and it can be fun. If you want a solid game that attempts to duplicate the development of the real world, RoCX.

What is RoC?

RoC = Rhye's of Civilizations. Along with this one, it stands in the top tier as far as Civ 3 mods go. For more information about it, check out the thread on this message board.

Thread split off of Rhye's and RnR. We don't need to threadjack those threads with discussion of which is better.

We'd also prefer not to have the same post/types of posts in different threads.

Finally, moved to Creation & Customization.

Well I'd just like to toss in my vote for Ryhe's. What Aeon said. As for RaR, to be honest, I just don't think its very polished at all.

I've played both and think that they are really very different. RoX is primarily designed for the world map, in fact I've never even played its random version. Its games are faster paced than RaR, and all of its additions are important. Everything has a perfect pedia entry and its supremely polished. Oh yeah, and it has super fast load times.

RaR has an incredibly number of new units. Many are of excellent quality, but others unfortunately are not. Due to its sheer size it would be almost impossible to get it as polished and finely tuned as RoX. Its a good diversion from regular C3C.

Both are very good mods, but overall I'd go with RoX.

I'll admit that I've never played RoC, But I do use his terrain. I usually play RaR, cuz I like that it has lots of techs, units, and governments, as well as different kinds of settlers. I dont like that the maps are too small for me I have modified it to include larger maps(300x300 huge map), and more unit movement. Something I really hate is that they have been promising 1.04 for like 3 months now and it's still not out of beta.

I'll tell you my opinion.

As you say, RaR expands a game into an epic game, while the thing you say "adheres much more closely to the original game" can be refered to basic RoC. In fact it had, virtually no addition (except some leaderheads, civs and graphics: almost no techs and no units).
The expanded version (RoCX) stands in the middle. It adds more stuff (but still fewer than the huge amounts of RaR) but preserves RoC quality.
(actually, there was even a row about this subject, in the moment of the ROCX release)
