Where should we place our next city?
|
View Full Version : Next City azzaman333 Aug 13, 2005, 09:40 AM Where should we place our next city? azzaman333 Aug 13, 2005, 09:44 AM I personally like #2, it uses the flood plain + wheat, 3 forests and 2 BG, but it isnt on the river, which would require us to build an aquaduct. fe3333au Aug 13, 2005, 10:24 AM I'd actually like to know what is north of 1 ... if that is better I'd settle there in the 'black' ... else either 1 or 3 Chamnix Aug 13, 2005, 11:19 AM Definitely other - specifically the tile SE of 1 (S of 3). The poll choices are all too far away. This game will most likely be decided long before Sanitation (especially since it is a small map) so our cities will never be above size 12 and they don't need that much space between them. Close city spacing has the following advantages: 1. Better for defense because troops can move from one town to the next in 1 turn. 2. Shared tiles - in the early game when most land is unimproved, it is critical to be able to swap an improved tile from one city to another depending on which needs it to minimize waste. 3. Less corruption - on a small emperor map, corruption will get severe quickly. I think the site I propose has plenty of food (flood plains, potentially sharing the irrigated cow and wheat, and sharing the other wheat once we found another city further west), and plenty of production (BGs and forests). BigNHuge Aug 13, 2005, 11:44 AM i like 3 because it could become a worker factory. fe3333au Aug 13, 2005, 11:54 AM This game will most likely be decided long before Sanitation (especially since it is a small map). I agree with your logic ... however if you checkout post1 of Looking Glass ... the map is standard size ... I asked this question in the UN and answered by Ric (who, I think, consulted the designer) ... check my post for more info on the map ... It is continental but I'm not sure it is 70% Chamnix Aug 13, 2005, 02:42 PM i like 3 because it could become a worker factory. Possible, but I don't think we have enough information for that - a worker factory should have +5fpt and +5spt (after corruption so probably +6spt gross). We can get +5fpt with the irrigated wheat, but there is only 1 bonus grassland in sight so far. The other issue I see with a worker city there is that we are definitely going to want a military-producing city somewhere, and that area (only a little closer to the capital to snag another BG) is our best productive area. Where will our military come from if not from that area? The capital will be settlers, the coast will be mostly ships (and coastal tiles have no shields making them inappropriate for military), and further away will be corrupt. fe3333au Aug 13, 2005, 03:03 PM I agree with your logic ... however if you checkout post1 of Looking Glass ... the map is standard size ... General_W Aug 13, 2005, 09:21 PM ok - I voted for 3, but if this is an 80x80 map - I'd be real happy with being closer to Athens. The builder in me cries out for more land - but this game probably won't get that far. Kentharu Aug 14, 2005, 02:22 AM one tile N of #3 along the river would be good if that is not posible then #3 as it is would be fine fe3333au Aug 14, 2005, 02:23 AM Looks like 3 it is ... could I suggest a previso ... when we approach the site , our sight will reveal the darkness ... if a better site is revealed can the Domestic Minister veto the 3 site for the better one ... classical_hero Aug 14, 2005, 02:25 AM The good thing about option three is that it will not pop up the goody hut. azzaman333 Aug 18, 2005, 06:51 AM :bump: anyone who hasnt voted for where our next city should be should do it in the next 20 hours. after that, it is decided. deadline is 8am GMT, Friday 19th Rambuchan Aug 18, 2005, 11:44 AM I agree with 3 - worker factory, no aqueduct needed, forests for good production, just beyond a 3 move on a road from our Capital but that's ok. We need to keep a military patrolling around there though. We are open to barbs coming from all sides. I advance vote also for smacking one down on 6 or 7. The extra cash from that tobacco is essential early!!! Cash cash cash, makes the military roll out hard and the science go fast. Cash cash cash! |
