The Public Defender is part of the Judicial Branch along with the Chief Justice and Judge Advocate, and is tasked with upholding, clarifying and reviewing all changes to the Constitution and its supporting laws through Judicial Reviews, and upholding the rights of all citizens through Investigations. The Judiciary will carry out all its tasks in a fair, impartial, public and speedy manner.

The Public Defender will act as council to an accused citizen, if the accused citizen wishes.

Please submit nominations for the Public Defender in this thread and Accept or Decline any nominations you may receive. Self nominations are allowed. Citizens may only run for one elected position.

Nominations will close and elections open 00:00 GMT on the 28 August (that’s 8pm EDT 27 August).

I'll self-nominate and accept. I'm doing this in two offices (here and expatriate) with the understanding that the first one accepted counts, so that if someone else accepts here and expatriate remains with no candidates I can withdraw from this one and take the other office instead.

This does not in any way mean I don't want a contested election, just there are two offices with no accepts and I'm trying to make sure everything is filled...

I thought you can only run in one election per-say on the consitution :hmm:.

Correct CG, DaveShack has informed me about the 2 acceptances. This, the first acceptance, will be the one that goes through if both are still open at the start of the elections. DaveShack will only be in one election (apart from the DP pool of course).

I self nominate and accept (having withdrawn my nomination for Governor of Olympus.

There may be a period at the end of the term where my internet access is sporadic, however I feel this can be easier managed here than in Olympus! :)

On further consideration I'll decline my self-nomination here to stay in the Expatriate Governor election, so the non-judiciary race is contested.

I think I'll self-nominate and accept here. I've been following the Judiciary, and I'd like to be a part of it this term.

@bootstots and civman2004

Do you believe our laws should be dynamic and changing with the times or farely stable and try to keep things the way they are?

I'd advocate a moderate position. Our laws should be able to change fairly easily (the constitution less so, but still amendable), to correct unforeseen problems, allow for new ideas to be implemented, remove things that have been shown to be unconstitutional or useless, make the system more democratic, and the like. However, I think the basic structure we have in the game should not, barring a disastrous failure, change in mid-stream. In DG7, we elected to have a somewhat different system than in previous demogames, and we should generally stick with it, though we should be able to do things like eliminate useless offices or add needed ones if an error like that becomes apparent midgame.

So that's my take on it. However, I'm responding more as a citizen here, since the judiciary's job is not to create new laws, but instead to interpret the existing ones. If elected, I will uphold the law and any valid amendments to it, whether or not I agree with them.

I hope that answers your question. :)
