The poll is misleading... you don't point out the risk associated with going either path. Yes, if we research philsophy we get a free tech, but that's only if we research it first. If an AI manages to beat us to it, we are screwed.. completely. We have no free tech, and no trades to bring to the bargaining table.

Literature... all the way.

I think the AI popping philosophy from a hut is a greater risk than their researching philosophy before map making.

I think that we need to raise the science rate to 100% and go straight for Philosophy. Since everyone only just discovered Writing, it's worth the risk.

I encourage all citizens interested in 100% Philosophy to post their concerns in the President's Office (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=125757). Without his buy-in, we may as well research Lit.

Philosophy as long as it is at maximum. if we carry on at minimum and waste gold on unnecessary luxuries (necessary luxuries are a different matter) as we are now we might as well not bother.

I change my opinion: We must head for Philosophy! At maximum, there is no other way.

go for philo at max. we can take the gold hit, we have plenty and we will still have plenty if we build embassies. therefore no risk is assciated with 100% tech rate on philo.

We must go for Lit at max, as TimBentley said there is a risk that the AI discovers philo before us and then get Lit for free or with research bonuses. We must not risk that GL.

I vote full speed Philo.

I do believe that people who vote Lit. understand that we will be losing our gpt (and thus our total gold in general, at minimum 98 gold lost due to research, but will definetly be more). However, right now we are playing catch up in tech, and I believe that we can get philosphy first.

At full speed we can get Philosophy in 14 (and Literature if we are first there) or Literature in 24, thats 10 turns later. If you are worried that the AI will get Philosophy first and Literature as a free tech, then they are more likely to do that if we give them an extra 10 turns to do it in by researching next Literature ourselves.

If the AI get philosophy first (I'm assuming they get it from a goody hut, since that's the only thing that makes sense to me), they would get map making free (because that's what they would be researching).
