View Full Version : New unit: Wood Elf Waywatcher (Aug 31st, 2005)
aaglo Aug 31, 2005, 03:00 AM Hi!
Here is another warhammer fantasy unit - but maybe it can be used in various other scenarios too. A Wood Elf Waywatcher. Enjoy :)
Here's some civilopedia copied from the games workshop website:
Guardians of the paths leading into Athel Loren, the Waywatchers are silent and deadly sentinels. They are masters of concealment, and have trained themselves so that they can lie unnoticed and unmoving for days on end before springing into action to slay a startled and unfortunate prey. Long years of practice with their chosen weapon has left each Waywatcher capable of a tremendous rate of fire, able to loose an unerring stream of black-shafted arrows one after another, seemingly without pause and without loss of accuracy. Any who enter Athel Loren run the risk of being slain without warning by the Waywatchers, cut down by unseen archers or falling prey to their cunningly constructed traps. When the call to battle comes, the Waywatchers band together into small groups. Their uncanny skills naturally lend themselves to the arts of disruption and surprise, appearing silently next to a vulnerable enemy and vanishing as quickly as they came before his body hits the ground.

KingArthur Aug 31, 2005, 04:52 AM Nice work.. these guys sound like a fantasy version of the SAS.
Supa Aug 31, 2005, 04:58 AM Oh oh, I think I found my Kirath :)
Good one, Aaglo.
R8XFT Aug 31, 2005, 05:22 AM Absolutely fabulous  !!
mrtn Aug 31, 2005, 07:40 AM Marvelous! I like the details of the pedia pic. :)
Mr. Do Aug 31, 2005, 07:55 AM Excellent, that'll be the last unit to be added to the WH mod then :)
Only, how should I add it in? An upgrade for the Glade Guard (Wood Elf Archer) unit? But then the Glade Guard would disappear after a while! Perhaps a stealth attacking unit, that would fit their snipey-snipey demeanour, yeeees...
Yorgos Aug 31, 2005, 08:05 AM To bad, I could have added it in Midgard as an upgrade of the elf archer if you had finished it a couple of days earlier... we will have to wait then. Fabulous unit!
woodelf Aug 31, 2005, 08:08 AM A unit after my own heart. Gorgeous. Any chance I can use it for my picture?
Raw is War? Aug 31, 2005, 09:25 AM Oh my! I love him aaglo! Just amazing! :)

I'd propably add him on the third age, maybe invention 12(6)-5-2, ROF 2, all terrain as roads, cost 120-150 ?
Mr. Do Aug 31, 2005, 10:51 AM Invention seems like the usual place for powerful later-age units, although it doesn't really fit for the Waywatcher, but it'll probably go there anyway. Those stats are way too powerful, I'll probably go with 9(6)-4-2 (ROF is irrelevent) -1HP (since WW act in incredibly small groups) and stealth attack. I'm tempted to also add this unit to the High Elves as well as a "Shadow Warrior", but using the same graphic for multiple units isn't the nicest thing to do...
Orthanc Aug 31, 2005, 10:56 AM Beautiful modelling and animation as always aaglo, I don't think you'll ever lose your touch.
Vuldacon Aug 31, 2005, 11:06 AM Looks Good aaglo... :goodjob:
Mithadan Aug 31, 2005, 11:54 AM I daresay that gorgeous unit will be going into the Lord of the Mods. Thank-you, aaglo!
(Wow, I remember the days when he would only do ships because humanoid units "weren't possible with Pov-Ray." How times have changed!)
Gomurr Sep 01, 2005, 06:20 AM Great Unit, Aaglo. Even after all the units you've made, your artwork never ceases to amaze me.

Personally, I think you might be looking at these guys from the wrong angle. They are defenders, not attackers, for the most part. As such, I would give them a weak or moderate attack, and a strong defense - possibly a stealth attack and/or invisibility would be appropriate as well.
tjedge1 Sep 01, 2005, 06:23 AM Nice job as usual aaglo.

Well I was already torn like that! Waywatchers are defenders, yes, but they are also scouts in the tabletop game, so it's a bit of a difficult unit to place without getting in the way of other units in the game (e.g. the eternal guard who take the pikeman role for the wood elves). I think they need to be stronger on the attack personally, though, because anyone that manages to charge them will invariably beat them in combat, so their best role is in getting the attack in first.
Whatever we go with, invisibility is not an option in civ 3.
aaglo Sep 01, 2005, 08:38 AM Hey, how about 6(6)-6-2, -1HP, Stealth attack, available at assasination?
Because the wood elf defender range ends at the glade guard (now I suppose you've named it as eternal guard).
mrtn Sep 01, 2005, 09:00 AM I dislike those -1 HP ideas; this effectively makes the unit 25% worse than the stats show. While they are few (I suppose this is were the idea comes from) they are elite too.
Other techs to put them in (besides Assassination) could be Feudalism or Chivalry. I think I prefer Feudalism.
If that eternal guard comment means that you have added a 2/6/2 unit for the wood elves, then maybe a 3rd era tech would be best, and corresponding stats.
Seeing as that the wood elves don't know Architecture, you could add a new Waywatchers tech after Engineering, in the same place in the tech tree. Or add them at Astronomy... (because, eh, elves like the stars? :crazyeye: )
Mr. Do Sep 01, 2005, 09:01 AM wood elves start off with a wood elf warrior 3/4/2 (That lovely warden by kinboat had to get a place in the mod) that upgrades to eternal guard 3/6/2. I think 6(6)/6/2 -1HP stealth will work well, yes, cos then it won't step on any other unit's toes and will be a handy unit to use sparingly.
random fact: the current wood elf archer made by embryodead was based on the old waywatcher models. Yup.
mrtn Sep 01, 2005, 09:10 AM But units with -1 HP are useless! The attackers are bad and seldom survive (the darkelf witches and the mount arachnos spiders), a dual purpose unit with -1 HP would be even more useless. They are too weak to use for both attack and defense. I'd only build them if I didn't get iron and had to get some attackers before the Treemen. No, on second though, I wouldn't. I'd just keep building the 1st era archers as they are better.
I think that they should be expensive but good units, a weak elite just doesn't work for me... :(
Mr. Do Sep 01, 2005, 09:42 AM There is no possible role the Waywatchers could fill without an HP disadvantage. At least with the stealth attack option they can pick their targets, and they are fast so they can flee. If you keep building the first era archers, then good, they're not meant to ever go obselete!
Goldflash Sep 01, 2005, 07:24 PM I think I know this gu. I"m pretty sure he ame into the Gas Station and Bought some Arizona Asia Plum Green Tea and a Granola bar.
I am the Future Sep 01, 2005, 08:31 PM This would make a cool anceint age assasin. Just to leave the Fantasy relm

Snorken Sep 09, 2005, 06:29 PM Excellent unit, aaglo! :)
Sildo Sep 09, 2005, 06:31 PM I was browsing the old posts and noticed this had three things you "couldn't do in pov rar" a human figure, a cloak, and a bow, nice job!
Goldflash Sep 11, 2005, 10:10 PM Aaglo isnits he can't do horses either, but he has already done soem (some dead ones, but they're still horses).
PCHighway Sep 12, 2005, 04:08 PM Very cool unit Aaglo. :goodjob:
Left Sep 12, 2005, 07:01 PM Now all you need to do is a dwarf chariot pulled by mountain goats.
HINT
;)
Mr. Do Sep 12, 2005, 07:25 PM Let's not forget the fishmen unit that aaglo promised us!
NB no promise actually made.
aaglo Sep 13, 2005, 03:36 AM What fishmen? Where fishmen? And most of all, why fishmen? :)
Mr. Do Sep 13, 2005, 10:41 AM Fishmen are a mythical people even in the world of fantasy. Whenever people wonder which army book GW are releaseing next, they get told that the Fishmen are coming!
aaglo Sep 13, 2005, 10:53 AM mmmm.... fish.... they're best smoked :p
