That's right! We got a SGL discovering Literature!

I think we should build the Great Library in a border city (most likely one that's inland). Reason? More land grab.

I suggest Civatonia. ;)

Civatonia - free culture to pressure the German capital for future wars. Helps to claim another BG and hills for more and more production. The more land we cover, the better we are off.

Although I would like to see the GL in Olympus, now, for cultural reasons, it would be better to build it near our future enemies (as I believe): the germans. Let's rush it in Civatonia.

And now a word from The Reverend

Brothers and Sisters. It has come to my attention that a wise thinker has been delivered to us by God Almighty. Halleluja! The great mind Aristotle has blessed us with his presence.

Now, I'm not here to talk about three kinds of friendships. No, lordy Or origins of the state. nu-uh Not even the education No no! Of Alexander the Great Yes yes!

What I'm talkin about today, my brothers and sisters, is the Great Library. I foresaw it in a dream, and lordy! It is real! In my dream, I asked the Lord, "Lord, How can I make Styx all that it can be, and more?"

With that, the Lord showed me a Sight. I had Seen before, but brothers and sisters, this was a glorious Sight. I saw Styx, a vibrant city. Men and women working together to make it as colorful as it could be. Anual parades a-sweapin down the streets. A joyful noise like I had never heard before echoing out of the city. And in the center, I Saw a beautiful sight. A golden library holdin' all the books of the world. It taught you everything you need to know. It was the Great Library and it was in Styx.

Brothers and Sisters, this was a happy Sight. And we can make it come true. We can make it happen! Send Aristotle down to Styx. Let him set up shop and create this Great Library! Lord, let the music play and the good times swing. Let the old men be happy once more as their city lights up. Let it be Big. Let it be Easy.

Can I hear an Amen? AMEN! I said, can I hear an Amen? AMEN! AMEN!

Amen, brothers and sisters, Amen! Praise the Lord and Halleluja!

We also need to remember that this is a 5CC, and we'll need as much culture over LAND as possible. Why? So we can claim more resources without resorting to colonies! It'll also deny the AI from some land to build in.

CT, let's open a poll. The majority will decide that.

I would argue differently, we need quality land our cities can work, in addition to luxuries and strategic resources. From that viewpoint, I wholeheartedly agree on that Civatonia should have Great Library. Civatonia should first change the build queue and get out another hoplite. However, I am not part of the ratrace for any tile, as the succesful polling of Priapos is evident for. As we now got Great Library, we can as well max out gold, which actually gives us some decisive power, unlike the Mongolian Void some 21 Tile Adventists advocate for.

The great library in Civatonia sounds fine to me. Then we can go 0% science, boost up our gold, build some veteran warriors, upgrade to swords, and give me some cities to rule! :whipped:

How about we use the SGL to build the Great Library. Does not matter where since we have the resource just sitting there teaching Alexander ;).

I think we need to be careful before we endorse a strict 0% setting for science research, although we may want to consider that for the meantime while we get our Libraries up and running.

How do Libraries fit into a zero science scheme? Well, they are the best improvement to get us quick culture so we should have them anyway. I think that Civatonia can build the Great Library once it completes the regular one in 4 turns. Can we wait that long for all that tech?

Provolution
Sep 03, 2005, 01:59 PM
I think we still need to research, but in a beeline that avoids education, this not only in order to get an edge on the other civs, but also to aquire NEW scientific leaders. Yes, we may actually get more of them if we get to new technologies first. I am amazed the 21 Tile Adventists do not see that.

So, we need specialized techs upward in certain components of the tech tree, but we can sure raise more gold than originally planned.

5 Cities with 4 free upkeep each, gives us a free military force of 20 minus workers.

I think the consequence of this situation should be to get Republic, then mapmaking, then beeline to Currency to get marketplaces in time in order to profit from the Great Library, THEN we can turn down the technology slider some.

DZ, Civatonia should complete a hoplite instead in one turn, then churn out the Great Library next turn there again. This avoids a waste of shields and give regional security.

Ginger_Ale

I would not go 0% science - however, if we do, don't skimp on improvements like markets and libraries. We can't go 100% units.

Sorry, I missed that in your last post. I am perfectly fine with that, although mine is not the last word. I will discuss this with Governor Chieftess.

Other wonders that could be rushed are Colossus and the Mausolleum of Mausollos. We could also easily purchase the techs to build the Pyramids or the Oracle. Having said that, I would support the Great Library in Civatonia (hmm...in the game it's Civantonia) or Styx.

It looks like the AI will probably research map making, philosophy, mathematics, and possibly polytheism before code of laws, so I would consider researching that and then republic.

Getting the hoplite done, then Great Library is fine with me. That hoplite will be used to guard the gates of the Great Library. :)

I've heard soemone other than me say Styx. I know I'd loose, but might be worth polling :)

Or not, as everyone else has said Civatonia.

Civatonia
Styx

Abstain

EDIT: You know, I think I might've origanally thought to name the city Civfantonia. Somehow letters got jumbled. At anyrate, I'll ask for a change next turnchat. Hey, some cities go through subtle name changes throughout history. ;)

You know, I could understand with 20+ cities not listing them all, but with only 4, I don't see why we shouldn't just list them all just to make sure.

Place it in the capital! Aristole came to our capital for a reason, did you see him pop up in Civantonia?
It is only right that are glorious capital hold the Great Library, we don't want to anger Aristotle ;)

Plus I don't want to leave town for the finest selection of books :D

Citizens, how can we consider any other course of action but to build this Great Library in Olympus, where our civilization was born! We can better defend our capital against the greedy Germans, who already show themselves to be a dangerous foe. They have warred with both Rome and France, apparently in the pursuit of Iron. Building the Great Library so close to their borders is like waving a haunch of zebra in front of a pride of lions.

All our cities need to be included in the referendum on where Aristotle should build this Great Wonder.

Build it in The Augean Stables!! We are currently a bunch of uncultured, illiterate, wild horsemen. Give us not just a library, but The Great Library, and we will be on par culturally with all the cities of the world. Build the Great Library in the best city of Fanatikos, The Augean Stables.

(maybe there will be tips on how to clean up all the horse $h!t in some of those books)

Yes, it is mine. I may not have time to post a poll during the day, but should be able to get one up and running tonight.

If the populace is antsy, then feel free to post one in my stead. Just remember to include all five possible cities, as well as an option to use Aristotle for something else.

The GL is the most beneficial, IMO. I wouldn't run zero research but I would run minimal research (unless we want to beeline towards the Republic or Monarchy).

As to where to build the GL, either Styx or the soon-to-be-formed Priapos make the most sense. Although we haven't decided on what victory condition to pursue - and although it's unlikely we'll attempt any cultural victory - should we decide to go for a 20K cultural victory, either of those two cities would be the best choices.

Sep 06, 2005, 08:06 AM
could someone please make a poll? i would, but seeing as my city will be one of the choices, i don't know if i'd be able to make it impartial enough for it to pass polling standards...

Augean Stables...Augean Stables for the Great Library...Augean Stables for GL...

You have a city called Priapos? nice ;) Probably the people of Priapos will be involved in other interests and not literature, so you shouldnt build the library there
