In pre-2K versions of Windows, open \WIndows\system.ini in Notepad, find the line shell=explorer.exe and change it to shell=progman.exe.

In 2K and XP, run regedit.exe, go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion Winlogon", find the shell option, change it from explorer.exe to progman.exe.

WindowsBlinds skins the desktop.
YzShadow adds a drop shadow to all the windows and makes all drop-down menus slightly transparent.
Rainlander is the calander thing.

My FF VII start's perfectly under XP, although it used to crash under XP when i got to the Chocobo part of disc 1. Although the game worked perfectly back when i bought it from Denmark 1998.

When the game started to crash more frequantly, i had a look at different Final Fantasy VII sites, looking for a patch to fix the problem and i came across this.

After i installed the 3d card update and Chocobo patch for XP, the game has worked perfectly ever since.

Oh, and sorry for the threadjack. :)

EDIT: Just had a look at that site again and it seems like they no longer have the 3d card patch for the game. Also i installed a Final Fantasy general Update patch that made the game more likely to work with XP. I have both patches (3d card & general update) on my HD, i'll send them to you in a pm.

I think it has to do with the skin set.

I have a real funny desktop wallpaper I encountered when testing a feature of a Star Wars level I've been creating. Only problen is, I'm having a little trouble seeing it. My resolution is 1152 X 864, but I have three whole rows of icons! It's getting kinda annoying, so I'm going to begin the arduous task of organizing it. Just so you can see what I mean:

copies are not shortcuts. It may save considerable disk space to make shortcuts instead of copies.

Like Fetus, I keep mine to a bare minimum.

I have:

Firefox
WMP
Recycle Bin
Downloads (everything off of the net goes here)
And Konfabulator (I don't need it, but when I go to four icons it feels too weird for my liking, so I keep a token one there at all times).

And then I have a Konfabulator weather widget, and did have a calendar too, but it vanished. It says its still there but it aint :hmm:.

I find it far easier to just go to the start menu, which has everything I need (a few more shortcuts immediately, and then everything else too) than to have to search all over my desktop.

Files shouldn't be stored on desktop. Only shotcuts.

/Dont have a pic of my desktop to show, but a while ago I got fed up with my desktop being clutered with stuff I never used so I decided to set it to hide icons. Niw I use a task bar. Very nice

My desktops are both cluttered, I put all my shortcuts to games and useful programs on there. The one I'm on now sort of looks like North America, with a gap (the atlantic) between the icons and then Africa is on the right.

I used to have a cluttered desktop, then I just put a folder named "Desktop!" in, put in subfolders for Anime, Games, Applications, Wallpapers etc. as well as shortcuts to My Pictures/Music etc.
Simply move things into the folder and delete what you don't need. If things don't want to be deleted, go into Safe Mode and delete them there.

I bought Windowblinds, it came with it, but you might also be able to get it with the free version (but i'm so glad I got the full one).

It's called Pearlthane, and there are more customisations about my system.

From Left to Right (The Mac Face activates the Start Funtion in Windows, The Dashboard Icon brings up a flyout menu with folders to my Konfabulator and DesktopX Wigets, The Stamp brings up Thunderbird, The Compass brings up Firefox, Trillian (needs no explanation :p), mIRC (Needs no explanation :p), OpenOffice.org flyout window with different OpenOffice programs, Microsoft Train Simulator, MSTS Editor, iTunes, Calender Docket, Shortcut to Control Panel,)

A little description:

Top Right - general computer links. The two blurred out folders are for web design (didn't want the names to be seen, they are private).

Konfabulator. Anologue clock and weather.. you can set it to any city in the world i think. Very useful - give full week report, and the clocks jus nice an cool :)

the pic is of the pool where I work. I scanned it, added some (a lot of) color, and stylized it. I attached the source pics, of the original scan, and then of the touch up before blur. I have to say, I'm kinda proud of my work :smug: (comparing the two, doesn't the original look like a dog peed on it? :p I also made a more realistic touch-up, not attached)

The program is called "sysmetrix". It's actually not that useful. It just looks cool. I got it from "www.wincustimize.com". I usually get my desktops from the Hubble telescope webpage. I don't remember where that "desktop" comes from.
