View Full Version : Leaders
CivFan91 Sep 11, 2005, 04:56 PM If this was already posted, I apologize. :)
It would be nice if there were two leaderheads per nation: One if you select Male, and one if you play as a Female. So, Cleopatra can be the Female Egyptian, and Ramsees is the Male Egyptian. I like Egypt, but don't play it because Cleo is so ugly... :egypt:
SuperBeaverInc. Sep 11, 2005, 05:11 PM Hatsheput is the Egypt leader in Civ IV, not Cleo, so don't worry :p
Certainly an interesting idea, but who would the female leaders for Aztecs, Inca, Mongols, and Mali be?
Aussie_Lurker Sep 11, 2005, 08:21 PM I think the solution is to simply have a minimum of 2 leaders per civ, and have gender dependant on who you can find. So, for instance, Egypt could have at least 1 male and female leader, because we know the nation had one of each. France and Germany, however, may prove a lot more difficult-instead having at least 2 MALE leaders in each case (as we know France does!)

Aussie_Lurker.
apatheist Sep 11, 2005, 08:59 PM I'm sure it would be an easy mod to come up with leaders. I figure after a few months, you'll be able to download many leaders for every civ.
Mrdie Sep 11, 2005, 11:30 PM Uh..not every single Nation in the world had a great female leader (Or female leader at all for that matter)..so..uh..we would have to settle for something like this...

NOOO!!!!!!!
Now you have to admit that would be pretty scary. :D
"Greetings, I am Eleanor Roosevelt of the Americans! Has your civilization discovered Plastic Surgery??"

I was thinking the exact same thing. well Every time I play with my fiance, it's kind of annoying playing online with a male name and your some russian fat women. haha thats funny.
CivFan91 Sep 12, 2005, 06:23 PM You can make up a name for all I care. Just give us the option, and REMOVE THE TRANSVESTITE CLEO!!!
Commodore Sep 15, 2005, 04:09 AM IIRC, didn't they do this very same thing in Civ II. I would definitely like to see more options for leaders.
@Mrdie: What a coincidence, she was the American female leader in Civ II.
Titankid Sep 15, 2005, 06:28 AM I think it's a really good idea, & for the aztecs, mongols ect.. Most of these nations are polythestic. So simply use gods & goddess' as was done in civ II. Babylon for instance, Ishtari(sp) is the babylonian goddess of love, not a leader. If anyone were to post a list of the civ 4 civs I would give you male & female leaders for all civs if you would like I think it's a good idea though. & also.. why did the replace Cleo w/ her?? I mean if you were to replace her w/ Ramses or something fine, but Cleo was the most powerful & most well known egyptian leader.
Crayton Sep 15, 2005, 10:05 AM They probably didn't want a Greek representing Egypt.
If each civ has 2 leaders (which would be "fair") then some of the leaders will have duplicate traits. There are 28 combinations of traits possible yet, this proposal calls for 36 leaders. I for one don't mind too much because having 28 types of leaders is quite enough to make me happy. On the other hand, if Pericles and Hatsheput have the same characteristics it would be like having twin civs in the same game.
Xen Sep 15, 2005, 10:40 AM sory to to burst ye bebuble, but women rulers were such in the minority that even out of the existing civs, your not going to be able to find any good female rulers- in several cases no actual female rulers at all; just women who had alot of influence on thier husbands, which is an absurd base to make a leader on.
sydhe Sep 15, 2005, 02:22 PM If you're willing to combine Babylon and Assyria, Semiramis (Sammur-amit) could be a female leader. She's partly legendary, but that shouldn't be a problem after Conquests had Gilgamesh.
Israelite9191 Sep 15, 2005, 02:37 PM While it is true that some civs would not have real candidates for female leaders, the Mongols do have several candidates. The men in the Mongol empire were rulers only on the battlefield, at home, the women ran the country. There was one particularly important female Mongol ruler, but I cant remember her name at the moment. If someone would like to look that up, it woudl be a real help.
CivFan91 Sep 15, 2005, 07:50 PM Even if they aren't "leaders" as TitanKid said, they can be goddesses if need be. I just want to pick and choose, because Spain would be cool, and I'm not interested, because Isabella looks ugly. I'm not saying you have to remove Cleo, just make her look better, please! Anyhow, if we get a choice, that'd be cool.
BTW, I was about to ask if something was wrong, but now I know what... THE MODERATORS REMOVED THE POST COUNT?!? I may be a "Chieftain", but I took pride in my posts!
Titankid Sep 16, 2005, 03:27 AM There was one particularly important female Mongol ruler, but I cant remember her name at the moment..
Probably Sorghaghtani Beki... But at any rate, there are possible female leaders for everyone. Mind you i can't spell these worth a crap..haha
The Persians~Schazarade~
The Mongols~Sorghaghtani Beki~
The Babylonians~I****ari~
The Greeks~Hippoltya~Athena~
The Romans~Livia~Diana~Venus~
The Americans~Susan B. Anthony~Hillary Clinton~ lol
The Egyptians~Cleopatra~
The Japanese~Armasuta~
The Chinese~Quan Yin~
The Indians~Indiriah Ghandi~
The French~Joan of Arc~Marie Antwonette~

The list goes on, I don't know all of the Civ 4 civilizations, but it is not hard to make female leaders & I think it is an excellent Idea
t0mme Sep 16, 2005, 04:40 AM The Romans~Livia~Diana~Venus~
The last two you name are gods. I suggest Julia Agrippina, the mother of Nero, she pulled quite a few strings in the background.
Crayton Sep 16, 2005, 11:46 AM Kublai Khan's wife, Condi.
Why do we WANT a female leader for each civ?
Sullla Sep 16, 2005, 11:47 AM I'm sure that Firaxis would have liked to include 2 leaders for every civ. However, creating the animated leaderheads involves a great deal of time and effort from their artists, not to mention a high cost. Civ4 does have a budget of X amount of dollars (whatever that is) beyond which it can't spend.
Now I'm sure the core fans of the game don't really whether the leaders have modern graphics or not, but the large numbers of casual fans do, and Firaxis would be slammed by reviewers if they released a game with a dozen backwards/outdated leaderheads. For practical reasons, they just can't do that. Things aren't as simple as in Civ2, where all you had to do was add in a name and a static picture that even fans could easily create with a couple hour's work in Paint. Not to mention that every civ and leader were identical in Civ2; no unique units or civ traits.
We're still getting 18 civs and 26 leaders, which is more than Civ3 had in the release version. In fact, even with TWO expansions Civ3 only has 31 leaders! That should be plenty to keep everyone busy for a few months. :)
Crayton Sep 16, 2005, 12:30 PM My guess is that the first expansion will include 1 additional leader trait and 8 new leaders. This way there still won't be any duplicate leaders. 36 leaders will be more than even Civ3 had!
CivFan91 Sep 16, 2005, 11:03 PM That would be cool... create a 450 X 450 map and see 36 civs kill each other, then mop up the mess.
HourlyDaily Sep 17, 2005, 08:47 PM Can I just say that you should not choose a female leader as one of two unless they deserve it.
And for the second part of this debate - I also don't think it matters if there are leaders with duplicate traits. If a leader deserves to be classified with a certain two traits, then that should be what they get. Its not like you will be playing a game against 17 Organised and Spiritual trait combos.
CivFan91 Sep 17, 2005, 10:12 PM The Female and Male traits can be the same, just alternate pics. That's all I want besides what they're already doing for Civ IV.
Crayton Sep 17, 2005, 10:42 PM Duplicate traits won't be terrible and it will be easy to differentiate between two such leaders (because they have pictures). I just wish that it didn't have to come to that and that each combination could have one leader assigned to it.
On the other hand, it doesn't look like the game will have more than 6 traits, meaning 15 combinations. 26 or so leaders means that most combinations will be repeated. I just hope this doesn't remove the uniqueness factor that each civ-leader should have.
