View Full Version : Friend and I argued about Papal States in Civ V
Mrdie Sep 17, 2005, 11:26 PM Well, here it goes. I jokingly said to my athiest friend that " Civ V has been announced and the new Civ is the Papal States " and he replyed " Really? Nice. " and I was like " ... "
I argued with him a few minutes if the Papal States should be in Civ V or etc, basicly, he said that they should be in, and it ended with both of us agreeing that it would be interesting. What do you think of this idea? We already thought up of the Leaders :D Pope Leo The Great and Pope Innocent III..and..uh..yeah..sorry if this is a cruddy topic.

If Papal States included, also Andorra could be...Yeah I know, that is one of the reasons I would not want it in any Civ game.
Titankid Sep 18, 2005, 01:20 AM It would be an interesting twist, however it is not symetrical to the game of civ. This kind of Idea works great in games like Medival Total War, & could probably even work in AoE if they tried, however what would the papacy do in Civ? In civ you can have France's best friend being Arabia, & All of Europe @ war w/ each other. A papacy would just be in the way in Civ it has no direct purpose, Also the only way this would work, is if Demonation & Conquest victories were both eliminated.
HourlyDaily Sep 18, 2005, 04:01 AM The idea shouldn't be dismissed right away. Of course other civs should take priority first however;
If you had a Renaissance scenario you would have the HRE, Byzantium, the Lombard League and a few other civs, one led by Charles of Anjou, with the Papacy pursuing some sort of separate tech tree whereby they try to build their authority and then invest it it someone else. Don't know for sure - but there is room for 'specialist' civs in scenarios for sure.
Atrebates Sep 21, 2005, 10:19 AM Papacy would only really be used in mods or scenarios, it removes the possibility of researching a certain religion.
hmm... Actually it could be interesting if you had religion barbarians (bad name) i.e. main civs can't research religions and are influenced by missionaries of said religious propogator or ally themselves with a religion. The weakness of the religious states would be countered by the fact that their mates would murder you if invasion took place.

You could have Conquest etc eliminated just for that civ ... which is I think what you meant but I wanted to be sure :) It would be nice to have a civ that plays radically differently from other civs. You could have a special gameplay for the Papacy so that it might even have special, unique, altogether different victory conditions and ways of playing (like it gets to excommunicate, achieves a religious instead of cultural victory, etc.). If you are playing as a civ OTHER THAN the Papacy you could have it so that the Papacy magically reappears in a random Christian city if all its cities get destroyed. If Christianity is completely eliminated, then you could have it not ever reappear (or maybe have it reappear again after the tech Dead Sea Scrolls is discovered -- this is my idea for a tech, not something in Civ 4)

Yeah I know, that is one of the reasons I would not want it in any Civ game.
Yeah, cuz we all know what a drag Andorra has been on our plans for planetary unity... Them and San Marino, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Vatican City, and let's not forget the ringleader in all this, Luxembourg. If we topple Luxembourg, the rest will fall into place and then the world can unify in peace, I'm sure of it.
Crayton Sep 25, 2005, 09:25 AM The Papal States would fit in a Europe Scenario stretching from 1300-1900. I've forgotten when the Papal States became independent of the Frankish kings, but Rome was finally conquered in 1871.
Israelite9191 Sep 25, 2005, 05:55 PM Mabey there could be a set of specialized civs for each trait. The Papal States for religious, teh Hanseatic League for commercial, the Polynesians for seafaring, etc. Could add another element to game play.
Legionary37 Sep 25, 2005, 08:02 PM I like that idea Israelite9191. It would add a new dimension to the game, I think.
Of course, we'd need more civs (On the map), or else we'd end up with just 2 or 3 civs in each leauge, or everyone in one leauge.
Crayton Sep 25, 2005, 10:10 PM I think we can mod these 'barbarian' civs to our liking and be able to create such mini-civs.
