View Full Version : make railroads optional please

I know they already decided to go with infinite movement railroads and there's no way they're going to change it this late ... SO, I'm hoping that they will at least make them optional via an in-game native menu ... or at the very least make it possibly to easily mod them out (or give them a different movement) :)

EDIT:
Apparently what was stated by someone in another railroad thread was not accurate or certain and there has been nothing OFFICIAL on an official website that says railroads will have infinite movement ... so there is still hope! :goodjob:

I'm sure it will be easy to disable railroads. Making it an option from an in-game menu would not be a good idea. It would imply that they thought that having the railroads disabled resulted in a decent game. It would also be hard to justify why they built in an option for that particular thing rather than any of the dozens of other pet peeves.

It Should be easy to mod though (at least taking railroads out altogether)

Where did you here that they were going with infinite rail? I missed that.

I think someone said it in one of the railroad threads, that they were not going to change it. Maybe they changed their mind since then or maybe the person who reported this had inaccurate information. If anyone hears any different or new news please tell us pronto!

I can assure you that Infinite RR movement has not-I repeat not been confirmed or denied in any official site or review. Until it is, then I tend to feel that all bets are off.

i have not heard one word mentioned about road or railroads except that they wont give production bonuses to tiles with them, other then that nothing else is known about them

Heck, all I have heard about is that there will be no commerce from roads-they haven't said anything, to the best of my recollection, regarding hammers or food. I, for one, would not have a problem with roads and/or rail bringing in a bonus hammer and/or food if there was a relevent tile improvement through which it was running (i.e. a road running through a tile with a production boosting improvement would add +1 hammers, wheras one running through an irrigated/farmland tile would add +1 food.)

True, they only said commerce, but it would not make sense to leave the food/production bonuses, since the stated reason for removing commerce bonus was to stop roads and rails built on every square, so to leave the other bonuses would be against the logic of removing the commerce bonus as people would build roads and rails in every square to get the food/production bonuses.

If railroads did not use instant movement that would imply that traveling across a country by rail would take several years. And quite frankly, that would be even stranger.

I've said it once, and I will say it again-Infinite Movement, Limited Capacity-that is the only way I can see in which rail can retain its 'realism', yet also have greater strategic implications for use.

That's a good idea. Never thought of it.

Well if they took away the tile-production bonuses for road and rails, that will do absolute wonders for the amount of garbage on the screen. The screenshots I've seen so far, I can't tell for sure if they support this or not, since they could have been edited (like using the Civ Editor to build them). I'm sure Aussie's explained his idea more fully elsewhere, but based on the tagline "infinite move, limited capacity", I don't know what you'd want to base the limit on. If it's number of railed tiles, then we're back to the same problem, but I'm sure he's actually got something better in mind.
