I am at work right now but so excited about Civ 4 I wanted to ask this question since I cant search for the answer at the moment. With all of the great custom mades units made by people here for Civ 3, I take it they will not be usuable for Civ 4, and thus we have to wait for them all to be recreated?

Yes, that is a distinct possibility.

Not a possibility, but a fact. Civ 3 units are 2D, Civ 4 will be 3D. However those creators who used programs like Poser might be able to add their initial graphics, before they were converted to 2D, if they happened to save their work at that point. Which I strongly doubt.

Well I wouldn't be to concerned about it. As long as there are players with a creative inclination, there'll be units and other graphics made for the game. It might take a little while before we start seeing any but in a year or two, there should be a pretty good collection starting to build up.
