Archaeologists studying the tomb of China's first emperor say he may have been buried with his state treasure.
A magnetic scan of the site has revealed that a large number of coins are lying in the unopened tomb.

Emperor Qin's mausoleum, near the former imperial capital Xian, became famous in 1976 with the discovery of 8,000 terracotta soldiers guarding it.

The emperor ruled China from 221-210BC and is believed to have spent decades building his immense underground tomb.

Tomb unopened

The burial mound covering the tomb has remained largely untouched by archaeologists for fear of damaging the treasures it contains.

But the magnetic scan of the area, conducted by Chinese and German archaeologists, revealed new details about the structure of the mausoleum and a "remarkable amount of coins," the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The agency quoted Michael Petzet, president of the International Council on Monuments and Sites Coins, as saying that the horde might be the "state treasury" in the underground palace.

Mr Petzet said that coins from the time of Emperor Qin's time were most likely to be made of bronze, with some silver coins too.

However, Mr Petzet was adamant that until archaeologists knew better how to protect the coins, they should be left where they were.

"Excavation sometimes means destruction," Xinhua quoted Mr Petzet as saying. "Let them sleep underground. It's safer. No excavation should be done for fun or curiosity."

They've found it? Yay!

Wonder what would it take for me to join the excavation and pocket a few of them coins? :mischief:

Interesting.

@Dann: If I read the article right, there won't be an excavation because the conditions outside the tomb would destroy the coins. :p I'm sure you'll find other get-rich-quick schemes. :D

BTW: I love your sig

Nope. This isn't Egypt. :p

Sure. If you get caught. IF. ;)

Anyway the latest news sayz the deposit is something else. Not ancient coins. A premature earlier announcement by the excavators? Or are they now covering something up and saying this to discourage poachers?

As long as you weren't stupid enough to voice your plans to plunder the tomb of the first emperor on an internet forum, they'll never find you :smug:

As for the curse, I have actually heard that some of the archaeolgists (the Chinese ones predominantly) are also hesitant about entering the tomb because of a supposed curse.

From a purely logical view. it would be a cunning deception designed to discourage would be tomb raiders from plundering the buerial site.

Should the tomb be disturbed then great misfortune will befall the country, Something which must have "grown" and entered the chinese physcology for my generations. It also takes advantage of Chinese culture. Pretty successful considering the hesitation to explore it

EDIT: And all those chinese martial arts horror movies dont help either. :D
Oh OH the first emperor has come alive again and eats brains BRAINSSS mmmmm zombis
