(For those of no artistic talent whatsoever)

Many of us who would like to make some unit have no idea how to make those 3d graphics. back in the day of civ2, I could just handle making units with microsoft paint. :p Now it's a whole new barrel of fish.

Can I just nab a unit graphic from civ1 and prop it in there to represent, say a speical tank until either someone with artistic talent makes a graphic for the mod or are there some cheapass 3d graphics from other games on the net that con just be put in there?

The units will have to be in 3D format, hopefully something standard. The good news is that it's easy to use 2D graphics by pasting them onto a transparent billboard as a static or animated texture. Once we find out what file format the game uses, and therefore what program(s) to use, billboard units could be mass-produced easily.

Billboard units could serve as temp units until a 3d version could be worked up.
