View Full Version : Own6 Cultural Victory
Own Oct 24, 2005, 02:03 PM Another Civ4 SG, we're experimenting the new cultural victory. I won't have the game until 3-7 days, so let's start this when everyone signed up has the game and has played a couple SP games to get the hang of it.
Civ- America
Don't know enough about the settings yet.
Roster-
6 spots open.
Noldodan Oct 24, 2005, 03:50 PM Civ IV seems like as good a time as any to get my first Cultural victory in. My copy arrives Nov. 3, in case you're interested.
Own Oct 24, 2005, 03:59 PM Is that a sign up?
Chieftess Oct 24, 2005, 04:07 PM May I suggest Arabia or Egypt for culture? :)
Own Oct 24, 2005, 06:55 PM Thanks Cheiftess, I just chose America because they're a featured civ we know about, but that +2 culture per city looks nice.
Tragedy alert- I estimate civ4 will arrive at my house at 12:00 saturday, but I've got a birthday party to go to at 2:00  . Oh well, I'll still have fun :) .
Noldodan Oct 24, 2005, 07:46 PM Is that a sign up?
Aye, 'tis. And if we want creative, I say we go Roman.
Formula51 Oct 24, 2005, 09:11 PM I'm in. :)
Leha Oct 24, 2005, 10:37 PM Own, can you please reserve a slot for me (a last one).
I'm still not sure my PC will cope with civIV well. Though it seems OK by minimum reqs, still I'm a bit alarmed.
Own Oct 25, 2005, 01:07 PM Ok

Formula51 Oct 25, 2005, 05:49 PM Ok, I should be getting Civ4 by tomorrow, so the roster is fine to me.
Talamane Oct 26, 2005, 08:44 PM I've been lurking forever on the C3 SG forum. I would love to get started playing instead of lurking.
Talamane Oct 27, 2005, 10:12 PM I am working on my first SP game as India/Ghandi (Spiritual/Industrious) at the Noble difficulty level. Things are going well. I've built a lot of wonders , got a lot of Great Artists, but so far, no Great Prophet, and no Shrine. My neighbor is G Khan, and two of his cities have converted to my religion (Buddhism). Tech pace is rather slow. I chose the epic speed, so things dont happen too fast. :D
elderotter Oct 27, 2005, 10:18 PM May I suggest Arabia or Egypt for culture? :)
I am playing Mali and doing well with Culture. Capital has 50k culture in 1866 on epic game. from what it says 50/75k I might get a cultural with a 1 city win...not sure but will keep posted.
Leha Oct 28, 2005, 07:17 AM My copy will arrive only on 10-NOV-2005
Those lucky of you who got the game - how's the game, good?
Formula51 Oct 28, 2005, 02:13 PM Never mind, I can only get it next week. :(
Talamane Oct 28, 2005, 04:59 PM The game is, in a word, fantastic. It's everything any civver could ever ask of a sequel on a great game franchise.
So many things are going to change in SG's. Remember how often one could read in an SG thread "city name" is set to build a barracks, can be changed. Well, that wont be happening quite that way anymore. I remember a lot of SG's where every AI was furious. Well, that won't be happening quite that way anymore, either. The walkthrough by Sulla is an eye-opener. For those who dont have the game, i heartily recommend it.
Own Oct 28, 2005, 05:01 PM I can't wait to get it!
Leha Oct 29, 2005, 12:01 AM Where can I find this walkthrough?
Talamane Oct 29, 2005, 03:46 AM @ Leha
Where can I find this walkthrough?

Leha Oct 29, 2005, 10:59 AM Thanks, Talamane :)
Formula51 Oct 29, 2005, 12:40 PM Yeah, I've read it, and it seems so far that aquiring resources are key.
Own Nov 06, 2005, 02:40 PM Who will start us off? I have black map, which I'll try to fix ASAP, in the meantime someone can start us off.
Formula51 Nov 06, 2005, 07:59 PM I'm up in 3 other SG's, so not me.
Panth Nov 07, 2005, 12:02 AM If there's still a slot open, I'd like to try this. I've never done an SG but I've read most of them on here and a lot from CivIII.
What level is this at? I've just finished my 2nd game up - 2 for 2 so far :) 1st was a warlord domination, 2nd was time victory on noble. I was set to launch the spaceship but my nuclear reactor blew up destroying my work on the last piece 2 turns before it was done
Own Nov 07, 2005, 01:10 PM I don't know the difficulty, at the time I started this they were unknown, so I'll say, Noble.
Care to start us out? Will have card on Wedn-Thurs
Panth Nov 07, 2005, 03:06 PM I guess I could start it up tonight, sure. Starts seem to not be a strong point for me in IV thusfar, but it sounds like we're all new here
Questions. . .
-Where does the roster stand?-reading through, I'm not sure who's in and who's not.
-What map size/type/speed/how many rivals?
And we're going with America for a cultural victory on Noble, correct?
And the SG questions. . .
How many turns per person?
How fast for "I got it?"
How fast to play?
Own Nov 08, 2005, 01:11 PM And we're going with America for a cultural victory on Noble, correct?
Correct :) .
20 for the first person then 10 after that, and in the late game if it's taking too long, then 5 each.
I'm not strict on got its or playing, as long as it's moving.
Panth Nov 08, 2005, 02:13 PM Well then, if there are no further wishes as far as startup, I'll get one started up tonight. Haven't played the Americans yet, so that'll be nice. I certainly hope that we don't get neighbored up with Montezuma though - in the 3 games I've played so far (still doing the 3rd), he's been right next door to me and declared on me disrupting my builder lifestyle :p
I haven't managed a cultural victory yet (due mostly to Monty) so this should be fun. One city @ 50k isn't too terribly difficult it seems, but 3 is going to be tricky because that means that there needs to be 3 soild, productive cities that must be dedicated almost solely to culture building. In the 3 games I've done now, it seems that getting more than about 4 cities built is difficult without a good deal of battle. Battle hampers culture building severely as you are forced to build military rather than pretty buildings to make people better :)
For this reason, I think I'll go with a large map to maybe fit a few more cities in. I'm not sure about map type - I think my games have all been continent so I'll explore some different map types and see what looks good.
Expect something tonight [presuming I can sort out screenshots & turnlogs.]
Own Nov 08, 2005, 02:20 PM I still don't know how cultural VC works, three cities @ 50k? Or three adding up to 150k?
Panth Nov 08, 2005, 03:44 PM According to the manual (and in-game as well, I think), it says "3 cities at Legendary status," which is "50,000 Culture at normal speed."
I don't think it's like III where you can have 1 city with X culture or a total of Y culture - Pretty sure it's just 3 Legendary cities.
Own Nov 08, 2005, 03:53 PM That seems mildly difficult, a good challenge I think.
MeteorPunch Nov 08, 2005, 03:57 PM I played a 3CC culture game and have 2 tips for you from what I learned.
First, whenever you get the culture slider technology, use it a lot. I didn't realize it was there until the game was almost over, but it helps a ton at the end where I didn't have much to research.
Second, like in Civ 3 there comes a point on the tech tree where there's just not much culture buildings left to build. You'll definitely want to reevalute things, maybe focusing on health techs like medicine or maybe getting your defenses up and turning science off completely to just build culture rapidly.
Hope that helps a bit.
Own Nov 08, 2005, 04:16 PM Thanks Meteor Punch! :)
DaveShack Nov 08, 2005, 05:42 PM Another great way to build culture is to get a tech that allows artist specialists (Drama I think?), build the requisite building (theater) then max out artists in every city. If that's the only specialist you use, you'll almost certainly get a Great Artist every time, and then each of those can build a Great Work which is worth 4000 culture!
Panth Nov 08, 2005, 06:56 PM Thanks lurkers :)
MP, I have have already become fast friends with the culture slider. I found it a true savior when conquering to get that first border expansion up in newly acquired territories since you frequently get a city with ONLY THE CITY SQUARE and no workable tiles! It's probably not going to be a huge issue in this situation as a couple Cpt probably won't be a make-or-break deal but still, every little bit helps, especially when combined with any (or several) of the percentage-increase deals.
Dave: agreed that artists will probably be key. For this reason alone, I think the Pyramids should probably be a target build as it allows unlimited artists, and (I think) earlier than would otherwise be feasible.
I'm off to start now. We'll see how it shakes out :)
Panth Nov 09, 2005, 10:47 AM I am done, but I need to get the screenshots together and post everything. Do screens need to be hosted on someplace like photobucket or directly here?
Noldodan Nov 09, 2005, 01:37 PM Feel free to upload any screenies here. There's a link to the upload serever at the bottom.
Own Nov 09, 2005, 01:41 PM In the Civ3 Succession games forum, there's a sticky on how to upload save games and screenshots.
Panth Nov 09, 2005, 02:20 PM Got it. Thanks.
I took a ton of screens so it's going to take a few minutes to integrate them into my turnlog. I just got another pohotbucket account as it seems easier. I gotta get back to work now. I'll get another break in a couple hours and compile & post it all.
First-timer here . . . sorry. :crazyeye:
Panth Nov 09, 2005, 02:41 PM Own VI Succession Game Log
Prologue
The powers that be having decided that We, The People shall heretofore be known as the Americans who wish to rule the world through our vast and mezmerizing culture, I have chosen Roosevelt to lead us. He is organized, as is his counterpart, however it is my belief that Roosevelt's industriousness shall serve our purposes well. [Discount wonders and forges sounds nifty.]
Map is 5 continents, large, with 9 rivals.
Chapter 1: The Dawn of Time
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg
This looks like a beautiful place to start. 6 minable hills, 3 of those with gold; at least 2 high-food squares; fresh water. Is marble and/or stone too much to ask for?
Turn 0: Found in place. Move warrior to the hut he started above. Pop mysticism. This is good. We started with agri & fishing so we could feed ourselves and now we have religious roots as well. See another hut East of DC along with more gold and a cow. Our capitol's radius will have 2 goldhills, 1 grasshill, wheat, and cow. Add to that the lake squares and floodplains and we should have high pop, decent production and a lot of cash. []Hindsight comment: 1 square north may have been better. Who knew?[]
I'm a bit shaky on starting research options. There are just so many directions to go. As I noted, we have the capacity to farm & fish when we get a worker. I think masonry is important so we can try for Pyramids but we won't building that immediately so I opt for meditation in an attempt to snag Buddhism.
Set to build warrior. Send warrior to 2nd hut (6 turns).
Turn 1: 3960BC : nada
Turn 2: 3920BC : "
Turn 3: 3880BC: "
Turn 4: 3840BC: "
Turn 5: 3800BC: Borders expand. Get $68 from the hut. Not what I was hoping for, but hey. Gift horse, mouth.
Looks like probably a lot of desert to the north, woods to the east, and probably the south end of the continent right below us.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg
Turn 6: 3760BC: While I'd like to expolre the woods, I want to make sure that is, in fact, the bottom of our continent. I figure stepping on the hill will reveal enough to tell me.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg
Yup. That's the southern shore. Note: there is a crab to the west of our southern tip. It would be out of working range of any potential southern city, but we could get into our borders anyway as a resource. Note also there is land there 2 squares away. Looking again, I think if we do a southern city it should be on the southeast sqaure to get the 2 hills in range.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg
Turn 7: 3720BC: Nuthin'
Turn 8: 3680BC: Warrior built. Stonehenge started. It is a very culturally powerful early wonder. I was going to do 1 more warrior here but started looking at the city screen and calculating out. With our wonder bonus, even at only 2hpt we get it in 40. We grow in 3 with current settings at which point I can swap tiles to work a floodplains and goldmine for 4hpt and a huge research boost. that should give us Stonehenge in about 25, and probably sooner as we should grow again before that. I would normally worry about leaving the city unguarded but we have only 2 sides open and good vision of those areas with no threats in sight.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0008.jpg
Warrior1 goes east. Warrior2 heads NW. More gold to the East
Turn 9: 3640BC: Somebody beat us to Buddhism by 1 turn. Warrior1 SE finds southeastern corner of continent. Warrior2 continues NW.
Tun 10: 3600BC: Meditation learned. We should really have religion. Polytheism -> Monotheism could nab us Hindu & Judaism. Priesthood -> Code of Laws could nab us Confuscianism. We'll be getting a big research boost next turn with the tile swap. Somebody is surely close to Poly already so I'll play it safer and go for Confuscious. With 10 civs, better one than none. Nevermind . . .we'd need writing first too. I'll gamble and hope we can at least nab Judaism.
Warriors move. Bears guarding a hut to the NW.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0009.jpg
Panth Nov 09, 2005, 02:42 PM Turn 11: 3560BC: Bears move out of view. Both warriors move NE. Horses nest to that hut. DC grows. Tiles swapped. Man, that is growing slower than I thought it would. Mono research goes from 11 to 8 though.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0010.jpg
Turn 12: 3520BC: Wolves spotted NE of NW warrior. He heads towards hut. Putty tats spotted by east warrior in the desert. The desert doesn't look as bad as I first thought. Some decent land up here it appears.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0011.jpg
Turn 13: 3480BC: Hut gives exp - good since there's critters out here. Found cows in the middle of the eastern desert. Interesting.
Turn 14: 3440BC: Uuurm . . .yeah.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0012.jpg
Promote NW dude to woodsman2 - good thing since I found the bears again. Eastern guy finds now 2 lions.
Turn 15: 3400BC: East guy moves into a bad situation but he's in the forest so it should be okay. NW guy checks odds n the bears - with a 50/50 shot I opt to decline and move farther north.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0013.jpg
Turn 16: 3360BC: Both lions attack and die.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0014.jpg
Eastern guy promoted. NW guy keeps heading north. There's wheat and clams in the East by the cow, and cow and clams in the NW. 2 huts visible. I think Eastern guy is going to head home and grab that hut on the way back. I'm getting uncomfortable leaving DC open now. NW guy can be our scout for now.
Turn 17: 3320BC: IBT, NW guy gets attacked by wolves who die. He moves to hut and gets map of the Northwest. Helpful actually, and still no rivals in sight.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0015.jpg
Turn 18: 3280BC: NW guy spots more bears. Fortifies on hill to heal the .2 he lost to the wolves. Other guy pops hut for Animal husbandry. Fantastic. I hate having to research stuff just so workers can do their thing. We can now pasturize these cows and horses when we do get a worker out.
Turn 19: 3240BC:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0016.jpg
We are the founders of Hinduism. Set to Masonry - allows pyramids and monotheism for a stab at Judaism. In teh games I've played so far, I woudl have already been at war but since I see no threat from anywhere, I'm to too worried about military presently. With a culture goal, we need as many religions and wonders as possible. NW guy moves north and finds silver.
Turn 20: 3200BC: NW guy find more silver and some puppies. Note, there are bears in the square directly East of the southern silverhill.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0017.jpg
Wrapup. Well, I hope I haven't screwed anything up too terribly. We are growing incredibly slowly and I really hope Stonehenge was the right choice. It looks liek we've got a lot of land to ourselves and a lot of high production areas. Feel free to bash me about the head and shoulders for any really poor decisions. We've got a lot of land uncovered and a lot to discuss I'm sure.
Own Nov 09, 2005, 02:49 PM Great first turnset! Nice screenies too :) .
Will get card tomorrow...
Panth Nov 10, 2005, 10:05 AM I suppose the save might be helpful
