View Full Version : New Sengoku Mod
ShiroKobbure Oct 25, 2005, 09:23 PM Ok, I know this has been tried a few times, and then dies. However Im working on it now. And I would like some help. So if you think you can help post here or PM me.
What I need:
Someone who knows how to work with cut and paste unit programs
Someone who can help crop and edit a map, maq twiq wont work on my PC
Someone who can help with the text stuff
Beta testers
What I have:
New tech icons and a redone tech tree
New adviser background
Unit list
Civ list
Map, just needs to be cropped
About the mod, This mod starts in the Muramachi period, The provinces of Japan are already there. There are no settlers. Hokkaido is on the map, and I have been thinking of adding the Ryukyu Kingdom since the Shimazu clan did invade them in the 1600s, but Im also thinking of taking them out and just leaving the home islands.
TopGun Oct 25, 2005, 09:42 PM I'll Beta Test!!!! And, I'll do text stuff, too. Unit cut'n'paste takes me way too long (plus I'm still trying to get my aircraft production line going)... so I'll pass on that. But test'n'text, count me in.
ShiroKobbure Oct 25, 2005, 10:06 PM tech tree preview
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/techs.jpg
New Icons
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/techsp.JPG
From right to left:
The Geisha, The Geisha Assassin, Ashigaru, Ninjustsu, Mercenary Conscript, Bushido, Piracy, Chinese Siege Engines, Western Contact, Christianity, Craftsmanship, Katas, Swordsmanship, The Katana, The Sengoku, Issolation
ShiroKobbure Oct 25, 2005, 10:10 PM well the cut and past unit I need is to make the nakamaro horsman unit from the play the world extras into an army unit. So like having him off center. And if you could I would like to have the mon above his head, so each clans king unit would be a mounted samurai with the clans mon. Nothing too hard, but Im sure it just takes too long to make ^ ^;;
ShiroKobbure Oct 25, 2005, 10:13 PM Up and Coming progress
New units
SoG has told me he will make an Odachi unit.
Hikaro Takayama has told me he would make a geisha unit.
New advisers
Im making all Japanese advisers
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 25, 2005, 10:51 PM So the tech tree is one era? The techs would have to be very expensive to comensate.
You may want to separate it into two eras, early and late sengoku. First era could be pre-western contact and second era post maybe. I don't know if you have seen, but I have made about twenty Asian tech icons, most of which could fit this mod. Look here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=109103
and here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=109670
ShiroKobbure Oct 25, 2005, 10:53 PM the sengoku was about 50 years, there isnt that much to reseach.
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 25, 2005, 11:03 PM I suppose. Just giving suggestions. 50 years back then wasn't a big leap technology wise, like today. If you need any ideas let me know.
Takhisis Oct 26, 2005, 09:01 PM I can do:
text
beta testing
possinly help with the tech-tree.
All of this assuming that I´ll get one of those geisha you made
Also, to get to the idea of Japan, I´m listening to Deep Purple: Live in Japan.
I say inmediately you must have wako, amidas, ninjas, ronin archers/spearmen/cavalry/corsairs, more siege units, horse archers, light hosemen, shugenja and yamabushi warrior orders; all the ronin units should have a jumping resource, namely, ronin. Also, ashigaru shouls have a more preponderant role in this scenario.
The Imperial palace at Kyoto, and the Ainu from Hokkaido as a civ.
All ships should be available as transports.
You should also use p´anokson or some other kind of armored ships, like ODa Nobunaga´s.
Takhisis Oct 26, 2005, 09:04 PM Sorry, listening to Evil Louie now.
ShiroKobbure Oct 26, 2005, 09:15 PM um I dont know what deep purple is
the Wako will be a barbian unit. Im not sure why amida would be in the mod?
there will be a ninja. there will be a ronin mercenary unit, that will be a bowman. The siege units will be a catapult, a trabuche, and a cannon. The 2 horse units are a spearman and a bowman. There are no shugenja or yamabushi but there is a sohei, since thats all they have in the play the world extras. To build a mecenary unit you need a ronin resource. the main spearman and gunman are the ashigaru.
the palace at kyoto will have a role in the mod
still thinking about hokkaido, the ainu wont be a civ, since they were never oganized and played no role in any warfare during the sengoku or any war really.
there will probably be only one ship its a transport ship.
turtleships are korean, I dont think the Japanese had an armoured ship.
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 26, 2005, 09:36 PM You should look at the Asian ships thread I made, it should be on page 2 or three of the main creation and customization board shiro.
The Japanese apparently had a few naval vessels. The larger one was produced in limited amounts and was used by the shogun Oda i believe. The smaller one, the Atakabune, was used to invade Korea, and of coarse was crushed by the more powerful and more advanced Korean ships, one type of which was the Turtleship. Both the Japanese ships were made by Aaglo and are on the Unit graphics board.
ShiroKobbure Oct 26, 2005, 09:47 PM there was never a shogun of the oda family. there was few navel battles in the sengoku.
ShiroKobbure Oct 26, 2005, 09:57 PM what do you think of the new military adviser?
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 26, 2005, 09:57 PM read the thread I spoke of Shiro, Odedai apparently is an expert of Asian nautical history in addition to his other talents.
Were Junks used by the Japanese?
ShiroKobbure Oct 26, 2005, 10:00 PM I know odedai is good at ships, but I dont think there is a need to read it for this mod.
I think a junk is just a term for chinese ships
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 26, 2005, 10:13 PM I suppose it doesn't matter much since naval aspect probably won't be much of a factor.
What are the unit lines looking like so far?
ShiroKobbure Oct 26, 2005, 10:34 PM lines are finished
SoG does map twiq work on your PC?
Ogedei_the_Mad Oct 26, 2005, 10:44 PM P'anokson and Turtle Ships are uniquely Korean. ;)
there will probably be only one ship its a transport ship.
turtleships are korean, I dont think the Japanese had an armoured ship.
The Japanese utilized armored gun-bearing ships in the Sengoku Jidai called "Tessen" (aaglo's "Tekkousen" unit). They were huge, hulking ships, far bigger than the standard Atakabune. Tessen were very strong, but their biggest weakness was that they were kind of awkward (because of their hulking size). They are not true "ironclads" since they only had some iron plating on the broadsides. The standard ship classes of this period were Kobaya, Atakabune, Seki Bune (medium-sized ships similar to Atakabune), and O Atakabune (big atakabune; iron-plated ones being "Tessen"). Aaglo's recent units figure in very well here. :)
But you're also right - there weren't that many sea battles in the Sengoku Jidai. Most of it was land-based combat. :) The Takeda, the Mori, and the Oda did have fleets, though. I don't know about the other clans.
ShiroKobbure Oct 26, 2005, 10:56 PM tessen are iron fans, Oatakebune are tekkousen. which means iron armoured ship. There were only 6 made and they were owned by Oda Nobunaga. And were never used in open sea, only rivers.

Ogedei_the_Mad Oct 26, 2005, 11:04 PM tessen are iron fans, Oatakebune are tekkousen. which means iron armoured ship. There were only 6 made and they were owned by Oda Nobunaga. And were never used in open sea, only rivers.
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%94%BB%E5%83%8F:Atakebune2.jpg
"Tessen" is a shortened form of "Tekkousen"; it is the combination of the character "Tetsu" (鉄) and the character "Sen" (kun reading - "fune": 船), thus 鉄船. I don't use Wikipedia since the info there is kind of incomplete; I'm using Stephen Turnbull's book "The Fighting Ships of the Far East." :) Accounts of the battle of Kizugawaguchi refer to O Ataka Bune as "Tessen," so you're right that they're essentially the same thing. Six, as you said, were commissioned by Oda Nobunaga. :)
I apologize if we're getting way off topic here; I always end up talking about ships too much. :p
Yoda Power Oct 27, 2005, 02:32 AM Looks promising:)
Takhisis Oct 27, 2005, 05:51 AM Nonetheless, Wako and ronin ships should go straight into this. Didnīt wako make the chinese close their ports to japanese trade?
Rambuchan Oct 27, 2005, 05:58 AM This is a very dramatic, unique and significant period of history. Good to see someone reworking it (the ninja bug in Firaxis' version was soooo frustrating)! All the best with it and if you need some 'pedia content let me know by PM.
Takhisis Oct 27, 2005, 11:52 AM What ninja bug?
I never used ninjas, jus attacked withg 2-3 armies of Mounted Samurai and also disembarked with armies of Elite Samurai Archers.
ShiroKobbure Oct 27, 2005, 05:11 PM resources
horses, iron, gunpowder
imperial court, sake, fur, dyes, insenses,
buddhist relics, siliver, whales, game
fish, farm animals, wheat, gold, ronin, rice
ShiroKobbure Oct 27, 2005, 05:39 PM if anyone wants to help with the map go here:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=133827
Ogedei_the_Mad Oct 27, 2005, 05:39 PM How does your unit list look like? Will you be using something along the lines of the Firaxis "Sengoku" scenario or will you be using something completely different?
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 27, 2005, 09:49 PM What program?
ShiroKobbure Oct 28, 2005, 12:30 AM this program
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=73990
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 28, 2005, 12:43 AM The map cropper! I've been looking all over for that! Thankyou so much Shiro!
ShiroKobbure Nov 15, 2005, 01:38 PM SoG when can you start making units for the mod?
I found some great music for the mod.
Im still thinking of adding the Ryukyu kingdom, but i think they may come in a later expansion if the mod turns out well.
ShiroKobbure Nov 15, 2005, 02:02 PM anyone have the shogun total war music?
Ogedei_the_Mad Nov 15, 2005, 02:07 PM anyone have the shogun total war music?
I have it on my computer right now. :)
ShiroKobbure Nov 15, 2005, 03:18 PM can you upload the music files ^ ^
also can you print the screen in game so I can see the devision of the provinces on the standard game.
Ogedei_the_Mad Nov 15, 2005, 03:31 PM Which ones do you need? All of the files combined is a full 215 MB. The map in-game is very big so I might have to do several screenshots. Or, if you're willing to wait until Friday or Saturday, I do have a smaller and clearer map containing all of the provinces of Japan that I can scan and upload.
ShiroKobbure Nov 15, 2005, 04:33 PM well I know the provinces of Japan, I just liked the way Shogun assigned the provinces. at the menu when choosing a clan it shows which provinces you get can you take 5 or so screen shots 1 for each clan.
how many battle songs are there?
what is the music it plays when you are looking at the map?
are they in MP3 format? I think if you can convert them they will be smaller
Ogedei_the_Mad Nov 15, 2005, 06:02 PM There are 4 overland map tracks, each corresponding to the season. Two of them are almost dead silence (but take up space, nonetheless), so I think the best ones would be the Spring and Summer themes. I think there are 4 battle themes (there are 4 tension themes and 4 mobilize themes as well). The 4 battle themes and the 4 mobilize themes are really good, though. :) And yes, they are in MP3 format. Personally, I think Battle theme 1 and Mobilie theme 3 are the best tracks. Only problem with them is that they are quite short, but are big files.
You want the map showing the extent of clan territory at the setup screen (the screen before the game) or in-game maps of the provinces?
EDIT: Actually, there are 3 battle themes and 3 mobilize themes. 5 and 5 if you count the Mongol Invasion tracks.
ShiroKobbure Nov 15, 2005, 08:05 PM set up screens
actually, i have the shogun cds the music is on, i dont think i need to install it to get the music
edit: they arent playable off the CD, so how big are the 3 battle themes the best moblize theme and the 2 seasons themes?
Sword_Of_Geddon Nov 15, 2005, 08:59 PM I'm currently waiting for my friend to finish the pallette for my current unrealised unit, than I will start on the Asian units. I will wait to finish the Nahuatal Mercanary till Redalert gets back.
Ogedei_the_Mad Nov 15, 2005, 09:06 PM set up screens

They're about 3 to 5 MB each. Kind of big, considering how short they actually are. Can't you open up the music folder in the CD? Some games have the music located in a sound file folder on the CD.
ShiroKobbure Nov 15, 2005, 09:10 PM there are in cd 2 but i cant play them, they are .OGG
Ogedei_the_Mad Nov 15, 2005, 11:00 PM I can't upload any of the files over the forum because of the file size limit.
One thing you can do is download a free MP3 converter at CNet's Download.com . It shouldn't take very long.
Or you can look through "Shogun" fan sites. The music files used to be available for download on the "Total War" website. They're not there anymore since they combined all the sites.
ShiroKobbure Nov 16, 2005, 12:20 PM so if i add the mp3s to my mod it would make it too large...when added with other graphics and units
Ogedei_the_Mad Nov 16, 2005, 12:30 PM If you plan on having large files, then you'd have to get web hosting.
ShiroKobbure Nov 16, 2005, 12:43 PM hmmm....
anyways, the advisers will probably be,
Military: Samurai
Domestic: Typical Muromachi woman
Foreign: Ninja
Science: Onmyouji
Culture: Nobelman
Trade: Japanese in Western Clothing
Ogedei_the_Mad Nov 16, 2005, 12:48 PM What factions will you have playable?
By the way, did you get my PM?
ShiroKobbure Nov 16, 2005, 12:52 PM yeah im dling it now
Factions:
Shimazu
Imagawa
Mori
Oda
Hojo
Takeda
Date
Uesugi
Chosokabe
Takhisis Nov 16, 2005, 03:24 PM Advisers (my suggestions, which of course must be carried out):
military: a vassal daimyo
Domestic: a Typical Muromachi woman would be fine.
Foreign: Ninja is fine, or an Amida.
Science: an artisan/a samurai scholar (although the latter would be rather for the Edo period)
Culture: a Buddhist monk.
Trade: a moneylender/rice merchant
ShiroKobbure Nov 16, 2005, 03:32 PM well i actually posted my military adviser
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=101814&stc=1&d=1130381851
Sword_Of_Geddon Nov 17, 2005, 10:38 PM I have begun work on the No Dacha Samurai. I need suggestions for an attack, actually, if you have concept art for an attack I'd appreciate it. Is it a one-handed weapon at all times or should he use both hands to lift the weapon and attack?
Ogedei_the_Mad Nov 17, 2005, 10:57 PM The No-Dachi is a big two-handed sword, similar to the Chinese Zhanmadao 斬馬刀 ("zanbatou" in Japanese). I don't know if the No-Dachi was based off of the Zhanmadao, but their applications in battle were probably similar.
ShiroKobbure Nov 17, 2005, 11:21 PM the No-dachi would always be swung 2 handed, its heavy, and you cant cut through bone and armour one handed. if you have previews please post ^ ^
Sword_Of_Geddon Nov 18, 2005, 12:57 AM Well I'm have alot of trouble getting the figure to hold the sword with both hands and look natural, its a similiar problem I have when it comes to rifles and muskets and such...
ShiroKobbure Nov 18, 2005, 01:19 AM goto the pose room, there should be some 2 handed swordfighting poses
Sword_Of_Geddon Nov 18, 2005, 01:56 AM Well I'll look, maybe I will find some online somewhere...
Hikaro Takayama Nov 24, 2005, 10:43 PM Okay, I've got the Giesha Assassin done! It's available in the units download section.
ShiroKobbure Nov 24, 2005, 10:53 PM thanks alot, if you are interested ^ ^;;
I would also like a muromachi female armed with a Naginata, in the Sengoku mod, they would be units that cannot moved who can only defend the city. It was expected of women of a samurai family to defend their land if their husband or army was not their. The Naginata is known as a woman's weapon... although it is also the weapon for the Sohei and the Yamabushi
the unit would be about the same, just maybe a different color kimono and maybe a different hair prop. some women would leave their long hair down.
Takhisis Nov 25, 2005, 05:13 AM Hereīs a picture from wikipedia, of a Naginata (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naginata)
