When I start a new game, the world is all black...this is not the fog of war black....The only thing visible are my units and some horses!! Does anyone know if I have set something up wrong??

Same exact problem. Also I have two additional issues: 1. My leader name is always something like D98WIN somethng or another and 2. My leader head is just eyeballs and glasses and teeth on FDR and Washington has his little shoulder covers. Please HELP!!! So annoying.

Lemme guess, your computer name is "something like D98WIN something or another". The leader name is pulling from your computer name :crazyeye:. It's editable when you are setting up your civ.

The other problems, I can't help you with. There are several threads already started detailing this problem.

Yeah the same thing is happening to me, if anyone has any idea what to do that would be great.

Graphics card issues, same as previous posters...

I have the ATI Mobility Fire GL ATI 7800; It cost me $50 to figure out the game doesn't work with this driver, hopefully I can save someone else the $$$ :-)

Out of frustration, I did try playing the game "in the dark" a bit. Interestingly, some of the darkness began to go away over time.

Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out what I was doing to make this happen to clear the rest of the screen. Anyone else see some of the darkness lift?

I attached a second screen capture which has some visibility of terrian up near the top of the screen. This hopefully proves 'the world is dark' issue could be fixed by Firaxis or perhaps worked around by users.

I had some of my blackness disapear in one game. The area of blackness though would stay on the same spot, so when i scroll it would show undiscovered lands. This was only in 1 of the 5 games I tried to play in the dark tonight

I have the same issues, but I think it's because I have a bogus video card as it is. Stupid laptop. :(

I found that the longer I played the more the terrain became visible. First a patch appeared about the size of a city then as more cities were built the patch grew in size. Half way through the game all my terrain is visible, but the water is still black. When I discovered satelites I could see everything! Sure sounds like a bug to me, since it seems that your workers are the ones lifting the fog of war and the blackness at the same time. Use the Yields display and Resource display toggles on the Mini Map to help you get through the rough early stages.

When I first got the game today I was running a GF4 mx440 vid card and it didnt work the game was all black cept for the units so I whent out and bought a new vid card a GeForce 6600 GT now it runs perfectly without a problem and everything is on high.

I just bought Civ 4 yesterday and I have black terrain. I can see my cities and people, but not any ground. I've been searching this forum for the last 16 hours and haven't found a solution to my problem (probably because I'm an idiot when it comes to computers and this is the first computer game that i've ever purchased). It's a gateway laptop and here are the specs

Op system: Windows XP
Processor: AMD Athlon XP 3000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.2GHz
Graphics Card (or video card, not really sure): RADEON IGP 320M
Chip Type: RADEON 9200 AGP

I don't really know what any of this means or if I have T&L or how to go in and change the script in the game. Again, not very smart when it comes to computers

please help

This is exactly my issue! This is some sort of Civ4 outbreak! Although for me it's just the demo (I don't have the real game yet)
