View Full Version : The Coalition of Citizens
Strider Oct 26, 2005, 05:13 PM As the oldest* Democracy Game player around today, I think it's traditionally right if I start this up. Okay, well I'm the oldest if you don't include Chieftess, but I'll 'conviently' not mention her. Wait... Damn.
* I'm not the oldest DG player by age, I mean I've been around the longest.
Anyway, this is similiar to the "Union of Newbies" groups that have been started before. Just Coalition sounds much better then Union, and I've always thought calling newer players newbies sounds kind of insulting.
Basically, you can sign up as either a Vetern or a New Player. When you sign up as a Vetern, you are saying that you are willing to answer questions (inside of this thread or VIA PM) that anyone has about the Demogame. This includes game elements, the constitution (when we make one), etc. If you sign up as a New Player, you really get nothing.. just your name on the first post of this thread. Sometime later (and if this works out good) I'll expand onto it and actually make signing up as a New Player really useful.
However, for right now, the entire purpose of this thread is to answer questions on a case-by-case basis.

Good point, Nobody. None of us really knows that much about Civ4.
However, "veterans" may be helpful in getting newcomers accustomed to some of different aspects of a Democracy Game.
In short, I'll sign up. If anyone has any questions of the game, please don't hesitate to ask.

Whatever twisted view you want to hold on the matter, not everyone is starting off on the same footing. The people from the Civ3 Demogame have a advantage, of just plain experience and knowaledge.
So you propose that we don't try to even the footing, and allow some of the older demogame players to share there experience and knowaledge to aid those that are newer at the game?
------------
Also, if you have a question (ANY QUESTION!), please just post it inside of this thread or you can PM one of the people marked as a Vetern in the first post of this thread.
Meleager Oct 27, 2005, 11:21 PM Sign me down as a person with fresh eyes and a lot of potential. (i.e. another one of those n00bs)

Strider Oct 29, 2005, 09:31 AM Okay, in an attempt to make this thread more then just a sign-up fest. (I couldn't think of anything more interesting then sign-up fest. Ahh, give me a break! It's way to early in the morning.)
Okay, for everyone who's signed up as a Newer Player I ask that you read the FAQ (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=132286). It shouldn't take to long to read, although that's coming from someone who can read a 700 page book in less than 4 hours.
Anyway, inside of the FAQ, is there any more questions that you would like to ask? Or is there a current question on there, that you don't really understand?

Also, Welcome everyone!
Daghdha Oct 29, 2005, 11:43 AM Daghie is new to this demo-rama and he likes it :D . I can only answer q's related to music and single malt.

Harrier Oct 29, 2005, 05:58 PM Well, even though I have had a lot to say about the Civ4 Democracy game - I am still a new player. So sign me up as such. :)
By the way, what was the book?
At 20 seconds a page - it must have had a lot of pictures. :D

haha, I was wondering if someone would realize that.
It was actually an SAT Prep book, had a ton of charts and graphs. If you want to qualify those as "pictures" then your mostly right. I didn't bother even looking at them.
XionNova Oct 31, 2005, 12:57 PM I r TeH nEwB.
*cough* all joking aside, I just discovered this forum a week ago. Thought this was a cool idea, so here I am. Got a question for you.
Does each 'citizen' get his own city? (eventually) In the registry sign up, there's the spot for putting in 'your city name'. Is that just for city naming ideas, or what?
Strider Oct 31, 2005, 02:45 PM Does each 'citizen' get his own city? (eventually) In the registry sign up, there's the spot for putting in 'your city name'. Is that just for city naming ideas, or what?
No, each citizen does not get there own city. If we keep with the first come, first serve basis, then most likely the first 20 people who signed up will get to name a city inside of the game. Anyone who singed up pass those 20 are unlikely to get to name one.
Nobody Oct 31, 2005, 05:21 PM What about Elected officals getting them first? Also we will probably get more than 20 citys
uubry Oct 31, 2005, 08:23 PM Civ 4 makes it hard to run large empires with something similar to an upkeep cost, so if our nation gets that big that we are likely going to 'burn out'.

RaRe Nov 01, 2005, 08:25 AM Please sign me in. Newbie here :D
By the way, I don't think being labeled as a newbie is all that bad - it even gives you some previleges (spelling? :O) like people having lower expectations of you. :D Being called a newbie is never instulting for me.
Strider Nov 01, 2005, 03:19 PM Welcome RaRe and ChrisMDP.
By the way, I don't think being labeled as a newbie is all that bad - it even gives you some previleges (spelling? :O) like people having lower expectations of you. :D Being called a newbie is never instulting for me.
eh, it just always strikes me as insulting. I guess it's just a personal flavor thing, but I have no idea how I would react to it if I was in your poistion. So I'll just stick to using "Newer Player" for awhile. Untill I get to know everyone good enough to start insulting them by nicknames. :crazyeye:
Anyway, does anyone have any questions? Ask anything you want to! Hell, if your afraid of sounding stupid, just ask me VIA PM. God knows I've made some pretty stupid choices throughout my life time. Hell, I'm sure a week from now I'm going to regret ever saying this.
Of course, I'm still young.. so I'm allowed to be stupid. Atleast for another year.
kandalf Nov 01, 2005, 06:36 PM Put me down as a New Player.
RaRe Nov 01, 2005, 06:41 PM Alrighty.. ^^
So are there civil wars in a demogame?
Like let's say we have the citizens of a particular city and they would like to be independent so they rebel... and after their coup succeed they get to control every asect of their city - their produced military units, religion, and production. Or if it's a nationwide rebel of a bunch of criminals and/or socialist who wants to seize power.
If yes, how does that takes place?
Are there generals in the game? Like we can elect a general for our 3 archers to take control of them. Or do the president/prime minister/king/queen/etc. handles everything in-game?
How long does a demo game last?
By your best estimates, how long would it take before the game starts?
Is there a chatroom where all demo players hang out? (Not exactly #Civfanatics, but more of a specific chatroom for this demogame.)
Are there demogames where there are different civilizations controlled by different citizens? Like a multiplayer demogame in a large scale as this?
Hehehe, sorry for the list of questions but I am really new at this. ;)
Armed_Maniac Nov 01, 2005, 06:44 PM Put me in as a newbie ;)
Strider Nov 01, 2005, 07:01 PM Alrighty.. ^^
So are there civil wars in a demogame?
There has been only one so far, and it was roleplayed. Basically it was the IDA (Inter-Departmental Alliance.. which was ran by me  ) pitted against the MA (Military Alliance).
The MA was formed of the Military Department, one Province, and the Foreign Affairs department.
The IDA was formed of the Science Department, Trade Department, One Province, and the Culture Department.
If you want anymore information, I'll dig back into the forums and see if I can find it for you. Just ask.
Are there generals in the game? Like we can elect a general for our 3 archers to take control of them. Or do the president/prime minister/king/queen/etc. handles everything in-game?
Usually the leader of the military is the "General" and manages all offensive and defensive units. The other aspects in-game are handled by other elected officials (Trade, Science, Culture, Foreign Affairs, and Domestic). Although, this is likely to change in the Civ4 demogame.
How long does a demo game last?
Generally about 6 months, it has varied from 4 to 8 months though.
By your best estimates, how long would it take before the game starts?
Most likely it will start at the New Year, there is no way we will beable to start in November.
Is there a chatroom where all demo players hang out? (Not exactly #Civfanatics, but more of a specific chatroom for this demogame.)
The Civ3 demogame chatroom is #turnchat, however it only seems logical to have a Civ4 demogame chatroom. I'll have to create one.
Are there demogames where there are different civilizations controlled by different citizens? Like a multiplayer demogame in a large scale as this?
Yes, there called a Multi-Team Demogame. There isn't a Civ4 MTDG yet, but there is currently a Civ3 one. You can sign up for the Civ3 MTDG here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=124141). I recommend joining team TNT :).

Axle Nov 03, 2005, 07:00 AM Hi,
I'd like to sign up as a newb. I guess I'll have to read the forums before asking (hopefully) interesting question. My first (stupid) question would be : are there any plans to have some kind of "summary" of the ongoing discussion from time to time, so that people that are away for a while for any reason, or that are completely new aren't too lost ?
Slim_Chance Nov 03, 2005, 11:01 AM Hello, I would like to sign up as a new player. It's strange being new to something when you are 55.

Inside of the Civ3 Demogame there were summaries after each set of turns were played. The newspapers also summarized what was going on inside of the demogame pretty well. So yes, there are plans.

Well, you are suppose to sign up in the citizen registry. So if you haven't, then I recommend doing so. However, if you don't, I doubt anyone will notice.
RaRe Nov 04, 2005, 09:57 AM What's ISDG mean? I've searched on it abit and couldn't find out what it stands for. My best guess is inter site democracy game.. which doesn't make sense much while at times it does makes sense :x I hope i'm making sense.
Anyways, just wondering what ISDG stands for...

Your guess is correct. There have been two ISDGs, one on PTW and one on C3C. Teams from multiple sites play a competitive PBEM. Within each site's team, the organization can be whatever that team wants.
We also have a MTDG (multi team democracy game) here on CFC. Here is a link to the Civ3 MTDG (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=149).
DaveShack Nov 04, 2005, 10:12 AM New. Is it necessary to sign up at the citizen registry by cheiftess?
Some people get lititigous (sp? file lawsuits) if you try to be an elected or appointed official and are not signed up in the registry. We also do polls like the constitution ratifications as public polls and compare voters to the citizen registry if the vote is close or the issue is contested.
The main usage is to establish the census prior to the game starting, so we can require a certain percentage of the people to vote on an issue before the vote is considered valid. After the game starts we use actual numbers from the elections as the census.
So in short, what Strider said. ;)

Stilgar08 Nov 29, 2005, 07:26 AM How about a new thread for the Coalition where newbs can ask questions to the pro's?? This rather has become a sort of pure registration thread and a new one would sort things out a bit...
Stilgar08 Dec 13, 2005, 07:23 AM Hi Newbs and green category-folks :) !!!
I know the threads are stickied and very likely you already read my copied posts in the IIP and DSP-thread but here I would like to especially invite all Newbs to take the chance to create something new from scratch! That's what especially this first DG is about!
So, although it's a complex subject I hereby would like to invite and encourage every member of the Coalition to participate in the debate about our future government in the stickied threads:
Alphawolf's tri (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=146657)
ravensfire "classic" (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=146769)
Ginger Ale's Flexible government (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=142948)
Bring some time-the whole stuff gets increasingly complicated! But especially because of that you should dig in! :) GET INVOLVED! :)
You don't have to reply to the whole points in the posts; it's enough to state your opinion and suggestions where you have them ;) .
I feel that this is a major decision (Well, of course!) and so hereby I'd like my fellow greenmembers to get involved! (even if you not on my side there! :) )
Thanks,
Stilgar
P.S.: What about my proposal to start a Q&A-thread?? Strider????
P.P.S.: :bump:

Questions:
How long does each Designated Player play for?
What are the benefits of joining a citizen group?
What does the Right to Assemble and the Right to Free Movement mean?
Has it always taken this long to set up the demogame?

Mr. G Jan 10, 2006, 11:32 PM Okay, this convinced me, I'll join up. I'm a newbie definately to these parts, and I'm having some trouble figuring out exactly what is going on.
What Constitution is actually in effect here, and where can I find it? I've looked through and seen some legal problems, something about double users and a good deal about triumvate vs. flexible, but there isn't much definate on what is official. In that vein, has the game even started yet? Is there a save anywhere or are we still discussing settings?
Thanks in advance for taking some time to answer a newcomer's questions.

There was a big controversy. Basically a few election polls and regular polls were fixed by someone with 12 identical accounts. We have now decided, after revoting on government type, to go with Tri gov. Also, no the game hasn't started yet, but it should start soon. all settings have already been agreed upon, dig through the polls forum for the results. hope this helps. :)
Strider Jan 14, 2006, 11:33 AM Okay, I'm back from my 'extended' vacation. I've updated the members list (Yes, BCLG... I put you down as a vet).
Alittle behind on current affairs, but I can fix that in a few hours. Alittle tired at the moment though so I'm going to get some sleep first, and then try the catching up. (you try driving from Houston to St. Louis... it's a 14 hour drive!)
BCLG100 Jan 15, 2006, 04:19 AM o wow i forgot i was even in this but ok :)
koondrad Jan 15, 2006, 04:41 AM so um yeah, I'm a n00b.
GeorgeOP Jan 20, 2006, 10:14 PM Ok, I haven't joined this party, but I had a question for the "experienced" players around here.
How many people are usually still playing by the time we get to the end of the game?
I ask, because in the CoL, it says that someone may not have multiple elected positions. But someone can hold an elected position and be a deputy for a different department. I'm not against anyone, nor do I doubt their ability to do both jobs, but by holding two jobs they prevent someone else from having an important job in the government. I wanted to be a deputy to gain some on the job training. But I realize this may be allowed because of the amount of drop off you must have. Before I bring up a seperate thread to debate a CoL ammendment, I wanted to gauge some veteran's thoughts on this.

Usually by the end of the game, the 'active' population has dropped. However, it has almost never been enough to bring the game to a halt. The drop this time around will be significantly lower, sense this is a brand new CivIV democracy game.
You are correct, there is no purpose in allowing a leader to hold deputy poistions also. Maybe in later DG's we should think about it, but not any time soon.
Challange the law, you have my full support.
Also, were not a Political Party.. just a citizen group.
Whomp Jan 21, 2006, 09:41 AM Thanks for helping us noobs Strider. However I am very concerned about how certain players....
A.Treat other citizens. I presume we can take care of this during elections however is there anything we as citizens can do now?

BCLG100 Jan 21, 2006, 09:43 AM Ok, I haven't joined this party, but I had a question for the "experienced" players around here.
Start a new thread whenever you feel, being a deputy is a great way to gain experience, however the holding the 2 jobs thing probably wont become a major factor till the next DG as civ4 is still a fairly new release so should keep getting members.
Strider Jan 21, 2006, 10:04 AM Treat other citizens. I presume we can take care of this during elections however is there anything we as citizens can do now?
Not really, short of a leader committing some major crime, impeachment is near impossible. However, you could try forcing some results with just sheer numbers. 6-7 votes in an election can sway the tally, use that to your advantage ;).
Why they are not forthright with the citizens about turnplay. Why would this be non-interactive?
It should not be non-interactive, there really is no reason not to be forward with information. Unless of course, that information involves an illegal action, or is not known by the person being asked.

I just got back from a two month location, I've yet to glance at the new constitution. Mainly because I'm wondering if I really want to look at it, and wether or not my looking at it would benefit the game as a whole. Anyway, I have no idea what the current constitution is made up of, but what I've seen hasn't given me any confidence in it.
Getting information from the save onto the forums, for players who can not access the save (for whatever reason), has been a problem in the past. It should have been a focus of this constitution. I do not see this being the result of a determined effort to finally fix this problem.
What can be done? Push for legislation (that works) that gives citizens access to information on the forum.
Whomp Jan 21, 2006, 12:18 PM Thanks Strider. I'm sure the Idiot Partee will make sure this does not stand. ;)

I guess that always works.

Anyway, before I left, I was planning on putting together a series of guides to help newer players in the game. I've sense them lost all train of thought on these guides, but I still want to make some.
If your interested in helping, send me a PM or just reply in this thread.
BCLG100 Jan 26, 2006, 04:52 PM I'll help but right now am swamped with schoolwork nd girlfriend nd life etc but ill do what i can.
Strider Feb 05, 2006, 05:40 PM Okay, I've got some of the first help thread I wanted to make. There isn't much to it, mainly because I'm not in the best of moods now and couldn't hold still long enough to think of anything.
How do I join?
To join the game, they're is first two things you must do. One is sign up inside of the Citizen Registry found here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=132266). The second step is to join the usergroup, for you can vote inside of polls and elections. You do this by going to your User Control Panel (User CP), and requesting to join the Civ4 Democracy Game group.
How do I get started?
You do not need to read the current constitution & code of laws (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=132270) to play the game correctly. Just know one simple rule: You can not play the save, or take any action within the save that is not reversible. As long as you remember that, you can play the entire game without reading the rules. To get a good start inside of the demogame, just post your comments inside of the various discussion threads inside of the citizens forum. The better quality your post, the more likely you will get recognized. You don't have to make several posts in rapid succession, nor do you have to reply to every current discussion thread. One, good quality, response will get you plenty of recognition.
What are the different sub-forums?
The Citizens sub-forum is for game discussions, citizens groups, and other misc. threads. The goverment sub-forum contains threads related to the management of the democracy game government. The polls forum contains all polls, over game issues, constitution amendments, or other misc. things.
The warm-up sub-forum and Multi-Team demogame sub-forum are differant games, and seperate from the democracy game. You can visit those two forums for more information about their purposes.

If you have any more questions be free to send me a private message, or you can ask in this (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=133196) thread.
Strider Feb 11, 2006, 06:31 PM I edited the proposed help thread above, any other comments?
BCLG100 Feb 12, 2006, 03:50 AM well just its placement really, not many people are going to be seeing it on the 5th page so could add it to the first post/make a new thread.
Strider Feb 12, 2006, 07:35 AM well just its placement really, not many people are going to be seeing it on the 5th page so could add it to the first post/make a new thread.
I will make a new thread for it inside of the main forum, this is just the creation portion ;).

Do you need help getting oriented?
Methos Mar 24, 2006, 07:17 AM New player, and a little (read: a lot) confused.
A few questions I have...
1.) I registered for the Democracy group and have been accepted. Am I correct in believing that all this allows me to do is participate in polls?
2.) I'm a little overwhelmed with.... well, everything, so would like someone to point out the basic threads I should start with. Currently with the nominations/elections, multiple ministries threads, polls, and tons of other stuff I'm a little lost as to where to begin. I have already read Strider's 'Help' thread.
Currently I'm at that stage I'm so overwhelmed at all the information pertaining for this type of game that nothing is sinking in. The game sounds fun, I just need to find something to build a foundation with.
Thanks for any imput. If you prefer not to clog this thread up feel free to PM me.
Edit: My questions are regarding the Civ4 Demogame, which I believe is different than the sub-forum this thread seems to be in. My apologies.
GeorgeOP Mar 24, 2006, 08:14 AM Methos, welcome aboard.
Yes, you are now a member of the Democracy group. That was all you had to do.
This is my, along with many other people, first time. Just find something you're interested in (like one ministry or one cause) and get involved with that. Don't worry about being involved with everything. You can just gradually start adding more things you're involved with. I felt the same way when I joined in December, and now I'm involved in most things. If you have any questions, just ask. Most people are willing to help you out.
You posted in the right sub-forum. Here is where citizen groups of the Demo game get together. It is also where the RPG is played. The RPG is played inside the Demo game, so all of our characters only have the technology that the Demo game has. The only sub-forum that doesn't follow the Demo game is the Muti-Team Demogame forum. This is where we play a different game where instead of everyone playing as one leader, we split up into teams and play against each other with no AI. That game hasn't started yet (we're waiting for the next patch), so you still have plenty of time to join that game.
robboo Mar 24, 2006, 09:07 AM Welcome Methos
Read a few of the threads, then vote in the elections. after about 2 weeks of following along you will get a better feel for it. Then just jump in where you want to get involved.
Something GeorgeOP left out...IF you would like to join the multi-team demogame..we are looking for some more members on Team Aloha.( GeorgeOP how could you forget to recruit..)
Methos Mar 24, 2006, 02:14 PM Another question:
Where is the current game save for the Democracy game? According to the Turnchat Schedule/Summary Thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=132272) thread it looks like the last time anyone has played was in February? I know we are not allowed to play the save, but are we allowed to look at it?
Thanks GeorgeOP and Robboo for your help, though I must admit I don't believe I could get into the RP part of the game just yet.

The most recent save can be found in this thread. (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=163093) There is also a good amount of screenshots in that thread over our current events.
Although, if you just want to look at the save and find out that way. Click here (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/C4DG1_BC_0040_Turn10.Civ4SavedGame)

Pharod May 17, 2006, 10:56 AM A overwhelmed new player right here with one question - are there any multiple team games active in CIV IV now?
dutchfire May 17, 2006, 11:03 AM there is a multi-team demogame around here, and our site competes in a inter-site competetion but i don't know anything about both of them (btw I never saw this thread before)
@ Mods: Shouldn't this thread be moved to the citizens (or general) demogameforum instead of the RPG forum
Whomp May 17, 2006, 11:32 AM A overwhelmed new player right here with one question - are there any multiple team games active in CIV IV now?
Here are three links for civ4 multi team games.
This the sign up for the civ4 ISDG (intersite game) at CFC. There are 14 sites competing. 7 teams in 2 games. Though I'm playing with another site :p I will give you CFC's sign up page.
CFC team sign up page (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=165646&page=4)
CFC civ4 MTDG. 5 teams playing against each other at CFC. At about turn 18 right now.
Civ4 MTDG (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=158025&page=9)
A little discussion about how each team operates is in this thread.
Team background. (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=163441)IE My team Team Piffle is comprised of a bunch of anarchists. No laws. :D
There's also a 2 games going in C3C if you're interested. The ISDG finals in the late AA, though CFC has been eliminated. There's also the MTDG at CFC which is in the early MA . Both have these have been a lot of fun. There are some public thread in the C3C forum with each team's newspaper MIA International Tribune, The Donghnutian Gazette, TNT's Ironic Bible and my team's paper The Crazy Eye.
They are very funny and some of the team members have joined together again in the civ4 game.
Pharod May 17, 2006, 12:51 PM Ah, think I will also join up in the civ4 MTDG at CFC, I will have continous questions about everything but will probably get the hang of it by myself without bothering you too much...
Thank you
