Alright, this poll is for ATI graphic card users only. How many of you have actually gotten the game to run?

Got my ATI all in wonder 128 MB radeon 9200 to run it after i turned fast write on. right click on desktop, click properties, click display, advanced, then find out where it says "turn fast write on". Mine worked after I did that.

I wanted to try this out - but I can't. The option is not avaiable for me, and the right click help menu said that this option may not be available because of incompatibility between graficcard and chipset ....

Runs out of the box with no driver cleaning necessary on an ATI Radeon x850 Pro...just like all the other Pro variant card owners.

The results of this poll might be a little skewed. Most of the people who can check the "yes" option, are off happily playing the game while those of use in the "no" group sit here reconsidering our life choices.

For all who are looking for the Fast Write setting:
start the Catalyst control center
Change "view" to "advanced view"
Go to "SmartGart" => "AGP settings" => "Fast write on / off"

Doesn't work on the machine of my friend, though.
Spec:
Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis
All AGP and PCI settings are ON.

If you can't get your graphics to work, please post your ATI specs here. Get them by going to start->run and typing in dxdiag to get the video specs.

I can get the graphics to run. It's the text part that is screwed up on mine. I have a Radeon 8500 All in Wonder with 128MB. It gives me "XML eror" messages but I can click through them and get the game to load. HOWEVER after that all the text in the game is in "code" format. Unreadable.

Runs fine on my ATI Radeon 9600 Atlantis.
Make sure you have all the newest available drivers for not only your video card but also for you chipset, CD/DVD drive. (had problems with simcity4 because of this)
Then make sure your not running ZoneAlarm as there are known issues with this software. Also try turning off your virus software while installing the game.

I posted the driver version, in case only certain driver versions work. I remember a problem with UT2004 in that it would only run on older nVidia drivers, as opposed to the most recent. Maybe the same holds true here? I don't know.

I got the first CD to load just fine. But when the set up program asked for the second CD, I placed it in the drive, then hit OK. A box came up saying that it was not a good path. I explored the CD and there was nothing there again. I have rebooted several times and I have not been able to get the load splash screen to show up again. My first post is number 18 above.

Please help if you can. I am getting disappointed.

Happens sometimes when the cd drives get dirt/dust built up inside. Get some compressed air and clean it out. Then try again. HTH

Radeon 7000 on a laptop (yeah, I'm pushin' it...), and I get lots of black land and Cheshire leaderheads when I try to run the game. I can make it playable if I force the map to be visible at all times, but that ruins the fun of the game.

For all who are looking for the Fast Write setting:
start the Catalyst control center
Change "view" to "advanced view"
Go to "SmartGart" => "AGP settings" => "Fast write on / off"

Doesn't work on the machine of my friend, though.
Spec:
Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis
All AGP and PCI settings are ON.

AGP Fast Write is a motherboard setting (as far as I understand it) and in a lot of machine it is defaulted to OFF!

In order for software to be able to turn it on and off, it must be activated in your computers BIOS settings. To get to those, press the DEL (sometimes the ESC key, but what ever gets you into settings) button about 1 or 2 seconds after you have first powered on, this should take you to a menu of choices usually on a blue background, if Windows boots you have been unsecessful in getting into your BIOS and you need to power down and try again. The layout of the BIOS menu on your computer is motherboard dependant therefore I cannot help you find the setting however it will be there somewhere if it is available on your motherboard. Please note; your BIOS is a very important part of your computer. Be careful when changing settings within here.

Have you read the 2KGAMES run through to get this working yet? It is pretty comprehensive, click here (http://www.2kgames.com/civ4/support_ati.htm)

I have two different Radeon 9800 Pro (128M video RAM) cards here, as well as an NVidia GeForce 4 4600. I have the ATI 5.10 drivers running under XP SP2 on an Intel P4 2.4GHz with 1G RAM.

With the Radeon 9800s (I've tried both), the game starts up fine, but after playing for about 10-15 minutes I start to get bizarre graphical glitches -- texture corruption and random flashing polygons everywhere.

My Radeon graphical corruption is extremely similar to the ones this NVidia user is reporting:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=134272

I tried on the NVidia GF4 4600, and had no graphical glitches.

Here's examples of the corruption I'm getting:

First time, no problem.

ATI Radeon 8500LE 128MB 4x AGP

First tried running it with my drivers from earlier this year, and it worked fine with a couple of very minor anomolies (some red pixels in the diplomacy animations and whiting out of some parts of the screen at odd times). However, I decided to uninstall those drivers and install the new Catalyst ones. Works great now!

Rest of my system:

AMD Athlon 1900+
512MB PC133 RAM
C-Media CMI8738 6-channel sound card (el cheapo deluxe) with drivers from 2002 .
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4

Also, works fine with Microsoft Anti-Spyware and Fix-it Utilities running in the background.

I'm also getting the 'failed to initialize error'.

Operating System: Windows XP Pro
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
Memory: 512MB RAM
Page File: 120MB used, 1897MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Video Card: Radeon 9600 ProFamily
Driver: 6.14.0010.6462
Date: 8/03/2004

I plan on following the step-by-step instructions provided at the Civ4 site to hopefully resolve this problem, but I don't mind telling when I say I shouldn't have to jump through such ridiculous hoops to play the game.

Oh, and I thought it was a wonderful touch when the first disc is labled 'Install' and the second is labled 'Play' - yet to play the game you need to have the 'Install' disc inserted.

My father on the other hand can get the game loaded, but has the black background/chessire cat problem, so now I have to research on how to fix that problem.

I am having flashbacks to the day I installed Masters of Orion 3...but of course, I am a bit peeved right now, so my opinion may be a *bit* skewed.

My X800 XT PT works fine except for the occasional invisible unit.

My brother's X800 Pro works fine except for same as above.

My friend's 9600 Mobility works fine. Not sure if he is having the same invisible unit problem or not.

I can't run the game with my Thinkpad T30. Never had any other problem with games before.

Athlon 2600+, Radeon 9800 Pro 128 mb, 1 GB of RAM worked fine after first install, and after I figured out they mislabeled the Play disc...

The only minor problem is the audio in the wonder movies is sometimes but not always choppy.

Video Card: Radeon 9800 PRO

Game plays fine until about the Medieval age, then, the further I progress, the more graphical glitches I get. The interface blinking on and off, texture corruptions, etc. The game is practically unplayable by the Industrial age, as it will crash every other turn.

x800XL.

Unpak routine worked.

I'm still pissed over the hassle, but it works fine now.

I could kick myself over and over. I had a Radeon 8500 LE, which worked more or less with Civ and the rest of my system (Athlon 1000Mhz, 512MB SDRAM), videos tended to skip slightly, but I could play. So, I thought, I want the whole thing, went and got me a Radeon 9600 XT. What happened? The cursor started flickering in the options menu before the game, and I never got since past the "done" screen right before the game starts. Tried the unpak trick, nothing yet. :-(
