I'm on my second game (first one I quit because a lion slaughtered my settlers for my second city-- ok so now on bring warriors with them [though it negates the settlers 2 movement pts]) and now on my second game I have two cities and I just made a road between them and it came out kinda of weird looking...

Where the worker stands is a road and the tile between my worker and the capitol also has a road. The game didn't draw a road correctly which should go from the capitol to the dock next to my second city in a fairly straight path...
I guess the river screws it up but whatever it is it really does not look good

That is kind of odd. It looks like both roads terminate into docks at the river.
Also, those cities are really close together. You have about 6 squares of overlap. I can't really judge since I can't see the rest of the map, but that seems tigher than I would like.

There is a road, the problem is that it doesn´t overlap flood plains graphics...

EDIT: Nevermind, wasn't sure what I was saying. Delete.

Yeah I was hesitant to build a city that close but with those flood plain squares there is so much food available, and the in-game city building AI put a blue circle on the square I built that city in indicating that it is a good place to build.
Built two more cities pretty quickly after that and don't see too much of a problem with maintenance yet.. two cities were free, then with my third it cost 1 gold and now with 4 it costs 4 gold. As you can see though Paris was founded next to 3 !!! sources of gold so with 10% into taxes I'm generating 7 gold. So far so good...

In Civ3, you needed a tech to bridge rivers, as it were. Perhaps there's something similar in Civ4?

Yeah definitely need bridge building tech which is Construction in Civ4, but Im just saying wouldn't expect a road going from Paris to that dock right outside Orleans? It does not look like there is ANY road in either of those two squares with the way it's drawn now

Now here's a better example, this time with railroads...

I made a railroad from Lyons to Paris. Instead of a straight line it made these little pieces of discontinuous rails. Looks really weird and it makes it really confusing as where rails are really going and what's connected.

lt looks like it's a rendering glitch --- the "green" area of the floodplain is being drawn ABOVE the road/railroad. Bug report it.
