Well on my first experiences with civ 4 I think I have become comfortable with most of the new playing style, but Im a little confused about citizen management.

1. Does troop garrison quell unhappy citizens?

2. What does quell unhappy citizens?

3. My army went on strike when I attacked somebody in multiplayer, and lots of troops disbanded because I ran out of gold. What do I do about strikes?

4. How does resistance work and what can I do to speed up assimilation of captured cities?

If you dont have ANY Garnision your citizen will get give you 2x:mad: (past a certain city size it seems) because the City is undefended

2. What does quell unhappy citizens?

works just like civ3 ... Temples and other "happy buildings" as well as luxury goods (you need mines, plantages or whatever to get benefit of the :) )

As holodmer pointed out, if your city is large enough, having no garrison at all gives  . (Sulla's wlakthrough shows this). If you switch to the Hereditary Rule civic (a gov't civic unlocked by monarchy) you get the old :) per garrison unit.

3. My army went on strike when I attacked somebody in multiplayer, and lots of troops disbanded because I ran out of gold. What do I do about strikes?

This was war weariness, I think. If you go into the real city window, in the lower left corner is a display of the nationality of the population in the city. If you attack someone's homeland, they get angry.

As for 4. did you actually read the manual? page 47 gives the complete lowdown on captured cities, and resistance.

Related question: Is WLTKD dead? It seems like it, since happiness has been simplified to happy faces vs unhappy faces.

There are other Civics that gives you happy, too.

Environmentalism, gives you happy for not cutting down forests. (Kind of find that humorous.)
Free Religion, given happyness for each religion the city has. (This can really stack up actually.)
Nationhood, barrack give +2 happiness.

There are still WLTDK. Got a couple last night on Settler in the late game. Spirituality really helps remove the sting of Revolution.

So what triggers WLTKD? Do you need twice as much :) as ? And what are it's effects? In Civ III it reduced corruption, but that's gone now.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure. There were too many other things I was looking at trying to learn that I wasn't looking at the WLTKD. Sorry.

2. Religion and luxuries are the two easiest ways.
