how come it doesn't stop researching future tech? im on Future Tech11 and havn't goten anything since Future Tech1... whats it for? is there any point of researching after Future Tech1?

Actually, I think it only increased your score in Civ 3...

In Civ 4 it gives you +1 health and happiness for each one.

you could always turn down your research and increase your culture (or wealth).

The +1 happiness and health are great for a little while, useless after a certain point.

Big cities get dirty, and it's a cheap and fast way to get your cities nice, clean, and happy.

Then you can switch everything, as said before, to culture and wealth. Both important late game for upgrading units to your new-fangled modern armour, stealth bombers, destroyers, etc.

Oops, well it still increases your score, though. Population is a huge factor in scoring and this allows your cities to get much larger, even if you have all the resources on the map. I also think a city growing from size 20 to 21 is a lot more pop than growing from 10 to 11.
