Tried shift-a - no luck. Late game I usually let my workers loose, but in my game last night they destroyed half of my farms with cottages - any way to automate without destroying previous improvements? Thanks

Yea, it's in Options - Other, i think. You just have to check the box.

its one of the actions you can select when the unit is highlighted.
