View Full Version : Should we play a pregame warmup?
DaveShack Oct 31, 2005, 12:33 PM There has been some support for a pregame warmup as a pure democracy, at the same time the rules are being set. It's impossible to tell however whether that support is strong or not without polling.
Should we play a warmup game, as a simple democracy, while the rules discussions are going on, using the assumptions shown below?
Yes - we should play a quick game using these assumptions
No - we should not play a quick game using these assumptions
Abstain
Note that I have not included an "other" category. If you disagree with the idea of a quick game, or can't live with the assumptions, or both, then vote no. You should only vote yes if you agree with both the quick game and the assumptions. The reason for doing it this way is that we can't afford to spend a huge amount of time talking about how to do a quick game -- that energy should go into the actual rules, or into learning how to play the game.
You are welcome to post suggestions about the assumptions in this thread. The :king: will decide whether or not to incorporate suggestions. ;)
Assumptions:
The objective is to have fun and learn Civ4 together.
Approximately 10 turns played every 2-3 days, using volunteer DPs.
DPs can have online sessions using #turnchat but are not required to.
randomized DP selection, within the bounds of when people are available to play. (When more than one person wants to play at the same time, I'll do the randomizing as a service to the community)
The DP for an upcoming session handles all leadership duties for that session, including figuring out what needs to be polled, setting up the poll, etc.
Especially since this is a warmup game, not everything needs to be polled. Think of this game as being like a bunch of people standing behind the DP yelling encouragement and suggestions. The DP may or may not decide to do what the public suggests. The information we're after is what kinds of things need team decisions and what kinds of things don't make sense for team decisions.
If there is strong interest I'll approach Thunderfall about having a temporary subforum, so we don't clutter up the main Civ4 DemoGame forum.
We'll have a quick discussion about world parameters, but I'm thinking the semi-randomly selected 1st DP should pick.
*Satis Oct 31, 2005, 01:17 PM Let's go. I'll volunteer to DP; have plenty of time right now
Ginger_Ale Oct 31, 2005, 02:53 PM Actually -- sure. As long as we have no positions, and we are just having random DPs that will gather the interest of how to rule the nation for 10 turns (economy focus? mainly culture? warring? etc.), it's a good idea. We get experience for playing Civ4 and some people get more comfortable DPing. It will be a quick game - not so much on strategy as getting everyone to understand the DG. I still encourage seperate SP (Single Player) games too.
Double Stack Oct 31, 2005, 03:53 PM Consider this as a dry run. We need to be able to get ideas of what we need for the rules.
ravensfire Oct 31, 2005, 04:06 PM Yes.
With the differences in how Civ4 is set up from Civ 3, something like this will be nice. A chance to try a few things AND something that will keep the interest in the Civ4 DG going is a Good Thing (tm)

Alphawolf Oct 31, 2005, 04:31 PM Strange, I hadn't looked at this thread yet but this is what I said I meant in my last post in the poll about when we should start.
the post in its entirety:
I knew that it would be impossible to start any actual games before the last week in November at the earliest. I had intended the 2/3 week options to be a quick game with no set government, total democracy deciding pretty much everything by poll. The purpose wouldn't have been to win per say but do get our bearings and to help us on deciding on a constitution and form of government. I never thought a 'real' game could have been stared before December. In hindsight I wish that I had made this clearer, but that's why they say hindsight is 20/20.

So, yes I think we should.

Strider Oct 31, 2005, 05:44 PM I don't plan on partcipating if we do have one. I'd rather commit my time to making sure the real game is fun. So I voted no.
Furiey Oct 31, 2005, 05:55 PM Still no sign of CIV for me in the UK :( , I'll just have to lurk.
donsig Oct 31, 2005, 06:48 PM I'm abstaining. I thought we were going to play a real demogame and make the rules as we went. It seems to me a warm up will delay the real demogame.

Meant to have this, must have gotton distracted...
9. Before the real game starts, the warmup game will end.

Good enough for me, you can consider my vote officially switched from No to Yes.
I don't plan on partcipating, but this would be a great Demogame Crash Course. Just don't make it like one of those summer classes at college, that's a living hell. I took College Algebra last summer, one month of it. We went through the entire god damn text book in one month. I was about ready to smack the teacher upside the head.
ravensfire Nov 01, 2005, 05:11 PM Another point in favor,
Several people have suggested a daily game session that's X turns long. How does that work? Is it possible?
Only (good) way to find out - test it! If we can't get a temporary subforum, how about use the Government forum, and just make this happen.

ehh.. just use the main forum. It gets abused enough anyway.
RoboPig Nov 01, 2005, 05:48 PM it seems like a waste of time, why not bull through the demogame and see what happens, the less we prepare the more challenging it will be. challenge=fun!
DaveShack Nov 01, 2005, 06:10 PM Bummer, after all the hype is done, this only ended up with 25 total votes the 1st day. :(
It will be interesting to see how many more trickle in by Friday.
Nobody Nov 01, 2005, 07:04 PM i voted no, but i would change my vote if it was a tiny map(or what ever smallest is called) on cheiftain with quick play

I agree it should be a small map, but I don't think we should play on easy.
Namelessones Nov 03, 2005, 01:37 PM I'm very new at this, I think a quick game would help me and all the other new players.
Chieftess Nov 07, 2005, 06:49 PM Sounds like a good idea. Should get everyone used to the new concepts, and such.
BTW, the DP must remeber to use the admin password (ctrl-shift-a or something - forgot the key combo).
Ginger_Ale Nov 07, 2005, 06:55 PM Fine idea, but Chieftess, according to ainwood the password protect function isn't working the way it should. (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=3261938&postcount=4)
Now I need amazon to deliver the game!
RegentMan Nov 07, 2005, 07:33 PM Heh... finally getting it too, eh Ginger? I hope you have better luck than I did!
Ginger_Ale Nov 07, 2005, 07:37 PM I supposedly "preordered" yet 2 weeks later Amazon still hasn't shipped ... reading other people's posts I think I will either have some graphics problems or be the bare minimum. Unless you have your friend build me a computer too. :p
RegentMan Nov 07, 2005, 07:43 PM Pay the shipping costs and I'll ask him!
To avoid threadjacking: I voted no. I'd rather save our first game for the real deal.
Furiey Nov 07, 2005, 08:07 PM Or it might not recognise the disk in the drive and you can't play at all :(
So as I won't be able to play I'd have to abstain on this one (if the poll hadn't already closed that is!)
Armed_Maniac Nov 07, 2005, 08:17 PM Well, there is gonna be one... so there's another thread on it (maybe in the citizen section? not sure though...)

But hopefully it's fixed in this week's patch. Read the thread about it. :)
UnitQ Nov 07, 2005, 09:45 PM Thay started a Foram on it. I don't have to give a link since it will be easey to find. :)
