Ladies, Gentlemen, and Barbarians:

I am pleased to announce that I am now taking signups for my eighteenth PBEM game! This is a Civilization IV PBEM game and requires the latest version of Civilization IV (currently v1.00) to participate.

So far, I have the following confirmed players: heihojin (me) - random leaderIf you would like to play, please send me a private message or e-mail with the following information: your CFC user name (required),
your e-mail address (required),
your leader preferences (please give your top three choices, if any),
your SMTP server address (optional),
your physical location (required - city, state and country, or time zone relative to GMT),
the password you would like for your turn (optional, although I strongly recommend it), and
any customized civilization information (Leader Name, Civ Description, Short Description, and/or Civ Adjective).Because much of this information is sensitive and must be specified at the game's inception, I strongly recommend you not post this information as a reply to this thread. I will post replies in this thread indicating when spots are filled.

You may only request a spot for yourself; I will not accept any requests on someone else's behalf. Please note that if you wish to play a particular civilization that has more than one leader available (such as the Chinese), you must select a leader or I will simply assign one to you.

Please note that your choice of leader is considered public information at the start of the game. If you opt for a customized, random leader, you are expected to inform me of the actual leader given to you immediately following your first turn.

The game will begin as soon as I have eight confirmed players. If you have not specified a leader preference by the time the game launches, I will assign you a random leader. Spots for the game and leader requests will generally be filled first-come, first-serve, as determined by the timestamp of the request; however, I may deliberately favor some requests over others in the interest of balancing my games.

Turn summaries will likely not be posted to this or any other forum, as I am far more interested in actually playing the game than with posting turns in a public forum.

Commitments

By requesting to play you commit to the following: You agree to contact me (through e-mail, private message, a third party or other means) as soon as possible if you encounter technical difficulties or other circumstances that prevent you from fulfilling these commitments.
You agree to act in a courteous manner toward all other players at all times in your "out-of-game" communication.
You agree to abide by the general protocol for gameplay as set forth in the welcome e-mail, as well as any changes to the protocol I may make during the course of the game.
You agree to inform me when you are going to be unavailable for a period of greater than 24 hours.
You agree to check your e-mail at least once daily (at least twice daily is preferred).
You agree to promptly respond to all messages - immediately, if possible.
You agree to complete and forward your turn within 24 hours of receiving it.
You agree to refrain from "in-game" communication with another player until making contact with that player's civilization.
You agree to play the game to completion unless personal or technical circumstances render it impossible for you to do so.If you would like to peruse my general protocol for PBEM gameplay prior to signing up, let me know and I will happily e-mail it to you.

"In-game" communication refers to sharing information about your civilization or other players' civilizations, making deals, proposing alliances, etc.. "Out-of-game" communication primarily refers to administrative matters (such as "Dude, where's my turn?" e-mails), but also includes innocuous conversation (such as "Where is everyone from?" e-mails).

Default Game Settings

Unless specified otherwise, the default game settings will be as follows: Map: Continents
Size: Standard
Climate: Temperate
Sealevel: Medium
Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
Options: None
Victories: All
Game Turn Limit: 0
City Elimination Limit: 0Please note that many of these rules are open to discussion beforehand; I will generally side with the majority opinion.

Important Information

One question that has frequently arisen is whether reloading the game is allowed. Unfortunately I know of no way to regulate the number of times the game is reloaded, so any rule prohibiting reloading is impossible to enforce. Furthermore, reloading seems quite acceptable in the event of an error, e.g. if you make a mistake in moving your units. Because I am reluctant to support rules that cannot be enforced, and because I'm sure that I personally will have to reload at least one game due to an error, I do not have any rules regulating reloads. Ultimately, it's a question of what provides the most enjoyment for you as a player.

Please note that once you make contact with another player's civilization, your diplomacy options are completely unrestricted. Feel free to invent whatever deals you wish, regardless of whether they are enforceable from within the game or not.

My games tend to fill up quickly, so submit your request to play now!

I just sent the welcome e-mail and the first turn. When you receive the welcome e-mail, please read it thoroughly and send me a reply confirming that you received it.

For the first turn only, please remember to carbon-copy me on all your turn sends (if they are done manually) and confirmation receipts. Remember also that you can reset any of your Player Details from within the game by pressing Alt-D. If you change anything other than your password, please let me know.

May the most ruthless win!

In a game with not one or two, but 3 (!) aggressive nations. I have a great starting position btw. It is clearly the best of all starting positions known to mankind.

I'd show you more, but I can't, since this starting position is just too magnificent.

No problem, I'll come over for a visit and check out the countryside myself :D

Although I'm sure you guys already love me so much that you want me to be there twice I have to insinst on my uniqueness

I think when I looked at that you were only there once. Could be some kind of error? I heard of similar in a other PBEM.

Not one turn into my first Civilization IV PBEM game, and a bug surfaces. I swear, PBEM gets no quality assurance testing from Firaxis.

Somehow my Player Details were changed to represent me as DaEezT and erasing my password. I edited them back to what they were originally were; we'll see if they stay.

If you edited your Player Details in any way on the first turn, including resetting your password, please let me know. It would be nice to isolate the bug, so I can tell Firaxis how their QA department isn't doing their job.

By the way, nice job on the first turn guys! There isn't any further need to carbon-copy me on turn sends or confirmation receipts at this point.

In-game smtp authentication also doesn't work. :p

Password? There was no password for my turn. I loaded the game on the first turn and there was my settler, no choice to enter a password.

I think Heihojin had to put it in when he setup the game.
Do you recall giving him one?

In-game smtp authentication also doesn't work. :p

I tried also and was unsuccessful. Your other post about the way the authentication is done has scared me enough anyway not to use the feature.

Isildurs Heir is correct - I didn't specify one for you, since you didn't give me one. You should be able to change your password by pressing Alt-D to edit your Player Details.

With regards to the automatic e-mail sending, I've been using it - and apparently the client has sent my file without the .Civ4SavedGame extension, forcing Isildurs Heir to rename the file each time. Has anyone else experienced this?

I hope you mean only that your next several turns are going to be boring, and not that there is another bug that prevents you from doing anything else during your turn. (Game 10, the only one of my PTW games to have a player using Civilization III: Gold Edition experienced a bug exactly like that in the first turn.)

I'm not in you guys' game, but I wanted to mention that when I did some testing, I could not get the smtp authorization to work, either. It works perfectly for me with the exact same settings in Outlook Express, but for some reason it fails every time in Civ IV. Go figure.

I am looking to get into a PBEM game though, so if anyone here who got left out would like to try one...

Ye, I know and I already posted the explanation (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=137119) for that in the bug forum. I wonder if it'll be fixed with the first patch next week :p

Yet again, my Player Details mysteriously changed. Please send me an e-mail if the name "Michelle" means anything to you with respect to this game. I have a hypothesis as to the origin of the bug, but I need some feedback to validate it.

Only 2 turns have gone by and I'm already behind in the scoring! Oh, woe is me. *swoons*

A turn every other day...not a bad clip. Although it'll be a month or two before anything interesting happens!

I was messing arround with that and i found that if I send the save game to *@yahoo.com then i do not get the file extention and the file name is cut in half but if I send to *@hotmail everything works fine. So it must be something with the recieving side not my smtp server.

Just played and sent my turn. Heihojin, you came up as DaEezt again, not Michelle. Very odd bug I must say. Are you going to tell us what civ each person is? I thought that was the purpose of us sending you our civs. If you posted it or e-mailed it out I must have missed it. Or does everybody prefer to keep it a secret?

DaEezT

All playes and their civs where listed in the first e-mail:

1. heihojin (Tokugawa of the Japanese)
2. Isildurs Heir (Mansa Musa of the Malinese)
3. Kevinicus (Peter of the Russians)
4. DaEezT (Napoleon of the French)
5. DogBoy (Julius Caesar of the Romans)
6. xenikos (Huayna Capac of the Inca)
7. ceiph (Alexander of the Greeks)
8. stagnate (Hatshepsut of the Egyptians)

Yep, I see that! When I read that e-mail I just looked at the people but not their civs.

Interesting, thanks. That is consistent with my own testing, where turns sent to my personal (non-Yahoo!) e-mail account were just fine.

Yahoo and Gmail have SMTP settings that are currently incompatable with Civ4's. I imagine that will be patched soon.

Game played and sent. It seems Stagnate is in the lead...hmm Does anybody know how the scoring system works in this game? A friend and I are playing a 2 player game and he did NOT settle on the first turn but I did. He settled on the second turn, and he immediately had two more points than I did. Their are two things different between our civs. He is producing more food than I am. We are both on fresh water. He is producing 3 food and 1 hammer, but I am producing 2 food and 2 hammer. We started with different techs due to being different civs. Could he just have higher beaker techs and that's why he has more points?
