This is a thread to organise a PBEM for UK civvers commencing sometime on Friday 4th November (after work for me). This way we can play our first game online without hardened 1-week veterans spoiling things. Since we don't have the game yet I'm unsure as to the exact details we need to figure out but signing up participants would obviously be a start.

Back to work! I'll dip in later.

EDIT:

Here's the procedure:

1) Post when you have the game up and running and are ready to play. Include your chosen Civ and leader and your in-game nickname.

e.g. Enkidu Warrior is ready to go
In-game name: Oukan
Civ: Japan
Leader: Tokugawa

2) Wait for the next 3 or so players then swap e-mail addresses via PM or e-mailing via public profile.

3) Choose game settings. Password protect the game so nobody can cheat.

4) Start playing - I'd suggest manually e-mailing the save file to avoid reported problems with the in-game system. I'll have to do this since my Civ 4 comp is not connected to the net.

5) Post in this thread to let people know how it's going.

6) If you don't get in the first game then feel free to post that you are up and running and wait for other players to join you for a second game.

Oh man, you are an absolute star! Only 2 days to go!

With regards to the in-game e-mail problems people are having it looks like civ does not work with any web based emails (i.e. hotmail) or any email service that requires you to use a username or password to send mail out.

As a suggestion when setting up the game just use you normal email address but for the STMP server use your isp's.

For example: my email address would be fraser@sfbooker.demon.co.uk but my smtp address would be smpt.wanadoo.co.uk as wanadoo supplies my broadband connection.

Apologies in advance if I have confused anyone. Just post here or send me a pm if you want anything cleared up

It just seems self-evident that taking one turn then waiting for the game to be e-mailed around 7 other people will be too slow a process for our first multiplayer game. Like I said, this is for discovering the game alongside other neglected UK players, not stomping to victory or playing an endless epic game.

I've updated my first post with the suggested ground rules. Feel free to suggest ammendments. I'll be up and running about 7pm tommorow - look forward to joining you all.

I got mine today. it was released early in most stores other than Game. I'm really enjoying it, wierd game but great at same time.

As for this multiplayer, is there a way for me to be England in it starting on England? If so, I'm there! I'm great as an isolated isle.

Just got back from work found that i have a parcel to collect and the post collection is closed! So I not gonna get my civ4 until tommorrow morning... :(

Don't worry about it. The beauty of PBEM is that you can take as long as you want. I just wanted to make sure we were up and running.

One question: I noticed that my name appeared twice in the score list, once as the Indians and once as the Greeks :confused:

Is this some kind of bug as I assume the Greek leader should be Enkidu!

Funny because my name appeared twice aswell! Not sure it will affect the actual gameplay, maybe its a minor bug, hopefully fixed by the next patch.

If Beefy and Scowler both saw their own names in place of mine then I'd definately say it was a minor bug (the name for the first player will be tagged as being equal to the name of the current player rather than being fixed like the others). If so then it won't really matter.

I didn't get the attachment in Viper's e-mail, hopefully we'll get that sorted shortly.

Bah well we could restart if you like, and if it happens again lets hope its a minor thing and will be addressed in the patch.

There seem to be a number of threads, both here and at Apolyton, suggesting there is a bug involving player 1 in PBEM, particularly where diplomacy is concerned. I don't know whether this might have some significance here (I assume that you are set up as player 1, Enkidu?), but I'm starting to worry that this might cause problems later on. Since we've only played the first turn and nobody (presumably) stands to lose anything, I'm wondering if it might be better to either postpone the game until the patch is released, or start again, using one of the workarounds that bypasses player 1. Any thoughts?

I'll start it again when I get home from work tomorrow between 6 and 7. If possible, we could then try to get through a few turns in quick succession, that is if you're all available then. If we still run into problems we can abandon it for now.

Good news, it worked this time. I was called Scowler for reasons that I can't begin to imagine but I've changed my name back using alt-D so hopefully it will stay that way. I've e-mailed the next save to Beefy.

I don't know whether it makes any difference, but previously I was loading the saved game directly from Windows by double-clicking on it. For this turn, I went into Civ first and loaded it from there - could that be why my name wasn't duplicated this time? Oh, and in Civilization4.ini there has been an entry "GameName = Stephen" ever since our first attempt. Annoyingly it kept coming back, no matter how many times I returned it to the original setting, even after I deleted the PBEM folder and save and replaced the ini file. It has now finally changed to "GameName = UK PBEM".

Have other people been experiencing this problem? As long as we don't get any more crazy jumps in turns then I don't mind my name getting messed up. Also, has anyone had to enter a password? I got into my game without one, but then mine is the profile that keeps going haywire. I added it again using alt-D but I have a funny feeling I'll be BeefBayford come next turn. Bizarre :crazyeye:

:mad: Apparently, as well as having multiple-personality disorder, whoever gets the player 1 spot will be unable to trade with anyone.

There is a workaround, but it would require us to start again (again). I'll leave it up to the rest of you. I don't mind continuing - I'll just have to dedicate myself to WAR! :devil: :sniper: :ninja: :hammer: :whipped: :spank: :evil:

Starting with player 1 as AI is a good idea. The other possibility (assuming that it actually is imminent) is to wait for the patch - the reasoning being that, apart from potentially resolving the current issues, it is possible that any game we start now will become unstable or even unusable once we install the patch, forcing yet another restart (I think something like that happened with one of the Civ3 patches). Any views on this? I'm happy to go with whatever the majority chooses.

New game created. First player was human but then deleted (I heard that using an AI civ didn't work). Passwords = in-game names as before. First save sent.

I have tried putting 'Viper' as password, got through as Saladin. I then quickly clicked 'end turn' and a file is then created to send to myself. I then loaded it, I started exactly the same spot as the game before. I therefore suspect you have sent me an older file.

The file you should be sending is in your Saves/PBEM/UK PBEM 3/ folder.

6:00 - 7:00 Friday and Saturday would be ideal for me, but i don't know about you guys.

Hey guys, just got back from Italy (for work) and can't believe I haven't receive the game yet!!! Come on guys, we have to make sure we sent the right one! Must admit it is quite easy to send the wrong one as all of them have very similar names. WE just have to be careful and make sure we have deleted the old one. The correct file is always in your My Document in the form of:

C:\Documents and Settings\Chuanster\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Saves\pbem\UK PBEM 3\

and the filename, automatically created by Civ4 should be in the form of:

Chuanster_to_Enkidu Warrior_BC-3950.Civ4SavedGame

Name of the sender and recipient and more importantly the year should be in the file name and hence if we are careful, we shouldn't get it wrong!

Yes, I really want to get at least one game up and running beyond the first few turns, and you guys have certainly demonstrated the necessary perseverance and interest.

Just post your Civ and leader choice (the rest can be changed in-game via alt-D). Also, make sure you're patched up to 1.09 since that fixes the big PBEM bug.

Lets hope we're successful this time!

I don't think so. You'll be able to tell though since the game automatically puts the save in the folder called UK PBEM 4. I'm sorry, I just put them in the order I remembered them.

Just checked my files, and the last save I sent to you was BC3900. So I'm waiting for Chuanster_to_Scowler_BC3900 (as I am at the end of the turn order). I'm assuming from Chuanster's post that this is the one that has been sent, and which I am missing.

I'll ignore BC3950 and wait for the new save. Thankfully things aren't too bad at the moment, but it will be very confusing if this game catches up with the other one and you end up having to send two separate saves with exactly the same filename!

There is of course a simple and elegant solution to your confusion - just press alt-D and give yourself a different name in one of the games.

Yes, Viper has both this game and the other one I'm playing and has vanished from the face of the Earth :(
