View Full Version : New world map - upscaled Europe
RobSoyka Nov 04, 2005, 01:34 PM New Map, based on Rhye's Map
Changes:
-Europe has been upscaled a little bit, so there is now enough Space for some citys for each of the european civilisations.
-Europe is now much more detailed. Rivers, mountain ridges are on the correct place now.
-Some minor changes on other continents as well
All civilisations start with
-One City or one Settler
-One Warrior
-One worker
-One scout
Would be a good base for europe-centered global scenarios like World War I or World War II
Screenshot: Western Part of Europe. City names are just for the screenshot for better imagination.
RobSoyka Nov 04, 2005, 01:37 PM -Here is the download, Version II
Version II
-Civs have now english names instead of german ones. Please inform me in case of misspelling.
-Southern Tip of South America ( Argentina an Chile ) is now manly tundra, but patagonia between Fireland and Pampa is still desert ( As in real world, according to my maps. )
-Territory of China improved: more details, better reflection of mountain ridges, Rivers...
Version III
-Much more Resources on italian peninsula, greece and balcans
( Giving them a better start )
-More Resources in Europe, especialy stone and marble
-French Civ is now french not französisch, King is Louis not Ludwig
-Relocated chinese starting loacation one tile eastwards
-More Silk and dye in china
Version IV
-Corrected all translations
-Ended Starting Contact between Empires
I am the Future Nov 04, 2005, 03:20 PM Screenie PLease?
Ghost Nov 04, 2005, 04:32 PM sound awsome thanks but how big is it?
Elhoim Nov 04, 2005, 10:34 PM Great map!! I don´t know why Rhye didn´t do it like this one!!
I only have a few complaints:
- All the civ´s are in german!!
- The Patagonia, America´s sourthern tip, it is not desert, but tundra instead!
- And I think Scandinavia´s south part and Europe shouldn´t connect...
Anyway, these are very small issues for me, but the map is uber-great!!!
BulMaster Nov 05, 2005, 09:23 AM Hehe way too many reichs, good map as soon as I finish rhye's will give that one a go. Looks good in the builder. Then again i might wait for the patch to fix my epic game crashes in later eras ...
RobSoyka Nov 05, 2005, 03:19 PM @Elhoim
I only have a few complaints:

Oh, Sorry, did not know you get the Civ names from my german version...
I will change this.
- The Patagonia, America´s sourthern tip, it is not desert, but tundra instead!
Yes, you are right. I did not do much autside Europe, North Asia ( Siberia is now mainly tundra instead of Grasland ) and North-America. Will be changed.
- And I think Scandinavia´s south part and Europe shouldn´t connect...
Ideas behind this:
1. If someone builds a city on the danish peninsula or southern tip of Scandinavia, he/she controles the entrace to baltic sea. Same is for Istanbul and the black sea.
2. The land bridge allows german AI or player to settle Scandinavia. Berlin is not situated at the coast, so it cant build ships. Else it is often settled by the russians, which are forced to settle more eastwards that way. At least I hope so...
But you can open the baltic sea within a few seconds with the world builder.
Corey Nov 06, 2005, 02:39 AM tnx for the fix!I'll give it a try now.
DeadZoneMDx Nov 06, 2005, 07:09 AM Possible for someone to post a screenie please?
annfinnt Nov 06, 2005, 08:23 AM Hay,
How come that when I play one of these user created maps; starting a user-created map rearly works, my PC slows down and loading the game again does not work.
But when I play a normal game, with some map that was shipped with the org. game, it works great, no problems...
Known bug or?
Please help! :cry:
RobSoyka Nov 06, 2005, 10:41 AM These maps are huge. may be your computer cant handle them...
I have got 2400 MHz, 1000 MB RAM and the PC needs About a minute to switch from Isometric view to global view...
One more screenshot: Eastern Part of "what could become USA one day"
Stormbringer Nov 06, 2005, 10:47 AM Ok, so maybe I will get an answer here since I seem to have been ignored in the other thread: Is there any way to play a multiplayer game on this map, like a hot seat game?

Your maps are both right and wrong. The area is arid like a desert but frigid as in tundra. Since civIV does not have an arid and frozen desert use what you think. The Gobi desert in Asia is much the same. :crazyeye:

Should be able too, dont see why not (though not tried MP in Civ4), make sure other players have the map as well (to be safe)

Its not that... My PC crashes when I load every user-made maps/mods, but not when I load the ones that comes with the game, those pre-made maps. Nor the random maps ingame. :(
RobSoyka Nov 07, 2005, 02:15 PM Never had problems loading user maps. May bee some incompatibility with some drivers, Hardware ... whatsoever. May be a case for the bug reporting?
Unfortunatly I can not help you. I'am not a computer nerd :borg:, just a german student of geography :coffee:
"Your maps are both right and wrong. The area is arid like a desert but frigid as in tundra. Since civIV does not have an arid and frozen desert use what you think. The Gobi desert in Asia is much the same. "
Yes, temperature is not very well modelled in CIV IV. There is even no destinction between
temperated grassland ( with cold winters ) and savannah...
Just "Wet" = Grasland, "semiarid" = Plains/Steppe and "Arid"=Desert
So Berlin has same kind of Terrain as Lagos or Manila.
@Multi player
I also dont know how to use these maps in multy player. Would realy like to know how to import them to multi player mod.

Click new scenario instead of new game. The map has to be in the world builder folder in saves, atleast that's where it is for me and that way it will appear on the list of scenarios. Bear in mind that you will send the map to everyone who joins the game. So if you don't want to generate useless upload pick the people before starting the game or something.
Edit: Also unless you want to play with 18 players you will need to edit the map in world builder to fix the number of civs and maybe the starting locations. If you decide to have 6 people and all pick european civs, this could lead to interesting colonial warfare to say the least.
jayho Nov 08, 2005, 10:44 PM Thanks for your great work! Being a Chinese, I especially appreciate the changes u have made for the Chinese region. There is just one problem: I have modified the color for all the nations (under the folder Civilization 4\Assets\XML\Civilizations\CIV4CivilizationInfos) and it works well with any other scenarios except for this one (each nation's color is different from what I preset). Do u know why and how to fix that? Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is what you want, but if you open the file using a notepad, you will see that each civilization will have an entry
BeginPlayer
...
Color=PLAYERCOLOR_PURPLE (for example)
...
EndPlayer
You can try changing those I guess.
Qienchi Nov 09, 2005, 02:11 AM I'd like to add that the map has MaxTurns set to 430 so if you play an epic game, the game will end around 1750 ish. Epic mode has 650 turns as opposed to Normal mode's 430 turns. I finally played a game that was competitive enough until the 1600s when I got the 100 turns left message :mad:
having said that ... thanks a lot for the map, I haven't played any random map since I tried this one :).
What do people think about map balance and all? I feel (unsure though) that this map has a lot less resources than the standard Earth one, so civs with lots of space to expand tend to dominate (Russia, Persia, China/India), while the Europeans one always stay at the bottom (especially poor Greek). Then again I don't know if adding resources in Europe would help this in any way (but hey, historically Europe was pretty damn backward pre-renaissance compared to the rest of the world).
I played one game which I thought was reasonably balanced with only England, Germany, Spain and Greek in Europe. (Greek got squashed still - I think it's a problem with their starting city)

Yes, there is some need for balancing
There is also a problem with Rome - they need to long to build a settler and so always fail to settle first at the location of Milano. It is always occupied by france, which becomes a european powerhouse - controling stones and marble, that way getting a lots of wonders first.
I found out that there is not enough marble and stone in Europe. I will fix that.
Greece made a poor start as well, but then settled balcan and black sea area.
All in all Europe made quite well.
First place: Me -germany, occupying middle europe, scandinavia, baltic shores ( after a war with russia, that had settled Finland )
Second was france, with half douzend wonders and technological equal to me. I dont know how they did this with only 3 Citys... but they were all huge citys indeed. I've never seen a Pop-18-City in Middle ages before....
England was fifth or so.
China had some trouble with japan, india or mongols, ending as one of the smallest civs. I think they had more potential. Just bad luck.
Qienchi Nov 09, 2005, 06:04 PM I tried playing Germany - and I notice if you build the starting city near where Munich is, you get 2 pigs, 2 cows, 1 stone, 1 wheat, possibly enough culture to expand to get 1 silver (although beyond the city's tile), and you block others from going to Scandinavia.
It was a juggernaut of a city!
RobSoyka Nov 10, 2005, 04:52 AM Version III out now. Informations and download at Beginnig of the thread.
Bollox Nov 10, 2005, 12:25 PM Question. What are the victory conditions of this map?
I got home DL it. when I clicked to start the downlod to my PC it opened the game up. I never got to pick the conditions of victory. I just go to pick my Civ and the difficulty and time and stuff so i assume its all the game type victories? If so that sucks ; ;
alireza1354 Nov 10, 2005, 01:02 PM Very cool map! But unplayable in the long run.
RobSoyka Nov 14, 2005, 03:42 AM Very cool map! But unplayable in the long run.
Depends on the Power of your computer. It works fine on my PC, even if turns need a minute or two.

Had same problems, till I realized UNCLE BILL, an the redmond crew were trying to run my computer, went in to the Bios and reset every thing on Video card Windon't reset. Also try double clicking on mod from worldbuilder file.

I was talking about playing the map on MP. (multiplayer)
These are my system specs:
Pentium 4 CPU 3.4 Ghz
3.39 GHz 1.00 GB of RAM
Believe me, this pc is more than adequate to deal with the game. But the integrated MP system is not good enough to deal with MP games and these kind of maps. Hope the next patch will fix that.
Greetings :)
Elhoim Nov 16, 2005, 06:06 PM There are still some names that are not like the english version. Here they are: Japanese Empire, German Empire, Mongolian Empire, Malinese Empire, Incan Empire, Aztec Empire.

RobSoyka Dec 11, 2005, 03:26 AM I started playing this map as the Spanish and found that I had contact with America already on the first turn. :eek:
Mhhh... very mysterious. I will change this.
PS:
Changed now. No empire has contact to another empire in the beginning any longer.
Any more Problems?

Bast Dec 11, 2005, 03:37 AM Thanks. :) This is a good map. I like a larger Spain. Rhye's one had hardly any room to move for Isabella. :) I'll give this a try again.

Open the World-Builderfile Save File with an editor.
You will find lines like this:
BeginPlayer
Team=0
LeaderType=LEADER_HATSHEPSUT
LeaderName=Hatshepsut
CivDesc=Egyptian Empire
CivShortDesc=Egypt
CivAdjective=Egyptian
FlagDecal=Art/Interface/TeamColor/FlagDECAL_EyeOfRa.dds
WhiteFlag=0
CivType=CIVILIZATION_EGYPT
Color=PLAYERCOLOR_YELLOW
ArtStyle=ARTSTYLE_MIDDLE_EAST
PlayableCiv=1
MinorNationStatus=0
StartingGold=0
StartingX=69, StartingY=37
StateReligion=
StartingEra=ERA_ANCIENT
CivicOption=CIVICOPTION_GOVERNMENT, Civic=CIVIC_DESPOTISM
CivicOption=CIVICOPTION_LEGAL, Civic=CIVIC_BARBARISM
CivicOption=CIVICOPTION_LABOR, Civic=CIVIC_TRIBALISM
CivicOption=CIVICOPTION_ECONOMY, Civic=CIVIC_DECENTRALIZATION
CivicOption=CIVICOPTION_RELIGION, Civic=CIVIC_PAGANISM
Handicap=HANDICAP_NOBLE
EndPlayer
Interesting to you:
LeaderType=LEADER_HATSHEPSUT
This file effects Animation, Leader characteristics and AI-Behavior
Look for the spelling of the names!
LeaderName=Hatshepsut
CivDesc=Egyptian Empire
CivShortDesc=Egypt
CivAdjective=Egyptian
This are the names shown during the game.
FlagDecal=Art/Interface/TeamColor/FlagDECAL_EyeOfRa.dds
The map the empire uses
WhiteFlag=0
Not sure about that.
CivType=CIVILIZATION_EGYPT
The Civ.
Color=PLAYERCOLOR_YELLOW
The civ colour.
ArtStyle=ARTSTYLE_MIDDLE_EAST
The look of the citys.
how to chage diplomatic contact from the map ( who know who) ?
Open the World-Builderfile Save File with an editor. There will be lines for every Team like that for team 5:
BeginTeam
Tech=TECH_AGRICULTURE
Tech=TECH_HUNTING
ContactWithTeam=5
RevealMap=0
EndTeam
( Means: team knows itself, no one else)
copy and paste, then fill in th team you want. Then you get something like that:
BeginTeam
Tech=TECH_AGRICULTURE
Tech=TECH_HUNTING
ContactWithTeam=5
ContactWithTeam=6
RevealMap=0
EndTeam
(Means Team knows istself and Team 6 now)
HOw to resize the map..?
Use the World builder - but you would just get a clear map or a random map.
I changed the existing map manually, Europe is bigger now, but Atlantic ocean is smaller. Map size has not changed.
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP:goodjob:
Thanks!
aronk76 Dec 27, 2005, 08:10 PM I like this mod so far but I was wondering if there is a way I can get just the map out of this so I can select what civs I want, etc. Like when you go into custom game you can select the different maps. Is there a way I can have this one as a selection without all 18 civs playing?
puglover Dec 30, 2005, 09:49 PM This is a great map, Rob. I downloaded and am having a blast recreating history as Persia. :)
My only complaint about gameplay is that Russia, as in many earth maps, seems somewhat overpowered by its location on the edge of Europe, free to expand. This isn't a big problem though, and probably doesn't need correction.
Second, there are two misspellings. Athens is spelled Athen, making the Greeks found two cities named "athens". Julius Caesar is spelled Julius Cesar in the map as well, which is not that big but just a bit annoying.
Very good map, tons of fun. :goodjob:

Sorry that it took me so long to answer. I had a lots of stress in University and my Job.
That is no real misspelling, the map has been made with the german version of the game. It is german spelling, simply not yet translated into english...
I will change this.
Shqype Jan 18, 2006, 02:06 AM Can you provide a screenshot of the Balkan region please, including Italy?
Pipoufle Jan 18, 2006, 06:54 AM Great map really.
Only one comment : as other earth maps, there is no horses at all in north America. As far as I know, native north americans used to have horses no ? Why not putting horses in the great plains of north America ?

On this point, a tip could be the following : at the start, with the world builder, remove all units from a civ you don't want, except one worker (or scout,...). This civ will not impact the game and disapear by it self at a moment or another ;)

The native Americans had no horses until they meet the european conquistadores or settlers. There is even a myth that some tribes first thought that the Horseman and the horse are one single creature :eek: and this was the reason they were so frightened by them.
Later the natives in north america adopted the horesmenship and some tribes became fantastic horsemen.

Shqype Jan 21, 2006, 11:10 AM haha, I see you put down my northern Albanian mountain ranges :goodjob:
This is great for a world map but unfortunately not useful for my scenarios ... I have a few scenarios in mind, one which focuses on primarily the Balkans, one which focuses on Italy, the Balkans, Hungary, and Turkey, and another which focuses primarily on Albania and Montenegro.
If you're interesting in helping out by creating some maps for me, I could give you "satellite" pictures of the areas I need done and a more in depth explanation.

I would realy like to help you, but I lack the time to do so.
But you can use my map and change it the way it fits your scenarios, of course.
Shqype Jan 22, 2006, 01:20 PM I understand and appreciate your lack of time. I hope you continue your studies and perform well.
However, for my scenarios the area I would need is much too small on this map... I would need to "zoom in" alot to make several cities for each small balkan country that can only fit 1 or so. But If I need a template or inspiration, I'll look to your map. Thanks :)
