- Can a Great Merchant enter territories that you don't have a border agreement with?

- Is is better to get the Great Merchant to enter a territory that is further away but poorer OR a bit closer and richer? i.e. what is valued more in the calculation?

Thanks

1. No
2. As the manual says, rich and far away is best. What the exact influence of both factors is...well I guess we will have to wait until someone figures it out...

Actually, my Great Merchant just entered territory of a Civ I had no border agreements with, so I think as long as you are not at war, you'll be able to get your guy in any city.

On a huge world map setting, a cross-the-globe trade mission net me 4.5k gold. Pretty good, eh?

I had 2 great merchants. One went to a city on the other side of my continent it was a size 13 capital and netted me 2.5K
Another one I put in a boat and sailed to the other continent and did the mission in a size 11 capital and only netted me 1.7K

From now on I look for purely huge cities.

It's like in CIV1 with Caravans:
- examine top5 cities.
- send him to highest rank city that doesn't belong to you

Yeah, its some combo of size and distance with an emphasis on size.

I netted about 2.5K as well for a size 11 capital on the other side of the world (another continent)
