I've reformatted this front post to make it easier for everyone to find what they'd like. This should be a great help to anyone who has gotten lost in it just because of how massive it was. All categories are bolded and what they have is hidden for convenience. This way you can find what you want faster. Anything that has been changed recently has been marked by *Revised* to make it easier for you to find what's been changed, and all screenshots have been redone so that they preview, but go full sized when clicked on, so that it's easier scrolling through this front post. Also, I encourage anyone intensely interested to look at my public notice.

Public notice to fanatics *Revised*

As a notice to the community, I am no longer able to support this mod for a while, with August 2006 as the latest date that I'll be able to mod again. However, when this date occurs, I won't necessarily continue support for this project, as I'd like to move on to something else, preferably with lots and lots of code. So, at this point in time, anyone who would like to continue to improve this mod is invited to. I'm lurking around constantly and won't post much in the next half year or more, but will gladly put your changes on the front post here alongside 2.1 (for the sole reason that I won't be able to check to see what you've done). Eventually I will be back, and with an even better project.

I am currently studying an easy workload (18 credits, with only 6 of those credits being material that I don't already know extensively, and ) with 3 of those credits in studying world religions and their influence, and the other 3 being dedicated to balancing my eurocentric history education.

What religions are included: *Revised*

1. McDonald's (replaces Christianity)
2. Burger King (replaces Islam)
3. Baskin Robbins (replaces Judaism)
4. Krispy Kreme (replaces Buddism)
5. Starbucks (replaces Hinduism)
6. KFC (replaces Confuscianism)
7. Taco Bell (replaces Taoism)

Note: Here's a second draft pick if anyone is interested in making it. They will be

1. Pizza Hut (Hinduism)
2. Wendy's (Christianity anyone?)
3. Subway (Confucianism)
4. Arby's (Islam)
5. Dunkin' Donuts (Buddism)
6. Dairy Queen (Judaism)
7. Chick-fil-A (Taoism)

If you think that there should be changes to this second draft list, or if you would like to do it, please feel free to post.

Full:

Fast Food 2.1 (http://www.civfanatics.net/downloads/civ4/graphics/Fast_Food_2.1.zip)(8.44 MB)

Note: The CivFanatics link is now up.

Update:

I changed almost everything, so an update version would be silly.

Screenshots: *Revised*

Note: These mini screenshots can be enlarged by clicking on them. This was done for two reasons. One, it reduces bandwidth. Two, it makes this subsection much easier to navigate. Enjoy!

For 2.1:

Here's a screenshot that shows that I've made the Religious Advisor screen look much cleaner and a few of the text cleanups so as to make the dialogue much more bearable:

http://photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/th_Civ4ScreenShot0014.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/Civ4ScreenShot0014.jpg)

This screenshot shows off that I have truely fixed the other gamefont file, for all those unbelievers:
http://photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/th_Civ4ScreenShot0018.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/Civ4ScreenShot0018.jpg)

This screenshot shows off the new religion founding movies. NOTE: this could be changed later to make them look better in the game. It's not final at this point.
http://photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/th_Civ4ScreenShot0017.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/Civ4ScreenShot0017.jpg)

For 2.0:

This screenshot shows that resizing dark religious icons works. Taco Bell and Burger King probably will be enhanced in the future.
http://photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/th_Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg)

This screenshot shows that regular religious icons are resizeable in this instance. However, this seems to be the only Civilopedia part in which resized icons DO look good. As a side note, I dropped the higher resolution regular religious icons because I wanted it to look good everywhere.
http://photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/th_Civ4ScreenShot0002.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/Civ4ScreenShot0002.jpg)

And this screenshot shows that I still have a lot to learn about where some religious icons are. These ones are being very elusive and I hope they're not accidently hardcoded (It's hard to say as about half of the art seems to be orphaned,)
http://photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/th_Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg)

And this is another example of the previous screenshot.

Previous Versions:

All previous versions have gone the way of the dinosaur and are no longer supported. However, if for some odd reason that you'd like to see one, PM me. I offer two choices: get the entire 1.0 branch or get 2.0. However, they are inferior to the current version and are not as exciting as the current verion. Check that one out first.

How to Install and Run This Mod:

To install, extract the contents to your mods folder (by default, c:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Mods)

To run this mod, load up the game after installing it and click on the Advanced option. From here, click on Load A Mod. Choose Fast Food. The game will reload. From here, do things as you would normally.

What to do if you intend to use this mod to make your own: *Revised*

1.a. Use the files from the game instead of mine.

This is what I did to start with. From messing around with the files, I found out what everything does. I chose the religious aspect, because I thought that it would have long spreading tentacles within the game that would eventually make me have to see what everything does to do it. I wanted to know because I didn't want to wait and see how things interacted once I'd be able to play Civ4. I'm not going to support it forever, as I'd like to move on at some point, and that I've got a professional career to think about. Anyways, you shouldn't be modding the Fast Food religion mod, you should be modding Civ4.

1.b. Use my files to see what can (and should) be changed. Be origional with your own creations.

I'd like to see some origionality. Maybe this sounds strange to anyone who just wants to throw one of these together over the weekend, but I really think that each of these mods should be able to have their own distinction with how the text interacts together. Everyone's got their own origional flair, and by not using your own text, the mods seem to feel second rate.

2. Only release what you've worked on.

So you've decided to work on your own mod and have yet to find out how things work. By doing it yourself, you'll find out ten times more than you would by just copying what I've done.

3. Test it out to make sure it works.

This can be very crucial. I consider myself to be very nitpicky on making sure that no errors can be found whatsoever in anything that I do. However, on rare occasions, I do make mistakes. When I do, I try to resolve them the instance that I notice them. That's why I'm taking so long in releasing 2.0. Now that I can test it in game, I want to make sure that everything does what I intend it to do.

4. Make screenshots if you can play Civ4.

This was what made my mod slow to catch on. The fact is that if you want people to play it, you're going to have to release screenshots. This wasn't too big of a priority of my own when I couldn't play it myself. I basically thought that there wasn't a reason of why someone else shouldn't be able to and that they should have to wait to be able to do this.

5. Never consider modding a religion out a "weekend project".

Civ4 is HUGE! You wouldn't believe how HUGE it is. Even for replacing minor stuff, there's usually a lot of artwork involved. You can at least expect to spend a couple of weeks putting together all the artwork. Just remember that it's going to take a little work to get what you want done.

6. If you have any questions, consult the religion addition guide that I made, make a thread to try to get help, and if that doesn't resolve it, PM me.

Consult here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=3508368) first. I know it's long and not a short read, but I hope that I covered it extensively enough there to be able to answer nearly any questions that I could get. Come January 1st, I will no longer be able to look at Civ4 files, so to help others out, I decided to do a guide. Consult this first, but if you have a question that it doesn't resolve, PM me and I will try to help you the best I can through memory.

Sorry about the confusion guys. This started out in another thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=137967), as an idea, but then turned into a mod. I was pressed for time when I posted it here and needed to leave extremely quick at 5 or so Saturday, so I apologize for any confusion this might have caused. Also, with as fast as it was put together, I've already thought of some minor mistakes or improvements that can be done. A new version will be posted shortly.

EDIT: Posted. See the top of the thread.

Thankyou so much for this mod. First test was Custom Game as the Spanish. It loaded without a glitch!

As always, I start learning the techs that give me religions. By about 960AD I had founded all of them and was spreading the word of Macdonald's and KFc like wildfire. It was hilarious, I sent a Missionary to spread the word to the French, who I had Open Borders with at the time, and 14 turns later it reaches Paris and spreads the word about Bic Macs and Fires!

I have no real complains, as I was too busy laughing each time I founded them. Madrid was the Holy City of the World! Here's a few suggestions:

1. Have a look around for ideas and instructions on making the videos used when you found a religion. Somehow I don't think that bread and wine are linked to Macdonald's... Even simple ones where you show a static picture of a Bic Mac for example would be alright.

2. Have a go at changing the approporiate units and buildings, escpecially the Holy Buildings. Some research to where the first franchised store was run would help. Graphics are not a bother to me, just names.

3. Change the "You have founded ~religion~" to "You have franchised ~religion~". It just makes more sense.

4. Some research into which franchise was made first could help you to place them with the right tech.

5. If possible, fiddle with the appropriate sounds. If you can, get the tunes used on the TV ads and find a way to make them work in the game. It would be funny to hear the tunes everytime a city or civ converts to that franchise. :)

All in all, a great mod to play with. I apologise if any of my suggestions sound harsh, they aren't meant to be. I would happily test any future versions for you. Or, if you want, you could tell me to shut up and stop nitpicking your great ideas.

I also intend to change "Great Prophet" to "Promotional Campaign", "Great CEO", or "Great Product". Also, renaming temples to their business names, and naming missionaries "PR Representitives". I haven't quite worked that out yet, but I will.

I'd also like to change Civilopedia icons to pictures of the restaurants. However, that may not come too quickly. Ultimately, I'd like it to be seamless, but I'm not great at doing movies (I also don't know how at the moment, and, if it's the way I think it is, I won't be able to do it... You MAY have to request this from someone who has the $1500 software or so to do these). Maybe I can find the sounds online by visiting corporate sites or such. Thanks for the feedback. Maybe another update will be posted later this week/next week.

I've done some minor text improvements. When it's uploaded, I'll have it at the top of the page. (BTW, when the franchises were founded wasn't a consideration that I made when I fist made this. It still isn't that important to me. It's more of the humor with me.)

EDIT: Weakciv, were you refering to this? (http://www.americanangst.com/burgerking.swf) Maybe I can find an WAV of it or so. It seems too long to use, but it could always be cut down.

That would be great Atrius! As I posted above, I don't have the game working, so this is my way of having fun with it.

Now, on to my thoughts that kept me up half the night:

For version 1.1, -1 health will be added to temples (they will be renamed to stuff like "Taco Bell Express" or so), monestaries, and cathedrals. The national wonders for religion will have a -5% global health (I thought that -70% for having all of them was a little harsh, -35% is livable, I think), so that it can accurately portray fast food's effects on society (and be a little humorous about it too). Also, I'm thinking of editing the building icons.

For version 1.5, there may be a little more text editing, along with the pictures for the civilopedia

Version 2.0 will have a cash register replace the bell sound, and have these sounds correspond to each "religion"

Ideally:
McDonalds- "Would you like fries with that?"
Burger King - ?
Baskin Robbins- exaggerated cow (or a cat's meow, in case the cows ever unionize and demand $5.25 an hour ($7.50 in California) granted to workers underneath the minimum wage law of 1997. Union breakers would employ Siamese cats to replace the workforce for 10 cents an hour where 50 cats (75 in California) could easily outperform one cow. This would incite riots in Washington that would bring in PETA, the ACLU, and the obscurely known Bovine Beterment Coalition (made that up). They then rename "whole milk" to "freedom milk", "skim milk" to "freedom" (to attract the 12 to 26 core demographic who believe it's better for them, and because of the "hip" name) and rotten milk to "freedom curds". The rioting would prompt the FBI, the USDA, and the NRA to investigate the matter, and top cow leaders would be assasinated. The rest of them are swept up underneath the patriot act and held indefinately. This would balance the unequivocable economic suppy and demand of milk and, inevitably, bring prices down.)
4. Krispy Kreme- Homer Simpson's "Mmm... Donuts."
5. Starbucks- ?
6. KFC- An exagerated chicken squak
7. Taco Bell- "ˇAye, Chihuahua!" (Origionally thought of "Yo quiero Taco Bell", but I thought this would be funnier)

If I get to 2.0 before 1.5, it will still be called 2.0, because I consider the sounds to be a huge undertaking, and 1.5 would then be called 2.1. Just as a side note, the cow story is longer, as I kept adding to it and laughing my head off about it. I just made it short enough so that people might not get lost in world affairs.

OK, thanks for the support KingTux. I had a look at your files, but I couldn't find anything that resembles where you change the text. I will be honoured to test any newer versions you release.

My XML skills are poor, so I will continue to research before I have a go at changing a few aspects.

I have a new version to post, but the upload page seems to be laggy, so I'll post the full version soon, bur right now, you'll only be able to get the update version. It's got some art improvements and some tech tree icons (552 KB. Soon it should be in the megabytes...). The update is 392 KB. Next week, I should have the game working, and some screenshots might be in order, but I'm planning on doing yet another version between now and then. I'm continually finding more and more about what I can do for the religions. However, this learning curve could go a lot faster by actually being able to play it. After about 2.0 or so on my projected timeline, I expect some slow downs, as I'm going to do some art by hand, which could be VERY time consuming.

I'm probably putting 10 or so hours towards it a week at the moment. Some art that I'm looking at may take me 30-50 hours to hand make similar quality art. However, after the first, it SHOULD only take 2 or 3 hours for any similar artwork. At the moment, I don't really have to hand make anything on their massive scale, and I'm able to take most of the art from the web. I expect a complete stop on developement come January, then a huge boost come August or so, due to specific circunmstantial college adjustments that I expect to happen. Hopefully, I'll leave this project in fairly good status. When I do come back then, I expect to be doing some python scripting (entirely capable at the moment, but not too much time), 3D modeling (I am average, as in I'm not near professional standards, but it doesn't look like crap either. I currently don't have the tools to do so, but might get them later) and doing a much more ambitious project, to be revealed later at my own leisure, with a couple megabyte PDF file outlining my goals with that mod.

Anyways, I apologise for not getting the full yet, but this should be enough to give feedback on some of my recent changes. I'd like to know:

-How well the tech tree icons blend in (I already know that Burger King and Baskin Robbins look like crap. I'm going to put better ones in possibly this week, provided that I can find what I want. Personnally, I think the Starbucks one looks awesome, but if you guys don't like it, I've got an alternative lined up)?
-How does the cash register sound do for a substitute for the religion conversion sound?
- What do you think of my Confusion, Buddist, and Taoist sounds (subject to change, some of them need a LOT of work, but sound really isn't my thing)? Does the Buddist Dink that I included play during the founding of that religion? I found artwork similar to the era changing artwork. Is this what is used?
- How well does -1 health to Temples and Monestaries balance?
- How does the -5% Global Health to Cathedrals balance?
-Should I do similar penalties to Shrines?
- Is there any text that I have missed (besides holy city. I left that alone because everyone seems to like it that way) in the text area? Is there any improvements that I can make to them?
- How well do my religious icons blend in? I'm continually improving upon my alpha layering. At some point or other, I've replaced alphas for 6 of the 7 religions after I've noticed through much trial and error exactly how I think they look (white has been terrible for visibility if transparancies for me). Are they significantly better? Is there anything that still needs to be improved (like Taco Bell. I'm kind of concerned about how that looks)?
- Is there anything that I haven't mentioned yet in previous posts that could be done (no 3d at the moment. I MIGHT tackle skins if I get a little more confident with them, but I don't want to try them if I can't see how it will look ahead of time. So, don't expect to see any skins until after/when 2.0 comes out.)? Is there anything that can be done to make the mod smoother? What do you like about this mod?

Any input would be very much appreciated.

I have finally put up the full 1.1 version. Feel free to help yourself. I honestly don't know how many people are following this mod, as I'm not posting in-game screenshots, but if you're playing it, feel free to post your own. It's going to be at least one more version before I can do it personally, so if you have your own, you might be able to bring this mod more attention.

I've recently considered doing the movies, but I'm going to explain my mistrusts with doing so:

The religion movies within Civ4 consist of 3 parts: the NIF (3D model), the DDS (skin), and the music (I think this is the Dink. Feedback will help me know for sure). All other movies are called from BIK files, with nothing else even close to this. It seems that the "movie" is called in /assets/xml/art/CIV4ArtDefines_Movie.xml. The sound comes from /assets/xml/audio/AudioDefines.xml, and this file makes me think that I've got my ordinary religion sounds mixed up with my Dinks. Most likely, I think that maybe I can make a BIK and then define it like the rest of the movies, and be alright. However, Because they're the only movies within the game that use this logic, I'm not entirely certain that this is what I need. So, for now, I think I'll leave this untouched until I can see for myself exactly what's going on. If anyone has considered doing them, this should explain what you need to know. I hope that explaination helps whomever would like to know.

Version 1.5 is going to be delayed... It's on schedule and all, but my graphic card is failing so I can only use the computer in 15 minute intervals (VERY annoying. However, I fortunately have a graphics card coming either today or tomorrow. Thank you Civ4 for saving my butt.) If it wasn't for this, I would be on schedule and be able to release it early next week. So, this might be the last version that I work on a specific timetable with, and I'm not promising 2.0 anymore (2.0 should have just about everything, if done). After 1.5, I'll be taking a couple of weeks to thouroughly document my next project: Heroes of Magic (Basically a rip off of Masters Of Magic with a couple other things to make it like a Master of Magic 3. I'm going to be more creative with races, though, using mythology galore). Here's a preview (this was a quick 15 minute sketch, I can do better. It's only to show the general look, while keeping options open for others to do what they'd like with it. Also, my scanner is slightly dirty.)

Just checking. It's too early to say the other one. As for 1.5, it's not going to be released until sometime after Thanksgiving. If I wasn't having technical problems, it would be here. After it comes out, all that will be left is religious movies, shrine pictures, and sound effects. If you've already got it, this update should be very easy on your downloading speed, as all that has been worked on is brand new. However, you can consider yourself lucky if I release it ahead of the modified release schedule and deliver it on Thanksgiving. The other mod will be officially announced later and the preview that I did give was done as an apology for my technical problems. Just know that the next version will be coming soon.

This was already suggested in post #11 (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=3287857&postcount=11).

I still don't have my graphics card, but as of yesterday, the computer is stable and it went from dial-up to high speed. So, now there's not an excuse to check web sites every now and then (and get a little work done). When the graphic card comes, I'll be able to see firsthand what's going on, so it's bound to improve. Today, I'm thinking of picking up where I left off last week, and possibly release it next week. Basically, this whole graphic card issue has cost me a week of developement, as I was getting close to polishing it off.

EDIT: Happy Thanksgiving! Version 1.5 is here! See the first post in a minute or two for the link

Next week, I should be able to scrounge up some screenshots, but as of today, I still haven't played Civ4. As for asking for help, the mod is small enough that I can handle it myself. I'm an old schooler with graphics and am currently working on a secret something (almost spilled the beans on the next version. If I do everything the way I have it planned, the next release will be BIG!). I can do some stuff that you just don't see anymore (for instance, when I was modding Civ3, I got a lot of stirs about me being able to make my tech tree screens look like the default tech screen, arrow wise. What I'm working on right now could get the same sort of reaction). I never intend to do any 3D modeling and will probably discontinue support on it come January. The reason the art is so cheesy right now is to keep the project on schedule. I'd rather mod one file in 1-2 minutes then spend a day on each. If I did that at this point, it would take forever (I've made one exception to this, but that's still secret). I realize that not having screenshots is hampering it's growth, but with 4,141 views, I wouldn't say that it's doing too bad. Patience will win the day through.

EDIT: Bagh! I noticed last night that version 1.0.9 came out a couple of hours after I released 1.5. So, I just made the mod 1.0.9 friendly. 1.5.1 will be on the first post in a minute or two.

When was everyone going to tell me that 1 typo was making it unplayable? Now, I'm going to put my 1.7 plans (not specified here) on hold until I thouroughly review the mod and make sure that there isn't anything else wrong. So far, this has been it, but it's been around since 1.0.1, so I would have expected a comment or two on it by now. I'm planning on polishing my graphics off and making them smoother, then rerelease it as version 1.5.2. Not knowing about this sort of stuff is going to kick back screenshots while I polish it off and release more content that was intended for 1.7 (only what I've done so far). In the long run, it's going to make this mod better, but next time, could you guys at least post if there's any problems?

Just to add;

Can we get Hamburgler, Fry Guys, Burger King, Dairy Queen, etc as Units?

With upgradable unit skills such as "Robble Robble" which gives me +10% versus Hamburger based units such as Mayor Mccheese.

+10% Ketchup, +10 All Beef Patty, +10% Special Sauce.

When getting "Drive Thru Technology" can it be like Automation?

Can I ask the "UN" for a Resolution if I can get "cheese on that". I do not know what it is that would do, but I just want to see if England and Genghis Khan and all that will vote whether I can have "Cheese on that" or not.

Can Great Merchants be "Great Delivery Guys".
Great Spokesman such as Dave Thomas, should also be able to help hurry wonders like "Where is the Beef" that helps propel your religion advertising campaigns.

Fast Food 2.0 will be released real soon. It's 4.66 MB. It's not perfect by far, but I didn't want to delay the release too long. It will be posted on the 1st post as soon as I get clearance. I've learned some stuff that will be used for future versions, like how Firaxis isn't using "true" dds files, and that some stuff will be scaled and others won't. For now, here's some screenshots:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg

This shows that scaling dark religious buttons can be done. However, lighter versions can't. It works on this screen, but doesn't look too neat on the civilopedia screen.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/Civ4ScreenShot0002.jpg

This screenshot happens to be the exception to that.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/Civ4ScreenShot0003.jpg

And this screenshot shows that what I thought that I had done isn't quite at that point yet. I'll have to investigate this some more.

So, at this point, it's a step forward, but isn't as big of a step that I hoped it would be. For the most part, I expected all religious icons to be integrated in. Apparently, it isn't at that point yet, but hopefully a 2.1 will fix this. I REALLY want this problem to be fixed by my next release and is going to be one of my main focuses.

You'll notice that with this new version, that I've added useful tips for civ addicts. I can add 44 more. If anyone has a good one, feel free to post it. Also, after I work out all my problems that I'm having, I was thinking of doing 7 more of the rejects that I haven't done already, and providing it as an alternate choice. However, this is going to need to be a lot more mature before I'll consider it. Right now, I've got these:

Domino's Pizza (or Little Caezer's, haven't decided)
Wendy's
Arby's

So, as you can see, there's more needed for this. Any suggestions?

Yup, at least not on my first picks. I felt like two was one too many already, but because of the big rivalry between McDonald's and Burger King, I let this slide. When the project becomes slightly more mature, I'm considering them in my second draft picks.

BTW, 2.0 is now up. Link to come shortly.

Possibly, but I think that Jack in the Box would be far more likely to make it than that. The world of fast food has a LOT of burger joints. So, I've been trying to get the full spectrum of choices, and by doing a lot of burger joints, it doesn't seem to represent the full spectrum. The only one that I've let slide so far has been Burger King and McDonald's. I allowed two in one set just because of their rivalry and interconnectivity being very long (in fact, Burger King bought their first deep fryer from the McDonald's brothers. That's a long ways back!).

EDIT: Great news!!!!! I think that I have found the source of all my grief and anguish! Believe it or not, I am almost 100% certain that I will have it fixed so that by my next release EVERYTHING WILL BE PERFECT! If you don't believe this, or you think that you read this wrong, please READ IT AGAIN. What I've desperately been looking for is NOT referenced anywhere. Period. I've already changed everything that I've seen referenced, other than movies (I'm considering working on them too). Sometime next week, this might result in a new version, or a screenshot to tease you all at least. If anyone doubts me, check \resource\Civ4\GameFont.tga. You'll then see why I am thinking that this is one of the best discoveries yet.

EDIT: Was a good laugh when I opened it. Doesn't seem to make a difference, although it was quite deceitful. I even tried replacing the main files, but this doesn't seem to be the fix either. Oh well, I guess. Back to hunting that elusive file.

Well, as I've announced before, I'm going to have to put this project on a temporary (if not permanent) hiatus come January 1st. To keep myself from being burned out, I took the last week off. I did nothing else in my free time for the last couple of months and needed a little break so that I could revisit the problems that I've been having and to review all material. Next week, I might pick it up again, but the next version will HAVE to be the last version that I release for a long time. I'm starting classes on the 9th and won't be able to do much more than lurk around every now and then. I'm not even thinking of getting a computer down there until fall semester. So, I thought I'd post this news. My major pet project within the project is to get the overworld religious icons to work. I'm thinking that maybe I'll have to clear the cache each time. When it works, I might submit it, but I won't gurantee it by Christmas. Perhaps New Years (If it doesn't get finished by then, then it just won't get finished. Period).

I think that this would be funnier if it said: "Julius Caesar has discovered the salad" (EVEN though he didn't invent or have the Caesar salad named after him). Also, have you played it? I'm the kind of guy who has more fun playing with the box than the game (in this case, the box is modding), so I haven't logged nearly any time playing (probably about 10 hours since it came out. I've modded for at least 60 or so by now, so guess which I'm more familiar with).

Yeah, I've thought about something like that. Maybe I'll revisit the sounds, but the thing that I've had the hardest time with is trying to find sounds that actually work for me. For instance, I haven't found a "Would you like fries with that" sound that I've liked. The only one that I've found has it barely recognizable with someone throwing up in the background (plus, it's said extremely quickly). About half of the sounds I want to replace, but it's all going to come down to how much time I can actually put into finding them.

Muahaha! I have done it! What I was thinking before didn't work, BUT WHEN I THOUGHT ALONG THOSE LINES, things fell through and I now have all icons working properly. I'm going to put this in a 2.0.1 once I finish polishing it off a bit. It will be small enough (115 KB or so) that I'm not going to reconsider repackaging it. I'll do this so that no one has to suffer anymore from not having things the way they were meant to be seen. Now that all major stumbling blocks are taken care of, I'm considering making 2.1 a two parter, where you can choose whether to download one or both. It WILL HAVE 14 religions, but you'll have to pick and choose which you want. Hopefully, I can get this done by new years.

EDIT: I almost forgot. The second draft picks will be chosen from this list (http://www.qsrmagazine.com/qsr50/2005/charts/systemwide_sales.html). So, make your picks or state why certain companies that rank high shouldn't be included.

I don't know. I was thinking at some point just to split off the pizza joints into their own mod and then having cheezy "Godfather" or mafia like quotes everywhere. However, I might have gotten ahead of myself, and I think that I should focus on a 2.1 release first before considering this other stuff. I'm just too close to New Years and I don't know if I could get all that massive work together. It took me about 3 or 4 days just to go through the material that I prepared for 2.0 to make sure that it worked and that I didn't forget anything.

Another question, I am trying something similar and I was wondering if there was a special trick to get the taoism.dds (and the like) in my mod folder to load instead of the default button graphics?

I know how to do that at the moment, but I'm having some technical issues that I'm resolving at the moment. Currently, anything that I have published so far DOES NOT have this support. Firaxis was sneaky and snuck them into their custom fonts. However, you mess around with some tga files (found in assets\res\fonts. More specifically, they are GameFont.tga and GameFont_75.tga) to get this support. They must retain the EXACT same pallate or it SKIPS OVER the icon that uses custom colors and moves on to the next, messing up every icon within the game (this is where I'm struggling. The old GIMP tool that allowed me to do this seems to be missing, so I'm trying to find ways around this. However, I haven't had a problem with changing GameFont_75.tga's pallate, which is causing a little confusion for me, but I'm going to try to keep both pallates the same just for the heck of it). Also, they need to be uncompressed (which will make it about 500 or more KB just to include these alone). As for what taoism.dds does, I have found out through some extensive testing that it's the illuminated icon for the religious advisor screen and the Civilopedia. The darker version can be resized like a true dds, but you CANNOT resize the regular one due to the fact that the Civilopedia DOES NOT treat them like normal DDS's. Once I release 2.1 (replanned it to be fairly complete and 1.52 compatible. I wasn't expecting a new version to be here this fast, so it's changed my plans drastically) I was thinking about doing an extensive guide somewhere with everything that I've learned so far about how religions are implemented graphics wise with Civ4. I think that there's going to be plenty of people here that will find it VERY useful.

So, on to 2.1. I'm not going to release 2.0.1 because 1.52 came out. It's been taking a while because I'm trying to figure out every little trick that I need to do for the font files. Also, I will be removing some art artifacts that I have previously included and have since found that they're not used at all. This won't reduce the file size by much, and I could possibly double 2.0's size. However, I will also try to do some minor touchups to some art to make it a little more sane (like the small tech icons have a mini religious icon in the bottom right corner, and buildings). However, this might be slightly ambitious due to my limmited time left before real life forces a deadline on me.

Well, it seems as if someone's caught up to me on religious integration (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=148075). Kael probably figured out the complete picture about the same time that I did, I just don't know how in the world he's had all that time to do all that work so far. Right now, I've got most of 2.1's features done, but the tga's are still killing me in GIMP, so I may have to do them in something else. This may be the last thing to be put in before I release it, the way things are going. Oh well, I guess. I'm just hoping to be feature complete by Monday and be able to release 2.1 sometime around the middle of the week. Pre-tests are telling me that it will weigh in around 8.19 MB, but that can go up or down. It's likely to be anywhere between 8-9 MB by the time that I get done with it.

EDIT: From what I've seen, either Civilization uses a newer targa version than the GIMP developers know about, or the GIMP has incomplete support for targa files. It's not a pallate issue with GIMP, but something far more serious. So, targa files for Civ4 HAVE to be done with a utility other than the GIMP at this point in time, which is a real shame. So, this might lead me into a project later, due to the fact that I've never found anything like this that has ever hampered my Civ developement with the GIMP. I'm real tempted to participate in the summer of code, but I might be better suited for this sort of project for me in another year or two. So, despite this, I'm still on schedule, but I can't work as fast with an editor that I completely loathe and find to be less efficient and convenient.

EDIT 2: I've implemented the overland religion icons, but it's still slightly buggy. Another bug that I'm currently fighting deals with implementing religious founding movies. I tried what seemed obvious to me, and since this had worked in several other instances, I thought that I hit a home run with it. Apparently, it doesn't seem possible to use DDS files in place of the NIF's. There may be some further depth to this that I'll need to unravel. I'm thinking that there's a camera like reference that I need to disable. So, I thought that you guys would like to see some screenshots of the current build while I battle these bugs

This screenshot shows that I may have mastered one religious icon type, but not the other. It's very strange, as they're both formatted the same. I'd expect both not to work:

http://photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/th_Civ4ScreenShot0015.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/Civ4ScreenShot0015.jpg)

And here's another that shows that I've made the Religious Advisor screen look much cleaner and a few of the text cleanups so as to make the dialogue much more bearable:

http://photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/th_Civ4ScreenShot0014.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/Civ4ScreenShot0014.jpg)

EDIT 3: Today, there will be multiple edits for edit#3 as I wrap things up. Currently, I have fixed yesterdays religion founding bug, which proved to be extremely simple. I'm going to try to resolve the small religion icon bug that I've been having and polish off the rest of my files for the rest of today.

Now I've fixed the other bug, which was also easy. There's also some screenshots at the bottom of this edit. I'm considering doing them differently on the front post and all further posts, to make these posts much easier to find what you want. If you want to see the full sized image, click on the image.

Tomorrow, I'm considering putting in an extra day to replace quite a few of the sound files, as I still think that there are better ones out there. What this means for you guys is that I probably will be putting in the last finishing touches late Wednesday/Thursday and will possibly get this file released close to New Year's eve. I want everything that I've done so far to work out to perfection. I could release it at this point at 8.55 MB, but want to be able to implement every little feature that I've been experimenting with, as I won't be able to mess around with them later. More to be added to this edit later as progress continues.

This screenshot shows off that I have truely fixed the other gamefont file, for all those unbelievers:
http://photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/th_Civ4ScreenShot0018.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/Civ4ScreenShot0018.jpg)

This screenshot shows off the new religion founding movies. NOTE: this could be changed later to make them look better in the game. It's not final at this point.
http://photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/th_Civ4ScreenShot0017.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/kingtux/Civ4ScreenShot0017.jpg)

EDIT 4: Hmm... just sharing little tidbits on everything that I've done has gotten me 2,000 more views over the last week or two. Very interesting. I wonder how much more that I'll get once I actually release it. Nothing new for now, just signing in for the day. If you watch long enough, there will be some edits to Edit#4 today as I share my progress. I'm hoping that by the end of the day, that I will have everything in order to release it tomorrow. However, I'll have to PM Thunderfall, and it might be Saturday before anyone sees it, so I'll be not so secretly trying to prove the themers wrong out there once things are wrapped up for good by making a mod specific coloring that doesn't have to override the origional files. I am almost 100% positive that I am right on this one, and don't want to see the community go on blindly under this superstition. Besides, I need to maximize whatever time I have to mod and it's been a long time since I've dived into code.

All artwork is now finalized. When I finish redoing many of the sounds, it will be ready for publishing here on CivFanatics. Right now, the size is 8.51 MB, but that's not final, as sounds can dramatically raise or lower this size. However, you can at least expect to see 8 MB or more. It won't be too long now.

Bagh! Just remembered how hard it is to find what sound effects you want on the internet. I'm going to do my best, but I can't guarantee too many sounds will be exactly what I wanted.

I'm just going to release it. I changed two sound effects, but the selections that I'm finding are lousy, so I'm sticking with what I've got. Almost everything else has been changed with this version, so there's no sense in making an update file. So, stay tuned in the upcoming days when I post my final update for a while here on CivFanatics.

There's only one problem to that. I can't work on any projects until at least August, perhaps later. Where it is at this point in time is where it's going to have to stay unless someone else wants to pick this project up. I currently don't have my own computer up at the school that I'm attending, and not much free time either. Also, I've figured out almost everything concerning religions, and i don't think that it's hardcoded at 22, if at all. I've left it at 7 for a while because 7 balances out well, while too many can cause religions to either degrade in importance, or weaken their value.

Currently, my only contributions at the moment are just lurking around here. I can't do much more than that, as I've packed my schedule with 18 credits.
