Every 4-5 turns my screen goes totally flipped out, all I can see is colored horizontal stripes. I would post a screen shot but sadly at that point my pc is somewhat of vegetative state. I think this more than qualifies as an intersting feature.

Have you checked the temp of your video card? It sounds to me like you overclocked your card too much and it is getting pushed to capacity...but then again...it could be a bug with Civ IV.

I love the strategy layer, mostly because it was originally pinoered by daftpanzer, symphony D., and I among a bunch of other people months before production of Civ IV even started.

I found out that when you place your cursor over another civ's Naval transport, it will show you what it is transporting.... but if you place the cursor over the ship's nationality flag, it will show you the stats for the units it is carrying, with bonuses and rank etc... This will help me (at least) cause right now Im still learning all the units strengths and abilities
But this option will show their bonuses based on their rank, so you can prepare for any landfall invasion

edit: This works for all units' flags. Land units and everything except your own units. It doenst seem to work with your own units.

I know it sounds dumb, but... the countries you play... the workers/units actually speak THAT language. ie... when you play Spain, they speak spanish, etc. Si? I mostly play Mongolia, tho... and don't speak it. So I don't know if its true for ALL civs.

When you're 1 turn away from finishing building something, it gets finished before the AI moves. My capital was undefended (I'd foolishly sent the defender off to kill a pillaging barbarian). There was 1 turn left to build a warrior, but the barbarian was right next to my city. However, the warrior was finished in time to defend against the barbarian.
It's also not just the barbarians. I had a similar thing happen against the English.

Supposedly it is (apparently they had to get a few linguists in for things like Aztecs and Incas)

Yep, all languages are real. Latin that the Romans speak was something i was impressed with. "Ita vero" meaning "yes", and the like, it's all pretty cool. Love this and the effort Firaxis must've made to implement it.

When I play the Romans the workers respond to an order that sounds something like, "More blueberries!"

When I first started playing, I didn't understand the difference between allowing you to create specialists and giving you free ones. Buildings like libraries just let you use your population as specialists, but mercantilism, statue of liberty, etc actually give all your cities free specialist dudes.

I love this. After I did the tutorial and realized the little guys were yelling in Latin, I knew my first game would be as the Indians because I was just dying to hear the little guys speak Hindi. aap kaa aadesh kyaa hai! It's awesome.

Barbarians can found cities of their own which you can capture, giving you a new city. (This probably isn't new to most people, but maybe someone will find it "news").

Sea units only. No bonus for land units.

You can insert spies in real barbarian cities and see what they are up too. Also, you can neither spread religion in barbarian cities nor gift them units. Also, barbarians are all globally linked in trade which explains how they can produce axemen or swordsmen in cities without copper or iron.

The langage thing is pretty cool. The French speak an excellent French :)

Another nice thing is that when you have a big stack of units and you attack, the computer automatically selects the one with the best chance of winning. In the manual they say this works for defense, but if you have grouped your units it's true for attack also !

Dye tiles with a plantation come with a well. If that tile is being worked, the well is full of water. If not, the well is empty.

Bananna tiles with a plantation being worked, the banannas fall off the tree and into a basket underneath the tree. I speculate, though have not confirmed, that if it my city was not working that tile that banannas would NOT fall off the tree.

I agree. I was totally looking foward to venturing under the ice. Also, have you ever noticed that the subs don't fire their weapons normally but instead they launch them up into the air like fireworks? It is very odd. Especially the sub vs. sub battles where it makes no sense.

I don't think that's correct. I once played a pangaea game on a tiny world with just one opponent. At some point, I got the world map from him in a trade. The part of the world that he had discovered "met" with the part of the world that I had discovered (there were just three or four tiles of ocean between the eastern and the western shore of the continent) so that I had basically "discovered" a path around the world. I got the message that I was the first to have circumnavigated the world and that I would get a movement bonus. I didn't even have a single ship at that point.

I am still not sure if it's a bug or a feature.

Sorry to hyjack this thread, but have you tried to disable HT? And also, no offense, but why do people buy alienware computers? $4000 for a $1200 computer? Yikes!!

Clown2TheLeft
Nov 09, 2005, 10:13 AM
No I haven't tried to disable it. I have a V-8 in my car, and haven't ripped off half the spark plug wires to make it a four-cylinder, either.

And why I bought an Alienware? Because I was sick of being raped by Dell, Compcrap, and the rest for obsolete hardware that could not be configured in the manner which I desired. Furthermore, I didn't have time to build my own, and I paid $1,200 for the thing, not $4,000.

Any more questions?

Later!

Subs launch missiles? That sounds accurate. The harpoon missile flies in the air over the water, then dives in at the last moment to strike like a torpedo. Makes it harder to counter... Not sure if subs have them, but destroyers do... (or did anyways) Not sure of the newer weapons.
The book says there is a Palace View icon on the mainscreen, but its not on the screen. I was curious if its a hidden icon to something that was scrapped. (sort of like the random size map icon in Civ3)

EDIT- actually I may be vis versa on that... harpoons MAY fire like torpedo then fly into the air and strike... I don't remember exactly.. its been too long ago I was reading about that.

they dont have missles well at least the subs in the game dont. but even if they did it still makes no sense because you cant launch a missle when there is ICE on top of you.

Actually, modern subs DO use missiles to attack with. They launch up, out of the water... cruise missiles or whatever you want (the missiles are smaller than their land based equivalents, ... about the size of the ones launched from B-52s), and Yes, they CAN go through ice... so can the whole surfacing sub. It depends, of course, on the thickness of the ice. And... even if the ice was WAY inland, you can never tell from looking at it from above, how thick the ice really is.

Shoot, ... we have missiles than can penetrate solid stone, into a bunker, before releasing its warhead for detonation.

Yes I know modern subs do have missiles on board I said in THE GAME they don't. and as far as I know subs dont launch missles through ice for a number of reasons because it could detonate, screw up the tragecteray, mess up the electronics on board etc etc so I highly doubt they do that. and yes I know subs surface through ice thats how they launch them they have to surface first you can't shoot a missle through ice unless it's very thin then there would be no reason to attempt to shoot through the ice cause you could just surface for less chance of something going wrong.
