View Full Version : Mature player PBEM game - Newbie friendly :-)
Arnaud.Online Nov 06, 2005, 06:08 PM Hello everyone :-)
I would like to launch a PBEM Civ 4 game, preferably with 6-8 players so that each of us would have one turn a week. I am a complete beginner in Civ, Civ 4 being my first Civ game. I am quite experienced with RTS games (Total Annihilation mostly, an old one :-)). French-speaking players are welcome, even though english proficiency would be nice if not all the players are french or bilingual canadian (i am french). Who is interested ?
Arnaud
Coke_Cola Nov 06, 2005, 08:50 PM I am interested but i can't play anything over standard size. I can speak french and english, however its been a while since i wrote it so im rusty
Gnarfflinger Nov 06, 2005, 09:13 PM Well, I'd be interested in joining you. My French is very limited since I haven't taken any French Classes since 1988...
My preference is the Mongols, leader head Kubli Khan
SITS Nov 06, 2005, 10:11 PM I can't speak french but would love to join a PBEM game. I guess at 37 I would be called mature and I would class myself as a newbie even though I used to play SMAC PBEM alot...
azzaman333 Nov 06, 2005, 10:17 PM I'd like to play. I'd prefer to be Greece.
Shoegazer Nov 06, 2005, 11:42 PM I'd like to join as well as the Persians.
Ricki Nov 07, 2005, 12:59 AM I'd like to be the Spanish.
ranathari Nov 07, 2005, 03:58 AM I would love to play a newbie-friendly game. Preferably Egypt.
Afraid I don't speak French but I do have 150 Canadian relatives so they can translate for me :P
podbevna Nov 07, 2005, 06:44 AM I would also like to join, if it is not full yet. Any civ...
Arnaud.Online Nov 07, 2005, 11:30 AM Hello all !
Ok, so far we have 9 players, that's one more than envisaged, but it's ok :-) I will now create the game as soon as i received from each of you the following infos:
* your nickname in the game
* prefered nation & leader (some of you have already indicated their preferences, so do not make a choice already taken). Random is ok.
Size will be standard. All parameters will be default. Communications outside the game (emails, IM, whatever) are perfectly ok. What is more interesting than exchanging some short emails when we are at work, about alliances, coordinated efforts or sneak attacks for the next turns :-) ?
Please consider that by agreeing to participate, you will do your best to make your turn in 24 hours following the reception of the savegame from the previous players. That should translate in at least one turn every 9 days for each of us, maybe more. Occasional delays for exceptional circumpstances are ok, but regularly introducing lag in the game is not. We are all adults though, and communication in this forum should clean any misunderstanding.
Lastly, i received a proposal from Big J Money to join his game (another thread in this forum), but as we are now 9, that would make a 13+ game which for me as a newbie is a little too much. However, do not hesitate to go and see his thread if you intend to participate in two games at once.
Now, i am waiting for your preferences (name, nation and leader) and shall the fun begin :-)

Arnaud.Online Nov 07, 2005, 11:49 AM We will use password protection, to prevent each other from seeing other's empire. In order to do that, on your very first turn of play, each of you will press Alt + D. A small form will appear, already partially filled with your name and nation, and with 3 empty box. When you mouse-over it, the description will appear. Please fill at least the Password box. Doing it this way, even me will not know any of the password.
You can also fill the SMTP box if you want the game to email automatically your savegame to the next player. In this case, when emailing from the game, the game will ask you the email adress of the next player. It seems to be still buggy though, and manual emailing is more stable (i tried it with my provider, Sympatico in Canada, with no luck yet).

Coke_Cola Nov 07, 2005, 05:00 PM I'll be Arabia, and my name will be Rocky. Don't you need my email also for a PBEM?
Arnaud.Online Nov 07, 2005, 08:13 PM Yes, emails are needed so that each of us know who to send the turn to ! Sorry if i was not clear about that. So please everyone, indicates the email you which to receive your savegame in !
Arnaud
Arnaud.Online Nov 07, 2005, 10:22 PM So far, i have 3 emails out of the 9 needed (mine, Gnarfflinger and SITS). To the remaning 6, please send me yours :-)
Arnaud
Ricki Nov 08, 2005, 12:16 AM Mine is ricardo.ruedas@gmail.com
ranathari Nov 08, 2005, 01:34 AM ranathari [a] hotmail . com
Egypt and Hatty for moi.
Arnaud.Online Nov 08, 2005, 10:59 AM A small update: thanks to the 6 players who sent me their infos. I have sent emails to each of the 3 remaining ones, to remind them that we still wait for their email to launch the game.

Coke_Cola Nov 08, 2005, 01:21 PM Mine is FoeHammer343 @ Gmail . com
Arnaud.Online Nov 08, 2005, 10:10 PM Hi everyone,
The game is started :-) The order of the players is the order of arrival of the posts in this thread. So it is:
1) MarsAttack (me)
2) Rocky (Coke Cola)
3) Gnarfflinger the Butcher
4) SITS
5) Azzaman
6) Shoegazer
7) Ricki
8) Ranathari
9) Podbevna
I have entered in the game configuration the email adresses of everyone (Shoegazer, i entered the one you used to email me). I suggest that everyone, as the start of their first turn, set a password for their game by using ALT+D and mouseover over the window that will appear. But anyway, I trust everyone to keep this game fun and cheat-free. I will make my turn tonight and send it to Rocky. So welcome everyone, and now let's have fun :-)
Arnaud
PS: some of you took precautions not to display their emails here for obvious reasons (bot farming and the like), so i will not display them either, but they are all entered in the game so that each of us can know who to send the turn to.
Arnaud.Online Nov 08, 2005, 10:29 PM The game is now in Rocky's hand.
Arnaud
PS: oh well, i forgot to put a password for my nation :-D Will do it for my next turn.
Coke_Cola Nov 09, 2005, 04:51 PM How do i unpause the game? Its says that you paused the game and i can't continue.
Arnaud.Online Nov 09, 2005, 05:22 PM How do i unpause the game? Its says that you paused the game and i can't continue.
What the ... I did not pause the game, at least i don t think so. But I tried to send it to you via in-game email, and then manually because the first did not succeed. Let me check this, i will send it again to you tonight. For everyone, be careful with the in-game email option ...
Arnaud
Coke_Cola Nov 09, 2005, 05:25 PM What do you mean by tonight? Im in EST and when you sent me the save it was around midnight for me.
Arnaud.Online Nov 09, 2005, 07:03 PM Ok, i have re-created the game from scratch, played my turn, and sent it to Rocky. I know now what happened: the game autosaves from time to time, and i sent the autosave to Rocky, and NOT the save done at the end of my turn. It is actually easy to distinguish the two: the one you have to send is prefixed with "to_NextPlayerName" while the autosave is not.

Coke_Cola Nov 09, 2005, 07:35 PM Sent save to gnarfflinger. Works now.
OverloadUT Nov 09, 2005, 07:36 PM There is a major problem with PBEM: If you try to use the feature that automatically sends the email and it fails, there is no way to save the game in such a way that you can send it to the next player manually. I have not figured out a workaround for this and I spent a fair amount of time playing with it. The only way to continue is to replay your turn again and click the "Don't Send" (is that what the button is?) button, which will cause a proper save file to be saved.
Please correct me if I am wrong. I would love to be wrong.

I think you re right, because after a failed save, the game enter Pause Mode, and nothing can make it exit it. So please everyone, use the manual save and send, unless you previously tried on a dummy PBEM game and you are SURE it is working with your SMTP !

Shoegazer Nov 11, 2005, 01:42 PM Is this game still alive? Does anyone know whose turn it is?
Coke_Cola Nov 11, 2005, 02:32 PM it should be gnarfflinger's or they guy after him's turn.

I think that it saves the game, then it tries to send it. so you should be fine even if it doesnt work, just send the save that happened before the auto-send attempt.
Gnarfflinger Nov 11, 2005, 09:45 PM I noticed that there is a subdirectory off the PBEM games save directory. I believe it is labeled Auto. If you need to send manually, then you can find the outgoing file there. I've sent the file on to SITS. the delay was the fact that I didn't have his E-mail address.
What became standard in Civ III PBEM game was having the host send out a "planning e-mail" to all players including their prefered e-mail address, what country they had (if that information was available and open to be shared, that is).
SITS Nov 11, 2005, 11:25 PM I've sent the turn on but I had to search for azzaman333's email address in the forum. We could do with a master email with people's details (as Gnarfflinger suggests...)
Anyways - good luck everyone!
Arnaud.Online Nov 11, 2005, 11:29 PM I have entered the emails of everyone in the game configuration, so they should be available as soon as you end your turn, in the window that appears when you try to send it from within the game. I don't think this would cause a problem (to open this window to read the next player email, and then to send it manually anyway) as long as you send the correct save (the one appended with to_NextPlayerName). But correct me if i am wrong, this is my first PBEM.

Arnaud.Online Nov 16, 2005, 11:59 AM We have been waiting for some days now without information from you, have you received the turn Azzaman ? Sent it already ? Who has the save ?
Arnaud
SITS Nov 16, 2005, 03:46 PM If you PM me his address then I will resend it...
Arnaud.Online Nov 16, 2005, 11:58 PM I have sent individually via PM the emails addresses of the next player to all of you that needed it (ie, for the emails not already posted on the forum for everyone to see). This way 1) i saved time and 2) emails sent privately to me have only been sent to the only player needed it.

Shoegazer Nov 17, 2005, 07:50 AM I got am e-mail from Azzaman this morning, but unfortunately the file was the save from the first round. I sent him an email to let him know, so hopefully I can get the right save file soon.
azzaman333 Nov 17, 2005, 04:03 PM everyone is having their first turns arent they?
Shoegazer Nov 18, 2005, 02:53 AM I took my first turn last week, so I was expecting this to be turn 2. If I'm mistaken, let me know and I'll do my first turn again and send it on.

i never posted here, which is probably the cause of the confusion. So its the first turn still.

ShoeGazer, I think you are mistaken, this will be your first turn in this game. May be you are confused with another PBEM game you are in ?

Ricki Dec 01, 2005, 09:46 AM Hi all,
Arnaud, I read your mail but I will answer here so that everybody knows. I got Shoegazer's turn when I was sleeping and played my turn when I woke up and checked my mail. So it took 9 hours since I got the game until I sent it to the next person, ranathari. I haven't been checking the forums lately so I didn't know there was a problem with the game. I'm going to send the game again to ranathari right now.
Ricki Dec 01, 2005, 09:53 AM Well, as I said in my previous post, I haven't checked the forums for long, so long that I hadn't read post #42 where I was told that I have to send the game to somebody else. :/ Sorry everybody for the problem but there wouldn't have been any problem if I had been notified by e-mail of this change. Again, sorry.
Gnarfflinger Dec 01, 2005, 10:46 PM I'll be out of town until Sunday, so I may not get the file sent until Monday should it arrive in my inbox...
Luk Dec 05, 2005, 03:59 PM Problem is that I do not know email of Podbevna:( I can not send game....
