View Full Version : The Great People Mod
Snoopy Nov 08, 2005, 02:06 AM What this Mod does:
--------------------------
Whenever a great person, such as a great artist or prophet is born in any of YOUR cities, a window will popup, showing you a picture and a quote from the great person.
The windows are also colour coded for each type of great person.
Yellow/Gold = Merchant
Green = Scientist
Blue = Prophet
Red = Engineer
Purple = Artist
Install Instructions:
-------------------------
Unzip the contents into Program Files\Firaxis Games\Civilization IV\MODS
Running the Mod
---------------------
1. Start Civilization IV
2. From the menu, go to advanced, then click on Load a Mod
3. Load Great People Mod
4. Civilization IV will restart
5. Start a game as usual
Note that everytime you want to play your game, Civilization IV will have to restart and load the mod.
The file size of this Mod is roughly 10mb.
This is a temporary server until the admins put it on their server (Thunderfall, help me out here?!)
This is my server! so go easy!

Last notes
--------------
There are bound to be mistakes with this mod, so if:
The picture is wrong
The colour background is wrong
The type of great person is wrong (Einstein is born, but it says Great Merchant at the bottom)
The quote is wrong
You get a pink rectangle
Let me know the name of the person that was born so that I can fix it.
----------------------------------------
Thanks to vovan for the scripts.
Rufus T. Firefly Nov 08, 2005, 03:07 AM I had noted that in standard civIV the great person namee are only in english, also if the xml file contains the translations (eg: Nicolaus Copernicus should be Nicolò Copernico in italian).
Can you fix it?
Snoopy Nov 08, 2005, 03:13 AM That's up to the programmer, I don't know how to fix it, sorry.
woodelf Nov 08, 2005, 04:22 AM This will be cool to get implemented into other Mods. Nice.
Graun Nov 08, 2005, 08:11 AM Great:)
thank you!
vorius Nov 08, 2005, 08:37 AM Can you post a screen shot of a good example of how this looks like? :)
Snoopy Nov 08, 2005, 09:06 AM Can't get a screenshot, for some reason the mod is not working for me, can anyone else test it and let me know if it works?
Loppan Torkel Nov 08, 2005, 10:33 AM Are the Great People civspecific?
jaynus Nov 08, 2005, 12:26 PM Hey Snoopy! I love how this has a little immersion...do you mind if I integrate it with my mod, just to make things a little more detailed?
Haarbal Nov 08, 2005, 02:32 PM i really like this mod, even though it's just a litle detail
i also found some great persons that didn't work
St. Peter, Chaung-Tzu, and St. Augustine had a complete empty window
Euclid had a too large picture, so you couldn't see the quote
Kobo-Daishi had no window at all
Snoopy Nov 08, 2005, 06:10 PM Well, glad its working for people,
I managed to get it working for myself too, I had put the files two directories deep inside the mod file, where as the files should only be 1 directory deep.
I also put the files in My Games\Civilization IV\Mods\
just in case
Thanks Haarbal for the heads up.
Jaynus, you may use this mod however you wish.
Loppan, great people are not civ specific
Jecrell Nov 08, 2005, 06:15 PM I noticed you and I ran into the same problem Snoopy. These modules are starting to get pretty big.
This is a really good idea though. More quotes from history. :)
Kinjiru Nov 08, 2005, 09:16 PM Heya,
Great mod, really adds something that feels special.
When I start a new game up, everything works fine (Load A Mod, get told the application must restart, it does and the revised splash screen appears, start a new game, no issues).
However, I cannot load a save game. If I try to load a game, the app does not realize that the Mod has already been loaded in. So it tries to restart again but will not load the mod.
I also tried a fresh start-up (normal Civ), did the Load a Mod, then tried to load the save game. Still get the same issue.
To rule out the possibility of a corrupted save file, I started all over (multiple times) and still get the same issue when attempting to load a saved game.
So, am I just missing something incredibly obvious here?
QiZhe Nov 08, 2005, 09:27 PM Question. When you play sufficiently long and enough of the same type of Great People have been born, they run out of names and they just use the generic name (Instead of "Moses" or "St. Peter" you just end up with "Great Prophet"), how does this mod work with that?
Kinjiru Nov 08, 2005, 09:43 PM Heya,
However, I cannot load a save game. If I try to load a game, the app does not realize that the Mod has already been loaded in. So it tries to restart again but will not load the mod.
Fixed my own problem, kind of.
The should really be installed in the main cIV directory, not into the My Games\cIV directory.
ie.
Correct:
C:\Games\Sid Meier's Civilization IV\Mods\
Incorrect:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization IV\ MODS\
The 'incorrect' path does seem to work for SOME people with SOME mods. The 'correct' path seems to always work (after flushing the cache, of course - C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\cache ).
Now, in the top I said that this kinda fixes the problem. It does, but only for freshly saved games. I can now start a game with the mod, save that game, and later load that game.
Games started before I moved the files into the correct path will still not load. Guess there is something written into one of the files that looks for the old path.
Anyway, GREAT MOD. I absolutely love it!
Snoopy Nov 08, 2005, 09:48 PM Question. When you play sufficiently long and enough of the same type of Great People have been born, they run out of names and they just use the generic name (Instead of "Moses" or "St. Peter" you just end up with "Great Prophet"), how does this mod work with that?
oh I didn't know that
well, everyone is allowed to alter the script as they wish
Jay I.R.i.R. Nov 10, 2005, 03:14 AM great idea!
I would like to do a german version of this (or maybe an international one using the mother tongue?).
Is that ok with you?
Could you tell me which fonts you used?
Thank you!
Haarbal Nov 10, 2005, 05:12 AM i've found some more incorrect great people
Aristole, Aryabhata Cai Lun, Gallileo Gallilei, Archimedus, John Dalton and Louis Pasteur have a oversized picture which fills the whole window
Hanno, Al-Khwarizmi and Mohammed Shah have a empty (pink) window
Corey Nov 10, 2005, 02:48 PM Just what we needed,gj and tnx.Altough it's big :D
Lightzy Nov 13, 2005, 07:25 PM Absolutely beautiful idea.
I love it that someone tries to put more colour and atmosphere into the game rather than try to turn the whole thing upside down :)
It's good that there are people like this :)
If it were me I'd probably do all kinds of crap and ruin the game.
(Sorry, spam, but what I'd do would probably be to add a few more unique great people, and then make great people a 'finite' resource. that is, after you use up all the great people, there won't be any more generic ones)
Gargoyle Nov 17, 2005, 09:22 AM It doesn't work for me.

Running the Mod

3. Load Great People Mod

5. Start a game as usual
Civ shows I'm running the mod. But I don't get anything different when a Great person is born in my cities.
Sir_CharlesIII Nov 17, 2005, 03:55 PM You know what I don't like about Great People? The Great Person you get should be based on people from your actual civilization not just random Great People from history. If I'm playing as the Chinese I shouldn't get Homer as a Great Person.

1c0n Nov 19, 2005, 04:18 PM cant wait to try this, tho i think i'll wait until its incorperated into the realism mod, amazing idea! GJ!!!! i just always run with realism. very good addition to ANY mod!
Caltone Nov 20, 2005, 09:54 AM It's doesn't works for me either!:(
Me either
It restarts and shows the mod name on the splash screen, but no popups when a GP is born.

Nor should you be building the Statue of Liberty or founding Judaism.
Saint_Saturn Nov 20, 2005, 08:06 PM Same problem is happening for me. Unzipped into correct folders, and 'great persons mod' shows up under the 'load a mod' section, but nothing changes in-game..
Dr. Zoidberg Nov 21, 2005, 05:14 PM In response to the people who cant get it to work, ive had a similar problem. If you just go into the Great People Mod folder, there should be a folder called GreatPersonMod. If you copy that folder into your mod folder as a seperate mod it should work. Just remeber to load GreatPersonMod when you try to play with it.

Yes you can, but just make sure it works, so you dont have to dowload it again.
Caltone Dec 03, 2005, 07:34 PM Just wanted to send some thanks to Snoopy for this mod. Very enjoyable and I run it in all my games. :goodjob:
hIdDeN_eViL Dec 04, 2005, 08:52 PM has there been any developements here? (fixing up the probs mentioned?)
Gargoyle Dec 05, 2005, 01:03 PM has there been any developements here? (fixing up the probs mentioned?)
Yes, the Great People Folder contains the GREATPERSONMOD folder. I took the latter and put it as a main folder directly in MODS. Then I deleted the former. IT WORKS!
I have noticed that there a few Purple screens for missing graphics of great people. Not many but enough. Sorry I didn't bother at the time to make a list.
ostar Dec 07, 2005, 12:26 AM If you check the Art folder for this mod, there is a subfolder there with all the dds files. Some of them (mostly saints) don't have a dds extension. Rename those by just adding .dds to the end of the file name and they should now work.
JamieCiv4Files Dec 07, 2005, 05:53 AM I've mirrored this mod at http://civilization4.filefront.com/ for you snoopy :)
ranathari Dec 07, 2005, 01:12 PM Screenshot, please?
ostar Dec 09, 2005, 11:35 PM This is a great mod. There are some blank popups however, and I have found fixes for most of them. Basically, the name of the mods .dds file is different from the game title of the leader. To fix this, go into the Great Person/People mod folder, Art subfolder, Great People (?) subfolder. Rename the following files below. You don't have to open them - just right click and choose rename. Keep the same upper/lower case.
Make sure your system allows you to see file extensions! If not, go into the folder options in the Control panel and click it on.
Wrong is what they are - Right what they should be.
(Arrgghh - why is the program insisting on crushing them together? I put spaces between the wrong and right names. Sorry.)
Wrong Right
Al Khwarizmi.dds Al-Khwarizmi.dds
Al Kindi.dds Al-Kindi.dds
Al Razi.dds Al-Razi.dds
Chang Tzu.dds Chang-Tzu.dds
John D Rockefeller.dds John D. Rockefeller.dds
St. Augustine St. Augustine.dds
St. Patrick St. Patrick.dds
St. Paul St. Paul.dds
St. Peter St. Peter.dds
st_john St. John.dds
St. Thomas Aquinas St. Thomas Aquinas.dds
Zheng Hi.dds Zheng He.dds
These three Great People don't have a file at all, I believe: Ling Lun, Nabu-rimanni, Hanno.
Also, I was unable to open/view the following files, receiving a bad format error. There may be something wrong with the file so it doesn't work. Or it could be my viewer program (IrfanView).
Frank Kafka
John Maynard Keynes
John Stuart Mill
Ludwig von Beethoven

I've emailed him and no response. I will try and upload a "patch" fixing those errors above. I've even thought of creating a Great Generals mod extension to this, so you can use both. I'm having a problem converting to .dds from .bmp, though.
BaalRoG Dec 12, 2005, 11:44 PM did you try nvidia tools? the dds converter for photoshop or paint shop pro`?
ostar Dec 13, 2005, 12:00 AM did you try nvidia tools? the dds converter for photoshop or paint shop pro`?
No, I didn't. I was trying the dds converter listed elsewhere on these forums. Thanks for the tip - I will try nvidia tools. I hope it works with Photoshop 5!
Patricius Dec 15, 2005, 05:37 PM Hey Ostar,
I noticed you were going to try to clean up the mod, since Snoopy isn't available now. I kind of started changing the graphics part and I am about a third of the way through every GP. Here is an example of what my update looks like. If everyone approves, I will post the updated mod, once I finish.
patricius
P.S. I didn't touch the python files:confused: , just the art.

MourinhoPortuga Dec 15, 2005, 07:01 PM Guys Snoopy hasnt posted in over a month, i think u should carry on with the changes and upgrades of his mod, but always recognizing his initial work, i just think the greater good (in this case the most possible fun for the whole community) is more important.
Keep up the good work, and good luck! :goodjob:

Wow, that's great! I can't modify the Art, since I have photoshop LE. :(
I tried using a BMP/DDS converter, but since the existing DDS files in this mod are sized 400x600 the BMP won't convert to DDS (not a power of 2).
I have a number of quotes and pictures I was ready to use. I also wanted to make an extension to this for the Great Generals mod. Any chance that I could send you what I have and you could do the Art?

SimCutie Dec 16, 2005, 03:02 AM Hmmm, I checked all DDS file of snoopy's original Great People mod
and wrote a batch file to correct file names.
Cut and paste following code to text file and save that as "RENAME-DDS.BAT".
Or, just download the attached text file and rename it to batch file.
And put it in ".../CustomAssert/art/GreatPeople" folder.
(or any folder where you installed GreatPeople *.dds files)
Run the batch file will rename incorrect DDS filename to correct one.

I have written a small improved Great People mod with localized Great People names and custom option that you can turn on/off GP popup screen at your choice. Is any one interested in it? Then I will release it.
EDITED:

I suggest you to think it again. Dealing with 400*600 and 512*512 picture box on same program code is bit harder and cubersome. And I think that 400*600 is nicer form factor on screen for in-game pop up than squre sized 512*512.
Just send me completed 400*600 high quality PNG or PSD file to me. I will convert it to DDS file with my photoshop and send back to you. Just upload it to free file hostig service, and notify me.
Then, I will modify this mod to handle both pictures ( snoopy's and paticius's) and user can choose picture set to display in custom option screen.
This is how it would look like.. in future...

oh, if I had known that I would have done it in 400x600.
However, since I am already finished with about 80 of the the completed pictures, out of 178 I don't know if I can keep sane while going back and changing every single one. I poked around in the Python files and changed it to be consistent with 512x512. So, it all depends if everyone really likes the look of 400x600 over 512x512
Edit: Could this look like this because the file is too big?
Another Edit: sorry for wasting all your thinking time, I figured out why it looks like this.

Oh, and can I add this mod in a way that it will be loaded with the standard game (so that I don't have to load it as a separate mod)?
Walter Hawkwood Dec 17, 2005, 02:02 PM Some observations of erroneous pics in the original mod:
Al Razi is swapped with Abu Bakr
Andrei Sakharov uses Andrew Carnegie pic
Archimedes looks strange for an ancient Greek
Mimar Sinan.dds and Sinan.dds are identical - redundant?
St. Thomas and St. John are identical
Patricius Dec 17, 2005, 03:32 PM Hi guys,
Heres a little update on what I finished so far.
Al Razi is swapped with Abu Bakr
Andrei Sakharov uses Andrew Carnegie pic
Archimedes looks strange for an ancient Greek
Mimar Sinan.dds and Sinan.dds are identical - redundant?
St. Thomas and St. John are identical
For Al Razi... the mix up was caused becuase Al-Razi's full name is Abu Bakr Mohammad Ibn Zakariya al-Razi. I have fixed this problem.
Fixed Andrei Sakharov
Archimedes's picture is just a Reneissance painter's idea of what he looked like.
Mimar Sinan is redundant and is not needed, only Sinan; I have fixed this.
Up to this point I have fixed the first 99 GP. It should take me a couple days more to finish the rest.

I agree that 400X600 may look better. But Firaxis made Civ4 so we could modify it. Restricting this mod to 400X600 means only a select few with an expensive program (like photoshop) can modify it. Using 512x512 means nearly everyone can make changes to this mod, since there are free BMP-DDS converters.
People could then modify this to their own scenarios with their own Great People, like a fantasy mod, or a specific historical period, or even add/remove their favorite/offensive Great Person.
Simply put, making this 512x512 means it can be modified by all. I think that vastly outweighs any minor graphical differences, and I hope your mod will take that into account and use 512 also.

I have. To my understanding, there is a dds viewer, but not a dds modifier for gimp - at least I never found one. Please enlighten me if there is.
And my point still stands - gimp is not a well known program. Everyone has Paint, and there is a bmp-dds converter program listed here in the civ forums. Making this mod 512x512 means it has the widest availability and ease of use.

Patricius Dec 26, 2005, 11:59 AM Hey Guys,
I made some progress on the Mod but then I was struck down by a pretty bad bout of the flu. :nuke: I am not going to be able to work on the mod for a couple of days, but If anyone is willing to, I can give you the Pictures I used to construct each one and you can carry on until I am better. If anyone is interested, just say and I will post the Templates. For the font type I have used Book Antiqua, so make sure your photo editor has that font.

LordGek Dec 29, 2005, 08:03 PM Hey Gang,
I'm really just interested in Snoop's color coding w/o any additional popup fun. Does this mod show foreign GPs with the same color coding? I just like the idea of knowing instantly what kind of GP just came into being. I'm currently using another GP mod that pulls the clever, "St. John (Prophet)" but it looks a bit weird when you click on the GP and get, "St. John (Prophet) (Great Prophet)".
Leong9000 Dec 31, 2005, 07:10 PM i like this feature, can you guys suggest it to the firaxis?
Banira Dec 31, 2005, 07:58 PM i was browsing through the dds files for this mod and saw that quite a few GP portraits are raw pictures without the color border and description
Zibby Jan 01, 2006, 09:55 AM I tried the link, and also tried going to http://www.thecrazypixel.com/ , but it doesnt seem to work. Any idea on when it will be up again?
Great work by the way, this seems like a great addition to the game
Patricius Jan 05, 2006, 04:05 PM Hey Guys,
I am still working on fixing a few problems with the mod and changing the graphics. At the moment, my new graphics don't contain a color coding scheme, but if you guys are really attached to that, I can probably implement that somehow. 36 more GP to go...out of 179.
Some things that I can't figure out:
I cannot find quotes by: Mimar Sinan, Raphael, Raja Todar Mal, Nikolaus August Otto, Merit Ptah, Johannes Vermeer, or Norbert Rillieux. I can also use a quote about the person by a contemporary. If you guys know of any or can find some I'd appreciate it. Also, I believe Firaxis might have made a mistake and included someone named Narek as a Great Prophet, but I believe they meant Guru Nanek who started the Sikh religion. Narek is not even an alternate spelling however, but to change the actual name in the game I would have to change the XML file that contains GP's names, thus including a whole big file just to change one letter. Suggestions?
Anyway, you will all be able to make your suggestions alot better once I release this...but here is a screenshot to give you the idea.
P.S. I don't have a really good screen shot capture program or something, but it doesn't look this fuzzy in the game.

kommie Jan 09, 2006, 06:48 AM I'm also interested if this mod has progressed at all recently. Patricius?
Been using it in its current mostly-working state, and love it. Its little mods like this that really add flavour to conquest games such as Civ4 and give you nice visual rewards for your conquestin' troubles.
New screens by Patricius look awesome. Please keep up the good work!
tableist Jan 09, 2006, 08:39 PM I cannot find quotes by: Mimar Sinan, Raphael, Raja Todar Mal, Nikolaus August Otto, Merit Ptah, Johannes Vermeer, or Norbert Rillieux. I can also use a quote about the person by a contemporary. If you guys know of any or can find some I'd appreciate it. Also, I believe Firaxis might have made a mistake and included someone named Narek as a Great Prophet, but I believe they meant Guru Nanek who started the Sikh religion. Hey, love this mod idea. My first time posting, though I've been playing and modding Civs for a while now.
Anyhow, to the topic at hand. I"m including what quotes I could find on those, and also I humbly offer my assistance with graphics. I'm a web developer/print designer by trade, so I have all the fun software. Adobe Creative Suite CS2, Macromedia et al, etc. Bryce too. If you need any editing of graphics done I'm happy to help if I can.
These are pretty much quotes about them, or in some cases, merely relating to them.
Raphael -
"Raphael paints wisdom" - Ralph Waldo Emerson
(full text - "Raphael paints wisdom, Handel sings it, Phidias carves it, Shakespeare writes it, Wren builds it, Columbus sails it, Luther preaches it, Washington arms it, Watt mechanizes it."
"No record of her high descent
There needs, nor memory of her name;
Enough that Raphael’s colors blent
To give her features deathless fame." - William Allen Butler, Incognita of Raphael
Raja Todar Mal -
Couldn't find any 'real' quotes, but here's an interesting tidbit about Mal:
"Raja Todar mal, one of the "jewels" in Akbar's court, constructed a new temple on the site of the destroyed Vishwanath temple in 1585."
Interesting correlation with game religions no?
Merit Ptah - "Her image is painted in an Egyptian tomb in the Valley of the Kings. She is believed to be the world's first named physician and the first woman known by name in the history of science. She was described by her son, a high priest, as 'the chief physician'."
Considering that her entire legacy was passed on via a tomb wall, this one will be harder. I suggest making something up out of whole cloth (like from the point of view of her son or a pharaoh), or finding a way to transcribe some symbols or glyphs from that excavation. Or just put an old egyptian proverb in there:
"Pride and dignity would belong to women if only men would leave them alone. " or "The wise man is great through his own merits". [Ptah-Hotep]
or "The best and shortest road towards knowledge of truth is Nature" or "Exuberance is a good stimulus towards action, but the inner light grows in silence and concentration" or "Your body is the temple of knowledge"
Johannes Vermeer
Little is known about Vermeer, his paintings not having received wide accolades until after his death. However, there is a book called "Girl with a Pearl Earring", which is historic fiction about Vermeer. The book was eventually made into a movie, and the Vermeer character did have the following memorable exchange:
"Catharina: Why don't you paint me?
Vermeer: Because you don't understand"
Takes some pondering.
Nikolaus August Otto- couldn't find squat, but here's a photo of him if you need: clicky (http://www.scienceandsociety.co.uk/results.asp?image=10302549&wwwflag=2&imagepos=8)
Norbert Rillieux - No joy on quotes by or about, but here's a good page on him: clicky (http://www.aaregistry.com/african_american_history/530/Engineer_and_inventor_Norbert_Rillieux)
Mimar Sinan - Seems like we should be able to find something. Widely renowned. I'll keep looking.
alerum68 Jan 09, 2006, 09:26 PM Raphael - "Time is a vindictive bandit to steal the beauty of our former selves. We are left with sagging, rippled flesh and burning gums with empty sockets." (The Emmerson Quote is good, but several hundred years removed from Raphael)
Mimar Sinan you may need to look on arabic sites for a decent quote by him, but I doubt you'll find one. He was a builder of Mosques, so I doubt anything of his writtings would be usable here, or outside of an architect school.
Patricius Jan 10, 2006, 04:46 PM Hey Guys,
I am very close to finishing and I will post it in the next few days. I have to go back and redo a few that I messed up on and that is the thing hanging up the process at the moment.I have never done a mod before, so I was wondering if anyone could spell out to me how to post a file bigger than the 500 KB limit. I am alos planning on opening a new thread so that it will be easier to see, since Snoopy is not here to put it at the top of the thread.

Thats a great quote for Raphael, thanks I will use it. About Mimar Sinan, If you find some quote that even summurizes his philosophy on architercture that would be good. Not all the quotes i have used have been inspiring or wisdom filled.

Thats great, I am a complete amateur at this, so you could probably polish this up to professional standards pretty easily. I will release when I have finished and I am hoping that we can get a lot of suggestions that could make this Great People mod truly Great.

Thanks for all the input. Although, the Ptah-Hotep quote is not about Merit Ptah, I think its still cool becuase of the reference to merit. I will use that;) Also the Vemeer quote from The girl with the Pearl Earing is the best I think we are going to get so I will use that.
THanks for all your help.
I was just thinking the other day of a way we could improve on this idea...however, don't worry Im not going to try to implement it until after the first realease. I was just thinking that maybe when a Great Artist creates a Great Work for the Culture bomb, we could show that work of art. For Example, when Beethoven culture bombs, his Ninth Symphony starts to play for a few seconds, or when Raphael shows up and does the bomb, we see [I]The Triumph of Galatea[I]
Anyway, what do you guys think? I couldn't think of how we could expand the other Great People but it would add alot to the understanding of the person if we actually saw the work of art he is famous for when he creates that work in the game.
Sincerely,
Patricius
Edit: People we still have no quote for...Raja Todar Mal, Norbert Rillieux, Nikolaus August Otto and now Nabu-rimanni. Some of these people go back pretty far in history and are not part of the Western Tradition so I am not familiar with them. Also, does anyone know who Mohammed Shah is? He is called a Great Prophet in the GP list and is listed in history sometime between Thomas Aquinas and Joan of Arc.
alerum68 Jan 10, 2006, 05:15 PM Mimar Sinan - "I will build the Three Domes for the Faithful to Worship Under." - Is not a real quote, and probably something a X-ian wouldn't say, but is what he did. I couldn't find anything about him. He was a Christian who was drafted by the Ottomans and served them in many campains. As an architect he built many buildings. Most of his mosque used the same principle as the Hagia Sofia. His mosques, which are three-domed structures that allows alot of space, are probably some of the most widely know Masjid in the world.
