View Full Version : Destiny of Glory- Persia

From his youth, all who saw Cyrus knew that he was an extroardinary boy. He was very clever, and his strength as a child could rival a grown man's.

Cyrus grew up as a hunter and warrior, and was famed for his resilience to injury. Grievous wounds would heal overnight. And when he reached his peak of physical and mental strength, he ceased to age. For over a century he was in his tribe's council, and eventually he became accepted as the greatest ruler that his tribe, the Persians, could ever have.

So Cyrus summoned together all of the Persian tribes in his land, in hopes of uniting them into a nation. His fame and reputation had spread far, and dozens of small tribes pledged allegiance to him and the Persians.

Once the formalities were completed, Cyrus set about to the creation of a city to defend the Persian people. So on the southern shore of the Sea of Carabolis, the city of Persepolis was founded. Cyrus now set out to build a mighty nation, to stand the test of time and carry the Persian people to their destiny of glory...

Noble. And as I said, I take what I get. If it's a crappy start, it's more of a heroic act if I win. Besides, who wants to hear about the story of some pampered lucky people who start in a river valley with rich vinyards and bonus grassland? Nice in a game, bad for a story.

Shouldnt have much of a problem with this start on noble, but who knows. Its always nice to get some kind of bonus so you can pump out those settlers. My first game on monarch i had a bad starting spot and i ended up like 2nd in last to scoring most of the game. I also had an outdated military and i got ran over by my opponents when it came to war. In my 2nd monarch game i had 4 bonuses where i started and now i am now starting to win the game in score and land area. I always take what i can get to. But if im surrounded by desert i may start over. Has happened yet. Unlike most people i like to lose in this game. I like it when the AI can just run me over with their military. More of a challenge and more fun.

Nyskis stared over the peak of the hill. He and his fellow explorers had been gone from Persepolis for years, but this trip had been worth it.

The discovery of these rich western lands would be most pleasing to Emperor Cyrus.

"Nyskis!" shouted one of the scouts, "Come here quickly!"

Nyskis deftly leapt from rock to rock, until he had reached the location of his caller.

"What-" he started, "Oh crap."

Down in the valley on the far side of the hill was a huge pride of lions.

"We must turn back!"

"No we won't." replied Nyskis, "We're under orders to move as far west as possible, and by the gods we will!"

"But the lions-"

"Forget the lions, we can go around them. Just wait until darkness can hide us, then we'll slip past them. They may see well, at night, but no one is as well trained in the art of stealth as we."

"I hope you're right Nyskis."

"I am."

As night's cloak reached its darkest point, the fires were extinguished and the explorers set out. They skirted around the sleeping beasts, watching every step, lest they create a noise to wake up the fearsome predators. No one bared to speak as they crept along. Nyskis looked to the left at a sleeping lion, quelling his fear that at any moment, everything could go wrong.

For hours, his group slid through the pride until after what felt like an eternity, the last man had passed beyond the lions. The sun was already burning red in the behind them.

"I told you we'd make it." said a grinning Nyskis, once they were out of hearing range of the lions.

A roar echoed from behind them. The lions were waking.

"I don't think we'll be so lucky next time though." replied his companion.

Nyskis leapt over the last rock rising out of the swirling Trebadin river.

"Halt!" he shouted back to those behind him, "Something approaches!"

The scouts huddled down on the stony riverside. There was definitely something moving through the trees. Was it some ferocious jungle animal?

Out of the thick jungle strode a group of tall men, clad much like Nyskis and his Persian company. Both groups froze. The other man said something. It was unintelligible to Persian ears. Nyskis replied "Hello." This brought on a similar reaction to the other man's foreign greeting.

Thinking quickly, Nyskis tried again to introduce himself. Pointing at himself, he slowly said, "Nyskis". Pointing back at his crew, he said, "Persians."

It seemed that the other man understood.

"Paraltos." he said, pointing at himself, "Greek." he said of his followers.

For several weeks, the two parties remained together in the thick jungle, quickly getting a grasp of each other's languages.

"So," asked Nyskis of Paraltos, "Where exactly IS your nation?"

"I believe almost it is due southwest of here. But it be difficult to know truly, for great jungle confuse direction." replied Paraltos in his thick accent. He had not yet mastered the Persian tongue, but he understood it better than Nykis did Greek.

"And my people's capital of Persepolis lies almost due to the northwest of here." which would make this the center of the world.

"Interesting. But there must be other land beyond ours."

Nyskis gave a hearty laugh. "Then why haven't we seen it from the coasts. We would see anything that rises from the ocean, would we not?"

"Fog, maybe blocks sight of far lands."

"I suppose. But that's unlikely. I've seen plenty of clear days, but never seen lands other than this one."

"Ah, maybe right be you." said Paraltos.

The two men got up. With this conversation, they both knew that they had completed all of the possible knowledge exchange.

"We will again see you." said Paraltos with finality, picking up his pack. The other Greeks did the same. "But now, we must tell of you to our king Alexander.

"We shall do the same for Emperor Cyrus." Nyskis planted a small Persian flag, a dark dagger upon a turquoise background, into the earth.

"You should do the same." he advised to Paraltos, "To commemorate the meeting of our races.

"Yes." Paraltos plunged a Greek flag, sea green with a helmet embroidered into it right next to the Persian one.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/START2.png

"Farewell." he said. The Greek scouts ran off southwards into the trees. Within seconds, they were out of sight.

"Well, we might as well go to." said Nyskis. He sent off one of the faster scouts back to Persepolis, to report their discovery to Cyrus. The remaining Persians picked up their bags and set off westward.

Cyrus gazed out of his palace. The discovery of the Greeks was huge news, but not totally unexpected. There were so many tribes in the world that it would be ridiculous to believe that Persia was the only one who had ascended above barbarism. Although the local prophets, who ensured that mighty Ahura Mazda had created Persia to be the one bastion of power and knowledge, were having a bit of a problem of explaining this. At least, explaining it honestly.

Someone knocked on the door to Cyrus' palace.

"Enter!"

A messenger pushed the door open and bowed in respect. Cyrus bowed to his guest in greeting.

"So, what news do you bring?"

"A message from King Alexander of the Greeks. He wishes to travel to our city and meet you, the esteemed Emperor of Persia."

"Is he really? Interesting, I would not have thought that a man of power would risk his life in crossing the empty wilds of our lands. This Alexander must be a braver man than I suspected. Nonetheless, we must give him a greeting befitting of the power of Persia. Gather the forces and people of Persepolis! We will show Greece the great nation that is Persia!"

"Yes my Emperor." The messenger hurried out of Cyrus' room. Cyrus gazed out of his throne room and into the streets of Persepolis. Mighty as it already was, this would be nothing to the show the Greeks would receive.

Trumpets blared and drums boomed. A huge mass of Persians stood in the streets, to catch a glimpse of King Alexander of Greece.

Cyrus gazed down the street, towards the advancing Greek leader and his warrior party. Alexander was quite tall, with strong and solid features. He strode forward with an air of confidence and complete control. When he reached the first of the stairs, he stepped up the first two and stopped.

Cyrus pondered this for a moment. Alexander wouldn't humble himself to look up to Cyrus. He thought himself an equal. And from what Nyskis and his scouts had said, it was probably with good reason. Cyrus stepped down and met Alexander in the middle step. The crowd hushed. The two leaders stared at each other silently, daring the other to be the first to weaken and acknowledge the other. The hint of a grin crossed the Greek's face. Cyrus blinked. And suddenly, they were both laughing. Cyrus grabbed Alexander's hand and shook it heartily.

"Well met, Alexander of Greece. You must be stronger than I had heard, for never before has someone succeeded in staring me down."

"Hail to you too, Emperor Cyrus. But I fear that it was I who was stared down."

"We'll call it a tie." chuckled the Persian. "We and our people are equal. So make yourself at home. Welcome to Persepolis, the great city of Persia!"

Nyskis stepped to the top of the hill, the rest of his fellow scouts jogging up from behind him.

He stretched as tall as he could and gazed ahead.

"Do you see something there. Caxares?"

The second scout stepped up from behind him. He looked ahead for a very long time, eyes straining.

"I think I see something."

"More Jaguars?"

"No. I think they're... people."

Nyskis looked to where Caxares was pointing. There were indeed people. A group of them, moving closer. They appeared to be unarmed. The Persian scouts began to walk down the hill, following Nyskis.

When the two groups met, they paused and looked at each other for a few moments. These people wore simple clothes, with occasional dashes of a dark pink colour. Their skin was darker than a Persian's, and their eyes a deep brown.

Nyskis was the first to say something. Waving to himself, he began "I am Nyskis, of Persia."

A tall man from the group stepped up to Nyskis and looked at him critically for a few moments. Then gesturing to himself, he said "Liao Xiang. China."

Nyskis bowed. His fellow Persians followed the lead.

The Chinese did the same. Unintelligible chatter started among them. Nyskis listened. After a few moments, he tested his long worked skill with languages.

"Liao Xiang, show Nyskis China's leader?"

The man turned, surprised to hear the foreigner speak his language.

"The First Emperor? Qin Shi Huang?" asked Liao Xiang

"If he is your leader, yes."

"I can bring you to him. He is eager to meet those from new nations."

"Thank you, Liao Xiang."

The Chinese man ordered his people to continue their work, apparently building a farm. Caxares tapped Nyskis on the shoulder.

"How did you do that? You were just chatting with him like it was your first language. I've never seen that done by anyone other than Cyrus himself!"

"I don't really know. It's just a gift I suppose. But why are you so surprised? You saw me talk to the tribesmen near Persepolis years ago. And Paraltos with his Greeks after that."

"But they at least spoke something that sounded vaguely Persian!" argued Caxares.

"Look, it's a gift. I don't know and couldn't explain how I could do it, anymore than I could explain the colours in the earth here or in Persia."

"Okay." said Caxares. He continued to stare at Nyskis as the scout leader turned around to speak more with Liao Xiang.

Caxares was distracted from his thoughts by a shout from Nyskis.

"Alright, let's go! Prepare to see the wonders of Bejing!"

Nyskis and his scouts had been walking blindly for days. Liao Xiang had apologised profusely, but it was a law of the land that foreigners may not set eye upon the lands of China. The Persians were lucky to even be allowed into Chinese borders.

The scout leader quietly contemplated his time spent so far in China. While the language was more difficult than most, he had learned it well enough. But being blindfolded- Nyskis shuddered. He hated the feeling of total powerlessness and dependence on whoever guided him.

But his loyalty to Cyrus, and his task to map out the world came before his opinions.

"Nyskis." said Liao Xiang, "We are nearly in Bejing."

Nyskis straightened. He could hear loud but distant sounds ahead of him. The burbling of a river blended with them. The smell of foods in a market.

Suddenly, a hand grabbed at him. The blindfold was ripped off, and blinding light flooded everywhere. Nyskis blinked rapidly, and the blurs in his eyes coalesced into vision. He was walking down a street behind Liao Xiang and two warriors. Numerous Chinese people stared curiously at the Persians, then returned to their work.

"This way." said Liao Xiang.

A larger number of soldiers appeared from multiple directions, and joined the two soldiers ahead of Nyskis. He and his fellow Persians followed them to a bridge leading into a massive walled building.

Liao Xiang grinned proudly at the display of his nation's might. "Welcome to the Forbidden Palace."

"Forbidden? We're still allowed in, right?

You are permitted to enter the presence of the First Emperor, esteemed guests from the far corners of the world. I must stay here, as must your scouts.

Nyskis nodded.

"Okay. Thanks for your help in bringing me here.."

"I merely acted on the orders of the First Emperor. I hope you enjoy your visit. It is a rare time when a man meets him in person.

Nyskis crossed over the bridge with the guards. He was led through the building far too fast to admire the incredible sculptures on the walls, the paintings adorning the ceiling, or the tilework upon the floor. A door before him was opened and Nyskis was brought in.

Sitting on the throne was a most unique man. He looked like a man who had lived a luxurious life. His face wore a kindly smile, enough to put you off your guard. But his eyes showed a far different tale than his body. In the First Emperor's eyes was confidence, strength, and above all a crafty, calculating wisdom.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/QSH.png
"Hail, my Persian guest." his deep voice boomed, "I am Qin Shi Huang, First and Only Emperor of China. Who are you?

I am Nyskis, First Scout of Persia and representative of the Immortal Emperor Cyrus.

"Greetings, Nyskis of Persia. I am pleased to hear of yet another Immortal Emperor in this world. Do you come here with peaceful intent? Or with hidden dreams of conquest?"

"My only intentions are to explore and discover, First Emperor."

Qin Shi Huang gave Nyskis a piercing look. Nyskis could feel the man's eyes upon him, all of his wisdom searching his actions for a sign of dishonesty. Or a sign of weakness.

The First Emperor's gaze ceased. His expression took on a more kindly appearance.

"I believe that I can trust you. Send word to your Emperor Cyrus that Qin Shi Huang and the Chinese people send their best wishes and hope for a long and profitable relationship between our nations." The First Emperor nodded his head in a small bow. Nyskis bowed down to his knees.

And to you, I hope that the spirits of luck will continue to watch over you, and that your continued explorations will be fruitful. And you need not wear the blindfolds when leaving my nation.

A thousand thanks to you, your majesty.

Nyskis bowed again, and backed out of the room. The guards followed him out into the streets of Bejing.

Caxares was the first Persian to notice Nyskis' return.

"Nyskis! How was your meeting? What was he like?"

"A man who I have not seen the likes of since I last saw Cyrus, years ago. A good and wise king. I believe that we will have a friend in China."

Nyskis and his fellow scouts picked up their packs, and started off once again. To where, only time can tell.

"Empires grow, and empires flourish! For centuries, Persia has flourished! Now, it will grow!"

The crowd of Persians in Persepolis' Palace Square cheered.

"Our glorious city has grown to a size that is nearly unsustainable. But this does not mean the peak of the Persian race has been reached. This is merely the first step of our nation! For beyond our borders lie rich, uninhabited lands. They await our arrival and settlement!"

Cyrus paused. The crowd cheered again.

"So the time has come for us to bid goodbye to a great many Persians. For they will leave these gates behind them, and forge a new city out of the wilderness, a second Persepolis! And after a long time, they too will be a thriving center. And thus Persia shall expand further! Until all of the vast lands around us fly our flag!"

The great crowd cheered again. Cyrus nodded to a soldier. The man in turn waved to another. The great western gate of Persepolis slowly, majestically ground open. And the crowd began to pour out, following the standard-bearing warriors into the hills beyond.

Cyrus gazed as the great exodus disappeared into a golden sunset. A proud tear formed in his eye.

The Persian nation, which he had led since its infancy, was growing up.

Kraskes took another step through the thick forest. The rest of his warrior party followed shortly behind him.

“Sir,” began one.

“Yes?”

“Did you just hear something?”

“I heard you.”

“Well, it wasn’t me. Something’s out in the forest.”

“I heard it too sir.” piped up another warrior.

Kraskes listened intently. The river behind him burbled. The wind whistled through the trees. Something rustled in the woods.

“I hear it too.” he declared.

A roar echoed through the woods. Several men shuddered. A scream came from the back of the party.

Everyone spun around to see a soldier in the back being mauled by a massive, shaggy brown beast.

Kraskes’ military mind took control instantly.

“At arms!”

The Persian soldiers were shaken out of their shock. They quickly raised their massive clubs and charged at the beast.

The creature, hacking away at the remains of its first victim, looked up. It growled, swiped the corpse away, and charged into the crowd.

Two soldiers were quickly taken out by swift swipes from its terrible claws. Many more were injured, and no one could place a harmful blow on the beast.

A cry for help came from another direction. Kraskes spun and looked over. Another man was valiantly trying to hold off a second beast. But a mighty clap from two paws crushed his skull. His body was flung into a nearby tree, and the creature turned its attention to Kraskes.

Kraskes gritted his teeth and swung his club menacingly. The beast charged. Kraskes held firm. But with only a second left, he leapt to his left, and swung at the creature. Something contacted, and the next thing he new he was lying on the ground. His club was gone. Kraskes leapt up, and desperately searched around for his club. A quick glance showed that the beast was limping. Its eyes narrowed and it charged again.

Kraskes was unarmed. He saw only one other choice. He deftly leapt up onto a branch on the tree above him, and scrambled into it. The beast stopped beneath him, and to Kraskes’ horror, stood upright. It began batting at him, with one paw. The second was held close to its body, possibly injured.

Suddenly, Kraskes saw his club. It had been flung up into a nearby tree. He scrambled along branches, and the beast began to shake the tree. Kraskes reached for a branch that was suddenly shaken away, and fell to earth, getting just one bump at the tree holding his weapon.

The bear charged at him. Kraskes realized with horror that he was cornered by a small, dense section of trees. He looked up. His bump with the tree had loosened his club…

Ideas burst through Kraskes’ mind at an incredible rate. His plan was made in an instant.

He leapt up into the tree. The club shook loose. He grabbed it and dropped back down-

Onto the back of the bear. Kraskes dealt a mighty blow to the creature’s head. It roared and bucked, and the Persian was flung off. On the ground, he swung again at the beast. It roared again as he contacted its other good foreleg, and slumped to the ground. Kraskes moved in and dealt a mighty, killing blow to the creature’s head. It made a sad, dying sound and relaxed.

Kraskes backed away. Suddenly, the whole world was both very loud and very silent. No sound came from the rest of the forest, but the pounding of blood through his ears was deafening.

Kraskes made sure the creature was dead, then jogged back to the clearing where his force had first been ambushed. Many men lay dead, and many others wounded.

“Casualty report.” said Kraskes hoarsely to his second in command.

“We lost about twenty, twenty more may succumb to their wounds soon.”

Kraskes nodded.

“Have the uninjured bury the dead, and carry the wounded. We’re getting out of this forest. After that, we can take some time to heal and recover.”

“Yes sir.”

I do NOT spend too much time on Civ4! I barely spend any time, compared to NESing.

I'm very busy ATM folks, but my problems should be past after a week. More chapters after then. Hopefully.

I'm kinda short on time, and I prefer more, short updates.

My psycho schedule has gone somewhat back to normal, so updates may resume.

That guy is pretty dexterous. While being charged by a bear he ran up a tree, grabbed a club that somehow was there and then jumped onto the back of the bear while it was trying to maul him. Wow, he should enter the UFC. Are they gonna get some men together and take on the bear clan next? It's better than setting traps which would be cowardly. They should wear helmets to stop the pawclap skull crush maneuvre.
