View Full Version : Civ4 XML Files - Quick Reference
Max_x_fire Nov 13, 2005, 01:20 PM Recently I was dabbling with the game speeds, trying to create my own speed, and found that it was pretty difficult to find what I was looking for! After searching all the XML files, I finally found what I wanted, but I felt I had wasted too much time just trying to find what I wanted!
So I decided to start a quick reference to all the XML files, giving a little description about each one so as to speed up my searches. :goodjob:
As well as my personal reasons for doing it, I thought it might be handy for other modders out there, or those who want to start, as I've seen numerous posts asking, "where can I find this? As I want to mod that..."

Future plans: I'm going to play Civ4! :crazyeye:
After that, I'm going to take an in depth look into some of those big interesting looking XML files and catalogue them for future reference, possibly starting with the throne room files!!
Any comments, suggestions or additions for this project are welcome.
sovarn Nov 13, 2005, 02:15 PM wow excellent work dude :D
EDIT: ADDED PDF DOWNLOAD

Granias Nov 14, 2005, 03:48 AM Thanks, gonna upload v0.2 in a minute, I gotta go to sleep, working tomorrow!
Nice work there! You can easily see which files are located where and what they do.
Feet Nov 14, 2005, 03:53 AM Dude you should add this info to the Civ4 Wiki page!

WaxonWaxov Nov 14, 2005, 10:24 AM So is Version 0.2 the completed thing?
I noticed you're in Glasgow. My "to do" project is make a Scotland Mod. I've already got the St. Andrew's Cross flag to work.
Jay I.R.i.R. Nov 14, 2005, 12:03 PM I was hoping somebody would do this...
Max_x_fire Nov 14, 2005, 12:51 PM No v0.2 is not the full thing, sorry should have mentioned that last night but was too tired!
Its half done, with more on the way tonight, should have it finnished by tomorrow night (I hope!) :)
Max_x_fire Nov 14, 2005, 04:50 PM v0.3 is up, also added some more info to the top post including folders completed and future plans.
Nearly there! :goodjob:
Max_x_fire Nov 15, 2005, 06:01 AM Dude you should add this info to the Civ4 Wiki page!

I'll upload it to the wiki when it becomes v1.0 (no point uploading a partially complete list!)
I'll probably delve into some of the obscure XML files I found whilst making this and add them to the wiki, aswell as posting them on civfanatics. :)
sir_woland Nov 16, 2005, 11:34 AM The CityLSystem and PlotLSystem files in Buildings/ are most certainly related to the Lindenmayer systems which are used to generate terrain features and city views in a changing yet orderly fashion.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-system for some explanation on the subject.
Max_x_fire Nov 17, 2005, 02:00 AM Just thought I'd apologize about the lack of progress in this quick ref but this has been due to several RL things that where outwith my control! ;)
I'll have it finnished by tonight (GMT evening that is!) and I'll look into the CityLsystem and PlotLsystem files and get them updated (thanks sir_woland).
I may also need to update this after the comming patch, depending on how much Firaxis changed in the XML.
Max_x_fire Nov 17, 2005, 02:41 PM V1.0 is complete and uploaded!
Gonna give doing anymore reference work until the patch comes out as I've got a hunch it it may change things quite a bit!
Hope this is still helpful to someone!
Comments/suggestions anyone?

I tried to upload the file to the wiki but it seems to only accept pictures.
I looked at putting this stuff into the Wiki but I'm not sure exactly how to fit this info into what is there. If you could send me a PM or email me with a quick howto and format for it all then I'll start ripping it up and putting it into the Wiki. :)
vbraun Nov 28, 2005, 03:14 PM Here is a little guide I through together that should get you started: http://civ4wiki.com/wiki/index.php/Help:Adding_an_XML_Page
dlordmagic Dec 07, 2005, 10:25 PM Are there any plans to do something similar with the Python scripts. I get so dizzy going through each script looking for definitions to change to make my mod 100% compatible with all map types.
austin316hockey Dec 10, 2005, 07:00 AM Thanks for releasing this, very helpful.
SoCalian Dec 10, 2005, 11:56 AM umm, how do I open this thing. I unziped it, but I can't use it. Am I missing a program or something?

slothman Dec 22, 2005, 01:38 PM Dude you should add this info to the Civ4 Wiki page!
http://www.kyteland.com/civ4wiki/index.php/Main_Page
I just added 3 dozen mods or so.
Every time I see a good mod I keep the link to the thread.
I couldn't figure out how to create a page break so I just "entered" twice to make a space.
I don't know if that is what you want so remove them if you want.
This seems to be a better link:

john0452 Dec 22, 2005, 02:10 PM All I can say is :thanx: Max_x_fire, great reference and :goodjob:
ruff_hi Feb 07, 2006, 12:19 PM I thought of this but decided to create a spreadsheet that searches the XML / python files for key words. Put in the word, hit the macro button and get a list of the files with that word in it.
Aeon221 Mar 30, 2006, 06:23 AM BUMP! This is god diggity damn USEFUL! Out of the GRAVE with you!
cubsaver Sep 16, 2006, 12:57 PM I know this is probably the wrong thread...but I am preparing a birthday Gift for my wife - she's crazy about Civ 4 - and all I want to do is change the Name of an existing Leader (Elizabeth) and Civ Name (England) and add a special flag (one that represent my Wife's own Fantasy Civ.) and the Civ Icon - how do I do that - I have figured out the other stuff - changing city names, adding a unit to England etc. But getting my wife's Civ Name and Leader Name in there permanently (without using the existing features for that) - I guess it would be a very simple Mod - seems to escape my capacity - can someone tell me what XML files/Text Files I need to fiddle with, approximately what I need to do in them and how I get that button and flag fixed? I have been fiddling all afternoon/evening and I don't seem to get it.
Question #2: How can I create a button/icon for the Civ "Flash" Page in Civilopedia and actually get it IN-SIDE the Game?
Thanks in advance!
