View Full Version : Britain and Irland Map (100x100)
Vadus Nov 13, 2005, 04:06 PM Hi all,
This is the map version of my Britannia Scenario.
There are no player-infos, so this map will be started by default settings (3 or 4 Civilizations and the 1. player has always the netherlands as start-position ).
I don't know what to do that this map can be played with 18 (all) civilizations and random start-positions.
but this map can also be used to create some Scenarios like "Operation Seelöwe" (which I would like to see ;) ) or William the Conqueror
Mini-Map (of an older version, the "strangford loch" and "Scilly Islands" were added)

11-22-05 : added a new Version with the 'world size=WORLDSIZE_HUGE' setting.
Now the map starts with 11 Civs and you have lower upkeep.
Saltylicious Nov 15, 2005, 08:46 PM Neat, I'll try it out.
Door Nov 16, 2005, 05:29 PM Very nice, I'll try it out later. It looks pretty accurate too. There's a line the map file that can be changed to set the default number of players. If you look for "world size" and set it equal to WORLDSIZE_HUGE then the map will default to 11 players (this changes some other settings like maintenance to be as with a huge map, but this map is fairly large anyway). In order to get 18 players I think you have to put in civilization info for each of the 18 teams. You can leave start locations out for the teams though and just specify in each plot with "StartingPlot" to get randomly assigned starting locations. The BMPtoWBS converter has the ability to write the coordinates in the .py file before converting. I've also made a modified version (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=135740) of the BMPtoWBS converter that can take in random StartingPlots from a BMP image if that's any help.
Also, how did you take your screenshot of the whole map like that? Is it just the minimap, or is there a way to zoom out that far?

Ok, I changed the world size setting to HUGE.
The screenshot is from the replay, which will appear immediately when you start a new map without having placed units and cities, because aof losing the game.
4_HoTA Nov 25, 2005, 04:24 AM As you know im improving the map face vadus, this is a great map too work with guys, hopefully this will turn into a great mod, vilus tech mod may help here too vadus http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=140264 i can see england with a long medieval tech build too the next era with the benifit being that era units get used more.
StarWorms Dec 18, 2005, 08:16 AM Well I like the map but I keep getting loads of barbarians attacking my city constantly. I'm not sure if that's to do with any map settings but it's hard to expand when I have to build more and more archers/warriors to defend my city. I hope they stop.
Skyrim Dec 19, 2005, 12:55 PM i am so glad someone included the channel islands in a map (although only as a one square for Guernesy and Jersey) people who are reading this could someone please make a really big Uk map and include the channel islands (i might try but my laptop cant run big maps and i cant make them anyway:( ) that includes Guernsey,Jersey, sark(me!),herm and maby alderney but oh well if u cant lol. cheers
CoolioVonHoolio Jan 16, 2006, 01:26 PM use this map and make an irish revolution scenario.
VinceV Sep 30, 2006, 08:24 PM This is a beautiful map, very well done. However, it is a little large for my computer to run. I don't know if this takes long or not, but is it easy to trim it to about 80 X 80 or something, ideally cutting off some of the bottom and the right? I was thinking that 2 empires could be in Ireland, two in England, one in Wales, one in Scotland, and just two on the mainland. Is this possible? I thought I have seen other people requesting authors to resize their maps, so I just wondered. I'm pretty novice at modding and was not able to accomplish this myself.
Thanks,
Vince
DrewTate Oct 09, 2006, 10:07 PM yeah that would be sweet if u can get it down to 80X80 im on a lap top too over here.
other than map size, this map is awesome.
DrewTate Oct 10, 2006, 05:18 PM i played this map and it is waaaaay too big

You don't need anything, BtS loads Vanilla and Warlords maps just fine.
Formulapower Jul 29, 2008, 08:33 PM Yea thanks...I figured that out a little after this post....it was just trying to open it with reg civ 4...onc I opened it with BTS it did fine
thanks
Ama Aug 02, 2008, 06:48 AM Thank you for the map. Is there a way to make it so it doesn't always start off in the Netherlands?
pirus Mar 25, 2009, 04:29 AM Just thought I'd post and show my appreciation for this map.
Playing it on Noble with a friend of mine over the net, with 7 other civs (9 in all). I've started in Northern England and there are 2 other civs on England below me, 4 in France, 1 on Ireland all on their own (lucky Hannibal) and 1 in the Netherlands too. Had a few Out Of Sync problems but nothing too strenuous.
Although, think I expanded my civ too quickly but making up for it now (~1000 AD) :mischief:
It's great to see a large map of the British Isles where you can place a great number of cities rather than just the normal 2 on most Earth maps or 3-4 on most Europe maps.
Thanks Vadus :goodjob:
xmen510 Mar 25, 2009, 10:00 AM Thread Necromancy, but yes, it is a good map!
pirus Mar 25, 2009, 10:27 AM LOL Sorry - just wanted to show my appreciation :)
owenbevt Mar 27, 2009, 05:59 PM thanks for doing so thouough prius otherwise i might not have notest this grate map
much love from a welshman, persionaly i think only bits of wales shoulb be mountin and more it it hill, but mybe thats becose i like playing as Celts
owenbevt Apr 01, 2009, 11:47 AM Hear is my small edit of the wonderful Brittan + Ireland map with a IMO more realistic and slightly more playable mid Wales (where I live). I hope these don’t come across as just “my home should be the best”, for almost everything I’ve added I’ve tried to take something away.
Dose anyone know how to make BTS saves openable in a mod? Percificly Rise of Mankind or Tommes’s War so that the Welsh, Scottish and Irish Civs can be used on this map? (making a Fall form Heaver of even Fall Further version of the map to reflect anglo-celtic mythology would be cool to)
Changes:
1: more east-west valleys (it is often more practical to travel along a Easterly valley into England and then re-enter Wales in the right valley rather than attempt N-S travel within Wales over all the hilltops)
2: slightly less mountainous overall (Wails isn’t as mountainous as Scotland and there not really that much that would completely block armies movement)
3: changed gems to gold on the West Cost, (Welsh gold was one of the motivations for the Roman invasion)
4: one of the S.Wales stones has bean moved to mid Wales (high quality slate)
5: added coal in S.Wales (coal mining dominated its economy for the industrial eara)
6: replaced iron with copper (the bronze age is believed to have started somewhere near there- at least for Britan)
7: added Iron to W.Midlands (birthplace of industry)
8: Anglesey separated by a river (acutely by a sea channel but a very narrow one), and has copper
9: added a short rather Ystwyth (one reason for the location of Aberystwyth), and altered the river Sevan slightly (the “natural moat” at Shrewsury)
Terrance888 Apr 19, 2009, 11:10 AM Don't forget to add the Celts.
